Paul Brown Steps Down As 'PAW Patrol' Series Director

Paul Brown has stepped down as series director of PAW Patrol, Nickelodeon's beloved preschool series produced by Spin Master Entertainment, after serving one year and 11 months in the role at Toronto-based Guru Studio.

Paul Brown

Brown was appointed as series director of PAW Patrol in March 2023, taking the reigns from long-time director Charles E. Bastien, who sadly passed away earlier that year.

"I’m unbelievably proud to have been the Director of Paw Patrol for two years but the time has come to move on," Brown, who stepped down from the position in January, said in a post on LinkedIn.

"It’s been an emotional journey that has been inspirational, challenging, eye-opening and educational for me," added Brown. "I’m very excited to be moving on to something new and to continue working in the industry I love. To my awesome team: The sheer number of heart-warming messages I’ve received from you in the past couple weeks has been humbling and has meant more to me than you’ll ever know. Stay positive. Be proud of your work. Remember that the foundation of your job is to entertain kids & make them happy. Everything else is just noise."

Brown previously served as a director on Rusty Rivets, which was also animated by Guru Studio for Spin Master and Nickelodeon, and has also worked in various departments on shows such as Julius Jr., which aired on Nick Jr., Lucas the Spider, Angela Anaconda, Amphibia, and Johnny Test.

Update (10/3): Dipesh Mistry has been revealed as the new director of PAW Patrol. Mistry has previously worked on productions such as Nickelodeon's Rusty Rivets, and Apple TV+'s Pretzel and the Puppies.

Original post:

Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to The Boss Baby: Back in Business, and will premiere DreamWorks Animation and Netflix's popular CG-animated series on Friday, October 3 at 5:00 p.m. (ET/PT) during Shocktober.

The Boss Baby: Back in Business

Audiences will get to see more of the inner workings of what keeps the global adorability market running smoothly in The Boss Baby: Back in Business. Picking up where the Oscar-nominated The Boss Baby film left off, the CG-animated series follows as Boss Baby learns to navigate his new life.

Boss Baby wants what any modern baby executive wants: everything! He loves both his corporate and family life, and has the skills to succeed in both. He’s got moxie, he’s got corporate savvy — but most importantly, he’s got a big brother, best friend and partner in crime in, Tim Templeton. With puppies out of the way (for now) business is booming for Baby Corp, but the challenges are great, and there are new threats to Baby Love – nightmare babies out in the wild whose bad behavior is terrible for the brand, and cats bent on absolute anarchy. It’s a lot to handle, but that’s what it takes to be the boss, baby.

From Emmy-winning executive producer Brandon Sawyer (Penguins of Madagascar), Back in Business features the voices of JP Karliak (New Looney Tunes, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz) as Boss Baby; Pierce Gagnon (Looper, Tomorrowland) as Tim; YouTube sensation Flula Borg as Boss Baby’s supervisor Mega Fat CEO Baby; Kari Wahlgren (Fairly OddParents) as Marsha Krinkle; and Kevin Michael Richardson (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as 99th percentile bruiser baby Jimbo. Special guests include Tony Hale (Sanjay and Craig) and Nicole Sullivan (Wendell & Vinnie).

The Boss Baby: Back in Business ran for 49 episodes (and one special) across four seasons between April 6, 2018 – November 17, 2020 on Netflix. The series previously aired on Nickelodeon Netherlands.

As part of the streaming business model, linear rights to shows from outside studios revert back to the producers several years in (unless Netflix buys out all rights as it has done with signature non-owned series like Orange Is the New Black).

This is most prevalent in animation, and especially in kids animation where most of Netflix’s programming is from third-party suppliers. The Boss Baby: Back in Business comes from DreamWorks Animation, as does the streamer’s Gabby’s Dollhouse.

Nickelodeon has become a go-to destination for Netflix kids animated series whose linear rights have become available. So far, it has picked up DWA’s The Boss Baby and Gabby’s Dollhouse, both distributed by NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution, as well as Unicorn Academy and Vida the Vet from Canadian company Spin Master Entertainment. (The shows remain available on Netflix for streaming.)

On the adult animation side, Netflix hit BoJack Horseman was produced by Tornante Co. which sold its linear rights to Comedy Central in 2018.

Nickelodeon has also sold original programming to Netflix, where most stream as Netflix Originals. Titles include Glitch Techs and Pinky Malinky, along with movies such as Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, The Loud House Movie, The Casagrandes Movie, Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling, and Invader ZIM: Enter the Florpus. The streamer also acquired the rights to Star Trek: Prodigy following its cancelation.
