Netflix has unveiled a brand-new image of the core trio Aang, Katara, and Sokka preparing for battle in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series!
Netflix has unveiled a new image from the streaming service's upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender. The upcoming show is a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated Nickelodeon series of the same name. Set in a world where gifted people can manipulate or "bend" one of the four elements, it follows a young Airbender named Aang (Gordon Cormier) who is the Avatar, a reincarnated being with the power to unite the elements. He embarks on a perilous adventure with siblings Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) to master the elements and stop the Fire Nation from conquering the world.
The image depicts a forest-set scene of the core trio preparing for battle. While Katara and Aang prepare to bend their respective elements water and air, Sokka raises his signature boomerang.
Although Sokka's face is turned away from the camera, this new image is one of the closest looks yet at the core trio since the Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer was released in November. Although there are a variety of important characters that will either join or oppose them on their quest, including the disgraced Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and his sister Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu), Aang, Katara, and Sokka are perhaps the most important overall. Their adventures will challenge and eventually strengthen their bond, so the actors bringing them to life are key to the show.
Netflix also released a new video featuring the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender:
Although all three stars are still young, each of them has held roles in prominent projects before appearing as part of the Avatar: The Last Airbender cast. This includes Kiawentiio who, in spite of only having six credits, has managed to appear in prominent television titles Anne with an E, Rutherford Falls, and Marvel's What If...?. Ousley has managed a similar feat with just five credits, appearing in Young Sheldon, 13 Reasons Why, and Apple TV+'s Physical.
Gordon Cormier, the titular star of Avatar: The Last Airbender, also has quite a bit of experience under his belt. After kicking off his career in holiday TV movies including A Christmas Miracle and Christmas Under the Stars, he went on to star in projects including the 2020 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand and the animated show Team Zenko Go. Thus, Cormier and both his co-stars are television veterans who could utilize their considerable experience to bring these three important characters to life.
The Avatar: The Last Airbender cast also includes Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, and Maria Zhang as Suki.
Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres February 22 on Netflix!
Star Trek: Prodigy is back, with season 1 now streaming on Netflix around the world. Season 2 is coming later this year and the showrunners are talking about how it wraps up and what could be next for the fan-favorite animated show.
Executive producers and co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman joined the latest episode of Virtual Trek Con to talk about Prodigy, starting with how the first season had a strong debut on Netflix showing up on Top 10 lists around the world. Kevin talked about how he and the crew feel about the relaunch on Netflix:
“We are so proud. We know how good it is. We all see it. Like everyone on our crew are like, ‘This is one of the best things we’ve got to animate on.’ Then it got cancelled and it was like, ‘What? That doesn’t make any sense.’ So now, it is such a relief. It’s so sweet, everyone is so happy.”
Apparently referring to the corporate tumult at Paramount, Dan Hageman said that in the end the move may benefit the series:
“I think it turned out for the best on Netflix. With what’s going at Paramount right now, I don’t know what’s going to happen over there.”
There has been rumors over the last month that Paramount may be up for sale, with Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly interested with merging with the company.
The brothers also talked about how the upcoming second season ends:
Dan: "The end of season 1 we think is great. End of season 2 is equally great. And it has this place where it feels like it wraps up…"
Kevin: "Not just wraps up season 2, but season 2 is like the second half of season 1."
Dan: "It really wraps everything you want out of seasons 1 and 2, but it really opens the door to what season 3 potentially could be. And whether that hits now, or in five years, or whenever the time is right, it’ll feel natural, which I’m really happy about."
Kevin: “Worst case scenario, we never get picked up again and [even if] there’s no more Star Trek: Prodigy ever, we feel like the end of season 2 is a really beautiful closing. It will feel complete. But what we do is there is a great little promise of something more to come.”
Work on season 2 is complete and both brothers said they don’t know when or how Netflix would decide to order another season. Dan quipped it all comes down to “the veil behind the curtain, the algorithm.” However, if there was to be more, it would not be for a while. Dan explained:
“If we get the call like ‘We want season 3,’ because we are animation it’s going to take minimum two years, more like three years.”
Kevin also noted how with work now complete on season 2, any order for more would require them to reassemble the team, but they can’t be sure everyone will be available:
“So many of our crew can’t wait to come back, but they might be locked into a new job.”

Much of the first season of Prodigy focused on Admiral Janeway’s search for her former first officer Chakotay. Kevin acknowledged that the first season was a “giant tease” for the pair with “all the good stuff” coming in season 2. The brothers were not going to give specific details on the nature of the relationship between Janeway and Chakotay, but they did tease elements of their reunion in season 2. Dan said it was his favorite episode of the season, sharing how others reacted to it:
“I remember watching it with [composer] Nami [Melumad] and she was blushing. She was like, ‘Oh my god!’
Kevin added: “Obviously there’s going to be a reunion of these two characters. When we recorded the reunion, Kate [Mulgrew] was recording and opposite was our voice recorder Brook [Chalmers] and he read Chakotay. And they read this scene together and Brook was just crying. And Kate was like, ‘That was really good.’ There’s great stuff ahead… I love what we do with Chakotay. It’s totally not what you are expecting. Robert [Beltran] is fantastic… I love what we do with them more than what I have seen them do in Voyager.”

Niki López, the co-creator of Nickelodeon's hit CG-animated preschool series Santiago of the Seas, has revealed that she's currently working on a brand new project for Nickelodeon!
Speaking to Peruvian publication Metro Puerto Rico, López revealed that the new concept is currently in its development stage, and will be about Caribbean mysticism. López also revealed that the project will be targeted towards older viewers instead of a preschool audience.
López also gave an update about Santiago of the Seas, revealing that a third season is still undergoing negotiations.
López, who was born in Hato Rey in Puerto Rico, spent much of her childhood in Bayamón, but part of her family resides in San Germán. On weekends, López traveled west to visit her relatives. On these “roadtrips” the young woman fed her imagination.
“Since I was little I always went on those journeys of the imagination but I always had these characters and these stories in my head. […] At that time we didn't have the distraction of a cell phone or an iPad, or anything like that. What I had as entertainment was my imagination and I went on those trips and, well, I drew it, because I had so many ideas that I wanted them to exist in some way,” she revealed.
Likewise, she assured that these imaginative trips have been the constant in her life; her passion for illustrating stories prevails.
López went on to explain that Santiago of the Seas was born because the Puerto Rican illustrator longed for the Caribbean soil.
"was like a letter of homesickness and affection for the island; my childhood and where I found that magic of being here. The nature, the beaches, walking the streets of Old San Juan." he said.
The show tells the stories of a pirate who wants to save his island "Encanto" and his home helps him do it with a little magic. Inspired by Cofresí and a magical world, Santiago of the Seas has so far ran for two seasons.
The show has been successful, and the impact it has had on children in the diaspora is extremely meaningful to López. Families tell her how the series has motivated their children to learn about their culture.
"One of them told me that their kids didn't want to speak Spanish, they weren't interested at all. They tried and tried; they put on Santiago and, well, you have a protagonist who is speaking Spanish sometimes and lives in Isla Encanto, he has a coqui in his hat. Suddenly, the kids are interested because they're seeing a version of their culture and their language, with someone who is a hero. They identify with that: 'Oh, can I be a hero, too?."
