Nickelodeon’s Kel Mitchell talks ‘Giving Tuesday,’ and the power of helping others
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Nickelodeon star Kel Mitchell is encouraging families to give back this holiday season as he partners once again with World Vision for Giving Tuesday.
Mitchell, known for his work on “All That,” “Kenan & Kel” and a number of Nickelodeon projects, said giving back has long been important to him… especially during the holidays.
“I love working with World Vision. They’re a great Christian humanitarian organization, and giving back is important to me,” he said. “We started working together way back during the pandemic, and I just love working with them.”
World Vision’s annual gift catalog offers more than 100 humanitarian gifts that support families in need, including clean water, emergency food, education programs and child sponsorships. Donors can give in honor of a loved one and send a personalized card describing how the gift will make a difference.
A single donation can go a long way, Mitchell said.
“A $100 donation could feed a family for days,” he said. “You can even purchase a goat, which helps a family get 16 cups of milk daily. My kids love that… they’re like, ‘Oh man, we purchased a goat for a family!’”
Mitchell said one of the most meaningful parts of the program is the personal connection.
“You can even know the family that you helped out, and they’ll give you the names of the people you helped,” he said. “It’s a great gift to do with your entire family during Christmas because it shows kids a way to give back.”
As the new year approaches, Mitchell is also celebrating new projects. His new show, Play It Forward, recently premiered on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. The series focuses on revamping school spaces for students in need: from gym equipment to classroom upgrades.
“It’s right in the vein of giving,” Mitchell said. “We go into schools and help remix everything for them… give them the right equipment and things that they need.”
Mitchell also appears in the newest season of Netflix’s Is It Cake?, which debuted Friday.
For those who want to give back but may not have room in their budget, Mitchell said small acts of kindness still matter.
“Be the reason somebody smiles today,” he said. “Compliment them, give them a hug, pray for someone, have a conversation. You never know what someone might be going through, and your positivity can change that.”
