'Bossy Bear', 'Monster High', 'Transformers: EarthSpark' and 'The Loud House' Receive Nominations In 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization, has announced the very exciting news that Nickelodeon has received two nominations in the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards!

Bossy Bear and Monster High have each received a nomination in the "Outstanding Children’s Programming" category.

Meanwhile, The Loud House and Transformers: EarthSpark have both been nominated for the "Outstanding Kids & Family Programming or Film – Animated" award.

Additionally, the Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies has been nominated for "Outstanding New Series".

The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. Since 1990, the GLAAD Media Awards have grown to be the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally.

Nominees for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards reflect work published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2023. This year, GLAAD announced 310 nominees across 33 categories.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies, which fund GLAAD’s work to accelerate LGBTQ acceptance and visibility in media, will be held this year in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, March 14, 2024 and in New York City, at the Hilton Midtown, on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis serves as Executive Producer of the 35th GLAAD Media Awards, alongside GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro and Anthony Allen Ramos. GLAAD’s Tony Morrison will serve as Supervising Producer and Jose Useche will serve as Producer. The ceremonies will be produced in partnership with STAMP Event Co.

In a statement GLAAD President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sarah Kate Ellis said:

“For 35 years, the GLAAD Media Awards has provided the global stage for LGBTQ creators, alongside industry talent and leaders to be celebrated and supported. At a time when the LGBTQ community is under attack by false narratives and misinformation, when less than half of American say they are familiar with transgender and nonbinary people, and when one in five Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ, this year’s nominees powerfully reflect the realities of LGBTQ existence today, in our communities and around the globe. Amid a summer of union strikes across Hollywood, the stakes have never been higher to maintain the progress of LGBTQ visibility and representation across all media, from film, television, music, journalism, publishing and more.”

Last year, GLAAD’s 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, streamed exclusively on Hulu and can be watched here. The program featured groundbreaking appearances by Christina Aguilera who received GLAAD’s Advocate for Change Award and was introduced by Club Q Survivor, Michael Anderson. Bad Bunny was honored with GLAAD’s Vanguard Award and was introduced by Ricky Martin; Jeremy Pope received GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award and was introduced by Gabrielle Union.

The New York ceremony for the 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards was hosted by producer, Critics Choice-nominated actor and GLAAD Award winner, Harvey Guillén (The Thundermans). The evening opened with a special performance by multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter and Tony Award-winning Broadway icon, Idina Menzel, with the global debut of her new hit, Move.

About Bossy Bear:

From husband and wife team David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim (UglyDolls), and based on the popular book series by Horvath, the series (30 episodes) follows Bossy Bear, an overly-enthusiastic extrovert, and Turtle, a thoughtful introvert--unlikely besties who make the perfect team for navigating silly childhood adventures in their Koreatown-inspired city of Pleasantburg.

The first season of Bossy Bear will feature real-life couple Lance Bass and Michael Turchin in recurring guest voice roles as the parents to Ginger (Beahlen Deacon), Bossy Bear’s older sister Bissy’s bestie aka her “squirrelfriend.”  Bass and Turchin voice Tyler, a laid-back owl, and Greg, an intense chipmunk, respectively, who run a vegetarian and kosher food truck called Latke Love.

Rounding out the voice cast for Bossy Bear are series regulars: Jayden Ham (Sea of Lights, Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge) as Bossy, an extroverted bear whose big imagination and endless enthusiasm lands him in hilarious situations; Jaba Keh (Sesame Street) as Turtle, Bossy’s patient, pure-hearted and empathetic best friend; Claudia Choi (Her, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as Bossy’s Mom, the funny and athletic mother who has eyes in the back of her head and Gran-Gran, Turtle’s wise, loving grandmother who knows how to have a good time; and Shaun Baer (Chicago PD) as Bossy’s Dad, the store manager of an electronics shop who has a PhD in Dad jokes; and Viva Lee (Polaris, Deadly Class) as Bissy, Bossy’s older sister who thinks she knows everything about being an adult and can play an okay keytar.

David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim are the creative minds behind the UglyDolls franchise. Horvath also penned the Bossy Bear book series (Hyperion), inspired by a blend of Korean and U.S. pop culture.

Bossy Bear marks Nickelodeon’s third project with Imagine Kids+Family, following live-action adventure series The Astronauts and The Tiny Chef Show, starring the titular social media sensation and herbivore.

Bossy Bear made its debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on March 6 where it scored Nickelodeon its biggest preschool launch since the 2019 debut of Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. The debut episode posted strong double-digit year-over-year gains with Kids 2-5 (1.1/71K), up 83%.

Production of Bossy Bear for Nickelodeon Animation is overseen by Eryk Casemiro, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation, Global Series Content. Max Goodman serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series. Nickelodeon UK to Premiere 'Bossy Bear' on July 24

Viewers will embark on outlandish misadventures with quintessential odd couple--Bossy Bear and Turtle--in Nickelodeon’s brand-new animated preschool series Bossy Bear, debuting Monday 24th July 2023 at 7:00am on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland. Produced in partnership with Imagine Kids+Family, new episodes of Bossy Bear will continue to roll out weekdays at 7:00am on Nick UK & Eire.

From husband and wife team David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim (UglyDolls), and based on the popular book series by Horvath, the series (30 episodes) follows Bossy Bear, an overly-enthusiastic extrovert, and Turtle, a thoughtful introvert--unlikely besties who make the perfect team for navigating silly childhood adventures in their Koreatown-inspired city of Pleasantburg.

The first season of Bossy Bear will feature real-life couple Lance Bass and Michael Turchin in recurring guest voice roles as the parents to Ginger (Beahlen Deacon), Bossy Bear’s older sister Bissy’s bestie aka her “squirrelfriend.”  Bass and Turchin voice Tyler, a laid-back owl, and Greg, an intense chipmunk, respectively, who run a vegetarian and kosher food truck called Latke Love.

Rounding out the voice cast for Bossy Bear are series regulars: Jayden Ham (Sea of Lights, Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge) as Bossy, an extroverted bear whose big imagination and endless enthusiasm lands him in hilarious situations; Jaba Keh (Sesame Street) as Turtle, Bossy’s patient, pure-hearted and empathetic best friend; Claudia Choi (Her, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as Bossy’s Mom, the funny and athletic mother who has eyes in the back of her head and Gran-Gran, Turtle’s wise, loving grandmother who knows how to have a good time; and Shaun Baer (Chicago PD) as Bossy’s Dad, the store manager of an electronics shop who has a PhD in Dad jokes; and Viva Lee (Polaris, Deadly Class) as Bissy, Bossy’s older sister who thinks she knows everything about being an adult and can play an okay keytar.

David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim are the creative minds behind the UglyDolls franchise. Horvath also penned the Bossy Bear book series (Hyperion), inspired by a blend of Korean and U.S. pop culture.

Bossy Bear is executive produced by: Imagine Entertainment Executive Chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard; Imagine Kids+Family’s Elly Kramer Posner; Stephanie Sperber; David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim; Bob Mittenthal (It’s Pony, The Loud House) for Nickelodeon Animation; and Ashley Postlewaite (Tom and Jerry in New York, The Mr. Men Show) for Renegade Animation. Jeff D’Elia (Captain Underpants, Doug Unplugs, Rugrats) serves as story editor and Chil Kong is consulting producer.

Bossy Bear marks Nickelodeon’s third project with Imagine Kids+Family, following live-action adventure series The Astronauts and The Tiny Chef Show, starring the titular social media sensation and herbivore.

Bossy Bear made its debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on March 6 where it scored Nickelodeon its biggest preschool launch since the 2019 debut of Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. The debut episode posted strong double-digit year-over-year gains with Kids 2-5 (1.1/71K), up 83%.

Production of Bossy Bear for Nickelodeon Animation is overseen by Eryk Casemiro, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation, Global Series Content. Max Goodman serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series. Bossy Bear and the gang celebrate Korean Children's Day in a brand new music video!

It’s a very special day for Korea, for May 5th means Children’s Day! In celebration, the characters of Nickelodeon’s Bossy Bear are celebrating! Nick Jr. has released an official music video for the occasion on their brand new Nick Jr Music YouTube channel, check it out below!

"It's Children's Day, a very special Korean holiday, and Bossy Bear has a song to sing just for this very special day! Join Bossy Bear in singing to celebrate 어린이날 (pronounced eorininal) - which is Children’s Day in Korean!"

Bossy Bear follows the titular Bossy (Jayden Ham) and his best friend Turtle (Jaba Keh) as they navigate the ins and outs of everyday life. Along the ride for fun are Bossy Bear’s parents (Claudia Choi and Shaun Baer), and Bossy’s little sister Bissy (Viva Lee). Choi also plays Gran-Gran, Turtle’s loving grandmother.

David Horvath and his wife Sun-Min Kim teamed up to create the series. Bossy Bear is inspired by their lives both living in Seoul and Los Angeles. The show takes place in the Koreatown-inspired city of Pleasantburg. Korean culture has been a staple in the series from day one, when the show’s grand premiere centered around Bossy Bear’s sister, Bissy, gaining the confidence to meet her favorite K-Pop band face-to-face. Salaried workers, and children, get a day off of work and school so that they can spend the day together. The holiday dates back to the 1920’s, when students wanted to “draw attention to their situation to improve their status.” A major supporter of the movement was Dr. Bang Jeong-Hwan, a children’s writer. Jeong-Hwan started using the word 어린이 (eorini) to mean “children,” thus the start of 어린이날 (eorininal). The holiday was first declared on May 1st, but was moved to May 5th in the 1970’s to avoid clashing with Labor Day.

The day is popular for parents to take their kids out and have a good time, whether it be to an amusement park, the zoo, or even on a picnic. Some families also take the day to go to a game, or a visit to the countryside. So long as everyone has fun, then the day is a success!

Brand new episodes are set to premiere Monday through Thursday at 9AM (ET/PT) during the month of May, with international launches on Nick Jr’s other channels later in the year.
