Watch a Super-Young Keanu Reeves Report on a Canadian Teddy Bear Convention | NickRewind

Watch a Super-Young Keanu Reeves Report on a Canadian Teddy Bear Convention

To celebrate National Teddy Bear day on Thursday, the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) shared a hilarious old video of actor Keanu Reeves reporting on the first-ever Canadian International Teddy Bear Convention.

The short clip was originally a part of the children's news magazine series Going Great, which Reeves was a correspondent and co-host on for its third season. In a follow-up tweet, the CBC wrote that this segment aired around 1984, making the young actor about 20 years old in the video.

At the beginning of the clip, Reeves says in voiceover that he expected "a lot of craziness," covering the convention. The camera then cuts to shots of him asking hard-hitting, journalistic questions such as, "Why are all the bears' first name Teddy?" (This isn't in the clip, but it's because of President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt!)

Reeves also asks a woman where her bear went to college, and she replies, "Paws Preparatory School," before showing off the bear's "Paws Prep" t-shirt. He also asks someone what their friends' reaction is to them collecting the Teddy bears, but the clip cuts away before hearing the response.

Despite being there as "A Very Serious Journalist," Reeves did seem to have fun at the convention. At one point, someone hands him a bear, and he acts like it's attacking him. He also gets stylish at one point, donning a set of sunglasses while he's speaking to a stuffed bear.

"I've been looking all over for you. We gotta go down to the bears-only cafe and talk 'bears-ness.' Listen, you know that bears necessity contest? We've got problems. So listen, we'll go down. We'll talk business, and hey, everything will be okay. I love this guy," he says to the Teddy before giving it a kiss.

The end of the clip has Reeves joking, "As Graham Abbey says, 'If the bear fits...,'" before the footage cuts to a child saying, "Wear it." (The kid's wearing a hat decorated with a teddy bear on top, FYI.)

Going Great, which also aired on Nickelodeon in the U.S., was some of the earliest work Reeves had in the entertainment industry, over a decade before the Bill and Ted Face The Music star would astonish audiences in Speed and The Matrix trilogy.

The CBC show often focused on children with out-of-the-ordinary skills that would impress young viewers. A few other clips of Reeves on Going Great have also resurfaced on YouTube, including ones that focus on a teenage juggler and a young equestrian teacher. The horseback riding episode is particularly amusing, as it shows Reeves learning how to mount and ride a horse, a skill that later came in handy when Reeves had to shoot 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.

Reeves' publicist did not respond to Newsweek's emailed request for comment in time for publication.

Moore's Deli Closed: Popular Burbank Cartoonist Haunt Leaves Legacy

At this Burbank deli, they came for the pastrami but stayed for the cartoons

Go past the front counter, the beer taps and the chalkboard menu. Then step inside the back room.

That’s where you’d find the Animator’s Room at Moore’s Delicatessen, where each white wall was covered in cartoons by well-known and respected animators, illustrators, storyboarders and artists. For nearly a decade, members of Hollywood’s animation community — from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. and more — flocked to the beloved Burbank eatery to leave their mark on the walls.

“I noticed that they were always doodling on the napkins,” Robert Moore, the deli’s owner, recently told The Los Angeles Times. “So I asked them — I bought them some Sharpies, and I said, ‘You guys draw on the wall, and then sign it and date it.’ And so that’s how it started.”

Before the deli shuttered on Aug. 31, yet another California small business to go under during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, its walls featured big names such as Stephen Hillenburg, the late creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, who drew the character Patrick Star with a Krabby Patty on his mind.

A two-minute walk away from Cartoon Network Studios, Moore’s Deli was just about to turn 10 before it closed due to lack of business. “It’s horrible to close down a dream that you had for 10 years,” Moore said. “But I think it’s just a sign of the times — to move on and start something new.”

After Moore was forced to close the deli — he was throwing away menus as he spoke to The Times last week — he wasn’t sure what to do with the art on his walls. He thought about cutting out individual pieces and holding an auction, but his landlord certainly wouldn’t be on board.

“It’s like a Banksy situation,” said storyboard artist Kent Osborne, referring to the British street artist’s installations, which are sometimes sold by removing the wall they were painted on.

Osborne and Moore go way back. In 2010, when Osborne was working on Adventure Time, the popular Cartoon Network series, he and his colleagues were looking for a place to watch the show’s premiere. A local pub fell through and Moore suggested a watch party at the deli.

“It was his idea, and I was kind of like the liaison. I told everybody,” Osborne said. “It was his idea to have everybody draw on the walls. He said, ‘I have a big thing of markers, and everyone’s going to draw on the walls.’ It just seemed really crazy, because it was these nice, pristine white walls.”

They wouldn’t be blank for long.

Robert Ryan Cory, a former character designer on SpongeBob SquarePants, stepped up and inked the first drawing: SpongeBob holding a spatula. Cory, who had recently switched jobs to Cartoon Network, also included a joking caption: “Nickelodeon sucks,” he wrote.

Kung Fu Panda's Po, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Phineas and Ferb's Ferb, among others, grace the walls.

The line was in jest, but when Cartoon Network executives saw it, they wanted it painted over. “You gotta get that taken care of,” they told Moore. He did: Now SpongeBob grips his spatula sans caption.

That spirit of friendly rivalry was a common currency throughout the Burbank animation community. Osborne, for instance, has worked at Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. The deli was where he went to bump into friends at other studios.

Sean Szeles, a writer on Cartoon Network’s Regular Show, sketched the show’s blue jay Mordecai character. The creator of Cartoon Network’s The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Thurop Van Orman, who also voiced the title character, immortalized Flapjack, a one-toothed boy.

A T. rex and pterodactyl duo drawn on the wall drool over the deli's signature City Hall pastrami sandwich.

From the creators of the Kung Fu Panda movie came a T. rex and a pterodactyl drooling over one of the deli’s signature City Hall sandwiches.

“Pen Ward [of Adventure Time] drew Lumpy Space Princess, and suddenly it was like, ‘Oh, wow, this is a really cool gallery,’” Osborne said. “It was fun to go in over the years and see new additions.”

Every regular seemed to treasure his or her own piece of deli lore. For Osborne, that meant giving the restaurant a cameo in his 2015 film Uncle Kent 2, which premiered at the South by Southwest festival. (Moore let the crew film a scene in the front room.)

“The absolute best thing about this place is that in the men’s room, above the urinal is a photograph of a waterfall,” Osborne joked of the deli in one of the two Yelp reviews he’s ever written.

“Thanks a lot,” his friend Moore told him.

For Ian Jones-Quartey, creator of the animated series OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, his own deli legend was an inside joke about Cartoon Network’s show Mad. At one point during a watch party, Moore’s clientele “booed” the show. A couple of months later, Mad clapped back in an episode called “Avenger Time.”

“I see the crews of other cartoons sitting in a deli complaining about Mad, like a bunch of sissies,” says a character called the Watcher, looking into the future.

Not all of the restaurant’s appeal was reserved for animators, though. Fans would come to watch parties too — and add to the walls on occasion. And anyone, of course, could come to see the art.

“A lot of times, walls like that will be in a studio, so they’ll be a little restrained,” Jones-Quartey said. “Or you won’t get to see different people’s characters all together, and I think that’s what was special about it.”

For Jorge R. Gutierrez, creator of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, seeing drawings from folks across the animation community felt like “visiting old friends.” He’ll never forget the moment his 2-year-old son, Luka, pulled down his dad’s pants as he etched the superhero El Tigre character onto the deli’s wall.

“SpongeBob SquarePants’” pet snail Gary, Disney’s Minnie Mouse and “Avatar: The Last Airbender’s” Momo and Aang at Moore’s Deli.(Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times)

“I feel like it was like our version of when you go into a small diner … and they have the celebrity pictures on the wall of the people who came in,” Jones-Quartey said.

But business fell by 80% when the pandemic took hold, Moore said, and his landlord still wanted full rent. Although the landlord offered to defer payments, the restaurant’s lease was up a couple of months ago. It’s been “a mountain of debt,” Moore said.

And yet he felt blessed to be there.

Before the deli, Moore oversaw the food at Dodger Stadium, where concessions are run by the Levy restaurant and hospitality company.

“I was so miserable working for the corporate machine of Levy restaurants; I had to do something of my own,” he said.

When his deli opened in October 2010, Moore was following his dream — and in his grandparents’ footsteps. They had opened their own delicatessen on San Francisco’s Union Street in 1946.

The deli’s run was “all fun,” Moore said, and he has no regrets. But, of course, he was sad to see it come to an end.

“That’s all folks,” he wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page to announce its closure. “Thank you for 10 wonderful years.”

“I thought, what’s the best way to do it?” Moore said. “And I thought about Porky Pig. He said, ‘That’s all, folks.’ I think that was very appropriate to bid adieu to everybody in Burbank.”

ViacomCBS Considering Rebranding CBS All Access as Paramount+

ViacomCBS, which owns Paramount film studios, CBS and Nickelodeon, is planning to rebrand CBS All Access next year.

According to a report in the Financial Times, one of the leading candidates for the rebranded name is Paramount+ to better compete with Disney+, Netflix and HBO Max.

Since the merger of Viacom and CBS last year, streaming has become a key part of the company’s growth. In fact, the merger was seen as an essential tactic to challenge rivals.

Part of redefining the company is renaming it. In a short-list of possible names, sources tell FT, Paramount+ is the popular choice. It is rumored ViacomCBS has also considered using the Viacom or Pluto TV brands as part of the relaunched service.

ViacomCBS currently uses the Paramount+ brand for its international OTT app, which is available in Latin America, the Nordics, Eastern Europe, Russia and Latin America. Like CBS All Access, Paramount+ also features content from Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.

CBS All Access has tapped Droga5 New York to rebrand the platform.

A ViacomCBS spokesperson said: “We are currently going through a thoughtful branding process that will reflect the expansion and relaunch of the service. Both existing and new original brands are under consideration.”

According to the FT, part of the motivation for rebranding CBS All Access is that ViacomCBS management “believes the CBS brand appeals mainly to an older audience.” ViacomCBS is the home of several other popular brands including MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and Smithsonian. However, most of those have targeted audiences, with Paramount possibly seen as the one brand in the portfolio with the broadest appeal.

Paramount Pictures is the second oldest movie studio in the US, so its name (and famous mountain logo) carry a lot of recognition for consumers of all ages. In May the first post-merger expansion of CBS All Access was the addition of dozens of Paramount films, with over 150 now available. More are expected to be added by the time of the relaunch.

We have already seen Viacom utilize the Paramount name for re-branding. In 2018 their Spike TV cable network was relaunched as the Paramount Network, pivoting to take on premium free cable networks like AMC. Its first original drama Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner, has solid ratings and is wrapping up its third season.

ViacomCBS’ relaunch of CBS All Access is already underway. Earlier this month, the company added 70 shows with more than 3,500 episodes to the streaming platform, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Henry Danger, The Loud House, The Thundermans, ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks, Game Shakers, Rugrats, CatDog, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Big Time Rush and The Fairly OddParents from Nickelodeon, as well as BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood, MTV’s Laguna Beach, and Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show. More shows are expected to rollout over the next six months. ViacomCBS recently announced that Nickelodeon's Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will join the service during early 2021.

ViacomCBS has also revealed that, with CBS All Access expanding its slate, Nickelodeon will be keeping Noggin, its preschool application, operational because of its unique interactive functionality and access to games. The video content on Noggin, which includes popular Nickelodeon kids programming such as Dora the Explorer and Paw Patrol, will eventually move to the rebranded All Access.

With the relaunch of CBS All Access, ViacomCBS is also thought to be planning to launch a separate streaming service for CBS.

The company reported 16 million streaming subscribers across Showtime and CBS All Access in August.

From Digital TV Europe:

ViacomCBS raises SVOD target as it ramps up streaming drive

ViacomCBS is on track to reach an increased goal of 18 million paying SVOD customers by the end of the year as it cranks up its streaming efforts and prepares for the relaunch of a domestic streaming offering combining CBS All Access and content from Paramount early next year, according to CEO Bob Bakish.

Speaking at a Bank of America conference, Bakish said that the addition of 190 Paramount movies to CBS All Access in July was “in effect is a preview launch of where we’re going” with the service.

Bakish said that double-digit growth in usage of the service in August had been driven by “brands that were not on the service before”

Bakish said that ViacomCBS would expand its streaming originals slate to encompass all of the company’s brands, citing the example of Paramount’s forthcoming feature for Nickelodeon, Sponge on the Run, which will be launched on th streamer rather than theatrically, and SpongeBob spin-off series, Kamp Koral – the first Nickelodeon original for the service.

“The end result will be a compelling differentiated ViacomCBS streaming super service, which offers consumers a broad and differentiated product at a compelling price point. It’s going to have wide demographic appeal across kids, young adults, millennials and older adults and it’s going to have a very robust offering of entertainment, plus sports and news,” he said.

Bakish said that ViacomCBS was “building a linked ecosystem of free and pay streaming offerings, including our super service, Showtime OTT and Pluto TV each of which will be available individually”.

He said the key goal was “ubiquitous distribution” rather than bundling all services together and using a vertically integrated platform.

Bakish also said that the company would look to boost its sports offering as part of the streaming service, and cited its acquisition of the US rights to UEFA Champions League football.

Bakish said that ViacomCBS had now renewed its CBS All Access distribution deal with Amazon Prime Video.

Ithaca College Junior Pens New 'Victorious' Fan Fiction '7 Years Later'

A junior at Ithaca College, a liberal arts college in Ithaca, New York and fan fiction author who goes by the pen name Kashikoi-kun recently penned a new fan fiction inspired by Nickelodeon's hit comedy series Victorious and the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Titled 7 Years Later, the fan-fic reimagines characters from Victorious as Ithaca College graduates who reunite after Cat Valentine’s (Ariana Grande) grandmother dies of COVID-19. Kashikoi-kun wrote the fan fiction after losing one of his own relatives to COVID-19.

"7 years after high school, Cat's grandma dies from COVID-19. The funeral reunites a washed-up Tori with her successful, ex-friends." reads the synopsis.

“It kind of helps me move on or grieve in a creative way and help others hopefully with the same process,” Kashikoi-kun told The Ithacan.

Kashikoi-kun said that he’s noticed an increase in fan fictions being read and written on the internet since the pandemic began. He said 7 Years Later receives approximately 100 views a day, and his other fan fictions have also spiked in readership.

“I feel like creative people are just spending more time writing and creating other forms of art, whether it be fan fictions or scripts,” Kashikoi-kun said. “People just don’t have much to do, and, when you have more views, for some writers that motivates them to write more.”

Kashikoi-kun's Victorious fan-fiction is available to read at https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13664159/1/7-Years-Later.

Nickelodeon's Victorious revolves around aspiring singer Tori Vega (Victoria Justice), a teenager who attends a performing arts high school called Hollywood Arts High School, after taking her older sister Trina's (Daniella Monet) place in a showcase, while getting into screwball situations on a daily basis. On her first day at Hollywood Arts, she meets Andre Harris (Leon Thomas III), Robbie Shapiro (Matt Bennett), Rex Powers (Robbie's puppet), Jade West (Elizabeth Gillies), Cat Valentine (Ariana Grande), and Beck Oliver (Avan Jogia). The series aired for 57 episodes over four seasons between 2010 and 2013, and led to the spin-off Sam & Cat, with Jennette McCurdy's character, Sam Puckett from iCarly.

The cast of Victorious recently reunited virtually to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary.
