Jill Sobule, 'Harriet the Spy', 'Unfabulous' Singer-Songwriter, Passes Away Aged 66

Groundbreaking singer-songwriter Jill Sobule sadly died on Thursday, May 1 at the age of 66. Her death was announced by her spokesman, David Elkin, who said she died in a house fire in the Minneapolis suburb of Woodbury. Sobule had been on tour and was scheduled to play a hometown concert Friday night in Denver.

Sobule, beloved among the songwriter community and known for her political activism, broke through in the ’90s with songs like “I Kissed a Girl” and “Supermodel.” The former was the first openly gay song to crack the top 20 on the Billboard charts, the latter was featured in the 1995 film Clueless. Sobule had also worked with Nickelodeon over the years, including contributing the song "The Secretive Life" to the Harriet the Spy soundtrack and penning songs for Nickelodeon's mid-2000's comedy series, Unfabulous, for which she also sung the show's theme song.
