Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation’s Ramsey Naito on the Subway Grit That Inspired ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ and Sending ‘SpongeBob’ Beyond Bikini Bottom

It seemed like the end of the road for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Nickelodeon Movies Logo

The iconic kids franchise had inspired a half-dozen movies of various quality, with the live-action 2016 adventure Out of the Shadows suffering from the kind of withering reviews and bad box office returns that derail a film series.

But Paramount and Nickelodeon Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Robbins and Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation president Ramsey Naito had an offbeat idea for how they could make the Turtles cool again.

That involved tapping Seth Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg, the duo behind Superbad and This is the End, to give the characters an adolescent flair. It didn’t matter that the pair’s main experience with animation, the very R-rated Sausage Party, was made for moviegoers of voting age and not for the pre-teens who are the biggest fans of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael.

“It was all about figuring out who is the coolest person we can get to bring something different to it, so it just didn’t seem like an imitation of what had come before?” Naito told Variety. “We needed someone to push this franchise forward with multiple movies and shows. And instantly it was clear that was Seth Rogen.”

Robbins quickly called Rogen and discovered he was a fan of the show dating back to childhood. Before the two Paramount executives could get through their pitch to the comic, he was finishing their sentences and selling them on his plans for the series.

On Aug. 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem hits theaters, and the studio is so optimistic that it’s already developing a sequel and two seasons of a streaming spin-off show. But those are just a few of the projects that Naito, an Oscar-nominated producer of Boss Baby, has been cooking up since joining Nickelodeon in 2018. She took over at Paramount Animation three years later. In her roles, Naito has been breathing new life into kids and family staples like Smurfs, as well as producing Transformers One, an animated spin-off of the live-action films.

Naito spoke to Variety about working with Rogen and Goldberg, her plans to expand the cuddly PAW Patrol cinematic universe and the challenges of making animated movies that appeal to kids, as well as their parents.

You were at Nickelodeon in the 1990s. Why did you decide to return?

I’d been working in animation for a long time, and when I heard Brian was going back to Nickelodeon, I was so excited because he was one of the creators who really helped define the brand. When he asked me to join him, I jumped at the chance. When we started, we were in production on roughly nine animated projects. Cut to today and we’re in production on nearly 70 across streaming, movies, and TV. Brian told me to focus on making Nickelodeon a world class studio where we can tell great stories and be the home of the best talent. And that’s been my guiding light.

Seth Rogen said that he was worried the design of the Turtles would be too radical and edgy. Were there similar concerns at Paramount and Nickelodeon?

No. We felt like the roots of the Turtles had this essence of subway grit and graffiti that you used to really see in New York. And we wanted some of that teenage testosterone — that sort of skateboarding flair. We wanted to pay tribute to the original comic book. But one of the early references on the film was one of those teenage doodles that people used to do in class back in the days where you took notes in three-hole binders. People don’t really use those anymore, but older folks know what I’m talking about. Ultimately, what Seth and Evan and [director] Jeff Rowe have created is an animated masterpiece.

When it comes to building a franchise, how do you balance the need to keep making sequels with the potential that if you do too many shows or movies, the audience will become exhausted?

It’s different for each title, but we are generally trying to stagger theatrical installments, so they come out 18 months to two years apart. Then we’ll have digital and TV series serving as bridges between movies, so these characters remain in the zeitgeist. We know we have to be careful about the concepts we decide to embrace for theatrical and make sure they are big and juicy and that there’s hooks in them. That’s a huge challenge.

It’s something that we’re aware of with PAW Patrol, where we are planning multiple theatrical releases and spin-offs. And in the case of Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie where the pups have superpowers, we are leaning into different genres. We are leaning into taking out characters into new worlds. With these franchises we need to event-ize every new chapter.

Can you elaborate on Brian’s recent comment in [Variety's] cover story where he said “we’re not going to release an expensive original animated movie and just pray people will come”? Does that mean you are just going to make franchises?

We are absolutely committed to making original animated films and are in development on a handful of projects. Brian and I believe we are nothing without fresh voices, faces and narratives and it’s our responsibility to add new perspectives, modern characters, and vernacular to our culture of storytelling. Originals speak authentically to today’s audience, must be handled with care, and make their own mark in our legacy library… and hopefully stand the test of time. That said, we’re not a one-size-fits-all kind of studio and our budgets are designed to support the scope of our storytelling.

What types of animated movies are working theatrically?

We want to appeal to moms and dads and kids all at the same time, and often that means focusing on the comedy. That’s what we did with Seth and Evan on Turtles or Chris Miller, who directed Puss in Boots and is now doing our Smurfs movie. We are trying to strum every cord. We are trying to attract older audiences who grew up with Turtles or SpongeBob, while also inviting in new ones.

One thing, I love about the slate at Paramount Animation is that we embrace a ‘no house style’ in the most authentic way. All of the movies we’re making look radically different. We work with different animation vendors on every single movie and that means that all of them look unique. So Turtles looks different than PAW Patrol or Transformers One, and all of those films look radically different than our Smurfs movie. It’s important for us as a studio to make films that express the creators’ visions.

What are your plans for SpongeBob SquarePants? Are you making more movies?

We’re developing more spinoffs and a series of movies for streamers, as well as a theatrical release, Search for SquarePants. The next one is going to be set in the deep sea, somewhere the series has never gone before. And the plan is that, like Avatar 2 or Wakanda Forever, we’re going to be immersed in this extraordinary underwater world. I think it’s going to be incredible to see.

Erik Burnham Discusses 'TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures' and Karai Spinoff

Erik Burnham sat down during SDCC 2023 to discuss TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures and an upcoming Ninja Turtles project.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fight off mousers in Saturday Morning Adventures

Writer and artist Erik Burham is no stranger to the world of comics. In recent years, he's received critical acclaim for his work on IDW Publishing's Ghostbusters series. He is also known for his work in the TMNT franchise and is currently the writer of one of IDW's most nostalgic series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures, which revives one of the earliest (and arguably most popular) eras of the beloved Heroes in a Half-Shell.

CBR spoke with Burnham at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, where the creator discussed his current work on the Saturday Morning Adventures series and why readers should be interested. He also took time to talk about his upcoming series that takes place in the mainstream Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe and focuses on an unlikely fan-favorite character in the franchise.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures

CBR: What can you tell us about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures?

Erik Burnham: Saturday Morning Adventures is based on the massive 1987 cartoon series that introduced the Ninja Turtles to the world. That's how I learned about them, and that's how a whole lot of people became familiar with them before comics became as ubiquitous as they are now. The series is the same brand of goofy fun that is three parts adventure to four parts humor and breaks the fourth wall with bad puns. It's just a good time that's suitable for all ages.

You seem to be very enthusiastic about this series.

You have no idea how much fun I'm having. My favorite part of my work day is when I get notes back from the editors or from Nickelodeon, and they highlight a pun that I've put into the script. And the note is, "Oh, God, why? Why would you do this?" But they don't tell me no, and they don't tell me to stop no matter how much they groan through the text, and I absolutely love that.

Which of the Ninja Turtles is your favorite to write, and why?

It started as Michelangelo and moved to Donatello in Saturday Morning Adventures. Now it's kind of evolved into Raphael because he gets to have most of the fourth-wall-breaking action. That turned into a replacement story in Issue #8, which revolved around him getting into trouble for breaking the fourth wall, and it's a lot of fun. So Raphael is definitely my favorite Ninja Turtle to write, at least when it comes to Saturday Morning Adventures.

I understand that you are working on an upcoming project that revolves around the fan-favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles villain Karai. What can you tell me about this new series?

The new series is called Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan, and the idea came about a year ago when the Ninja Turtle writers were having an online Zoom Summit about the Armageddon Game. It was mentioned that Karai was going to take over the Foot Clan, Shredder was going to be out of the picture, and she was going to start fresh in Japan. I suggested doing a story about a mission that occurs during the new status quo. At that point, ideas were coming in from everybody. It just kept getting bigger, and it was moving farther and farther away from my initial pitch. It's now become almost like an event mini-series, and it has been a blast to work on so far.

Several images of Karai in different costumes from Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan.

Will Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan be darker than your work on Saturday Morning Adventures?

I can't write anything without a little bit of humor and a few lighter moments, but Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan is 100% darker than Saturday Morning Adventures. It's a half shade darker than the regular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles book but a lot lighter than The Last Ronin. It leans a little toward the dark end of the spectrum, and people will die. Remember, Karai is technically a villain, so there will be some villainous stuff going on.

What kind of Ninja Turtles fans do you think will be most interested in Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan?

Hopefully, all of them, but specifically those who have been following the IDW title from the start. Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan grows out of that and is very much the same vibe and tone, so hopefully, it'll grab them. I'm trying to make it relatively accessible even though it does have a lot of connections to the Armageddon Game, Secret History of the Foot Clan, and the long history of the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title. Longtime fans will hopefully appreciate and enjoy Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan, but we're trying to make it appealing to new readers as well.

Images of the supporting cast of Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan

How is Karai's Foot Clan different from Shredder's?

I think part of what Karai wants to find out is how her Foot Clan can be different. She has always wanted to bring back the past, and we saw that when she resurrected Shredder. But instead of running the clan the way it was done in the past, he evolved. However, Karai didn't evolve quite as much, and this is about her evolution and finding out what the Foot Clan will be like under her rule. It might be more altruistic. It might be more mercenary. We'll all see as the story unfolds.

The fashion retailer has revealed that it will be ‘shell-ebrating’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem with the release of a limited edition adult leisurewear collection featuring everyone’s four favourite turtles and their favourite food, XXL pizza slices from Pizza Hut.

The six-piece leisurewear collection features nostalgic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles graphics alongside a retro Pizza Hut logo applied across tonal tees, super-soft hoodies, shorts, socks and bucket hats.

A second collection will drop in early November just in time for Christmas gifting.

Pizza Hut is also getting in on the action by launching a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-inspired pizza aptly named ‘The Big New Yorker.’ The pizza – as featured in the movie itself – is the biggest pizza available at Pizza Hut yet, coming in at a whopping 16 inches. The thin, crisp bottom crust is cut into six XXL, foldable New York style slices to give an authentic taste of NYC.

“We’ve always had a close link to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and are so excited to be launching this collaboration,” commented Hazell White, head of brand and innovation at Pizza Hut. “We love the nostalgic and retro nod in Primark’s limited-edition collection and can’t wait to see people wearing it. We love the collaboration so much that we have launched the same pizza in the movie in our stores at a budget-busting £13.99.”

Sarah Jackson, director of licensing at Primark, continued: “We are thrilled to partner with Pizza Hut and Paramount Consumer Products on the release of this limited edition adult leisurewear range. We are known for delivering unexpected collaborations and we think the nostalgic prints will really resonate with many of our customers who grew up watching Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo.”

The collection will launch with a special weekend long event at Primark’s flagship Birmingham store on 29-30 July, before landing in Primark stores globally from 31 July. The launch event will include sampling of Pizza Hut’s new ‘Big New Yorker’ thinner, foldable pizza, a DJ featuring music from the early 90’s Hip-Hop inspired movie soundtrack and experiential activities such as a virtual graffiti wall.

To take advantage of sharing a name with a pizza-eating mutated animal, just bring a form of ID with you, such as a passport, birth certificate or photo ID card.

Produced by Nickelodeon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayham tells the story of the four turtle brothers who go on a mission to be accepted as normal teenagers by New Yorkers through acts of heroism. The film is released in cinemas on July 31! Watch the trailer here!

Here’s What’s New In 'Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2'

A bigger roster, cross-play, and much more

Beloved characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and other enduring Nickelodeon shows will square off, platform-fighter style, in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 later this year. The sequel to Fair Play Labs and Ludosity’s 2021’s Super Smash Bros.-inspired fighting game promises to be bigger and better than its predecessor.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 will improve on the original game with voice acting for all of its characters, cross-play on all platforms, and a visual overhaul, according to publisher GameMill Entertainment. New characters Squidward Tentacles, Jimmy Neutron, and still-to-be-announced additions will further flesh out the roster. There’s something for solo players too: Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 will include a roguelike story campaign and a bunch of minigames to keep players busy.

For some insight into what else is new in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, Polygon spoke with Fair Play Labs studio director Diego Rodriguez via email. Read on for their conversation.

Polygon: Can you talk about what’s new here from a core gameplay perspective? What do you think will surprise players about the change from Brawl to Brawl 2, in terms of updated mechanics?

Rodriguez: This is actually a difficult question to answer because this is an entirely new game! We’ve changed almost every aspect of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 1 in small to big ways and we hope all of them come as a good surprise for players, but to list a few of the changes:

  • We’ve completely redone how movement works by changing to analog inputs compared to digital inputs from the first game, meaning things feel smoother and more responsive when moving around… which opens up a whole new world in terms of gameplay and strategy.
  • We’ve also added more options like horizontal attacks, defensive rolls and dodges.
  • We added something that is not very common to the platform fighters — a meter mechanic. This introduces a more in-depth system to the game in general. Using this meter you can modify attacks, do ultimates, boost damage, slime cancel and much more unique stuff!
  • Finally, something that stands out compared to the first game is the character design. On NASB 2 we put a lot of effort into making each character feel unique so we can cater to different types of gameplay.

Any favorite Supers you can share, just as a taste of what’s to come?

Honestly all of the Ultimate attacks are really cool. I really love Jimmy’s and April’s but my favorite is Zim just because I’m a HUGE Zim fan! Prepare for doom through the ultimate tool of destruction… minimoose!

I hope everyone looks at the move of their favorite characters and thinks, “Wow, that’s cool!”

What was your approach to selecting the roster this time? Any surprises you think fans won’t expect? Anyone NOT returning from the first Brawl?

This is probably one of the hardest decisions we made when we started to design the game — a lot of thought came into it. We looked a lot at the reaction on the roster of the first game, what were the more requested characters by the community and also what we can achieve with the vast list of amazing Nick characters, and of course we had Nick input as well.

There were a lot of options and possibilities, but we had to choose and we are very happy with the final roster.

Surprises? Yes! The funny thing is that from all the lists of possible characters the fans are making, none we have seen have guessed completely right. Just wait a bit and you will know who made it and who didn’t!

What’s your approach to implementing VO? Is it all original or do you sample from Nickelodeon shows?

All VO is recorded exclusively for the game. After the character is designed, animated and integrated, we write down the script for every character. This script includes all moves, general feelings, responses, reactions, campaign and single player lines. We try to use lines from the shows or lines that we think that character could say.

After our first pass of the script, a Nickelodeon writer double checks and adds more lines to the script, after Nickelodeon’s approval it goes into recording.

Can you talk about the roguelike elements of the single-player campaign? Anything you can compare it to so folks have an idea of what to expect?

I don’t think we can directly compare it to anything that is out there, at least not that I know of. Of course, if you are familiar with roguelike games, you will understand right away how the campaign works, but we made quite a few adaptations so it could work with the platform fighter mechanic, since first and foremost, this is a platform fighter.

I don’t want to spoil it too much, but basically we have a main storyline and you start with SpongeBob. As you progress, you unlock characters which you can use in the campaign, and each character has his/her unique story lines. The structure is the same on roguelike games — you progress through a series of battles, and if you lose, you keep some of your progress (characters unlocked, currencies, etc.) and use it to further your progress on your next try until you reach the end. And of course, in the middle we have cool opponents, bosses and other elements unique to the campaign.

One of the bigger complaints players had about NASB was the perceived value for the cost — would you say you’ve taken that to heart for NASB2? Is this a game you plan to support beyond the announced season pass?

Absolutely. We’ve put a lot of care into building a much bigger and more polished experience for NASB 2 and we hope players notice. There are quite a lot of changes and additions, for example: more costumes, better animations, better sound, VO at launch, better netcode, campaign, more gameplay modes, and more! But most of all we hope players have fun playing the game and feel they are getting a great value for it.

All I can say right now is that we are very excited about the season pass!

What were some of the bigger lessons learned in developing the first Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl — and in seeing players’ reactions to it?

There were a lot of lessons from the first game. I think the most important one was to have VO at launch, which we do have this time around. But overall, we learned a lot and tried to apply as much as we could to NASB 2 to make it a great game — down to small gameplay changes, crossplay and online, and how we approach single player content.

Players’ reactions to the first game was incredible. Seeing all the people hyped about the game and enjoying it so much on release was amazing. We are very happy with the reception and all the feedback we got on how to make the game better.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is slated to release later this year for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam). Find out more here!
