'Stranger Things' Creators Matt and Ross Duffer In Talks With Paramount For Massive Deal

Paramount continues to make waves with splashy deals following Skydance’s acquisition. Deadline is hearing that Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are in talks for a massive overall deal at the David Ellison-run media company. Details are still being worked out, and sources caution that things still could fall through, but it's understood that it would include both streaming and features with a big theatrical component, something the pair have not been able to get at their current home of more than a decade, Netflix.

A rep for Paramount declined comment when reached by Deadline.

The high-profile talent poaching would mark the first major move for Cindy Holland, Paramount’s Chair of Direct-to-Consumer, who, as Head of English-language original series at Netflix, championed Stranger Things. In fact, the Duffers would be reunited with two executives who were key to Netflix betting on them and their 1980s supernatural drama.

“Ted Sarandos, Cindy Holland, Brian Wright and Matt Thunell took a huge chance on us and our show — and forever changed our lives,” the Duffers said in 2019 when Stranger Things was renewed for a fourth season and they signed a big overall deal with the streamer.

Thunell is now President of Paramount TV Studios, whose focus will be developing and producing series for streaming.

Since the Skydance-Paramount Global merger closed last week, Paramount has made a $7.7 billion deal with the UFC and has landed the James Mangold and Timothée Chalamet package High Side, both in a competitive situation. At a press event this week, the new Paramount leadership expressed their univocal support for theatrical movies.

The news about the Duffers’ pending Paramount deal comes as Stranger Things is coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season on Netflix.

In 2022, the Duffers launched their production company, Upside Down Pictures, for film and television projects as part of a new overall deal with Netflix. They described Upside Down’s mission at the time as aiming to create the kind of stories that inspired them growing up — “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”

Under that pact, the Duffer brothers are executive producing new Netflix supernatural series The Boroughs, which stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman and Denis O’Hare. They also have been working on a Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85 animated series and a live-action Stranger Things spinoff series. Stranger Things extensions would be carved out of the Duffer brothers’ Paramount deal.

Stranger Things was the first Netflix original series to become a pop culture phenomenon and branch out beyond the platform with comics, Halloween costumes, toys (including a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover) and a presence at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights en route to becoming a merchandising juggernaut. Netflix and the Duffers also successfully expanded the franchise to the stage with the award-winning play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which has had successful runs both in the West End and on Broadway.

'South Park' Season 27, Episode Two Doubles On-Air Viewers

After its chart busting premiere episode, which encored last week and continues to rack up views on streaming, South Park Season 27’s second episode drew even more eyeballs to the Comedy Central broadcast premiere. The Wednesday, August 6 installment, “Got a Nut,” blasted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, ICE agents and JD Vance (and of course, Satan’s new paramour President Trump).

'South Park' Season 27, Episode 2 Still
South Park - "Got a Nut" [Comedy Central]

The second ep. pulled 838,000 viewers for its first airing, almost double the 430,000 who were the first to watch the July 23 season premiere. This makes the initial broadcast of “Got a Nut” the third-most-viewed in the past three seasons of South Park, after the March 2023 episode “Deep Learning,” which poked fun at AI text bot ChatGPT (1.04 million viewers), and the Season 25 premiere “Pajama Day” in February 2022 (844,000 viewers).

The ICE melting episode was the second biggest primetime show for adults 18-49 that night, pulling 455,000 pairs of eyeballs from the demo. The No. 1 slot went to Big Brother on CBS (800k+ viewers 18-49). The big turnout for South Park also helped lift numbers for Andy Samberg’s animated archaeologist comedy Digman!, which kept 264,000 viewers tuned in afterward.

The S27 premiere, “Sermon on the 'Mount,” caused huge buzz with its shipping of Donald Trump and South Park‘s Satan and some literally below the belt punches. The episode launched on Paramount+ the next day and racked up 5.9 million views in just three days through the platform and other delayed viewing.

Apple TV+ to Add Original 'Wonder Pets!' Series on August 15

Apple TV+ has announced that the entire 3-season, 62-episode library of Emmy Award-winning Wonder Pets!, from Josh Selig and Jennifer Oxley, will be available to stream from Friday, August 15!

Wonder Pets!
Wonder Pets!

Wonder Pets! chronicles the adventures of three funny, singing classroom pets: Linny the Guinea Pig (Sofie Zamchick), Ming-Ming Duckling (Danica Lee) and Turtle Tuck (Teala Dunn), who travel the world to rescue baby animals in need, using teamwork, compassion, and cleaver problem-solving to save animals in distress. Like real preschoolers, the Wonder Pets have no actual superpowers, but they work together as a team to overcome adversity and achieve great success, teaching young viewers the value of cooperation, empathy, and persistence along the way. Each episode features operatic-style singing and a gentle, encouraging tone designed especially for preschoolers.

The show was TV’s first mini-operetta for preschoolers and the first preschool series to feature an extensive lineup of Tony award-winning and nominated Broadway composers.

Celebrated for its music and heartwarming stories, the series was created by preschool animation hitmaker Josh Selig, and originally aired on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. from 2006-2016.

Wonder Pets! was produced by Selig’s Little Airplane Productions (S1-3), Snowflake Films NYC (S4), Kavaleer Productions (S4) and Nickelodeon Animation Studio/Nick Jr. Productions. Over its run, the show won four Daytime Emmy Awards (Music Direction & Composition [x2], Original Song – Children’s & Animation and Outstanding Performer [Eartha Kitt]), as well as a Creative Arts Emmy for Music Direction & Composition, alongside nominations for Outstanding Preschool Series, Preschool Animated Program, and Writing in a Children’s Series/Preschool Animated Program.

Wonder Pets: In the City
Wonder Pets: In the City

The full library of Wonder Pets! joins the first season of Wonder Pets: In the City, the original series featuring a new trio of heroes: Izzy the Guinea Pig, Tate the Snake and Zuri the Bunny. These heroic pets live in a kindergarten classroom in New York City, and travel all around the globe in their amazing “Jetcar” to rescue animals in musical, mini-opera-themed adventures. When the going gets tough, Izzy, Tate and Zuri always remember to combine their talents and abilities and work together to save the day — because together, there’s nothing they can’t do!

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation, Wonder Pets: In the City is developed by Emmy Award winner Jennifer Oxley, who serves as executive producer alongside Steve Altiere and Grammy and Emmy Award winner and co-executive produce Jeffrey Lesser.

This music-forward series also features Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, including Bobby Lopez, Jason Robert Brown, Tom Kitt, Matthew Sklar, Larry Hochman, and is accompanied by the FILMharmonic Orchestra.

Nickelodeon Releases 'Dora the Explorer' Pilot Intro to Celebrate Beloved Preschool Property's 25th Anniversary

Today (Aug. 14) marks the 25th anniversary of the debut of Nickelodeon's beloved preschool property, Dora the Explorer, and to celebrate, Nickelodeon's official Dora Instagram page has released the intro and theme song to the unaired pilot episode of Dora the Explorer!

'Dora the Explorer' Pilot Logo

Although the pilot episode of Dora the Explorer features many of the same designs and aspects that would eventually go on and feature in the show, there are a few notable differences, including Boots, who has a completely different design: he doesn't wear his iconic red boots and has a mostly yellow fur, instead of the mainly grey body he has in the series. The theme song and intro, although similar, have a few minor differences, too. The pilot also features fan favorite characters such as Backpack, Map, and of course, Swiper!

The Dora the Explorer pilot would eventually get remade into the episode "Beaches."
