HOLLYWOOD, Calif.–May 22, 2024–Nickelodeon is celebrating SpongeBob SquarePants’ 25th anniversary all year and beyond, kicking off with SpongeBob SquarePants (voiced by Tom Kenny) and Patrick Star (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke) set to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2024, live from their undersea home of Bikini Bottom on Saturday, July 13, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT). The Slime-filled, immersive broadcast marks the first time animated characters will host a full-length awards show and commences an array of multiplatform initiatives for one of the most popular characters and beloved animated series of all time.


Kids’ Choice Awards 2024 premieres just ahead of the SpongeBob series anniversary, which launched July 17, 1999, and will take place in an animated setting through enhanced graphics and advanced augmented reality, simulcasting across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons and Nick Jr. Honoring kids’ and fans’ favorites across movies, television, music, sports and more, Kids’ Choice Awards 2024 will be held at Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles. Nominees, presenters, and celebrity appearances will be announced soon.

Following Kids’ Choice Awards 2024, Nickelodeon will roll out a wide-ranging slate of 25th anniversary programs for SpongeBob SquarePants that invites audiences around the globe to LIVE, EAT, GAME, PLAY and WATCH LIKE A SPONGE. This includes all-new original content across the Paramount ecosystem; one-of-a-kind location-based experiences; exclusive consumer products and games, first-to-market partnerships and so much more. Highlights of the campaign are as follows:

Content

  • SpongeBob SquarePants Anniversary Specials: A series of specially produced all-new episodes, with Easter eggs and nods to fan-favorite moments, will debut in July on Nickelodeon around the world and continue to roll out through the year. Viewers will catch up with former jellyfishing champion Kevin C. Cucumber, journey through different eras of Bikini Bottom, travel 2000 years into the future with Plankton and more.
  • Paramount+: Paramount+ is the streaming home for SpongeBob fans with more content than any other streaming service, including a number of titles joining the service this July: SpongeBob SquarePants seasons 1-13; original spinoff series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, and season one of The Patrick Star Show; theatrical films, such as The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie; and anniversary-themed specials throughout the year.
  • Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie: Bikini Bottom’s resident scientist and squirrel Sandy Cheeks journeys to Texas to save Bikini Bottom from a villainous plot, in the first movie starring a supporting character from the franchise debuting on Netflix Aug. 2.
  • Play Like a Sponge UK Shorts: Nickelodeon UK and ParalympicsGB have partnered to produce Play like a Sponge, a shortform series that inspires kids to find their inner SpongeBob as he cheers them on in their quest to learn about and sample new sports with paralympic athletes ahead of the upcoming games in Paris this August.

Location-Based Experiences

  • The Krabby Patty Kollab: For the first time ever, the iconic Krabby Patty will surface to the real world and onto menus across North America and in London through “The Krabby Patty Kollab.” This fall, chefs and celebrities will use their culinary talents to bring hundreds of unique interpretations of the secret formula to life, giving hungry fans the opportunity to sample a variety of meals inspired by the most coveted recipe in all of Bikini Bottom.   • San Diego Comic-Con: Nickelodeon and Paramount+ will celebrate SpongeBob SquarePants through one-of-a-kind immersive fan-first experiences, exclusive digital content, consumer products and giveaways, to be announced in the coming months.
  • The SpongeBob Musical Contest: Concord Theatricals and Nickelodeon have launched The SpongeBob Musical Contest, which will award ten schools or youth groups in the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec) with a complimentary license package to perform The SpongeBob Musical between September 2024 and December 2025. The contest is open to all schools and youth groups, particularly Title 1 or other schools or programs in under-resourced communities. Click HERE for details.
  • Science of SpongeBob 3.0: Nickelodeon Our World and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) are celebrating 25 years of everyone's favorite porous pal with Science of SpongeBob 3.0, an online and in-person educational module that introduces kids and families to the science that inspired the undersea world in the series.
  • SpongeBob’s Crazy Carnival Ride: Created by Sally Dark Rides in partnership with Paramount, the first-ever SpongeBob SquarePants interactive dark ride is now open at Circus Circus Las Vegas, taking guests on a hijinks-filled ride through Bikini Bottom--brought to life through vibrant sets, special effects, animatronics and vivid integrated projections.
  • Aquarium Experience: In select aquariums across the U.S. and globe this summer, visitors will be treated to an immersive SpongeBob experience with exhibit signage, branded scavenger hunts, episode screenings, and more.
  • Italy’s Mirabilandia Amusement Park: Nickelodeon Italy is partnering with Mirabilandia amusement park in Emilia Romagna, Italy this July for an unforgettable day for park goers filled with SpongeBob-themed activities, character meet and greets and other surprises.
  • Colombia’s Parque Arauco Malls:  Nickelodeon Latin America is partnering with Parque Arauco malls in Colombia for a SpongeBob SquarePants mall experience in July and August where kids can learn about ocean conservation and explore Bikini Bottom with games, virtual reality and photo ops for the whole family.

  • Funko Pop! Figures and Pop Plush: Funko will launch seven new SpongeBob SquarePants 25th anniversary Funko Pop! Figures this summer, pulled from iconic moments throughout the series, such as DoodleBob, Caveman SpongeBob and SpongeBob with Glove Light.   • Creator Consultant, SpongeBob TikTok: Nickelodeon is diving deep into the heart of Bikini Bottom to recruit a bubbly, creative, and meme-savvy social media creator to work on the SpongeBob SquarePants’ TikTok account. Those interested in making a splash can apply to the opportunity here.

Nickelodeon Renames 'HexVet' as 'HexVets and Magic Pets'

Nickelodeon has slightly changed the name of the network's upcoming animated preschool series, HexVet!

According to recent filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Nickelodeon has renamed HexVet as HexVets and Magic Pets.

The filings also reveal that Nickelodeon's parent company, Paramount Global, has applied to trademark the show under NICE Classes 41 (education, entertainment, sporting and cultural services) and 28 (games; toys; sports equipment).

Announced during Nickelodeon Upfront in March 2022, Nickelodeon is bringing the magical world of Willows Whisper to life with HexVets and Magic Pets, a brand-new animated preschool series based on the eponymous BOOM! Studios graphic novels by Sam Davies. The CG and 2D-hybrid adventure-comedy series (20 episodes) follows unlikely best friends Nan and Clarion as they navigate life's weird and wacky challenges, while apprenticing to be magical veterinarians for fantastical creatures.

Paramount Consumer Products will lead consumer products cross-category licensing worldwide for the HexVet property.

“The high-stakes adventures, wild antics and heartfelt camaraderie Nan and Clarion have in the HexVet graphic novels are all great qualities we look for in an animated series,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation. “It’s incredibly exciting to expand the HexVet world with an original series that will deepen the connection young readers have with the novels and capture the imagination of new fans of all ages.”

“The vibrant world of HexVet gives our creative team an incredible opportunity to translate the enchantment of the series into products across multiple categories,” said Pam Kaufman, President, Paramount Consumer Products. “We strategically approach each new IP in a unique way and look forward to developing items that highlight the show’s core themes of magic, teamwork and compassion for animals, allowing kids to continue their adventures with Nan and Clarion.”

As HexVets in training, Nan and Clarion are ready to tackle medical maladies in beasts magical or mundane, find their familiars, and earn their wands and pointy hats--all while dodging covens of animal smugglers and dragons with heartburn. Under the tutelage of the talented Dr. Talon, these young HexVets in training will learn how to cure any animal, from a pygmy phoenix with bird flu to a unicorn with a broken horn.

HexVet is an all-ages original graphic novels series written by beloved cartoonist Sam Davies and published by BOOM! Studios through their award-winning KaBOOM! imprint, home to R.L. Stine’s Just Beyond and more. The graphic novel series debuted in 2018 with HexVet: Witches-in-Training to much critical acclaim, then released the second book, HexVet: The Flying Surgery, in 2019. HexVet was a Scholastic Book Fair selection in 2019, and has since sold over 60,000 copies and is distributed internationally in over 132 countries. BOOM! Studios is slated to release additional volumes in the series.

HexVets and Magic Pets is developed for television by Nicole Dubuc (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Rocketeer), who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Frank Molieri (Transformers: Rescue Bots, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie) serves as co-executive producer and Kendall Michele Haney as story editor. The series is also executive produced by Stephen Christy (Just Beyond) and Ross Richie (2 Guns), with Mette Norkjaer serving as co-producer, for BOOM! Studios. Production of HexVet for Nickelodeon Animation is overseen by Eryk Casemiro, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation, Global Series Content. Kate Crownover serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

A premiere date for HexVets and Magic Pets is still to be announced, however, when the series was first announced, Nickelodeon planned to launch HexVets and Magic Pets in the U.S. in 2023, followed by a international launch.

Update (8/9) - Writer and illustrator Noah Wait has revealed that Nickelodeon is slated to premiere HexVets and Magic Pets during "early 2024". Wait, who wrote two episodes for Bubble Guppies season six, has written three episodes of HexVets and Magic Pets.

CBS Sports' Presentation of Super Bowl LVIII Is Most-Watched Telecast In History With 123.4 Million Viewers Across Platforms

CBS Sports’ coverage of SUPER BOWL LVIII, which featured the Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers, delivered the most-watched telecast in history with a Total Audience Delivery of 123.4 million average viewers across all platforms, including the CBS Television Network, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, and CBS Sports, Univision and NFL digital properties, including NFL+.

Viewership figures are based on Nielsen Fast National data and Adobe Analytics. Final Nielsen data will be available tomorrow.

RECORD-SETTING VIEWERSHIP

  • Super Bowl LVIII is the most-watched program ever, averaging 123.4 million viewers across all platforms, up +7% vs. last year’s Super Bowl which was the previous record (115.1 million).
  • More than 200 million viewers (202.4) watched all or part of Super Bowl LVIII across networks, the highest unduplicated total audience in history and up +10% vs. last year’s Super Bowl (184 million).

CBS LEADS THE WAY WITH LARGEST AUDIENCE EVER FOR SINGLE NETWORK

  • Super Bowl LVIII on CBS led the way with 120.0 million viewers, the largest audience in history for a single network.
  • Super Bowl LVIII capped off a record-setting season for CBS Sports. The NFL ON CBS scored the most-watched regular season since the NFL returned to CBS in 1998 as well as the Network’s best postseason viewership since 1998.

  • Super Bowl LVIII is the most-streamed Super Bowl in history, led by a record-setting audience on Paramount+.

Nielsen: Nielsen, which has been tracking Super Bowl ratings since the first game in January 1967, reports Super Bowl LVIII on CBS, Univision, Nickelodeon, Paramount+ and other digital services averaged 123.4 million viewers (persons 2+), making it the most watched program in the U.S. The game was also a 7% increase from last year’s record audience of 115.1 million viewers (which Nielsen had revised upward last May).

According to Nielsen’s fast-nationals and Adobe Analytics, the CBS feed averaged 120 million viewers. Univision averaged 2.2 million viewers, making it the most watched Super Bowl on any Spanish language network. The Nickelodeon simulcast, which had a SpongeBob themed feed, averaged about 1.2 million viewers. (By comparison, in 2023 Nickelodeon averaged 190,000 viewers in primetime). The Paramount+ audience was included in the CBS total, the network said Super Bowl LVIII had also set a streaming record.

(Nielsen began including out-of-home viewing in their ratings service in September 2020. Sports Media Watch said, unofficially, the 2017 Super Bowl overtime game Patriots-Falcons had averaged 124.6 million which included out-of-home viewing but not included. Several other Super Bowls which had only measured in-home viewing may have also surpassed Super Bowl LVIII if out-of-home was officially measured.)

Nielsen also reported 202.4 million viewers had tuned in to some portion (a minimum of six minutes) of Super Bowl LVIII, a year-over-year increase of 10% (184 million). Nielsen noted the audience for the Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969 on the (then) televised by the three broadcast television networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) averaged anywhere from 125 to 150 million viewers. The 2½ hour M*A*S*H finale in February 1983 (also on CBS) remains the highest rated TV program of all-time.

iSpot: According to preliminary data from iSpot, a cross-platform audience measurement provider, Super Bowl LVIII averaged 126.63 million total (Persons 2+) viewers across CBS, Univision, Nickelodeon as well as streamed on Paramount+. According to iSpot it was a year-over-year increase of 10.9%. CBS accounted for the lion’s share of the audience averaging 121.9 million viewers (including streaming and out-of-home viewing). The Spanish language Univision averaged 2.9 million viewers and Nickelodeon averaged 1.75 million viewers. In total, the out-of-home audience (bars/restaurants, etc.) averaged 25.87 million viewers.

iSpot reported viewing peaked at 8:38 p.m. (ET) during the halftime show headlined by Usher. Among adults 18+, of the 81 ads from 65 advertisers, the most watched TV commercial was Etsy’s France spot that ran at 8:23 p.m. (ET).

Samba TV: Samba TV, another audience measurement provider, also reported a year-over-year increase in viewing for Super Bowl LVIII. According to Samba’s Smart TV panel, 39 million U.S. households watched the Super Bowl, an increase of 6% (36.8 million). Samba also notes it was the highest Super Bowl household audience in six years. The halftime show had 30.1 million U.S. households, a 5% increase from last year. Samba said that Poppi was the most watched Super Bowl ad with an average of more than 29.1 million U.S. households. Samba TV also noted the audience skewed towards white households with an increase of 5% compared to the overall U.S. and baby boomer households as Adults 65-74 grew year-over-year by 6%.

AdImpact: Also, according to audience estimates from AdImpact, Super Bowl LVIII viewing peaked at 115.5 million just before the halftime show. Using their Smart TV panel, 59% of the audience watched the game on linear television, 14% viewed the “big game” on YouTube. The remaining 27% of the audience had streamed the game on another provider

Super Bowl LVIII will be remembered for several reasons: It was the first Super Bowl played in Las Vegas. CBS charged advertisers a reported $7 million for a :30 ad, making it the most expensive television commercial to date. It was only the second of 58 Super Bowls games to go to overtime and time-wise the longest ever played.

With Kansas City’s victory 25-22 victory over San Francisco, it confirmed, for many, the Chiefs are the team of the 2020’s. Also, Kansas City, won its second consecutive Super Bowl, becoming the first team since the New England Patriots (the last NFL dynasty) 19 years ago, to accomplish that feat. Over the past five years, it was the Chiefs fourth Super Bowl appearance in the “big game” and third victory. In the process, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been named Super Bowl MVP three times.

Leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, the ratings (per Nielsen) for the NFL had been on the rise. During the 2023 regular season, the average audience across all networks was 17.9 million, a year-over-year increase of 7% and the second highest total after the 2015 season of 18.1 million. The 12-game post season averaged a record 38.5 million viewers, a year-over-year increase of 9%.

Part of the audience increase can be attributed to the “Taylor Swift effect”. Her relationship with Travis Kelce of Kansas City has boosted NFL ratings among her fan base a.k.a. “Swifties”. In analyzing TV ratings, The New York Times NYT -0.3%, using “back of the envelope calculations”, estimates that this season when Swift is at a Chiefs game, TV ratings for late Sunday games increased by 9% and for early Sunday games the audience grew by 16%.

Taylor Swift was at Super Bowl LVIII.
