Melissa Joan Hart Reflects on James Van Der Beek Being Her ‘First On-Screen Kiss’ On 'Clarissa Explains It All'

‘90s icon Melissa Joan Hart has shared her reaction to the death of Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek. Van Der Beek lost his battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, sparking an outpouring of condolences from former co-stars like Katie Holmes.

Melissa Joan Hart appeared alongside Van Der Beek on the Nickelodeon series Clarissa Explains It All. In a social media post shared after the announcement of Van Der Beek’s death, Hart explained her heartbreak over the passing of her former costar.

Accompanying photos of herself alongside a teenage Van Der Beek, Melissa Joan Hart wrote on Instagram:

"I'm heartbroken to hear that @vanderjames has passed away! He was truly a nice guy, a great father, wonderful actor and will always be my first on screen kiss when he guest starred on #ClarissaExplainsItAll.  Gone way too soon but it seems like he put up one hell of a fight. We ran into each other at the singing game show #WeAreFamily about two years ago when he sang a song with his daughter, encouraging her like a good dad does. My thoughts and prayers go out to his 6 kids, his wife and family!"

Melissa Joan Hart’s fans were quick to reminisce about the Dawson’s Creek star’s career, legacy, and the sadness of his untimely death at 48 years old.

“I remember that episode but I never realized that was him! Wow,” shared one nostalgic fan. Another added, “This is so sad. What a noble fight he put up. ❤️❤️ Love and good thoughts to his family and friends 馃檹”

“You have a wonderful and warm heart, Melissa. Your words are truly kind. James will always be remembered as a great man,” shared one more.

James Van Der Beek’s name is synonymous with his Dawson’s Creek character Dawson Leery, but the iconic ’90s actor celebrated a long and expansive career in TV and film, including guest stints on sitcoms like Clarissa Explains It All.

The teen sitcom aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1994. In the series, Melissa Joan Hart portrayed Clarissa Darling, a witty teenager who breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to the audience.

Early in his career, James Van Der Beek appeared alongside Melissa Joan Hart on the Clarissa Explains It All, episode "Alter Ego" as Paulie, sharing an on-screen kiss which would be Hart’s first. Hart has spoken fondly of the “awkward” first on-screen kiss, sharing humorous anecdotes about the scene in interviews and in her memoir Melissa Explains It All: Tales from My Abnormally Normal Life.

James Van Der Beek is survived by his wife Kimberly Brook and their six children. In a statement shared to social media, Kimberly wrote, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

The quick outpouring of condolences following the news of James Van Der Beek’s death is a testament to his impact both as an actor on hits like Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, as well as the courage and bravery with which he faced his battle with cancer.

James Van Der Beek‘s friends have launched a GoFundMe to financially support his wife and kids following the actor's passing. He’d been diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023, which the fundraiser says put significant financial strain on the family.

“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future,” the GoFundMe page reads. “The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”

The page also explains that all donations will be used to cover “essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education.”

Within two hours of its creation, the fundraiser had already raised more than $200,000.

In November, Van Der Beek revealed that he was auctioning memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues with all proceeds going toward his medical fees. That was after his former Dawson’s Creek co-stars reunited for a table read to benefit F Cancer and Van der Beek. The actor was set to be involved but had to drop out due to illness. Lin-Manuel Miranda took his place for the live stage reading.

Paul Walter Hauser has also been raising funds for Van Der Beek recently. In January, he launched a Cameo campaign to raise $20,000 in support of his fellow actor’s cancer treatments. In his own Instagram post after Van Der Beek’s death, Hauser shared a screenshot with the more than $14,000 he’d raised on the platform.

“Love you, James,” Hauser wrote in his post. “I know you’re in Heaven being pampered with love. The Van Der Beeks will be in our daily prayers and we’ll be drumming up some money to support your beautiful family. Thanks for the body of work and for being one of the good guys.”

Big Time Rush Creator Scott Fellows Settles Lawsuit Against Sony Music

Big Time Rush creator Scott Fellows is reportedly suing Sony Music for allegedly cheating him out of the band's reunion tour profits.

Big Time Rush
Big Time Rush

Fellows, who created Nickelodeon's hit musical comedy series about a fictional boy band, which ran from 2009 to 2013, has brought a series of breach of contract claims against Sony.

He claims the record label intentionally "concocted a bad faith entity shell game" to cut him out of a 2021 licensing deal that allowed Big Time Rush to reunite as an independent entity, in exchange for 10% of future revenues.

During the show's original run, the real-life members of Big Time Rush - Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Logan Henderson and Carlos PenaVega - released music and toured under a deal with Sony Music.

According to Fellows' lawsuit, he received contractual payments amounting to 3.75% of the band's touring revenue until its members went their separate ways in 2014.

As stated in the complaint, when Big Time Rush reunited in 2021, the group struck a deal to go independent from Nickelodeon and Sony Music. The lawsuit reveals that the band licensed its trademarks and past music from Sony and Nickelodeon in exchange for 10% of future revenues.

Fellows' attorneys allege in the lawsuit that Sony "restructured its inter-company arrangements" and his rights to his share of touring revenue were eliminated.

Fellows is now seeking to recoup his cut of Big Time Rush's 2022 reunion tour, as well as the band's In Real Life world tour, which is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday, 9 July.

Update (2/12/26): Scott Fellows, who created the hit show about a fictional boy band that ran on Nickelodeon from 2009 to 2013, sued Sony this past summer, alleging the major music company nefariously structured Big Time Rush’s 2021 reunion deal to cut him out of touring revenues. Now, a Thursday (Jan. 29) federal court notice says the matter has been resolved, Billboard Pro reports.

“The parties have reached a settlement in [principle] of the above-titled matter,” reads the joint filing from Fellows and Sony, which does not spell out any terms of the resolution. Reps for both sides did not immediately return requests for comment on the matter.

The real-life members of Big Time Rush released music and toured under a deal with Sony during the heyday of their Nickelodeon show. According to Fellows’ lawsuit, this deal gave him 3.75% of the band’s touring revenue until its members went their separate ways in 2014.

Big Time Rush reunited in 2021, but this time they opted to go independent. Fellows claims the band licensed its trademarks and catalog in exchange for giving Nickelodeon and Sony 10% of future revenues — but that Sony intentionally wrote the terms of this licensing deal to eliminate his share of the profits.

Fellows’ lawsuit sought to recoup a 3.75% share of the earnings from Big Time Rush’s 2022 reunion tour and the ongoing In Real Life World Tour, which kicked off in July and is set to run through March.

Big Time Rush the band was not named in the lawsuit or accused of any wrong-doing. Reps for the group did not return a request for comment on the settlement.

Paramount Restructures Global Content Distribution Team

Kevin MacLellan, President of Paramount Global Content Distribution and International Networks, has announced a new leadership structure as part of a divisional reorganization that brings together Paramount’s Global Content Licensing, Global Transactional, and International Media Networks businesses.

L-R: Kevin MacLellan, Don McGregor, Pank Patel and Sonia Endler | Paramount, Deadline

The new organization is designed to increase monetization across platforms, position the company for the next phase of global content distribution, and improve network performance worldwide through tighter strategic and operational alignment.

Don McGregor, President, Paramount Content Licensing, will lead Global Content Licensing and Global Transactional, with responsibility for maximizing the value of Paramount’s film and television content across all platforms and windows globally – meaning both domestic U.S. and international territories fall under his purview. His division oversees licensing across SVOD, Pay TV, Free TV, Basic Cable, FVOD/AVOD, FAST, Transactional, Airlines, other non-theatrical, and third-party content representation. Paramount sells the likes of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House, PAW Patrol, School Spirits, South Park, Star Trek, King & Conqueror, Boston Blue and series from the Yellowstone universe, along with movie franchises such as The SpongeBob Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun.

McGregor previously served as sales chief NBCUniversal, and had been consulting for Paramount for several months as terms of his deal were locked down.

McGregor had been running his own production business, Flywheel Media, which is attached to upcoming feature films such as The Angry Birds Movie 3, the animated Paramount pic. Prior to that, he had spent 21 years at NBCU. Flywheel is continuing operations under co-founder Dan Chuba following McGregor’s exit, Deadline reports.

Pank Patel, Head of Paramount International Networks, leads strategy and operations for Paramount’s international media networks with a mandate to streamline operations, improve network performance, and increase monetization. He will work closely with the leaders of Paramount's International Ad Sales unit, Channel 5 in the UK, and Network 10 Australia to ensure strategic alignment and implementation of cross-divisional strategies.

Patel worked as Head of Strategy for Flywheel before exiting for Paramount, and has worked in a senior corporate strategy role at The North Road Company. He also worked alongside McGregor at NBCU, where they were part of a division led by MacLellan, who was President of International Television between 2011 and 2013 and then Chairman of Global Distribution and International until 2020.

Sonia Endler, Head of Finance, Global Content Distribution, partners with senior leadership on financial and strategic planning across the integrated organization, including evaluation of new business models and programming opportunities. She further elevates operational excellence across global markets by reinforcing financial governance and aligning international teams to enterprise standards, ensuring disciplined execution and driving sustainable, long-term performance.

Endler was previously a partner at L.A.-based investor Galactic Road and spent five years at MGM as EVP Finance, TV Content and Worldwide TV Distribution. She also worked at WGN America and Tribune Studios as CFO and was Head of Finance at Whalerock Industries. Further back, she held finance roles at Fox, E! and at Paramount Pictures as a financial analyst.

McGregor, Patel and Endler will all work under Kevin MacLellan.

MacLellan’s restructure comes after Paramount made significant layoffs last year amid major industry contraction. The company came under new owner Skydance Media in August, at which point McLellan’s role was confirmed.

Among those who were let go was former international sales chief Lisa Kramer, who had been President of International TV Licensing at Paramount Global Content Distribution. McGregor’s new role takes in her responsibilities, but is more extensive given the globally-focused nature of his new unit.

Paramount said the new structure would “increase monetization across platforms, position the company for the next phase of global content distribution, and improve network performance worldwide through tighter strategic and operational alignment.”

- Hojo Shin, who plays Min Ho’s half brother Jiwon, has also been upped to a series regular.

- If the name Marius sounds familiar, it is because there is some lore there.Season 2 ended with Kitty and Min Ho busting Stella aka Esther (Audry Huynh) for trying to ruin Min Ho’s dad’s career. The talent competition crowned Eunice winner and recipient of the opportunity to open for Jiwon’s world tour. Kitty asked to join Min Ho on the tour very spur-of-the-moment. Q revealed he was recruited to USC’s summer track program.

- The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film franchise is based on creator and executive producer Jenny Han’s novels of the same name.

- Valentina Garza took over as showrunner for Season 3. Jessica O’Toole helmed Season 2.

What happened in XO, Kitty Season 2?

Season 2 ended with Kitty getting her scholarship renewed so she can come back to KISS for senior year. She also fulfilled her late mother’s wishes by reuniting her fractured family, discovering relatives she never even knew existed.

And, much to her surprise, this teen matchmaker fell for her ex-boyfriend’s best friend, Min Ho, ticking off almost every trope on the rom-com checklist as they went from enemies to friends to could-be lovers. Though their slow-burn romance is still simmering, Kitty asks Min Ho to wait before they part ways for the summer.

Season 2 of the K-drama premiered on Jan. 16, 2025 and debuted at No. 2 on the English TV List with 14.2 million views. The young adult romantic comedy, produced by Awesomeness Studios and ACE Entertainment, appeared in the Top 10 in 89 countries in its first week. The release also inspired viewers to revisit Season 1 (which resurfaced on the English TV List at No. 6 with 3.1 million views) and the original 2018 To All the Boys film the week after Season 2’s release (which reappeared at No. 6 on the English films list with 3.1 million views).
