BBC Worldwide And CBeebies Renew "Hey Duggee" For Season Three

BBC Worldwide and CBeebies have commissioned a third season Hey Duggee, a award-winning preschool series that airs on Nick Jr. USA!

The 52-episode new series is expected to transmit on CBeebies in the UK in Autumn/Fall 2018 before rolling out to other global markets. Additional episodes from season two, including a Halloween special, are slated to air on CBeebies this fall, with more new episodes set to hit U.K. TV screens in spring 2018.

Season three will continue the story of a huggable dog named Duggee and The Squirrel Club, a place where kids can take part in activities, learn new skills and earn badges along the way. The series helps teach preschoolers about responsibility, teamwork and how to make good choices. Hey Duggee is produced by London-based animation production company Studio AKA and was created by senior director Grant Orchard.

It is a breakout hit for CBeebies in the UK, consistently ranking as a top three show on the channel. (Amazon Prime Video holds SVOD rights to the cartoon in the UK and Ireland.)

Henrietta Hurford-Jones, director of children’s content and executive producer of Hey Duggee for BBC Worldwide, said, “Hey Duggee has fast become a firm favorite with children and their parents across the globe and we are incredibly proud of that, so we’re very much looking forward to working with the incredibly talented Studio AKA to deliver another fantastic series of Hey Duggee.”

Jackie Edwards, the head of BBC children’s acquisitions, commented, “Hey Duggee is a smartly animated series that unleashes everyone’s sense of fun. We are delighted that Duggee and the Squirrels are coming back to CBeebies for a third series—A Woof!!”

Sue Goffe, managing director of Studio AKA and executive producer of Hey Duggee, added, “We couldn’t be more excited to continue to work with BBC Worldwide and CBeebies on another series of the much-loved Hey Duggee. We are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved, grateful and thankful to have such an extraordinary team of many talents, and we have some excellent new episodes up our sleeve, so stay tuned for another brilliant series!”

Hey Duggee premiered on Nick Jr., Nickelodeon USA's top-performing preschool channel, in July 2016. Following its success, Nickelodeon USA acquired season two in January 2017. At launch, the series was in Nick Jr.’s top five programmes, and is consistently a strong performer for the channel. It's currently unknown whether Nickelodeon USA will acquire the rights for Hey Duggee season three.

The show is also available in more than 150 territories including China, where it had a phenomenal start, already reaching 470 million subscribers on streaming platforms Tencent and iQIYI since launching on these sites in April and May. It also airs on France 5, ABC Kids in Australia and Cartoonito in Italy.

In an exclusive interview with Licensing.biz, BBC Worldwide's global brand director for pre-school, Harriet Newby Hill, talks about the global success of Hey Duggee, the brand’s popular toys and apps, its burgeoning social media following, and BBC Worldwide's future plans for Hey Duggee.
