Paramount Reportedly Shuts Down Production On New 'Garfield' Animated Series

Paramount has reportedly decided to cancel production on an untitled Garfield animated series.

Garfield

In a post on Facebook, veteran animator Bob Camp, who previously worked on The Ren & Stimpy Show and currently works as a Storyboard Supervisor on The Patrick Star Show, a spin-off from SpongeBob SquarePants, revealed in a Facebook post that he has heard that Paramount may have "shut down the Garfield series" at Nickelodeon following Paramount's merger with Skydance. However, Camp later followed up his comment admitting that he wasn't sure how accurate the information was.

There has been murmurings of a new Garfield animated series being in the works at Nickelodeon for some time. In 2019, when Paramount (then Viacom) acquired the Garfield franchise for Nickelodeon, Paramount revealed in a press release that Nickelodeon was planning to develop a new Garfield animated series. Then, in August 2025, Snipple Animation hinted that they were attached to the project.

Although the status of Nickelodeon's Garfield project is currently unknown, the Garfield franchise continues to thrive as a whole. In addition to the on-going Garfield comic strip, the Monday-hating feline continues to feature in consumer products, including video games and an upcoming Baby Garfield comic series from BOOM! Studios. There is also a sequel to 2024's The Garfield Movie in the works from Alcon Entertainment and Sony Pictures.

Paramount Reportedly Cancels 'Ren & Stimpy' Reboot

Could Ren & Stimpy be about to make a comeback?

Ren & Stimpy

Bringing back animated series to the modern era has been a hot ticket item recently, with series such as RugratsAnimaniacsTiny Toon AdventuresPowerpuff Girls, and many others often brought back almost decades following their debuts. Now, it seems as though Nickelodeon's surreal duo, Ren & Stimpy, are set to receive their own animated reboot as a big update has found its way online as the original show celebrates its 34th anniversary. First premiering as one of the original Nicktoons, the series would oftentimes be as dark as it was hilarious.

The Ren & Stimpy Show first arrived on Nickelodeon on August 11, 1991, garnering five seasons and over fifty episodes to follow along with the crude protagonists. Following the series original end, the canine and feline were rebooted thanks to 2003's Ren And Stimpy: Adult Cartoon Party. This iteration offered a far more mature take on Stimpy and Ren, but failed to catch an audience that would see it live past its initial season on Spike TV.

Comedy Central announced that it had commissioned a reimagening of Nickelodeon's The Ren & Stimpy Show in August 2020, as part of the network tapping into IP across Paramount (then called ViacomCBS) to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South ParkThe Ren & Stimpy Show will join the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie, starring Tracee Ellis Ross.

"We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio," Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, shared in a statement back in 2020 when the news was first announced. "Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation, including South ParkBeavis and Butt-Head, and Clone High, as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations."

Original The Ren & Stimpy Show voice actor Billy West is returning for the English dub of the series.

It will not, however, involve John Kricfalusi, with the show's creator having no creative input into nor receiving any financial remuneration from the new series. Due to a leak of an episode, it has been revealed that Kricfalusi won't be mentioned in the credits.

The leak has revealed, however, that Vanessa Coffey, who helped create Nickelodeon's first three Nicktoons series - Rugrats, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and Doug - is back as an executive producer.

However, Bob Camp (who was initially planned to participate but left the project due to creative differences), is not involved.

Ren & Stimpy's return

The return of Ren and Stimpy has been a bit complicated, with hardly any news of the series being revealed since the reboot's initial announcement.

Then, last year, Comedy Central had planned to debut the series across its international feeds in July, ahead of a wider global rollout, including on Comedy Central USA, launching with the episode segments "Renhattan / Table for Human / Clear Toilet". However, the show was pulled from the schedules just before its planned launch.

Since then, nothing much has been said about the series, until now.

Paramount+, the streaming home for most of Paramount's shows and movies, has added a show page for the reboot, where it's titled Ren and Stimpy Show (2021), indicating that the show was originally meant to premiere in 2021.

Update (1/16/26): Animation veteran Bob Camp, who worked on the original series, has revealed that Comedy Central's Ren & Stimpy reboot has been canceled. Camp has also reportedly been told that a Garfield series in the works has also been canceled at Nickelodeon.

Paramount+'s show page for the Ren & Stimpy reboot doesn't currently feature any episodes, but does offer a synopsis of the series: "Oh Joy! This slapstick buddy comedy centers on a skinny, temperamental chihuahua Ren and his trusting feline sidekick, Stimpy. Together, this twisted twosome find themselves in crazy absurd adventures."

Whilst the addition of a Ren & Stimpy Show (2021) page doesn't necessarily confirm that the reboot is premiering soon, it is a sign that the show may be gearing up for a launch quite soon, whether its on linear TV (Comedy Central) or streaming (Paramount Plus).

The Six Part Limited Series Will Release in 2027

January 15, 2026  – Academy Award®-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables, The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar) will star in and executive produce FEAR NOT. The limited series written by Bash Doran (Outlaw King, Boardwalk Empire) will premiere around the world on Paramount+ next year.

FEAR NOT tells the story of a prolific serial killer, Stephen Morin — accused of more crimes than Ted Bundy — and the unlikely bond he formed with Margy Palm (Anne Hathaway), the last woman he ever kidnapped. Morin's abduction of Palm, which started as a deadly captive situation, took an unlikely turn: one which included compassion, prayer and profound courage. Palm's devotion to her faith and her insistence that Morin could be transformed, became the impetus of a relationship that lasted long after Palm was returned to safety — until Morin received the death penalty.

"At Paramount+, we are always looking for stories that captivate and entertain our audience, and this series will do exactly that," said Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+. "By grounding this chilling true story in the lived experience of our protagonist, Anne is bringing a level of nuance and gravity to the screen that only a performer of her caliber can. We are thrilled to collaborate with Anne, Bash and the rest of this illustrious team and we can’t wait for viewers to see what is sure to be an enthralling limited series.”

Produced by MGM Television, FEAR NOT is written by Bash Doran and executive produced by Steve Stark and Stacey Levin for TOLUCA PICTURES, Helen Estabrook for VANITY FAIR STUDIOS, Anne Hathaway, Adam Shulman and Johnathan Rice for SOMEWHERE PICTURES and Margy, Bart and Noelle Palm. The limited series is based on the Vanity Fair article entitled “Sympathy for the Devil” written by Julie MIller.

Hathaway also has Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, Verity and Flowervale Street coming out in 2026. She is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360, Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.
