Sky and NOW Team Up with Dogs Trust to Launch Pop-Up Bonfire Night TV Channel for Anxious Pets

Sky and NOW Team Up with Dogs Trust to Launch Pop-Up Bonfire Night TV Channel for Anxious Pets

Sky and NOW Team Up with Dogs Trust to Launch Pop-Up Bonfire Night TV Channel for Anxious Pets

Thursday 24 October 2024

  • Nearly half of all pet dogs are affected by Bonfire Night displays*, with 45% of owners saying their dog is not calm when they can hear fireworks**
  • Sky and NOW have worked with Dogs Trust to carefully curate a programme of films for pets to enjoy with their owners
  • Veterinary surgeon and broadcaster Dr Scott Miller shares five tips on easing pet anxiety

With firework season fast approaching, Sky and NOW have teamed up with Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, to launch a dedicated pop-up TV channel designed to help our four-legged friends stay calm during the potentially stressful period.

The aptly named 'BonfireNight' channel will feature a range of soothing, funny and distracting movies specifically curated for dogs to enjoy with their owners, helping to ease anxiety triggered by loud noises. Found on Sky channel 310, it will air from 6am on November 1 until 6am on November 6, featuring hit movies perfect for owners and dogs alike. The collection of movies will also be available to watch on demand and with a NOW Cinema pass.

Sky and NOW’s extensive back catalogue of more than 1,000 films were whittled down with the help of Dogs Trust. The charity’s experts said feel-good, relaxing, and familiar content was a must-have, as it helps keep dogs’ owners calm, which in turn can help pooches relax too. Films that promote laughter and general positivity were essential, while anything with negatively-associated emotions and intense content were ruled out.

The final list of 21 includes blockbuster titles such as Barbie and Anyone But You – as well as comedy classics David Brent: Life on the Road and Step Brothers – which are guaranteed to put a smile on owners’ faces. Classic, familiar, flicks include the iconic E.T., the Bridget Jones trilogy and Shrek 1.

As a nod to our four-legged friends, Sky TV has added a brand-new voice command which will direct users straight to a dedicated page where they’ll be able to find all the movies from the Bonfire Night collection. Simply say “bark” into your Sky Glass or Sky Stream remote****.

Jamie Morris, Sky’s Director of Content Strategy & Performance, said: “As a dog lover myself, I know all too well how stressful Bonfire Night can be. That's why we wanted to create something supportive to help dogs and their owners. Working with the experts at Dogs Trust and using their deep understanding of canine behaviour, we’ve delved into Sky Cinema’s extensive back catalogue of movie hits to ensure pets and owners alike get real comfort and support.”

Jenna Kiddie, Head of Canine Behaviour at Dogs Trust says: "Firework season can be particularly stressful for dogs as the loud bangs and flashes can cause fear and anxiety. Around half the UK’s dogs are affected by fireworks in some way, and fear can develop even in dogs who previously haven’t shown signs of distress. Dogs respond to fireworks in a range of different ways, so it’s crucial to have a clear plan ahead of time to help your own dog cope.

“A calm, relaxed environment can make a big difference in helping your dog feel safe and supported during firework season, so owners should plan for a cosy night in with them. Close the curtains, turn on the TV, and if your dog does seem worried, it’s worth distracting them with a game or treats to keep their attention away from the noises outside. For more advice on preparing your dog for fireworks, visit the Dogs Trust website.”

This October, it’s PAW Patrol on a Stroll month and it’s time to go on a very special mission! Dogs Trust and Nick Jr. UK are asking families, nurseries, schools and all PAW Patrol lovers to rise to HERO status by going on sponsored walk for Dogs Trust. For more information, click here.

In partnership with PAW Patrol and Character.com, Dogs Trust is thrilled to offer an exclusive PAW Patrol clothing range of t-shirts, hoodies, outfits and jackets. The collection has everything your little heroes need to show off their love for their favourite pups, whilst taking part in PAW Patrol on a Stroll. Shop the PAWsome collection here.

In addition to creating the ‘BonfireNight’ pop-up movie channel, Sky and NOW are further helping pet owners with veterinary surgeon and broadcaster, Dr Scott Miller, providing expert tips on how to best ease anxiety during fireworks.

Dr Scott Miller’s Top Tips:

  • Stay upbeat: “Watch something cheerful on Sky and NOW’s new ‘BonfireNight’ channel to keep a positive vibe - your pet will take cues from your calm and happy energy, being much more relaxed as a result. Snuggle up on the sofa, close the curtains and dim lighting.”
  • Keep pets active: “Make sure your pets get plenty of exercise during the day. Take your dog for a walk or engage your cat in active play to help them relax later. This will help them deal with any noise - they may even sleep through it!”
  • Create a calm atmosphere: “In the evening, close curtains and blinds to block out flashes from fireworks, creating a soothing environment. Play some music or turn on the TV, distraction tactics are a great way to help your pets get through the evening.”
  • Set up a safe space: “Prepare a cosy, central spot with your pet's favourite items where they can retreat if they feel anxious. Make sure you check on them regularly and reassure them that it’s ok and will be over soon.”
  • Consider calming aids: “Consult your vet about calming products like diffusers or sprays to see how your pet responds during Bonfire Night. These can be bought in pet shops or online and are a comfort to some pets.”

Veterinary Surgeon and Broadcaster, Dr Scott Miller says: “With an acute sense of hearing, particularly at the higher frequencies, many of our furry friends do not appreciate fireworks. Occurring sporadically, suddenly and associated with flashes, bangs and vibrations, these celebratory light shows cause at least 50% of dogs and cats to suffer with anxiety. It is incredibly important for pet owners to consider the responses of their pets to fireworks before the season commences, changing their plans accordingly to support pets in remaining calm and safe. Keeping them well exercised during the day, preparing your internal environment to reduce the impact of the bangs and flashes by pulling curtains, considering calming aids while offering a safe space or ‘den’ and remaining calm and relaxed yourself are all key ingredients to a Bonfire Night that the entire family can enjoy.”

The news comes as research shows that nearly half of all pet dogs are affected by fireworks*, with 45% of owners saying their dog is not calm when they can hear them**. To help, one in three owners say they intend to seek guidance to assist with fireworks-related behaviour.***

When it comes to movies Sky Cinema steals the show with more of the latest blockbusters than anywhere else and an extensive catalogue of over 1,000 movies on demand. As a Sky Cinema customer, you can also get two free Vue cinema tickets every month, and all the great shows on Paramount+ at no extra cost. Find out more here. • Feel-good, relaxing content with bright colours, slow pacing, gentle music, and positive emotions.
  • Familiar content that the owner has enjoyed in the past, which can have a calming effect.

Must Avoids:

  • Intense or suspenseful content with sudden noises, loud dramatic music, or sound effects like gunshots, thunder, or fireworks.
  • Scenes that induce fear, anxiety, or anger in viewers.
  • Films with negative, emotional human sounds such as crying, screaming, or shouting.
  • Films with extensive visuals and/or sounds of other dogs or animals, as this can be a trigger for some dogs.

NOW TV Drops Prices and Adds Kids Content for Free in Major Streaming Shake-Up

NOW, the subscription over-the-top (OTT) internet television (IPTV) service operated from Sky, has revealed plans to cut costs and add more free content for viewers. Here are all the changes coming next month to your NOW app or set-top box.

NOW, formerly called NOW TV, has announced a major shake-up that will give some customers a cheaper monthly bill and more content to watch without paying anything extra. Revealing the news exclusively to Express.co.uk, NOW has confirmed that it's dropping the price of its Cinema Membership to £9.99 (was £11.99) and will be bundling the Kids selection of channels for free to all customers who pay for the Entertainment Membership.

That means those who subscribe to the Entertainment bundle can now get a bunch of extra shows including Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants and The Thundermans, Nick Jr.'s The Adventures of Paddington, Milkshake!'s Pip & Posy, and Sky Kids' Cook With Buddy (Oliver).

Unfortunately for sports fans, NOW is keeping prices the same for Sky Sports customers with a 24-hour Sports Membership now staying at £9.99 and month-long access costing £33.99.

There's more good news for existing customers as NOW is also adding some extra features to its optional "Boost" add-on. This extra service now lets you to stream shows and movies on more screens simultaneously (handy in busy homes with multiple TVs or smart devices) and beam footage to your TV in full HD resolution.

Starting next month, Boost will also get the addition of ad-free viewing when watching via on-demand, 5.1 Surround Sound and all sports channels will get a 50fps makeover for a silky smooth picture quality.

It's worth noting that new NOW customers will have to pay £5 for Boost rather than the current £3 a month, however, anyone who already subscribes won't be hit by this increase.

NOW is also giving all existing Entertainment members with a Kids Membership access to Boost without seeing anything added to their bill. Of course, if you want to drop your monthly outgoings, you can pay for a standard Entertainment subscription and get Kids shows for free. However, if you're happy paying the same, NOW will unlock the Boost features on your account (so you're essentially paying for Boost now that Kids is free).

There's plenty to like about these changes, but there are a couple of things to be aware of. Firstly, the standalone Kids pass is now being removed, so new customers will need to sign up to Entertainment to watch shows aimed at a younger audience.

NOW is also dropping the number of devices users can stream to simultaneously from two to one. If you want to watch a boxset on an iPad upstairs while younger members of the family watch one of their shows in the living room, that's no longer possible without paying for Boost.

If you use NOW, you'll get a message from the firm in the coming weeks explaining what the changes mean with the update coming into effect from July.

Speaking about the shake-up, a NOW spokesperson revealed to Express.co.uk: “At NOW, we constantly evaluate and invest in our content and product offering to meet the evolving needs of our members. Having recently relaunched our brand, we are continuing this transformation by taking the opportunity to simplify our membership options providing more value for our members.

"The new NOW offering will make it easier for members to access the world’s best entertainment, with the flexibility to choose the package that suits them, whilst avoiding price increases to the core content membership proposition.”

Virgin Media UK and NOW TV Ireland Offering Kids Channels for Free Amidst Coronavirus Outbreak

With schools being closed and kids being asked to stay at home in the wake of the COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) outbreak, British and Irish television providers are offering a raft of children's channels, including Nickelodeon, to customers at no extra cost.

British cable television provider Virgin Media is giving its customers the chance to watch Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network for free. As schools are closed across the UK, the popular kids channels will be available to watch with no additional subscription fee required. The channels are home to Henry Danger, The Thundermans, Victorious, Teen Titans Go and Apple & Onion to name a few.

Typically Virgin Media customers would have to add-on these channels and pay extra but for the foreseeable future it looks like families can make the most of the free kid’s channels until April 21.

The upgrade is available to customers on Virgin Media’s Player, Mixit (without Kids TV pick) and Maxit (without Kids TV pick) bundles at no extra cost.

Virgin Media has also given 2.7 million of its pay monthly mobile customers an additional 10 GB data and unlimited minutes at no extra cost, as well as permanently removing data caps for customers on its legacy broadband to help them stay connected.

To see the latest bundles available from Virgin Media go to the website here.

NOW TV Ireland, the Irish arm of the IPTV series from Sky, has announced they're giving away free three-month kids passes for the remainder of March. It's in a bid to help parents keep their kids entertained while they juggle work and home responsibilities. According to a survey commissioned by the Irish government, 52% of Irish adults are working from home. And with kids on a hiatus from school, many houses will be a little busier than normal. This may impact work productivity for those juggling their day job and their role as Mum or Dad.

The kids pass includes uninterrupted access to hundreds of episodes of ad-free children’s entertainment. It includes channels like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network plus a range of educational kid’s documentaries. The pass allows you to stream favourites such as SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House, Pokémon, Paw Patrol, Gruffalo, Peppa Pig and iCarly. Following the free period, the pass will cost €7.00 a month unless cancelled, so don’t forget to cancel your subscription after the three months if you don’t want to continue. The reason being, the pass renews automatically at €7 per month once your subscription is up.

To claim your free NOW TV Kids Pass, you'll need to follow the steps below:

- Head to www.nowtv.com/ie/wfh
- Click to redeem voucher (populates automatically)
- Continue to sign in or create an account
- Sit back & enjoy!

Head of NOW TV Ireland, Michael Forry said, 'NOW TV really wants to help out all the parents who might be finding it difficult to balance work and home duties at the moment.'

With the hundreds of shows available to stream on the NOW TV Kids Pass we hope to make life a little easier over the next few weeks.'

Additionally, British satellite television provider Sky is giving extra benefits to its customers amid the coronavirus outbreak, including free Sky Go Extra, so homes can watch Sky TV on three screens at once, films being launched on its platform at the same time as their original cinema release and Disney+ available to stream from this week (March 24).

While Amazon is offering a free trial on its Kids Unlimited service. It gives customers access to thousands of kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps and games.
