Thomas the Tank Engine Arrives on Cameo

ALL ABOARD!! - Mattel and Sir Topham Hatt have partnered with custom video site Cameo to sign Thomas the Tank Engine as a creator on the platform! Or an animated, AI version of him, at least.

Thomas & Friends has watched us all grow up for more than 75 years through books, tv series, and toys. Parents or relatives can now gift kids a custom message from Thomas himself for only $20 on Cameo. Not only is a message from Thomas a treat for your little one, seeing a personalized message from Thomas can also be a nostalgic treat for adult fans as well. Plus, with all of the shipping delays affecting holiday shopping this year, a virtual gift like this is an easy way to check someone off your list this year.

Consumers can customize Cameo messages with anything they’d like to say, whether that’s personalizing the messages for the holidays, celebrating birthdays, or other big milestones. Kids can keep their personalized messages from Thomas for as long as they’d like.

To make Thomas come alive, Cameo and Mattel use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to produce Thomas’s videos. Voice actors from the Thomas & Friends TV series worked with Mattel to create an extensive “language bank” to pull from, Arthur Leopold, Cameo’s chief business officer, explained to Marketing Brew. For instance, if someone orders a Thomas Cameo with the instructions “Please make a Cameo for my son John’s birthday,” the AI then takes the text request and converts it into a script using sounds from the language bank.

Content that makes someone stop the neverending social media scroll is even more valuable these days, according to Leopold. “Especially given everything that’s been happening with increased customer acquisition costs and privacy issues with Apple—and how that’s impacted so many advertisers—people want content that is going to quickly stop the scroll,” he said.

Leopold noted the brand’s advertising partners tell him Cameos are doing just that. “People see it in their feed and—because of the personalized nature of them, because of the User Generated Content (UGC) — they’re stopping and watching,” he said, adding that Cameos tend to convert at a “much higher percentage than traditional ad content,” though he did not provide exact figures.  Leopold also called these more scalable AI–based Cameos a “major revenue opportunity” for studios and IP holders.

Thomas is the second-ever animated character on Cameo, with Boss Baby arriving first. But Leopold told Marketing Brew that Cameo is excited about bringing more iconic characters onto the platform.

“We see a future where every major brand and studio has their IP on Cameo. So if it’s Mattel, they are the owners of Barbie, Skeletor, and American Girl dolls. Whether it’s Disney [or] Nickelodeon, they’ll have an incredible amount of animated IP that connects with kids every single day,” he said.

As for Thomas, Cameo was looking for a character that resonated well with both older and younger generations, as well as a major fan base that’s both nostalgic and current. His Cameos will live under the Family section of Cameo’s site.

Leopold explained that Mattel came to Cameo with the idea—they got connected via one of Cameo’s VC firms, Lightspeed, about six months ago, before Cameo had any animated characters.

But Cameo’s interest in Thomas actually stems from a deep love of public transportation demonstrated user interest in content for kids. According to Leopold, Cameo data shows a lot of parents are ordering birthday messages for their children from celebrities like Fiona the Hippo and Steve Burns from Blue's Clues. Leopold described Cameo’s content for kids as doing “exceptionally well” on the platform, though he did not share any specific figures.

A percentage of that $20 per Thomas Cameo goes to Mattel and to Cameo itself. Although Leopold declined to provide exact figures, he did say these AI–driven animated Cameos are an entirely new revenue stream for the business.

“This is just a hyper-scalable way of doing it because there’s no human interference. This being AI, you could do an unlimited amount of Cameos if you wanted to...whereas a human has to sit down and spend time thinking about the fan and do the Cameo.”

Both Mattel and Cameo are promoting the partnership, with Cameo specifically marketing it on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as on Cameo’s email distribution list. Influencer fans of Thomas the Tank Engine will receive Cameos from the train himself to run on social media.

To celebrate the launch of Thomas arriving on Cameo, Mattel is offering two new Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends toys to go along with a Thomas the Tank Engine holiday message this holiday season. The 2.5-feet-tall Trains & Cranes Super Tower playset has four levels of unloading and loading space for cargo and a track for steam engines to travel on. Kids ages 3 and up can use the handles and switches on the playset to keep all the work in order. The Race & Chase R/C features buddies Thomas and Percy connected by a steam cloud that kids can also use as a handle to easily pick up and play with anywhere. Conductors ages 2 and up can use the remote to race Thomas and Percy around.

The Thomas & Friends Trains & Cranes Super Tower playset is available for $99.99 and the Thomas & Friends Race & Chase R/C is available for $32.99 at select retailers.

Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, the latest series in the long-running franchise, premiered earlier this Fall in the U.S. and recently made its U.K. debut on Channel 5's preschool programming block, Milkshake! on November 8. The show will also air on Nick Jr. UK & Ireland and Nickelodeon Greece in the near future.

Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go features an entirely new storytelling approach, vibrant 2D animation, and a collection of fun new characters.

Awesome Inc. to Produce New 'Ren & Stimpy' Reboot for Comedy Central

New details have emerged about Comedy Central's upcoming The Ren & Stimpy Show reboot!

The reboot animated series is currently titled Ren & Stimpy and is being produced by Awesome, Inc., the Atlanta-based woman-owned and led animation studio behind Adult Swim favorites such as Squidbillies, Aqua Teen, Birdgirl, and Gemusetto.

Awesome Inc. is also currently staffing the series. Current open job positions include character designer and storyboard editor. To find out more, visit https://www.awesomeinc.com/careers.

Awesome, Inc. is also animating the upcoming Daria spin-off Jodie, also for Comedy Central. The series will star actor Tracee Ellis Ross voicing the titular character and serving as an executive producer along with Grace Nkenge Edwards who is the show creator.

The news follows Billy West revealing in September that he's set to reprise his iconic The Ren & Stimpy Show roles of Ren Hoeck and Stimpson J. Cat from for a new Ren & Stimpy reboot. In a Tweet, the voice actor revealed: "I’m reprising my roles of Ren & Stimpy for an all new reboot!".

The Ren & Stimpy Show premiered on August 11, 1991 as one of the original Nicktoons, alongside Rugrats and Doug. The cult Emmy-nominated animated series followed Ren, foul-tempered Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat. It aired for nearly 100 episodes over five seasons on Nickelodeon, ending in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV.

When the show launched, West voiced Stimpy, however, took over the voice of Ren after the show's creator, John Kricfalusi (who also voiced the character) was fired by Nickelodeon. In 2018, a BuzzFeed article accused the creator of sexually abusing teenage girls.

John K would go on to try and replicate the success of Ren & Stimpy without the restraint of a kid’s network, churning out Ren & Stimpy’s Adult Cartoon Party in 2003, but it turned out the censorship battles made the show what it was.

In August 2020, Comedy Central announced that it had commissioned a reimagening of Nickelodeon's  The Ren & Stimpy Show, 25 years after the Nicktoons' original run, as part of the network tapping into IP across ViacomCBS to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South Park. The Ren & Stimpy Show will join a Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie.

It will not, however, involve Kricfalusi, with the show's creator having no creative input into nor receiving any financial remuneration from the new series.

When the reboot was announced, it caused controversy. Robyn Byrd, who publicly accused Kricfalusi of having a relationship with her during the 1990s, launched a online petition to get the reboot scrapped, which garnered thousands of signatures.

In a sperate tweet, West also revealed that he "thinks" Bob Camp is involved with the reboot, along with The Ren & Stimpy Show animators Jim Gomez and Bill Wray.

Bob Camp was the co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing.

The Ren & Stimpy Show is available to stream on Paramount+. Try it FREE at ParamountPlus.com!

'Star Trek: Prodigy' Welcomes Aboard the Youngest Writer in Franchise's History

The recently renewed animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has promoted the youngest staff writer in the franchise's history.

Produced by the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and CBS Studios' Eye Animation Production, the CG-animated series Star Trek: Prodigy from Alex Kurtzman, whose intention with the series was to attract young fans to the franchise while creating content that appeals to legacy fans too, was recently renewed for a second season. Premiering with a one-hour episode on Thursday, October 28th, the motley crew of the U.S.S. Protostar is a smash hit amongst Paramount+ subscribers.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88 percent, and a premiere that had what the ViacomCBS streaming service is calling "the top-performing premiere day out of any original animated kids series on the service," it's no surprise that ahead of Prodigy's midseason finale, the show has been renewed for a 10-episode second season to debut sometime next year. To celebrate the announcement, the series creators took to social media to welcome new writers to Prodigy, and joining the behind-the-scenes Starfleet crew is the franchise's youngest staffed writer of all time, Keith Sweet.

On Twitter, show creators Dan and Kevin Hageman celebrated Prodigy's renewal announcement by welcoming new staff writers to the show, including Jennifer Muro, Erin McNamara, and Keith Sweet. The brothers tweeted, "With news of S2 renewal officially out, we want to welcome life-long Trek fan and one of our favorite people @jennifermuro to our Writers' Room. Also our S1 assistants @E_Mac777 and @TheKeithSweet have been promoted to Staff Writers! Thank you for making this show special."

Muro has a background in writing strong female characters, who empower women of all ages, for children's animation. The writer has contributed scripts for projects across fandoms focusing on strong female characters, just like the women in Prodigy, including Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Mickey and the Roadstar Racers, LEGO DC Super Hero Girls, and Disney XD's Spider-Man series. Muro is also the co-creator of the comic book hero Ashley Rayburn, having penned the graphic novel Primer from DC Comics.

In the Hageman brothers' tweet, it was also revealed that the season one writers' assistants Erin McNamara and Keith Sweet II were promoted to official staff writers on the series. McNamara is new to the industry, having only worked as an assistant on several other Hollywood productions, including Room 104 and Allegiance. Similarly, Sweet is a young writer and new addition to Prodigy's staff writers' team, having previously worked as an assistant for the series. Excitingly, with Sweet's hiring, this means that Prodigy has the youngest staffed Star Trek writer of all time.

Upon the announcement of the season two renewal, Sweet tweeted, "Baby's first writing gig Yah boy will be writing on Star Trek: Prodigy Season Two!!! This makes me the YOUNGEST STAFFED STAR TREK WRITER OF ALL TIME!! It's such a blessing and honor to be apart of 55+ years of story telling! We only going up from here."

As an up-and-coming writer, there isn't much information about Sweet's background online. However, back in 2019, the Hageman brothers first introduced us to the Prodigy writing team and production crew, including the two recently promoted assistants, McNamara and Sweet, as well the rest of the show's first season writers' room, which included Julie and Shawna Benson, former writers of DC Comics' Green Arrow and Batgirl & the Birds of Prey; Chad Quandt and Aaron Waltke, whose writing credits include Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and Unikitty; Lisa Boyd, whose major film writing credit is Black Sails; Diandra Pendle-Thompson, who previously worked as an assistant on Stranger Things and Star Trek: Picard season one; and Nikhil Jayaram, former writer on Shades of Blue.

In addition to introducing fans to the new staff writers, the Hageman brothers introduced the new writers' assistant for the second season of Prodigy, Alex Hanson, who worked as the script coordinator and social media advisor for the Star Trek: Prodigy Writer's Room during the first season of the series.

New episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy season one will continue to roll out weekly on Thursdays through November 18th. Following a just-announced midseason break, the second half the season will return starting on Thursday, January 6th, 2022. The Prodigy season one voice cast includes Kate Mulgrew as Hologram Kathryn Janeway, Brett Gray as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, John Noble as The Diviner, and Jimmi Simpson as Drednok. In addition to the series regulars, the animated show will also feature the voice talents of many guest stars, including Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Daveed Diggs as Tysess, Jameela Jamil as Asencia, and Jason Alexander as Noum.

One aspect of the show's success is down to its epic musical score, composed by Nami Melumad — the first female composer to score a Star Trek production.

Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Play Team Release Brand New Resources Starring Horrid Henry To Support Families

Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Play Team Release Brand New Resources Starring Horrid Henry To Support Families

The Charity’s digital Power of Play Hub is packed full of free inspiring ideas and fun activities to bring the incredible power of play to children and families across the UK.

London - 15 November 2021 - This November, GOSH Charity is adding extra resources to its Power of Play offering, including a brand new and exclusive short film from Novel Entertainment titled Horrid Henry and the Groovy Grandma.

The film was written by Novel Entertainment’s Co-Founder and Creative Director Lucinda Whiteley and directed by Gary Andrews, with music by Lester Barnes. George O'Shaughnessy, Oxford-based therapeutic arts and well-being facilitator, and Alex Bowie, socially engaged artist and School Programme Manager at Dulwich Picture Gallery consulted on the project.

More than a third of parents (37%) believe spending more time at home during the pandemic has helped them bond more with their children and feel closer as a family. However, almost a quarter of parents say their child worries about making friends (23%) and has struggled to maintain relationships with extended family with whom they have not been able to spend as much time over the course of the pandemic (23%). In addition, one in five parents (19%) report their child is currently worried about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which equates to roughly 1.1million children in Great Britain.

To understand the current impact of the pandemic on children, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) and YouGov polled 1017 British parents of children aged 18 and under across Great Britain, the research also reveals that 23 per cent of parents agree that their child’s confidence has been reduced by restrictions on where they could go and what they could do as a family during earlier lockdowns.

An effective way to build children’s confidence is through play. Play is led by the child and provides space in which they can freely choose how to be creative and to enjoy themselves. It also opens up opportunities to explore risk in a safe setting that helps build skills that are vital now and in the future. More than a third (37%) of parents agreed that a lack of time to play with family and friends during the pandemic has had a negative impact on their child.

During the pandemic many choices for children have been taken away for their safety and the safety of those around them, and the space and time to play has never been more important to protect. Play is a valuable way to boost children’s wellbeing, another is keeping in touch with loved ones and many families have turned to digital technology to help them maintain relationships with more distant family members and friends during the pandemic.

But for parents of younger children, struggles to build these important bonds are of particular concern, with almost a third (31% vs. 23% of all parents) of parents to children aged four and under indicating that challenges with maintaining relationships with family members they don’t see as much has been one of the top negative impacts of the pandemic on their child.

GOSH Charity is releasing the research as part of a campaign to share the “Power of Play” with families across the country, as “play” can help build children’s confidence and resilience to tackle day-to-day worries, such as concerns over making friends and missing loved ones, overcoming worries and anxieties, as well as helping families to bond and have fun together.

The Charity’s digital Power of Play Hub is packed full of free inspiring ideas and fun activities to bring the incredible power of play to children and families across the UK. This November, GOSH Charity is adding extra resources to its Power of Play offering, including a brand new and exclusive short film from Novel Entertainment titled Horrid Henry and the Groovy Grandma.

When Henry finds his Mum looking through her memory box, it leads to a conversation which not only helps them to express and understand their feelings about the loss of Henry’s grandmother but also to explore the power of play as a way of being together. Henry and his mum use a memory box, a technique GOSH’s play team use with patients and their siblings at the hospital to help children deal with loss.

Of the parents polled in the YouGov research, 1 in 10 (10%) parents of children aged between 5 – 11 say their child worries more about the death of older family members as one of the top negative impacts of the pandemic, which equates to roughly 560,000 children in Great Britain. GOSH Charity hopes this animation along with its other resources will support children affected by or worried about the loss of a loved one.

The Charity’s Power of Play resources are supported by Matt Lucas and Olivia Colman and have been specially created to share the expertise of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH)’s play specialists, who use play techniques to support seriously ill children at GOSH to deal with worries including isolation, loss, and anxiety.

Another new addition to the Power of Play Hub is an audio story from CBeebies stars JoJo & Gran Gran. They join stories, audiobooks and resources including Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Beano’s Dennis and Gnasher.

Danielle McCrossan, mum to five-year-old Jake who was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour in January 2020, agrees that missing out on time with friends has had an impact on her son. Jake spent time in isolation at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and at home recovering from his treatment. Danielle says “I know he misses playing with children his own age. Through our experience of working with the play team at GOSH, I now realise and appreciate the vital role play can have during difficult experiences, like being in hospital, or being stuck at home in lockdown,” says Danielle. “Even though it can be a dark time, play offers you some light, allows the child to express themselves and gives them the opportunity to be a child.”

Mandy Bryon, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Joint Specialty Lead for Psychological and Mental Health Services at Great Ormond Street Hospital says “Children are often resilient by their nature, and this is something we see time and time again at GOSH where we support children to adapt to medical treatments, operations and hospital stays. Our expert play team at GOSH, funded by GOSH Charity, are such an important part of creating an environment to build and maintain our patients’ resilience and sense of fun.

“The country’s children have faced many different challenges over the course of the pandemic, and we think it is important to share the expertise of our amazing play team with families across the UK to help make their day-to-day lives a little easier.”

Sian Spencer-Little, Deputy Head of Play at Great Ormond Street Hospital added “It is really positive to see many families have been able to bond more through additional time spent together, but we also recognise that many families had periods of separation as well and needed to explore different ways they were able to stay in touch. We know from our work at GOSH that play is such a powerful way to create connections, it really is a ‘superpower’ that helps children and young people cope with the changing world around them.

“Many children will have spent less time with loved ones due to important social distancing measures that help keep us all safe, and our Power of Play digital hub has a fantastic set of resources to help them make sense of this and other day-to-day worries. For children who are feeling less confident or unsure of themselves, or worried about whether Covid-19 or another illness might make someone they love poorly, I’d really encourage parents to explore and access our resources which include everything from creating memory boxes, to using glove puppets to explore building friendships, these really can make a difference.”

You can find expert tips and resources on the Power of Play hub – a learning and entertainment platform packed full of original stories, animations, ideas, and advice. Explore gosh.org/play

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc.  Total sample size was 4,367 adults, of which 1,017 were parents of children aged 18 and under. Fieldwork was undertaken between 29th October - 1st November 2021.  The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
