Netflix's hit live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is gearing up to commence production on season three as season two wraps production. The announcement was made in a fun video made by the cast of the series.
Season one of the streamer's live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series debuted in February 2024, offering a darker and grittier take on the fantasy series, with epic battles and a much grander, more epic scope.
The series topped the streamer’s weekly viewership charts for several weeks running. In its debut week, the series managed to clock up an impressive 21.2 million views and 154.4 million hours watched. Netflix promptly renewed Avatar for a further two seasons, through to its natural conclusion in season three.
Season two started filming in September 2024, wrapping in May 2025, a little longer after it was initially scheduled to wrap. The series has now entered production on season three. The news was announced a fun behind-the-scenes video from the main cast passing around production crew caps saying "2" and "3". “We’re just getting started,” said star Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Ozai). Watch below as Gordon Cormier (Avatar Aang), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Miya Cech (Toph), Kiawentiio (Katara), Dallas Liu (Zuko), Elizabeth Yu (Azula), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Uncle Roh), Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Azai) make the shift from Season Two to Season Three as only they can:

While TUDUM says season three is now in production, technically, that’s not entirely true. Cameras are actually due to roll on Wednesday, June 25th, as recently cited in an updated production listing via the DGC. Codenamed "Diner Bear Season 3", cameras will begin rolling at the end of that month and currently run through to Friday, November 7th, 2025.
Ousley told Tudum last year that the cast began physical preparation for Season 2. “We’re in boot camp right now, so it’s like soccer-oriented movements, training with some weapons, the same kind of gym stuff. Cardio and learning.”
Meanwhile, Liu summed up simple plans to prep his body, adding, “I’m spending a lot more time stretching this season.”

What is Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 about?
“We’re looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in Season 2,” executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani told Tudum. “We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t. Mainly, we’re looking forward to seeing our gang all together again.”
The EPs are keeping details about Season 2 close to the vest, but they did tease that we will see more of the Earth Kingdom.
“There’s no war in Ba Sing Se,” they explain, referencing a line from the original animated series. “For the Gaang, fans can expect more brilliant plans from Sokka, even more masterful bending from Katara, Appa, and Momo to be as fluffy as ever, and Aang to learn a new bending form (or two).”
In general, Raisani and Boylan are excited about building on the strong foundation of Season 1. “We’re going to challenge our characters with more complex and nuanced obstacles as they navigate a more tactile world,” say Boylan and Raisani. “Just as the animated series matured and progressed, the live-action will also take these characters and worlds and grow them.”
But with a new season comes the opportunity for fresh faces.
What happened in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1?
A live-action reimagining of the acclaimed Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang, a young boy who’s the titular Avatar –– which means he’s the only one capable of mastering all four elements (air, water, fire, and earth). In Season 1, Aang wakes up after a 100-year slumber to discover he’s the only surviving airbender. The world is being threatened by the imperialistic Fire Nation, which wiped out every other airbender and is working to subjugate the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes. With the help of his newfound friends Katara, a waterbender, and her brother Sokka, Aang sets off on a journey to restore balance to this fractured world.
Aang and his companions achieve a Pyrrhic victory in the Season 1 finale. Sure, they were able to stop the Fire Nation — led by Prince Zuko, his uncle Iroh, and Commander Zhao (Ken Leung) — from destroying the Northern Water Tribe, but it was merely a distraction from the larger war. Miles away, Zuko’s sister, Princess Azula, conquered Omashu, one of the two Earth Kingdom cities that had managed to stave off the Fire Nation until now, and took King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar) prisoner. As if that wasn’t devastating enough, a mid-credit scene reveals that Sozin’s Comet, a rare cosmic event, is on the horizon, which can’t mean anything good for our heroes.
“I thought it was really clever of the writers to end Season 1 in that way, because you want to get a sense that the universe of the show is expanding with every season,” Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Zuko and Azula’s ruthless father, Fire Lord Ozai, told Tudum. “And they really did a good job of that with that cliff-hanger and also created a sense of urgency and time.”
“Always leave the audience wanting more,” Lee added. “I just had chills seeing Lizzy as Azula. You’ve got King Bumi in shackles, and it’s just like, ‘Oh, there’s so many cliff-hangers.’ I was like, ‘Oh, I want to shoot Season 2, 3 right now.’”
What is Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 about?
It’s a bit too early for Netflix to give up any details about the Season 3 plot, but if it follows Book 3, then it should conclude in epic fashion!
When will Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 and Season 3 premiere?
It is thought that season two will premiere on Netflix in 2026, however, season three is still a bit of a way off, and depending on how Netflix wants to rollout the remaining episodes, fans may have to wait until 2027.
