A judge has allowed showrunner Dan Schneider to proceed with his defamation lawsuit over the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which delved into sexual misconduct at Nickelodeon.

Schneider, the creator of numerous Nickelodeon shows across two decades, including The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh, iCarly, and Victorious, called the documentary a “hit job,” saying it falsely suggested either that he was a sexual abuser or was aware that two sexual abusers had been hired on his shows.
In a ruling issued Friday (Nov. 22), Judge Ashfaq G. Chowdhury found that Schneider’s claims are not frivolous, and that a “reasonable viewer” might conclude that the documentary makes “damning implications about his conduct.”
The judge denied a motion filed by attorneys for Warner Bros. and Sony, which had sought to throw out the suit under the state anti-SLAPP statute, which bars litigation intended to chill speech on matters of public concern. They argued that the documentary did not actually accuse Schneider of sexual abuse.
Chowdhury wrote that Schneider’s lawyers had argued “persuasively that defamation can be implied, that the trailer and documentary state or imply Schneider sexually abused children who worked on his show and that Schneider was a child sexual abuser.”
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV was released in March on Investigation Discovery (ID) and Max. It drew on a 2022 Business Insider piece, which reported that Schneider engaged in volatile and bullying behavior on set, and that he created a “maddening, disgusting, controlling little bubble,” in the words of one former writer.
Some former staffers also complained of overly sexualized material, which they found inappropriate for young audiences.
Nickelodeon cut ties with Schneider in 2018 after an internal investigation into verbal abuse. The investigation found no evidence of sexual misconduct between Schneider and any child actors. Schneider has repeatedly denied many of the allegations, though he has also apologized for making people feel uncomfortable and for asking for neck massages on set.
The documentary delved into the cases of Brian Peck, a former dialogue coach on The Amanda Show, and Jason Handy, a former production assistant. Both were later prosecuted for child sex abuse.
In the lawsuit, Schneider alleged that the series juxtaposed him with both men, implying that he, too, is a sexual abuser or was in some way responsible for their conduct. Even without accusing Schneider of sexual abuse, the suit alleged that the show created a “defamatory implication.”
Attorneys for Warner Bros. and Sony, which distributed and produced the show, argued that Schneider was distorting what the documentary actually said, and that nowhere was Schneider accused of engaging in sexual abuse.
“The First Amendment prohibits stretching and extrapolating a broadcast’s content far beyond what was actually reported in order to find it untrue,” the attorneys wrote.
The judge initially indicated that he would side with the defense, finding that Schneider had failed to show that anything in the documentary was actually wrong.
“Plaintiff here did not submit any evidence as to the falsity of the alleged defamation,” the judge wrote in an earlier tentative ruling.
Schneider’s lawyers addressed the judge’s concern by submitting a declaration on Schneider’s behalf, in which the showrunner affirmed that he had “never sexually assaulted or sexually abused a child.”
“I have never done any of these horrific acts,” Schneider continued. “Any statement or implication that I did so is false, and I will testify at trial that any such statement or implication is false.”
That was sufficient for the judge to allow the litigation to proceed to the next phase.

Kenan Thompson had little to show for his Nickelodeon fame at the end of his years of work.
The actor appears in Demi Lovato's new documentary, Child Star. There, he talks to the fellow performer (who uses she/they pronouns) about the earliest years of their fame.
Speaking of the start of his career, Thompson, who starred in Nickelodeon shows such as All That and Kenan & Kel, along as in the Nickelodeon Movie Good Burger, explained, “That first commercial when they paid me, it was like $800. I was 12 and it might as well have been a million dollars."
Landing and keeping continuous work wasn't easy, however. As the two discussed rejection, Thompson admitted, "I really considered not wanting to act anymore if these are the kinds of things I had to go through."
"It was almost like I was forced to stay humble, if you will, because when I could have been at my most boisterous, ‘everybody knows my name’ kind of years, I didn’t want that because I didn’t want people to know I was struggling. It’s kind of the beautiful conundrum, the irony of life."

When the subject of finances came up, Thompson explained how due to a lack of laws protecting child performers in Florida, where he filmed with Nickelodeon, he was scammed out of a significant portion of his early earnings.
“My mom met this dude somewhere through the community — either like church or neighborhood s---, through a book club or something, who claimed to be a good kind of tax accountant, will get you out of your tax problems for the cheap," he recalled.
"He was basically a con artist and like ran away with my entire, my biggest earnings up until that point," Thompson revealed. "By the time that was discovered, that was toward the end of that Nickelodeon tenure and the end of the job-to-job existence I had up until that point, and it was devastating because I discovered it in front of others."

Thompson explained he was in the process of buying his first home in Atlanta when he discovered his accountant wasn't who he thought he was.
"He didn’t show up with the f------ check. I’m with the real estate people at the office waiting to sign this paperwork, and he doesn’t bring the check."
"It’s crazy going from rags to riches and back to rags," he added. "It’s a mother------.”
Thompson, now 46 and a father of two, has since gone on to continued success on Saturday Night Live, where he is currently the longest serving cast member, in addition to extensive acting work in TV and movies.

Carter and Cicin-Sain, based on Carter’s memoir Fools Rush In. The film tells a story of defiance amid the 1990s’ siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, focusing on a vibrant, underground community that used art and music to affect change; a community that garnered global attention by ultimately inspiring an American aid worker to reach out to the band U2 to help raise awareness of the devastating conflict. KISS THE FUTURE follows the band’s promise to perform a post-war concert, which came to fruition when U2 played to more than 45,000 local fans in a liberated city, and is a show that lives on as a joyous collective memory for the people of Sarajevo.

A Bloody Lucky Day is a new Korean thriller series follows Oh Taek (Lee Sung-min), a down-on-his-luck taxi driver having an uncharacteristic streak of good fortune when he agrees to drive a mysterious man named Geum Hyuk-soo (Yoo Yeon-seok) to a faraway city in exchange for an exorbitant fare. But when the passenger reveals himself to be a serial killer, confessing to grisly crimes in his past and murdering others on the highway, the taxi driver must play mind games to ensure his lucky streak doesn’t come to a deadly end. Based on the Webtoon A Day of Bad Luck by Aporia.

Starring Henry Golding, Brandon Soo Hoo, Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, and Michelle Yeoh, and based on the popular children’s book series of the same name by Laurence Yep, The Tiger’s Apprentice follows Chinese-American teenager Tom Lee (Soo Hoo), whose life changes forever when he discovers he is part of a long lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu (Golding), Tom trains to take on Loo (Yeoh), a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. To have a fighting chance against Loo, Tom must reunite all twelve Zodiac animal warriors and master his own newly discovered powers.

The Changemakers explores several topical issues including mental health, LGBTQ+ and transgender rights in the USA, the UK’s cost of living crisis, the link between systemic racism and maternal mortality, immigration and the environment - particularly access to clean water and overfishing. With episodes spanning the U.K., U.S., Ghana, Denmark, and Lithuania, each episode sees a ‘Changemaker’ partner with a community figure for two weeks to inspire, expand, and understand their situation. The Changemakers’ visit culminates in a public campaign to galvanize supporters and paint a lasting legacy for those fighting for positive change.

While in her best friend’s front yard, 15-year-old Kara Robinson was approached by a man who put a gun to her neck and forced her into his car. He would go on to take Kara to his apartment where he held her captive and sexually assaulted her for 18 hours. While he was asleep, Kara escaped the restraints and his apartment. Even though it was the middle of the night, Kara was able to lead the police back to the apartment’s exact location and identify her captor, a serial killer who was also responsible for at least three other unsolved homicides.

JUNE is a feature-length documentary about country singer/songwriter June Carter Cash. Directed by Emmy® Award-winner Kristen Vaurio (Going Clear: Scientology & The Prison of Belief), the documentary features rare and never-before-seen archival material that reveals the extraordinary life work of Carter Cash and her iconic entertainment career, alongside interviews with the monumental woman herself, as well as family, admirers, and friends including Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, and Willie Nelson.
Produced by Sandbox Productions, Sony Music Entertainment and Maxine Productions (a part of Sony Pictures Television), JUNE shines an important spotlight on the history of country music and the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre before diving into the complex life of the legendary June Carter Cash. The five-time Grammy® Award-winning singer, comedian, musician, actor and author has opened for Elvis, appeared onscreen with Robert Duvall and Jane Seymour and co-wrote one of the most recognizable country songs of all time, “Ring of Fire.” Perhaps at times overshadowed by her iconic husband Johnny Cash, she now takes center stage.
