Avatar: The Last Airbender: Albert Kim Teases Lots of 'Big Scenes' and 'New Characters as Netflix's Live-Action Adaptation Enters Week 3 of Production

Albert Kim teases big scenes and new characters as Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series enters week three of production


A little less than two weeks after Netflix and Albert Kim's (Sleepy Hollow, Nikita) live-action take on Nickelodeon's beloved animated Avatar: The Last Airbender made some major casting news and announced that production was underway, Kim is checking back in from the set and it looks like things are rolling along. The series is filming in a new, custom-built facility in Vancouver. Designed and operated by Pixomondo Virtual Production, the state-of-the-art stage is one of the biggest virtual production volumes in North America, with 23,000 sq ft of stage space and more than 3,000 LED Panels. Using some of the same cutting-edge technology used for Netflix's The Midnight Sky and Disney's The Mandalorian, the virtual stage allows for visual effects to be done in real-time in-camera, combining multiple environments for a new standard for immersive storytelling. "We're thrilled to start production on this incredible project and we're especially excited to work with the technology-benders at PXO to create the wondrous world of ATLA using the most advanced techniques available to filmmakers anywhere in the world," Kim explained.

Now, we're getting a look at Kim's director's chair along with a caption confirming that the third week of filming was underway and that there were "lots of big scenes" and "new characters" on the way. Here's a look at Kim's behind-the-scenes Tweet from the set:


Starring in Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is: Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Lim Kay Siu as Gyatso, and Ken Leung as Commander Zhao.


With Kim serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer of the series, Rideback's Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Aladdin) and Lindsey Liberatore (Walker), as well as Michael Goi (Swamp Thing, American Horror Story), will also executive produce. Goi, Roseanne Liang, Jet Wilkinson, and Jabbar Raisani have been tapped to direct.

Gordon Cormier Shaves His Head to Play Aang in Netflix's Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series

As the start of production for Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender nears, Aang actor Gordon Cormier has begun preparing by shaving his head.


Gordon Cormier, the star of Netflix's upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, finally sports Aang's shaved head look in some new images. For years now, Netflix has been trying to bring Avatar to life in a way that will prove more successful than M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 misfire The Last Airbender. The original animated series, which aired on Nickelodeon for three seasons, tells the story of young airbender Aang, the famed Avatar who stands as his war-torn world's last hope for peace. Aang has the power to wield all the elements, and he'll need each one to defeat the power-hungry Fire Lord.

Netflix's Avatar suffered a huge blow last year when creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino departed the series over creative differences. Since then, though, the project has made considerable progress under the care of showrunner Albert Kim. Filming on Avatar: The Last Airbender is expected to pick up in the coming weeks, potentially leading to a late 2022 premiere. As Cormier's newfound online popularity indicates, most major roles for Avatar season 1 have been cast, with characters like Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Commander Zhao (Ken Leung) being added most recently.

Another sign that Avatar: The Last Airbender is finally about to begin production has arrived courtesy of Cormier himself. Last week, Cormier hinted he was just about to shave his head in preparation for the start of filming, and now it's clear he's officially taken the plunge. Cormier's most recent social media post shows him (wearing a Netflix hoodie) with Sokka actor Ian Ousley, and though Cormier is wearing a hat in both of the images he shared, fans can get a peek at his shaved appearance at the side of his head. Some kids might balk at the idea of shaving their head, but Cormier was up for the challenge. Back in August, Cormier confirmed he would be shaving his head to play Aang, and he seemed very excited at the prospect. Fans might have to wait a bit longer to see his full Aang look, blue tattoos included. Still, this is a thrilling bit of progress that helps to make Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender feel even more like a reality. There might still be some apprehension from fans over this project, but based on the cast alone, there's reason for excitement.

One of the reasons Shyamalan's The Last Airbender struggled to win over fans was its lack of humor, which is a key part of the original series. Aang in particular is supposed to maintain his youthful excitement throughout the first season, but the movie effectively smothered that. Based on his social media posts, it looks like Cormier has the right kind of bright-eyed enthusiasm needed to play Aang, and hopefully he'll be able to retain that on Avatar. Cast Announced For Dingbat Theatre Project's 'The SpongeBob Musical'

The musical is based on the hit Nickelodeon television series, which premiered in 1999.


Sarasota, FL - After producing Shrek the Musical and Hedwig and the Angry Inch over the summer, Dingbat Theatre Project will be tackling another full-scale musical: the area premiere of The SpongeBob Musical.

The world-famous sea sponge and his exotic array of aquatic compatriots will hit the stage indoors at The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime this December. The musical is based on the beloved Nickelodeon television series, which premiered in 1999. The musical, which played on Broadway in 2017, earned twelve Tony nominations including Best Musical. The show was conceived by Tina Landau, with a book by Kyle Jarrow, and original music by a variety of popular musicians including Aerosmith, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, and others.

Dingbat's production features a multi-talented cast of twelve playing multiple roles similar to their production of Shrek the Musical in May 2021. The cast is filled out with a four-piece band who fill out roles in the ensemble. The production is lead by the directing team of Brian F. Finnerty, who also choreographs, and Luke Manual McFatrich. They are both collaborating on costume, scenic, and prop design. The show is music directed by Michelle Kasanofsky and stage managed by Gretchen Beaumier.


The citizens of "Bikini Bottom" are led by Jamie Molina in the role of SpongeBob SquarePants, Luke Manual McFatrich as Patrick Star, and Noelia Altamirano as Sandy Cheeks. All appeared in the company's production of Shrek, and McFatrich portrayed Hedwig in Dingbat's production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Molina has also appeared locally at Florida Studio Theatre and The Players Centre, while Altamirano has been seen in many other local productions.

The professional company is rounded out with other Dingbat returns like Amanda Heisey as Squidward Q. Tentacles, Brian F. Finnerty as Mr. Eugene Krabs, Javisha Strong as Ms. Mayor and Gary, and Cory Woomert as Perch Perkins and Patchy the Pirate. All appeared in Shrek, Heisey appeared in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Finnerty acts as Co-Artistic Director for the company.

New faces to the Dingbat stage include Christina Capehart as Karen the Computer, Hunter Day as Sheldon J. Plankton, Austin Howeth as Mrs. Puff, Andrew Smiley as Larry the Lobster, and Kiley Berkery as Pearl Krabs. Capehart has made a name for herself through her many performances at Manatee Performing Arts Center and in the Tampa Bay Area, most recently portraying Fastrada in Pippin at MPAC. Day and Smiley have been seen on local stages in The Players Centre's productions of Head Over Heels and [title of show] respectively. Berkery is a high school student, who was recently seen in John & Jen at Venice Theatre.

The SpongeBob Musical will play indoors at The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime (821 Apricot Ave, Sarasota, FL 34237) December 2-19, 2021. The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! was broadcast in December 2019 across Nickelodeon platforms and featured much of the original Broadway company reprising their performances, including Tony nominee Ethan Slater as the high-energy title sponge, Tony nominee Gavin Lee as Squidward Q. Tentacles, Danny Skinner as Patrick Star, Brian Ray Norris as Eugene Krabs, and Wesley Taylor as Sheldon Plankton. The TV event is available to stream on Paramount+ and is available on DVD.

‘SpongeBob the Musical’ brings favorite cartoon characters to Sarasota stage

For more than 20 years, “SpongeBob SquarePants” and his animated friends and neighbors in Bikini Bottom have been entertaining audiences young and old with the way they deal with major and minor problems.

Fans followed them from the Nickelodeon TV series to feature films and on to Broadway where “SpongeBob the Musical” brought a major crisis to the characters’ underwater world. It had a nearly yearlong run in 2018.

Holidays on TV: Sarasota CEO crafts a Hallmark Christmas film from an ‘American Idol’ winner’s song

The Dingbat Theatre Project, which previously presented “Shrek: The Musical” (another show based on an animated hit) and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” returns to the Bazaar at Apricot and Lime with an intimate production of the show.

Co-director and company founder Luke McFatrich, who also plays Patrick, SpongeBob’s best friend, said audiences don’t have to know anything about the cartoon to appreciate the musical.

“The story is completely original and based on the characters. It stands on its own,” McFatrich said, likening it to “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” which was an original story based on the Peanuts.

The show was co-conceived by director Tina Landau with a book by Kyle Jarrow, and a song list by a range of pop stars from John Legend and Cyndi Lauper to Sara Bareilles, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, They Might be Giants, the Flaming Lips and David Bowie.

In the musical, an underwater volcano, Mount Humongous, is threatening to explode tomorrow, “and everybody is freaking out about how to solve the problem,” said Jamie Molina, who plays SpongeBob.

The problem divides the residents of Bikini Bottom. Plankton and Karen, owners of the Chum Bucket restaurant, encourage people to enter an escape pod, and they plan a benefit concert to raise money to build the pod. But SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy Cheeks want everyone to stay together to help save their home.

Playing a cultural icon

Molina, who recently moved to Colorado, was excited to come back to Sarasota to play SpongeBob because the cartoon was something she watched every morning before going to school.

But she was nervous about playing such an iconic character.

“Everyone knows this character even if they didn’t watch the show. They have preconceived notions,” she said. “I had to figure out why I connect with him. What do I personally have in common with him. It’s the energy and the positivity.”

McFatrich, who also grew up watching the cartoons, said SpongeBob “is the personification of childhood. Every emotion that SpongeBob feels is the most extreme. When he’s angry, he’s really angry, when he’s scared, he’s scared and he shows that on his sleeve.”

McFatrich is directing the production with Brian F. Finnerty, who also plays Mr. Eugene Krabs. They also are designing the costumes and Finnerty is providing the choreography. The cast also includes Noelia Altamirano as Sandy Cheeks, Amanda Heisey as Squidward Q. Tentacles, along with Cory Woomert, Hunter Day, Kiley Berkerey, Javisha Strong, Eldred Brown, Austin Howeth and Zoe Smith.

Many of the cast members also appeared in “Shrek.”

Dingbat Theatre is following the #SafeArtsSarasota safety protocols, requiring audience members to show a negative COVID-19 test (or a vaccine card) and everyone must wear a mask indoors.

Waltham students featured on Nickelodeon show

Some of Waltham's most curious young students were highlighted on Nickelodeon on Nov. 17, as cameras from the children's cable network followed a field trip of Waltham Public School students through the Boston Dynamics headquarters. 

The students were featured on the show Nick News, a weekly program on Nickelodeon  presenting features on different real-world topics and issues in a kid-friendly environment. The students were used as part of a feature on Boston Dynamics, and the robots they have designed, such as the human-like Atlas and the dog-like Spot, which have been part of viral videos in recent years due to their life-like behavior. 

Deena DePamphilis, who serves as the director of  science for middle and high school students in Waltham, said Nickelodeon reached out to the district looking for students that could be shown on the program. DePamphilis than worked with different robotics teachers to identify students  interested in participating. 

"Nickelodeon reached out to us about pulling together a group of students aged 8-14 to tour Boston Dynamics," DePamphilis said. "Our robotics and engineering teachers worked quickly to pull together a group, the only ask from Nickelodeon was that they be curious and ask a lot of questions, which wasn't a problem." 

Students were taken through Boston Dynamics on Oct. 28 and shown the different robots the company has designed, including Atlas, who had gone viral in the past for it's human like movements, including doing backflips and choreographed dances. Students were encouraged to ask questions to the engineers about how the robots work and what potential services they could be capable of.

Students also got a chance to interact with Spot, where students were allowed to "pilot" the dog-like android around the robot playground at the facility, which is mostly just various terrains and obstacles  the robot would potentially see out in the real world. The robot is manipulated  by a controller similar to most video game consoles,  making it familiar to students.

"Every single kid got to drive Spot, including trying to crash over different terrain and learn how to stand it back up," DePamphilis said. 

The team of engineers and robotics professionals also shared their background with the students, as well as the trials and prototypes  Boston Dynamics went through to end up with the sophisticated robots they have today.

"One teacher told me that the older models were very much used, dinged up and duct taped, and it was awesome for the kids to see that," DePamphilis said. "Students learned about the different work/interest backgrounds of the employees, one person for example used to build bicycles and does not have an engineering or robotics degree."
