'Star Trek: Prodigy' May Not Be Returning For Season Three; Series Leaves Netflix

It appears that the epic journey of our favorite motley crew may have come to a halt.

'Star Trek: Prodigy' season two key art

Star Trek: Prodigy may have been canceled, with Paramount Global Content Distribution now listing the second season, which premiered on Netflix in July 2024, as the series' "final season".

'Star Trek: Prodigy' Series Information

Even more bad news is that the series is set to leave Netflix almost immediately.

It's understood that the series will be leaving Netflix in two parts, with each season leaving 18 months after they were initially licensed. That means at the moment, the two seasons will be leaving on the following timeline:

  • Season 1 will depart Netflix on June 24th, 2025
  • Season 2 will depart Netflix on January 1st, 2026

Of course, Netflix and Paramount could arrange to renew the license, and we’ll keep you posted if that happens. As it stands, though, your time to watch both seasons is running out.

Update (6/26): As expected, Netflix has now removed Star Trek: Prodigy season one from its streaming library, including in the U.K.

Update (1/11/26): Star Trek: Prodigy season two has now been removed from Netflix.

Speaking to TrekMovie.com upon the release of season 2 last summer, Dan and Kevin Hageman, the two creators of the show, were realistic about their expectations on a season 3 pickup. “We don’t know anything about season 3 yet. But what from what I see of Netflix when they do pick up shows for a season 3, which is very rare, it’s not about doing well, it has to do gangbusters,” said Kevin with Dan adding, “We’re happy with how we left things off at the end of the season 2. We feel like there’s a nice place to stop, but also a new adventure to pick up if we want to.”

They’re right, of course, and Star Trek: Prodigy didn’t make a significant impact when it did land. It missed the global weekly charts, and looking at the Netflix Engagement Reports, it didn’t catch fire. Per that report, covering viewing data from 2023 through 2024, the series picked up the equivalent of 3.4M views in total throughout that two-year period. For comparison, Blue Eye Samurai, which did get a rare animation renewal, picked up 20.5M views in the same period.

The last we heard from Kate about her return to Star Trek as Hologram Janeway and Admiral Janeway (which just garnered her an Emmy nomination, BTW), she was “furious” Netflix hadn’t picked up the show for a third season. When asked if she had any updates on the status of the highly regarded animated series, Mulgrew told TrekMovie, “I’ve heard not a thing.” In fact, she didn’t know the series had exited Netflix entirely at the end of December. Here is how she reacted to that news:

“Oh, is it lost now? So it’s somewhere floating. But this is the story of genius in Hollywood. Dan and Kevin Hageman are geniuses. Everybody knows that. And they created something that I think filled a deeply needed hole. The kids—the little kids, not the teenagers, not the young—the little kids, who are absorbent sponges when it comes to things like the Prime Directive, understanding that if I take your hand, we can do this better together. The very sound tenets of Star Trek. And she had such an eclectic crew. And I loved being the hologram and the captain and the admiral, and it’s just a shame. But of course, we could stand here all night complaining about why the good things went away.”

And the woman who commanded the USS Voyager for seven seasons said she isn’t happy about the idea that Prodigy would be Kathryn Janeway’s swan song with the franchise:

“That would be too bad, because they truncated it. They abbreviated it. They didn’t give it its head. They didn’t fulfill its promise. And whether they did it intentionally or not, or out of boredom or out of ennui, or out of too much content, or whatever they were thinking, in terms of Janeway’s legacy, it’s not the best way to go out is it? A cartoon that didn’t see its potential. It was great, but it wasn’t—it needs to get to the finish line. The whole legacy thing is… it’s truthful, but it’s also about ego.”

Developed by Emmy® Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters and Ninjago), along with Alex Kurtzman and his team at Secret Hideout, the Children's & Family Emmy® nominated CG-animated series Star Trek: Prodigy was the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences and follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future.

In season two, these six young outcasts who make up the Prodigy crew are assigned a new mission aboard the USS Voyager-A to rescue Captain Chakotay (voiced by Robert Beltran) and bring peace to Gwyn’s (voiced by Ella Purnell) home world. However, when their plan goes astray, it creates a time paradox that jeopardizes both their future and past.

Star Trek: Prodigy has had quite a rocky journey. Star Trek: Prodigy premiered on Paramount+ in 2021, and aired its first season over two years, with 10 episodes starting in fall 2021 and a second 10 late in 2022. The series made its linear TV debut on Nickelodeon in July 2022, with the first 10 episodes airing on the network. During this time, a second season of a further 20 episodes was ordered by Paramount+, however, the series was canceled by the streamer in June 2023, with season one removed from the service. In October 2023, Netflix acquired the rights to both season one and season two of Prodigy, with the first season being added on December 25 of that year, and season two premiering on the service on July 1, 2024. Both seasons have also been released on DVD and Blu-ray through Paramount Home Entertainment.

Following the debut of season two, fans launched a campaign to get Star Trek: Prodigy renewed for a third season, chartering a plane to fly around Netflix HQ. In the spirt of Star Trek, in addition to raising funds for the flight, organizers also used the opportunity to raise money for an ALS charity. The flight caught the attention of the cast and crew of Star Trek: Prodigy, who shared messages of support on X/Twitter.

The Star Trek: Prodigy voice cast includes Kate Mulgrew (Hologram Kathryn Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner) and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok).

Season two recurring voice cast members include Robert Beltran (Captain Chakotay), Robert Picardo (The Doctor), Jason Alexander (Doctor Noum), Daveed Diggs (Commander Tysess), Jameela Jamil (Ensign Asencia), Ronny Cox (Admiral Jellico) and Michaela Dietz (Maj’el).

Star Trek: Prodigy streams on Netflix and select countries (excluding Canada, Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belarus and Mainland China) and on SkyShowtime in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Central and Eastern Europe. Season two has launched in France on France Televisions channels and Okoo. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Master Replicas and Paramount Announce New Deal for 'Star Trek' Toys and Collectibles

Heathside Trading’s Master Replicas brand and Paramount Consumer Products have teamed up to develop a new line of Star Trek toys and collectibles inspired by the franchise.

'Star Trek' figures

Heathside Trading has announced that it has signed a wide-ranging deal with Paramount Consumer Products to produce Star Trek toys and collectibles, including action figures and play sets, replica phasers, communicators and tricorders, and other collectibles inspired by the franchise, all of which will be released through its Master Replicas brand.

“A new range of 4.5” action figures is going to be at the centre of what we’re doing,” said Master Replicas Creative director, Ben Robinson. “Our mission is to bring the fans items they have never had before. Our rights cover the new shows including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Section 31 and the forthcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. I’m delighted to say that we’re also going to be bringing fans the first ever 4.5” Star Trek: Lower Decks action figures and the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy starting with Rok-Tahk.”

“The figures will all be available from MasterReplicas.com,” added Ben. “By concentrating on direct-to-consumer sales, we can provide the fans with the kind of deep-dive figures and collectibles that would be challenging for a traditional business. Unlike other manufacturers, we’ll be releasing new figures every month, starting with Spock and Admiral Picard.

“As fans ourselves, attention to detail is incredibly important to us and we’ve been pouring over the reference material to make these some of the best figures anyone has ever seen. Every figure will come with accessories and we’re even planning some exclusive online variants that come with original fabric swatches from the Star Trek costume department. Our goal is to make products that fans thought they would never be able to buy, with all the love and attention that they have dreamed of.”

In 2025, the range will expand to include play sets, toy ships and landing party equipment.

Heathside can be contacted at sales@heathside.biz.

'Star Trek: Prodigy' Fans Send Another Plane To Netflix Asking For A Season 3 Renewal

Star Trek: Prodigy fans launched another airplane asking Netflix to renew the beloved animated series for season 3. Thanks in large part to Star Trek: Prodigy's dedicated fanbase, who rallied to save the show after it was canceled by Paramount+, Netflix became the new streaming home of Star Trek: Prodigy. All 40 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy seasons 1 and 2 are now on Netflix, with season one's first 20 episodes bowing on the service on December 25 last year, following by season two's next 20 episodes premiering on July 1st. Last year, a fan-funded airplane organized by UK-based Star Trek: Prodigy fan Michelle Stokes, is credited with helping convince Netflix to acquire Star Trek: Prodigy.

In hopes that Netflix will renew Star Trek: Prodigy for season 3, Michelle Stokes raised funds for a second airplane to fly over Netflix's Los Angeles headquarters with a banner announcing: "RENEW STAR TREK: PRODIGY! GO FAST!" Today's (August 23) flight is the third attempt to launch the plane, after delays canceled the original planned date of Thursday, August 15th and the rescheduled date of Thursday, August 22nd. To celebrate, Michelle Stokes shared photos and video footage on her official X page, @megsmamma:

In the spirt of Star Trek, in addition to raising funds for the flight, Stokes also used the opportunity to raise money for an ALS charity.

The flight caught the attention of the cast and crew of Star Trek: Prodigy, who shared messages of support on X:

"Warms the soul. Thanks you @megsmamma and every fan who supported. #StarTrekProdigy #GoFast," shared executive producers and co-creators Kevin and Dan Hageman.

"If there is one thing I have learned, it is the #StarTrekProdigy fans are passionate, dedicated, and incredible. Thank you for all the love and support. And for raising money to fight ALS, as well. Keep watching — spread the word to  check out our series on Netflix! 🖖" said co-executive producer Aaron J. Waltke.

Kate Mulgrew, who reprises her iconic role of Kahryn Janeway in the series, posted: "This is absolutely marvelous! No other fanbase IN THE WORLD can compare to #StarTrek fans. Thank you to Michele & all who donated ❤️ Proud to be continuing the #StarTrekProdigy journey on @netflix, now hoping to #SetACourseForSeason3 🙌🏻🛫" With a video currently circulating around social media of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talking to Steven Colbert about how Mulgrew's Star Trek: Voyager character inspired her whilst growing up, Mulgrew added: "And in light of other events...is @aoc flying that plane? 😉"

Star Trek: Prodigy fans also shared a photos and videos of the plane on X:
