'Kamp Koral' Voice Cast on Diving Into a New Era of 'SpongeBob'

After more than two decades, Nickelodeon is expanding the SpongeBob SquarePants universe with a CG spinoff: Kamp Koral. Sub-titled SpongeBob's Under Years, the prequel show shines a light on the denizens of Bikini Bottom when they first met at summer camp as children. Longtime fans were naturally wary of the new project (created by late series creator Stephen Hillenburg), a sentiment that was also felt by the actors who have lent their voices to the franchise since the very beginning.

"If you've been doing it for 20 years, every new thing that they wanna do, you always go, ‘Geez, I don't know,'" Carolyn Lawrence, the voice of Sandy Cheeks, told SYFY WIRE during a Zoom conversation with the entire cast. "And every single time, it just takes your breath away how awesome it turns out."

"I loved it when I saw it, but I was like, ‘Do we really need to mix the peanut butter and the jelly in the same jar? Do we really need that? Do we need to have Goober Grape on this show?'" Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob himself, admits.

On the other side of the spectrum, there's palpable excitement for a new era of SpongeBob animation. Roger Bumpass, who voices the clarinet-loving Squidward Tentacles, describes Kamp Koral as "very refreshing." He continues: "It's also more nuance in the characters' expression and, of course, their textures as you mentioned. I'm seeing little subtleties of acting and delivery that we didn't really have when it was 2D hand-drawn. It's like seeing the characters again, even though we've done it for 20 years and it gives us a little more fleshing out of who these characters are and how they act."

"I always appreciate whenever the extremely creative people that write the storyboards have an opportunity to express their incredible creativity and their humor," Bill Fagerbakke, who plays Patrick Star, adds. "There's stuff they can do with CGI that is just really surprising and delightful. We've had ADR [Automated Dialogue Replacement] sessions on Kamp Koral where I just can't stop laughing at what they're doing with the characters' expressions."

As Bumpass states above, the embracing of modern CG technology opens the door for a lot more detail in character designs. Given that Sandy is a mammal living under the ocean, Kamp Koral gave the animators a chance to really show off the dichotomy between her and the maritime natives.

"Our show has always been so visual and it's neat seeing it in a new way. I just think it's a really cool [thing]. Like seeing Sandy's fur is amazing to me. Those little things are phenomenal," Lawrence says.

"Every flea," Kenny jokes.

"Now you can see Squidward's skin tags. It's really detailed," Bumpass adds.

And since this is a bona fide prequel, the cast had to consciously de-age the voices they've been doing for over 20 years. Well, everyone, except Clancy Brown, who voices Kamp Koral director, Mr. Krabs — a single father raising baby Pearl.

"It's pretty much in the writing. I say that as the only adult in both series," he says. Well, that's not entirely accurate. Mrs. Puff (Mary Jo Catlett) and Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) are also employees of the camp, serving as the arts and crafts teacher and resident cook, respectively.

"There was something with Squidward because he's kind of a teenager in Kamp Koral. I was trying to incorporate him with his voice cracking. I haven't really done it yet," Bumpass reveals, going on to provide an example of a hormonal Squidward that prompts Lawrence to declare: "Emo Squidward."

"Like Clancy said, a lot of it is in the writing," Kenny explains. "Obviously, they're written as kids, so you play that when you're performing the script. But there is some subtle stuff that all these guys do in their acting that I assume is conscious or maybe it's unconscious. But yeah, they go to a different, younger read on the characters. It's definitely there."

If anything else, Kamp Koral is certainly proof that you can teach an old, salty sea dog new tricks — an adage that applies to the cast and animators.

"A lot of the people that are working on [Kamp Koral] are the people that have always worked on the SpongeBob mothership TV series," Kenny says. "They didn't really know from CGI, so the same way that we're having to learn all this new stuff, a lot of our producers and artists had to re-educate themselves after working in the 2D realm for 20 years on SpongeBob.

"Now, they've had to reeducate themselves and rewrite their brains, so I think, like Roger said, that's kind of refreshing to be forced out of your comfort zone," he continues. "Initially, it's kind of scary and terrifying, but once you master something new, you feel good about it. It's nice to feel good about something."

Speaking with SYFY WIRE last year, the seasoned voiceover artist remarked that cartoons "seem to be the pandemic-proof area of the entertainment industry," an opinion he reiterates during our new interview. "Here we are in this new pandemic world where we're all having to learn new tricks," he adds. "All these old dogs are having to learn new tricks. We're all recording at home. I never even owned a microphone before; I like going to studios where the guy running the board actually knows what he's doing."

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years (Credit: Nickelodeon)

"I miss the studios because they had better food in their kitchens than I do," Bumpass says, half-jokingly.

As SYFY WIRE's short Zoom call winds down, the site asks the cast how the prequel series builds out the long-running SpongeBob mythos. The word "mythos" spurs Brown, a veteran of The Mandalorian's first season, to drop a cheeky Star Wars reference: "Kylo Ren has no place in Bikini Bottom. I'm gonna say that right now."

"It expands the universe. It expands everyone's experience of these characters," Bumpass continues. "Now you're given backstory — you see a little bit of the origins of how these characters go to be where they are in the classic version of our show. It's really just filling up that universe a little bit more and here again, I keep using the word refreshing to see this."

"It is fun that we can play characters for so many years and still find out new things about them," Lawrence says. "That's amazing, that we're still like, ‘Oh, she did that? Oh, that's why she does this? Oh, cool!'"

"Our job is the same," Kenny concludes. "No matter what the format of the show is or whatever the visual style of the show is, our job is to make those characters live and breathe vocally. You just gotta be the character and just do it. Be Mr. Krabs or be Squidward, which isn't as easy as it sounds. Really, our job has stayed the same, except for having to record it all from home when some of us are Luddite/technophobe/Amish cavemen."

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years debuts on Paramount+ this coming Thursday, March 4. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which ties directly into the new series, premieres the same day.

Nickelodeon Set to Adapt Gordon Korman's Hit Novel 'Ungifted' into TV Series

Nickelodeon is reportedly set to make a TV series based on Ungifted, the hit children's novel by New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman!

Nickelodeon picked the rights to the project up in 2020 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and should get into production soon. Mulberry Films, a film and television production company based in Los Angeles, California is set to co-produce.

The word “gifted” has never been applied to Donovan Curtis. It’s usually more like “don’t try this at home.” So when the troublemaker pulls a major prank at his middle school, he thinks he’s finally gone too far. But thanks to a mix-up, instead of getting in trouble, Donovan is sent to the Academy for Scholastic Distinction, a special program for gifted and talented students. It isn’t exactly what Donovan had intended, but there couldn’t be a more perfect hideout. That is, if he can fool his family, the teachers, the superintendent, and a school full of fellow students with IQs well above genius level.

Below is the official synopsis for Ungifted:

"From #1 New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman comes a hilarious and heartfelt novel in which one middle-school troublemaker accidentally moves into the gifted and talented program—and changes everything.

For fans of Louis Sachar and Jack Gantos, this funny and touching underdog story is a lovable and goofy adventure with robot fights, middle-school dances, live experiments, and statue-toppling pranks!

When Donovan Curtis pulls a major prank at his middle school, he thinks he’s finally gone too far. But thanks to a mix-up by one of the administrators, instead of getting in trouble, Donovan is sent to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction, a special program for gifted and talented students.

Although it wasn’t exactly what Donovan had intended, the ASD couldn’t be a more perfectly unexpected hideout for someone like him. But as the students and teachers of ASD grow to realize that Donovan may not be good at math or science (or just about anything), he shows that his gifts may be exactly what the ASD students never knew they needed."

First published in 2012, Korman followed up the success of Ungifted in 2018 with Supergifted, a funny and heartwarming sequel which cleverly sends up our preconceived ideas about intelligence, heroism, and popularity.

Nickelodeon previously partnered with Korman to produce Swindle, a made-for-television movie based on the author's hit book of the same name, which premiered in 2013. Korman's hit Macdonald Hall book series has also been into a series of made-for-TV movies, titled Bruno and Boots, which have aired on Nickelodeon channels internationally.

Every Cameo in 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run'

Sponge on the Run has arrived and the movie is filled with a diverse array of cameos, so here's a rundown of SpongeBob 3’s many celebrities.

As is always the case in the cinematic outings of Bikini Bottom's favorite denizen, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is filled with a diverse array of cameos. Long-awaited by fans of the iconic Nickelodeon animated series and luckily just as anarchically hilarious as its predecessors, SpongeBob’s third movie outing, Sponge on the Run, released on Netflix in some markets, such as the UK, in November 2020, ahead of a planned 2021 U.S PVoD/Paramount+ SVOD release.

Following 2004’s blockbuster success The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and 2015’s belated sequel Sponge Out of Water, Sponge on the Run tells the tale of how the titular character first met his pet snail, Gary, and later sees himself and Patrick undertake a daring rescue mission when new villain King Poseidon kidnaps Gary. King Poseidon is only one of many characters played by a famous actor, and as was the case with the two earlier SpongeBob movies, countless other celebrity cameos are dotted throughout the cast of Sponge on the Run.

The first film in the franchise introduced audiences to characters played by the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin, and Jeffrey Tambor, not to mention throwing in an unexpected performance from Baywatch’s own David Hasselhoff as himself. Meanwhile, the second movie Sponge Out of Water managed to up the ante even further by not only including some slick 3D animation but also boasting appearances from the likes of Antonio Banderas as the villainous Burger Beard and comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates as the Popsicle Twins. This meant that the bar was set pretty high for Sponge on the Run’s cameos, and luckily the third film didn’t disappoint, bringing not only a brand new all 3D animated look for the series but also the most impressive cast list yet.

Awkwafina As Otto

Originally an invention belonging to Mr. Krabs, Otto is a (theoretically) emotionless robot intended to streamline the firing process at SpongeBob's iconic workplace the Krusty Krab. Having no heart, the robot has no trouble canning employees, but Krabs soon runs out of use for Otto when the robot commandeers his office. The robot spends the rest of the movie acting as SpongeBob’s unlikely chauffeur, proving itself an unexpectedly proficient gambler, and fulfilling all manner of other bizarre roles throughout the action of Sponge on the Run. Of course, it shouldn’t be too big a surprise to see that Otto is a solid gambler, since the robot is played by Ocean’s 8 breakout star Awkwafina. Recently seen in Jumanji: The Next Level, former Internet sensation Awkwafina has appeared in plenty of animated efforts before this SpongeBob role, with parts on Netflix’s Tuca & Bertie, a guest spot on The Simpsons, and an appearance in The Angry Birds Movie 2 to her name. The actor also has her own show, Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, and has appeared in Crazy Rich Asians.

Keanu Reeves As Sage

A tumbleweed residing in Goner Gulch, Sage may be the most quintessentially SpongeBob character to appear in Sponge on the Run. A surreal, funny, and oddly existential invention, it helps that this sentient koan-spouting tumbleweed is played by the movie’s most quintessentially SpongeBob choice of cameo. None other than Neo himself Keanu Reeves appears in the role, fusing his twin passions for pseudo-philosophy (as seen in The Matrix), surfer dude wisdom (as seen as far back as Point Break), and goofy slacker comedy (as epitomized in the recent belated Bill & Ted sequel). Reeves’ cameo in Sponge on the Run pretty much encapsulates everything that has made the actor’s career so great. Well, not quite everything, since as a sentient tumbleweed he doesn’t get to do much Speed/John Wick-style action movie butt-kicking, but he does help guide Patrick and SpongeBob through defeating the Flesh-eating Cowboy Pirate Zombies (more on them later), so it’s close enough.

Snoop Dogg As The Gambler

One of the earliest confirmed cameos in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, rapper/actor Snoop Dogg appears as The Gambler in the movie and is seen performing at a Bikini Bottom club. It's a surreal surprise to see the Murder Was The Case hitmaker visiting SpongeBob's neck of the woods. It’s still always good to see the West Coast rapper getting work in his later years. Snoop is actually a bit of a Nickelodeon alum, having appeared in Sanjay and Craig and Game Shakers. He is also currently the face of Just Eat in the UK.

Danny Trejo As El Diablo

In an unusually dark turn for the typically fairly light-hearted SpongeBob franchise, Con Air star Danny Trejo plays one of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run’s villains El Diablo, the leader of the Flesh-eating Cowboy Pirate Zombies. Despite their fearsome moniker and appearance, the movie’s heroes SpongeBob and Patrick make short work of the villain and his cohorts, even if Trejo’s leader does briefly return in the form of a tornado before giving up and dying for good by the movie’s end (although the jury is still out on whether a zombie pirate can really die for good). Like Snoop Dogg, Trejo is mostly a veteran of more grown-up entertainment. However, appearing in A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas does prove that the actor is a fan of goofy slacker antics and buddy comedy adventures. He also voiced Boots the Monkey in Nickelodeon Movies Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

Tiffany Haddish As Tiffany Haddock

A Master of Ceremonies for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run’s chaotic action, "Tiffany Haddock" is a (perfect for-a-pun) cameo role for rising star Tiffany Haddish of Girls Trip and Night School fame. Haddish is no stranger to the world of animated kids comedy, with a (seemingly) villainous role in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and a more recent appearance in Phineas & Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe to her name. It’s a choice role and one Haddish nails, making her rapid rise to comedy superstardom in recent years all the more exciting.

Matt Berry As King Poseidon

Another veteran of animated comedy like Haddish, British comedian Berry appeared Doctor Roberts, the father of Princess in Harvey Beaks and Prince Merkimer on Netflix’s fantasy comedy Disenchantment. The character is a familiar face from decades of cult comedy in his homeland, such as The I.T. Crowd, and he even appeared in a smaller role in 2015’s SpongeBob sequel Sponge Out of Water. There he played Bubbles, but this time around the actor has gotten the plum role of King Poseidon, the movie’s main antagonist, It’s a big promotion for Berry, and fortunately, the actor puts in a typically stellar, theatrical turn in the role.

Reggie Watts As Chancellor

Last but never least is Reggie Watts as the barely-seen Chancellor. An American cult comedian best known for his years of work on the comedy podcast and IFC series Comedy Bang Bang, Reggie Watts plays the briefly-seen Chancellor, a chain-adorned, graduation-hatted minor character in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. It may be small role, but fans are sure to be pleased to see that Watts is getting more work in the mainstream.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is now available to stream on Netflix globally, excluding the U.S., Canada and China.

In the U.S., The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will debut on Paramount+ early next year. In Canada, the movie will debut on Netflix at a later date. A release for China has not yet been announced.

2KBaby Proves Himself to be a ‘SpongeBob’ Trivia Master in a New ‘Rapid Fire’ Video

In a way, SpongeBob SquarePants is a show with its foundation built on trivia. The very first episode starts with the iconic theme song, which opens by asking a question the show has asked hundreds of times since its 1999 debut: “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” The answer to that one is easy (SpongeBob SquarePants!), but 2KBaby has proven that his SpongeBob knowledge goes well beyond the basics like that.

Uproxx and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run are teaming up to present “Rapid Fire,” in which the rapper has a progressively decreasing amount of time to answer questions about the show. The first question was the aforementioned one, which 2KBaby obviously nails. From there, he only gets stumped a couple of times, like when he misattributed a Patrick Star quote to Sandy Cheeks. In his defence, though, the line in question was an uncharacteristically intelligent-sounding one from Patrick, and since Sandy has flexed her smarts by doing things like launching a rocket to the moon and outwitting an Alaskan bull worm, 2KBaby’s mistake is an understandable one.

He also answered some questions about Sponge On The Run, the latest SpongeBob movie (which comes out on March 4 on Paramount+). In the film, which departs from the TV show in its 3D-animated visual style, SpongeBob tries to reunite with Gary after his beloved pet snail was kidnapped.

Watch 2KBaby answer SpongeBob trivia above and play along to see who between you and the rapper has a deeper understanding of Bikini Bottom and its inhabitants.
