'Arthur' Character Mr. Ratburn Comes Out as Being Homosexual, Gets Married in Season 22 Premiere

Here are two things you probably didn’t know: First, the animated children’s series Arthur is still on the air, entering its 22nd season on PBS Kids in the U.S.. Second, Arthur’s teacher — the well-read, well-dressed, well-liked Mr. Ratburn — is a homosexual.

The news comes out in Monday, May 13’s premiere, titled “Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone,” in which Arthur and his pals are shocked to discover that Mr. Ratburn is engaged — mostly because they refuse to accept that their teachers actually have lives outside of school. “When they go home, they sharpen pencils, eat kale and dream up homework assignments,” Buster insists. “They don’t even sleep! They just go into low-power mode and watch documentaries.”

This paranoia only grows when the gang spots Mr. Ratburn having lunch with an uptight woman (voiced by special guest star Jane Lynch, iCarly, Two and a Half Men, Glee), who tells Mr. Ratburn that he’s “too soft” and needs to “toughen up.” They decide that marrying her will make Mr. Ratburn miserable, which will then make his students miserable, so they set off to nip the nuptials in the bud. Little do they realize, the woman in question is actually Mr. Ratburn’s sister, who just wants the best for his big day.

Arthur and his gang of mostly recognizable animal friends show up to the wedding ready to object, but when they see who Mr. Ratburn is actually marrying — not to mention how happy the couple appears — they decide not to sabotage their teacher’s big day, after all. They do, however, make fun of the way Mr. Ratburn and his new husband dance, which is fair.

Mr. Ratburn’s partner doesn’t have any lines in the episode, he simply winks at the children as he walks by them going down the aisle with his third grade teacher husband. From the looks of him, he is an aardvark like the show’s titular hero.

The news that Mr. Ratburn is gay exploded social media, making the term 'Mr. Ratburn' trend on Twitter.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the Arthur-verse has featured a gay character. In 2005, PBS was forced to pull an episode of the Arthur spinoff Postcards from Buster in which Buster visited a family with lesbian mothers. Before it was to air, former education secretary under George W. Bush Margaret Spellings asked PBS to pull the episode for fear that children might be exposed to — gasp! — lesbians.

Arthur creator Marc Brown said he was “disappointed” by PBS’s decision to comply with Spellings’ request.

“What we are trying to do in the series is connect kids with other kids by reflecting their lives,” Brown said. “In some episodes, as in the Vermont one, we are validating children who are seldom validated. We believe that Postcards From Buster does this in a very natural way —and, as always, from the point of view of children."

For what it’s worth, the word “lesbian” wasn’t actually used in the episode, just as Mr. Ratburn doesn’t use the word “gay” in Monday’s Arthur premiere.

Some of you may be wondering why I'm posting about Arthur, as it's not a Nickelodeon show - it did, however, air on Nickelodeon UK (and CBBC) in the mid-nineties!

Arthur is the latest animated series to include a prominent LGBTQ character. In 2016, Nickelodeon made network history with their first-ever portrayal of a same-sex male couple on their animated series The Loud House. The show has also revealed that Lincoln's sister, Luna, and her crush, Sam, are bi-sexual. The series' positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters has earned it two GLAAD Media Awards nominations.

The network also featured a younger unmarried female same-sex couple in the 2014 conclusion of its hit animated action series The Legend of Korra, which ended with Korra and Asami, two of the shows female characters, embarking on a romantic relationship, with fans endearingly calling the couple 'Korrasami'. Korra and Asami's relationship continues in comic book sequels to the series, including the upcoming Ruins of the Empire.

Further back in the '90s, Nickelodeon's iconic animated series Hey Arnold!, one of Arnold's teachers, Mr. Simmons, was gay. Craig Bartlett, the creator of Hey Arnold!, has also hinted that Arnold's friend, Eugene Horowitz, was also gay.

Most recently, Nickelodeon's revived Double Dare featured it's first family with two dads. A major milestone.

These representations are big deal considering that Nickelodeon has millions of viewers around the world, and the network's TV shows and movies featuring LGBTQ+ characters is an important step forward for mainstream visibility and acceptance of same-sex couples among younger viewers.

Congrats to the happy couple! :)

Nickelodeon UK & Paramount Release 'Rocko's Modern Life: The Complete Series' DVD Set

UK - Fans of Nickelodeon’s beloved '90s animated series Rocko's Modern Life can now own the entire animated series with the brand-new "Rocko's Modern Life - Seasons 1-4" DVD set!

"Modern life got you down? Take a break from all the pesky neighbours, freeloading pals and hazardous household chores with Rocko’s Modern Life: The Complete Series! This 8-disc box set is a laundry basket overflowing with every single episode of one of Nickelodeon’s biggest animated series. Relive over 21 hours of laugh-out-loud, live-and-learn misadventures, including fan-favourite episodes “Carnival Knowledge”, “ Sand in Your Navel”, “To Heck and Back” and “Flu-In-U-Enza”. Plus, stick around for more loony life lessons, like when Rocko realises garbage day is a very dangerous day, Heffer rushes to the hospital after eating way too many pasture puffies, a fortune cookie tells Filburt bad luck will infest his pathetic soul for all eternity, and more!"

Rocko's Modern Life - Seasons 1-4 includes 8 discs featuring all 52 episodes from the shows four-season run.

The set looks like it's based on a Shout! Factory US release, as it features the edited versions of "The Good, The Bad and The Wallaby" and "Hut, Saw, Raw", which both got edited in the US, but have always remained uncut on the UK airings. However, a scene from "Put to Pasture" which was cut by Nickelodeon UK is available in all its glory on this release which is a bonus.

Unfortunately, it looks like the DVD set does not include any bonus features, such as the original pilot version of “Trash-O-Madness”, “Wacky Delly” Live 2012, and commentary by creator Joe Murray on select episodes, which will also feature on the Rocko’s Modern Life: The Complete Series DVD set which will be released this Thanksgiving in the US.

Weirdly, the DVD set also carries a 12 age certificate, which is odd, as its a cartoon aimed towards kids. This isn't unusual though, as a 2012 DVD release of The Secret World of Alex Mack carried a 15 age rating.

Produced by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, the region two DVD has a running time of 1319 minutes.

"Rocko's Modern Life - Seasons 1-4" is available in purchase on Amazon.co.uk, and will be available on online shops such as HMV and Zavvi from Monday 19th November 2018. The average price is £34.99 GBP.

All-in-all, "Rocko's Modern Life - Seasons 1-4" is a good deal, and is bound to get you in the mood for the upcoming TV movie, Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling! Reliving the crazy modern life antics of Rocko will sure to be a hoot!

Lucy Alexander Shares EPIC Nickelodeon UK Throwback Photo On Instagram

Homes Under the Hammer's Lucy Alexander recently shocked fans when she shared a photo from her days on Nickelodeon’s NickALive! for Throwback Thursday and gushed over her co-stars, calling them the “original crew”!

Lucy Alexander looked unrecognisable in a throwback picture shared on Instagram with her 14.2 million followers.

Former Homes Under The Hammer star told fans: “Throwback Thursday #Nickleodon #originalcrew.”

In the snap, Lucy beamed for the camera as she placed a tender arm on her co-stars shoulder.

Wearing a stripped jumper and black sweat pants, Lucy epitomised the classic 90’s fashion of that era.

The 47-year-old presenter, who got her start on a Burger King advertisement and who presented on NickALive! between 1994 and 1995, sported dark brown hair, a huge contrast to her now bleach blonde mane.

Lucy co-hosted the live segments inbetween shows with Rick Adams, Yiolanda Koppel, Mounya Khamlichi, Sarah Cawood, James Gilbey, Helen Chamberlain, and Bogey and Rude the Reindeer, first at the Trocadero Centre in the middle of London, and then at Rathbone Place just off Oxford Street in London's Fitzrovia district.

The sweet image seemed to bring back positive childhood memorises for many of her fans, with some sharing them in the comment section.

One person wrote: “I met you and had pictures taken with you outside the Trocadero studio when I was seven. I’m 33 this year and still vividly remember it!”

More NickSplat: Nickelodeon UK Timeline (1993-2003)!

Another said: “I remember all these presenters from when we watched hours and hours of Sister Sister.”

A third added: “God I remember that like yesterday.”

Even Celebrity Juice presenter Keith Lemon pitched in, writing: “I remember you back then.”

Lucy cheekily replied: “@keithlemon still waiting for my invite onto your show.”

The mother-of-two hosted BBC series Homes Under the Hammer for 13 years until she was replaced with Martel Maxwell in 2017.

“It’s with a huge heavy heart I’m stepping down, it’s not the outcome I wanted but to purse other work and a commercial deal I had to leave,” she tweeted in 2016.

The Presentators | Christmas Song | Vintage Nickelodeon UK Christmas Short From 2004 | NickSplat UK

Stefan, Dan and Brian sing us a lovely Christmas song full of holiday cheer in this festive The Presentators short!

The Presentators is a series of shorts created by Stefan Marjoram, Dan Lane and Wee Brian and produced by Aardman Animations for Nickelodeon UK and Nicktoons Network in the USA. The series of interstitial's aired on Nick and Nicktoons in the mid-noughties.

What happens when three anarchic cartoon characters are given the chance to front their own TV show on Nickelodeon? The Presentators provides the hilarious answers. Stefan, Brian and Dan, the heroes of Aardman’s award-winning short film "The Deadline", confront burning issues of the day such as whether aliens walk among us and the difference between a stick insect and a plain stick. Created, written and voiced by three of the company’s CG animators (who uncannily also go by the names of Stefan, Brian and Dan), the series combines the technical possibilities of computer graphics with the quirky characters and comedy for which Aardman is renowned.

Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK 2007 | 10th Anniversary | #TBT | NickSplat UK

Following 20 years of successful shows in the US, Nickelodeon's iconic orange blimp flew across the Atlantic breaking the slime barrier for the first ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK in October 2007!

Hosted by multi platinum-selling, superstar rockers McFly, Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards UK 2007 gave UK fans the chance to honour their favourite celebrities from the worlds of music, television, movies, sports and more.

Nickelodeon UK did what they do best: put the kids in control! Kids across the UK & Ireland could cast their votes for their favourite personalities on nick.co.uk the red button their TV remotes over the summer holidays. Leading up to the UK KCAs, Ed Petrie, Sy Thomas and Ugly Mark Felgate made sure the UK Kids’ Choice Awards had enough slime with Slime Across The UK and Slime Across Ireland, in which Ed and Sy managed the slime factory at Nickelodeon HQ in London, and Mark toured the UK & Ireland sliming fans.

Nickelodeon revealed the winners of the channels' iconic Blimp trophies at a hugely successful star-and-slime filled ceremony at ExCel London on Saturday 20th October 2007.

Millions of votes were cast across 16 Award categories, all of which were decided and voted for by the kids, including Best Band, Best Movie, Best Book, Best Burp, Best Reality TV Show, Best Sportsperson and a special environmental honour - the Greenie Award with Sky.

At Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards UK 2007, stars including Emma Watson, David Walliams, Shayne Ward, Holly Willoughby, Emma Roberts, Josh Peck and McFly all took part in the hilarious, sketch packed and slime filled show, which was sprinkled with a touch of the stateside sparkle that has made Nickelodeons Kids’ Choice Awards the most loved kids awards show in the USA for the past 20 years.

One lovely lady who took her sliming in very good humour was princess of TV presenting, Holly Willoughby. The usually glammed up Dancing on Ice host got gooey of her own accord by putting on her snorkel and diving into a 6ft tank of seriously slippery slime, inducting her into the Nickelodeon Hall of Slime. The fun factor continued to go through the roof as teen superstar Jamie Lynn Spears (Zoey 101) accepted a challenge from McFly to set the world record for the holding a note for the longest length of time and the boys themselves recruited went all out to thrash the record set for slinging the most slime at an event by this years’ US host Justin Timberlake …all in the name of good ole’ fashioned fun!

Harry Potter and The Simpsons both walked away triumphant, each picking up two awards. Teen screen sensation Emma Watson, the then 17-year-old British actress that plays Hermione Grainger in the Harry Potter cinematic triumph, picked up the gong for Best Movie Actress, whilst Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows - the seventh and final book in the globally successful literary series from JK Rowling - picked up the award for Best Book. The magical movies leading lady, Emma Watson was on hand to gracefully accept her award, without getting gooey with slime in the process.

Other guests including Big Brother 8’s Chanelle & Ziggy, Samanda and winner Brian Belo were not so lucky. The reality TV stars were both shamed and slimed as they walked on stage believing they had won an award, only to find out that they had been set up by the Slime Squad (Sy Thomas, Ugly Mark Felgate, and Laura Hamilton) so they could gunk them in goo and shower them in..well…slime!

Proving that The Simpsons legacy is still going strong, the TV show won Best Cartoon, and 18 years on from the first ever small screen episode, The Simpsons Movie racked up yet another award for Best Movie whilst High School Musical’s Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale picked up the awards for Best TV Actor and Best TV Actress respectively.

The smash hit Nickelodeon comedy series Drake & Josh picked up the award for Best TV Show, with Josh Peck himself collecting the prize and getting in on the action with his fellow Nickelodeon screen stars, teen sensations Claire Holt, Phoebe Tonkin and Cariba Heine from H20 - the UK’s number 1 rating drama series for kids and Emma Roberts, star of Unfabulous and the Nancy Drew movie.

Simon Cowell went head to head with himself and came out a winner after two of his shows – Britain’s Got Talent and X Factor - were nominated in the Best Reality Show category. However, family favourite X Factor came out on top, with past show winner and chart topper Shayne Ward collecting the gong on behalf of the show. Shayne also showed off some super smooth moves on stage whilst performing his smash hit single ‘No U Hang Up.’

Best Movie Actor award went to the legendary Johnny Depp, beating off competition from silver screen hunks Orlando Bloom, Daniel Radcliffe and, erm, Rowan Atkinson.

Masters of the ceremony, show hosts McFly didn’t go home empty handed either. They were named Best Band, ahead of Fall Out Boy, Girls Aloud and Sugababes. They proved themselves to be top class presenters but also amazing showmen as they did what they do best and performed live - opening the show with an electric performance of ‘Pinball Wizard’ and also treated the floor stomping arena audience of 2,500 people with a medley of their greatest hits.

Having already released two successful albums in America, Drake Bell (Drake & Josh) picked up another award, but this time for his solo music efforts, winning the gong for Best Male Singer. And with three albums and a stack of awards already under her belt, angst teen Avril Lavigne won Best Female Singer and MTV Hits Best Music Video.

Across the other categories, loveable Geordie lads and inseparable dynamic duo Ant & Dec picked up the Best TV Presenter accolade (well, it couldn’t go to just one of them!); David Beckham was crowned the king of sports, picking up the Best Sports Person award, Best Video Game went to Sims 2.

Nickelodeon’s role model of the year blimp, the I Wannabe award was scooped by Little Britain funny man and everyone’s favourite big kid at heart, BAFTA Award winner David Walliams, who is widely recognised for his charity work as well as for having the nation in stitches.

TV’s slimiest awards event put ‘green’ at the heart of the show, with the Greenie Award with Sky. This award put kids in control of pledging to make a series of small environmental changes that go a long way, such as recycling, turning off the tap, writing on both sides of their school papers, switching TV off from standby and walking or catching the bus instead of being driven around in cars. The most popular pledge was recycling - highlighting the waste recycling efforts of the Nickelodeon viewers. Screen starlet Emma Roberts collected the award and took the pledge herself to help raise awareness and encourage kids across the globe to help make the world a greener place. The Greenie Award with Sky is part of a much wider channel green initiative from Nickelodeon towards a greener planet.

Dance floor booty-shakers ‘Booty Luv’, and famous faces from British soaps Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and EastEnders also wowed the crowd during the live event.

The starriest, slimiest awards show on TV premiered on Nickelodeon UK on Saturday 27th October 2007 at 11am, on Sunday 28th October 2007 at 2pm on MTV Hits and on Saturday 3rd November 2007 at 9am on TMF.

The family television event of the year was watched by a record breaking 1.2 million multi-channel viewers and in excess of 3.3 million votes were cast by kids and teens in the UK and Ireland.

Nickelodeon UK's inaugural Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK was produced by Nickelodeon UK, together with the team behind MTV's European Music Awards (EMAs).

The intro to Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK 2007 features Nickelodeon's iconic orange blimp arriving on UK shores and flying past iconic British landmarks, such as the Blackpool Tower in Blackpool and The Angel of the North in Gateshead, before arriving in London, flying around famous London landmarks, including Palace of Westminster and Elizabeth Tower, home of Big Ben, The Gherkin, the London Eye, and St Paul's Cathedral, painting the town orange, projecting popular Nickelodeon characters around the city and filling the Thames with green Nickelodeon slime.

The design package for Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK 2007 - used on-air and off-air - was created by UK-based creative production studio Mainframe, who also created the graphics for Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards Germany 2007.

Following the success of the first-ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK, Nick hosted a second UK edition of Nickelodeon's iconic awards ceremony the following year, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK 2008 at ExCel London in September 2008.
