The Running Man, directed by visionary filmmaker Edgar Wright (Last Night in Soho, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Baby Driver), will be available to stream on Paramount+ this Tuesday, January 13. The film will be available in the U.S. and Canada, with additional international markets to be announced at a later date. For a free trial, visit ParamountPlus.com.
The dystopian sci-fi action film is based on the best-selling 1982 novel by of the same name penned by literary legend, Stephen King.
The Running Man takes place in a near-future, bleak world in which the United States is governed by an authoritarian media conglomerate. Glen Powell (Twisters, Hit Man, Top Gun: Maverick) portrays Ben Richards, a blacklisted laborer in desperate need of money for his daughter’s medication.
When the only option left is to participate in “The Running Man,” a popular TV program that follows contestants as they try to avoid being murdered in a nationwide manhunt with the hopes of winning the show’s billion-dollar prize, Ben must do whatever it takes to keep himself, and thus his daughter, alive.
In addition to an electric performance from Glen Powell, The Running Man is buttressed by a strong supporting cast including William H. Macy (Shameless, Fargo), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, Bodies Bodies Bodies), Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Superbad), and Emilia Jones (CODA, Locke & Key).
Daniel Ezra (All American, A Discovery of Witches), Jayme Lawson (Sinners, The Batman), Sean Hayes (Will & Grace, Grimm), Colman Domingo (Rustin, Sing Sing), and Josh Brolin (Avengers, Dune, Weapons) round out the cast.
The Running Man was rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for strong violence, some gore, and language. The film grossed $68.6 million at the global box office, with $37.8 million coming from domestic theaters and $30.8 million from international markets.
The Running Man joins a lengthy list of action films available on Paramount+, including Novocaine, Jack Reacher, and entries in the Gladiator, Top Gun, Transformers, and Mission: Impossible franchises.
THE RUNNING MAN is a fun, unhinged deadly game show where contestants must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Working class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is coerced into the competition by the show's ruthless producer (Josh Brolin). Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into a fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system.
