SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2 Preview: F Is for Friends

Restart.run visited Nickelodeon Animation Studio to try the upcoming Apple Arcade platformer and speak to the team behind it.

SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2

Similar to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, Apple offers its own gaming subscription service, Apple Arcade, with an ever-expanding catalog of games for users to play. The catalog will expand again in December with the addition of Nickelodeon's upcoming mobile game, SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2. Ahead of its launch, Restart.run was invited to go hands-on with the upcoming game and chat with some of the team at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California.

A question you may be asking yourself is, 'What is SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2?' The best way to answer that question is by letting Senior Producer at Paramount Games, Charles Carr, explain.

"It's a 2.5D side scroller – [it's] very authentic SpongeBob [and] very accessible to anyone of any age. If you're familiar with other platforming games such as Rayman or Mario, you'll be able to jump right into it."

Upon loading into the game, the first thing I noticed was how closely it resembled the show. In a lot of ways, it feels as if you're playing through another episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. It's because the art style is almost a one-to-one match for the show, the writing is exactly what you expect, and having the original voice cast really glues it all together. This was by design; Carr even made a point of explaining that it was primarily thanks to Old Skull, which is a studio based in Léon, France. The fact that the show is also mainly in 2D helps make the game as close to the source material as possible.

"The show is essentially a side-scroller. So having a game that plays with the characters being 2D worked out really well," Carr says. "Even though it looks like a game, people would always have the impression that it looks like the show – [Despite] all of the visual enhancements when we're converting it to 3D."

As for the story itself in SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2, an army of robots and Plankton's cousins have begun attacking Bikini Bottom. To prevent them from fully taking over, SpongeBob and Plankton have joined forces to ensure that doesn't happen. Both bring something uniquely different to the table and have vastly different playstyles that surprisingly come together when needed.

For example, when playing as SpongeBob, it feels as if you're playing something akin to Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. There are various enemies that you can defeat by jumping on their heads or by running through them with the weapons you pick up. On top of that, there's also a swinging mechanic that is very similar to everyone's favorite Kong.

Plankton, however, couldn't be more different. He'll often be playable whenever you need to fit in a tight space that's inaccessible to SpongeBob. Once you're inside, you'll be tasked with avoiding a series of traps that'll often end with you opening up a locked area or playing a key part in defeating a boss.

But the two can come together to create something that's both equally horrifying and funny at the same time. In certain situations, SpongeBob transforms into various vehicles, including gliders, tanks, and even a unique jumping stick. Of course, all of this is accompanied by Plankton's ingenuity that'll always give him some kind of buff.

"Plankton is joining forces with SpongeBob reluctantly, and SpongeBob is just game for laughs," Carr says. "That's the relationship we had to make sure was displayed and presented across the whole game. It's always got to be a partnership. Either one of the characters wouldn't make it through all on their own."

One thing that caught me off guard while playing was how fun couch co-op is with a friend. Something worth pointing out is that SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2 is playable on various Apple devices, and the co-op section was shown on a giant TV with two PlayStation 5 controllers that my co-op partner and I used. But the game can be played with most Bluetooth controllers.

What was so appealing about playing co-op was the variety of playstyles it introduced. Because now Plankton is playable in a zone that is usually locked to just SpongeBob, and he can now be used to help SpongeBob reach areas that may be hard to get to. Unfortunately, though, the same can't be said about SpongeBob, because he'll still be locked out of the Plankton-specific areas when they occur. The only downside I found to playing couch co-op was how tied it was to SpongeBob. For example, if player one began moving forward, Plankton would be left behind, and catching up could be daunting at times. But despite that, I enjoyed going toe-to-toe with an army of robots with another person, because it was mindless fun.

The game itself wasn't very challenging. There was never really a moment when I found myself stuck on any puzzle or boss fight. Even though it was fairly easy to get from A to B, it didn't take away from the enjoyment I was having. This was mainly due to how the world was presented and how interactive many of the things were.

One example of this is how the team uses the 2.5D aspects. Whenever you're walking down the street, certain parts of the building become more visible, often revealing fun art or new areas to explore. While playing, I often found myself running back and forth to see how different certain characters and areas looked from various angles. This also helped me find new places to explore. Similar to other platformers like Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, there was often a cannon that I could use to shoot myself over to an entirely new area of the map.

What was particularly enjoyable about this was that using these cannons was never mandatory when it came to completing a level. Instead, it offered players a chance to further explore them and find any collectables that are waiting to be discovered.

Even though I was only able to play the game for roughly an hour and a half, I noticed that there was a lot for players to experience. There are various worlds that you'll be able to explore, and each one has its own set of levels and a boss fight themed around the world.

All in all, everything I got to experience while playing SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2 was pure fun. It's extremely light-hearted and goofy, which is precisely what you'd expect from a video game themed around SpongeBob SquarePants. Easily one of the best parts of the game was couch co-op. Since the game isn't all that difficult, I could easily see myself playing it with someone who may not be all that familiar with gaming, so they can be exposed to the hobby a bit more.

SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit 2 is scheduled to release on December 4 exclusively on Apple Arcade. Head over to Apple Arcade guide to learn more about the service and what a subscription provides.
