'Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan' Canceled By Nickelodeon

Nickelodeon has opted not to proceed with a sixth season of its live-action comedy Tyler Perry‘s Young Dylan. The news comes days after the series’ Season 5 finale premiered on the network on Wednesday, April 30.

“After five incredible seasons of Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, we are officially wrapping production. We’re deeply proud of the entire cast and crew, as well as our amazing partners at Tyler Perry Studios, for the work they’ve created and the stories they’ve brought to life around this show,” Nickelodeon said in a statement.

The show produced a total of 85 episodes.

Young Dylan’s fate was revealed on Instagram by series regular, Carl Anthony Payne II, who directed the Season 5 finale.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get renewed for a 6th season 😕,” he wrote. “All things must come to an end. However I’m looking forward to what’s next and what the future holds! Thank you to Tyler Perry and everyone at TPS.”

Created and executive produced by Perry, Young Dylan marked the TV mogul’s expansion into other parts of Paramount beyond BET/BET+ where he continues to have a substantial portfolio. In fact, just today, BET+ announced that Divorced Sistas starring LeToya Luckett, a spinoff from Perry’s hit Sistas, will premiere June 9.

Like the other Perry series, Young Dylan was produced at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

Young Dylan followed a family whose world is turned upside down when their nephew, hip-hop mogul-in-training Dylan (Dylan Gilmer), moves in unannounced.

Season 5 followed Dylan and his cousin Rebecca (Celina Smith) as they tried to expand their fledgling hip-hop record label, while the whole Wilson family tried to deal with Dylan’s mogul dreams.

Accompanying Dylan in his quest for music greatness were his uncle Myles (Carl Anthony Payne II); aunt Yasmine (Mieko Hillman); grandmother Viola (Aloma Lesley Wright); cousins Rebecca (Smith) and Charlie (Hero Hunter); and Rebecca’s best friend Bethany (Jet Miller).

It's currently unknown whether NFL Slimetime, in which Dylan serves as a co-host alongside Nate Burleson, will return for a fifth season later this year.

Hunter will next be seen in Nickelodeon Studios' My Weird School, an all-new feature-length movie based on the book series by New York Times best-selling author Dan Gutman. The movie will follow middle school student A.J. (Hunter) as he finds himself joining forces with faculty and friends to save the world from an alien invasion. The film will stream day-and-date on Paramount+ and air on Nickelodeon channels around the world. Premiere details will be announced at a later date.

Tyler Perry's Young Dylan was produced by Angi Bones, Mark E. Swinton, Chip Hurd, Will Areu, Carmen K. Jones and Tony L. Strickland. Production for Nickelodeon was overseen by Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Brian Banks served as Nickelodeon's Executive in Charge of Production for the series.
