Nickelodeon Celebrates SpongeBob's Birthday with New Clip From 'Search for SquarePants'

It's SpongeBob SquarePants' birthday, and he's officially a BIG GUY!

Big Guy | The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants

To celebrate SpongeBob SquarePants' birthday, Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Animation today (July 14) treated fans to a special sneak peek from the Nickelodeon superstar's upcoming movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants!

In the short clip shared to the film's socials, which you can watch below, SpongeBob blows bubbles to spell out the phrase "BIG GUY," whilst Dr. Dre's "Next Episode," which features Snoop Dogg, among other artists. In the movie, SpongeBob sets out on an epic adventure to prove that he's a big guy.

In The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom friends set sail in their biggest, all-new, can’t miss cinematic event ever! Desperate to be a big guy, SpongeBob sets out to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs by following The Flying Dutchman – a mysterious swashbuckling ghost pirate – on a seafaring comedy-adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the deep sea, where no Sponge has gone before. The movie is set to sail into theaters on Friday, December 19th.

The cast includes Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), joined by George Lopez, Isis “Ice Spice” Gaston, Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola with Regina Hall, and Mark Hamill (The Flying Dutchman). Ice Spice will also contribute a song to the movie's soundtrack.

The SpongeBob feature film is directed by Derek Drymon (Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania), a longtime writer on the franchise. The screenplay is by Emmy winner Pam Brady (SmurfsRuby Gillman, Teenage Kraken#1 Happy Family USA) and Matt Lieberman (RumbleScoob! The Addams Family), from a story by SpongeBob veterans Marc Ceccarelli & Kaz and Pam Brady.

The film is produced by Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies in association with Domain Entertainment and MRC. Producers are Lisa Stewart, p.g.a., Pam Brady and Aaron Dem. Executive producers are Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro and Andrew Lary.

Although The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is still a bit away, fans can get their fill of SpongeBob on the big screen early by watching the brand new Smurfs movie, in theaters from Friday, July 18! The film will be accompanied by the dialogue-free SpongeBob short, "Order Up," which sees SpongeBob annoying Squidward by overusing the Krusty Krab's Order Up bell.

SpongeBob's official birthday has been contested ever since it was first revealed on his driver's license during a dream sequence in the 2000 SpongeBob episode "Sleepy Time" that he was born on July 14, 1986. However, Nickelodeon confirmed on social media in 2023 that July 14 is SpongeBob's official birthday. If his birth year is still canon, this would make SpongeBob 39 this year!
