There’s a brand-new retro-styled Rugrats game coming out later this year, with a free demo currently available for a limited time. Here’s what to know, and how to claim it.
A brand-new retro-styled Rugrats video game is coming soon, but some players can already check out a free demo.
Rugrats premiered in August 1991 are one of Nickelodeon's original Nicktoons. Depicting the trials and tribulations of the adult world through the eyes of adventurous babies, Rugrats is perhaps the quintessential '90s cartoon, a perfect example of the Klasky Csupo style that dominated the decade. The revival series, also called Rugrats, is currently in its second season on Paramount+, but the new game clings more closely to the original.
Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is scheduled for release in March 2024, but there's already a playable demo via Steam Next Fest. Developed by The MIX Games and Wallride, Adventures in Gameland is a 2D platformer starring the Rugrats - Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Phil, and Lil - as they traverse six grown-up-size levels full of challenges. Each baby has their own unique abilities to help with overcoming distinct obstacles. Babies can be swapped in and out mid-level for a flexible puzzle-solving experience.
Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is playable in two game modes: one that resembles the classic 8-bit style of The Rugrats Movie for the Game Boy Color, and another with hand-drawn art identical to the original cartoon. It features both single-player and two-player split-screen, with players working together to do what a baby's gotta do. As a result, it's designed largely for co-op, with each player controlling a member of the Rugrats crew.
On release, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland will be available for all modern platforms: Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and NES. That's right - through collaboration with Limited Run Games, there will be a special, physical NES edition of Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, which should be available for pre-order soon. This will likely be a very limited edition, as demand for NES games has understandably gone down in the past 30-odd years. No price or final release date has been announced for the full game yet, but with a demo already available, it probably won't be long.
The playable demo is part of Steam Next Fest, an annual celebration of upcoming releases by the digital game store. It'll only be available only while the event is ongoing, from February 5 through February 12, and can be claimed through the game's official Steam page. Unfortunately, that means the Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland demo is only playable on PC. Those using other platforms will have to wait for March to see what Adventures in Gameland has to offer.
Between nods to the NES era and fresh gameplay, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is the perfect way to discover or rediscover a love for the classic cartoon. Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is available as a free demo via Steam Next Fest until February 12, with a full release to follow next month.
Limited Run - A New Game for the Old Nintendo | IGN
We stopped by the Limited Run Games booth at PAX East 2024 in Boston to check out some of their upcoming games, including an all-new Rugrats game originally created for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This isn't a port of an old game, either: it's an all-new platformer coming to consoles and PC with modern graphics… that you can switch to the old 8-bit style when you're feeling nostalgic. We also checked out Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, Renaine, and Rose and Camellia Collection, which is described as "anime Downton Abby with slapping." And of course, we picked up a thing or two at the booth for ourselves. I mean, we were there anyway.
