Andy Paley, Veteran Musician and 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Composer, Passes Away Aged 72

Andy Paley, a veteran producer and musician who worked with a wide range of artists including Brian Wilson, the Ramones, Madonna, Jonathan Richman, Elton John, Deborah Harry, NRBQ and many others, sadly passed away on November 20, 2024 following a brief battle with cancer, a representative has confirmed to . He was 72. His death was announced by a representative, Bob Merlis.

Paley also worked extensively in film and television, composing scores and writing songs for such beloved animated series as SpongeBob SquarePantsRen & StimpyDigimon and others. Together with SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny, he co-wrote the iconic SpongeBob song "Best Day Ever".

He was described by Wilson as “the most frighteningly talented person that I’ve met and the greatest musical genius I’ve come across in many years… maybe my whole life.”

Most recently, he and Tom Kenny (picture, below right, with Paley) toured as Tom Kenny & the Hi-Seas, the16-piece rock and soul band.

A native of the Albany area of upstate New York, Paley began playing music even before his teen years, as a 7-year-old writing “The Porcupine Song,” which was recorded by children’s music performer Tom Glazer. He was a drummer for local bands before moving to Boston in the early ‘70s, where he formed Catfish Black. Soon renamed the Sidewinders, the band included future members of The Modern Lovers, including Jerry Harrison, who would go on to become a member of Talking Heads. They were joined by Billy Squier and relocated to New York where they played Max’s Kansas City and signed to RCA Records with Lenny Kaye producing. After the Sidewinders broke up, Paley played on sessions and performance dates with Elliott Murphy, Patti Smith and Jonathan Richman, for whose later recordings Paley would serve as producer.

With his younger brother Jonathan, he formed the popular power-pop combo the Paley Brothers, whose unusual milieu — they opened for both Patti Smith and Shaun Cassidy — may have played a role in their limited popularity. They recorded a single for Sire Records that produced by Jimmy Iovine (which preceded their 1978 debut album) and appeared in the Ramones’ film Rock ‘N’ Roll High School.

After the duo split, Paley became a staff producer at Sire Records, where he produced Brian Wilson’s eponymous 1988 solo album, co-writing several songs. In his later career, he worked extensively in film and TV music, including the soundtracks for Dick Tracy, A Walk on the Moon, Wild Orchid, A Rage in Harlem and the score for Showtime’s The L Word.

Tom Kenny commented, “My friendship with Andy and our collaboration — writing songs and my fronting the band that he formed —  is one of the greatest true joys I’ve ever experienced. He possessed not only encyclopedic knowledge of all pop music — especially rock ‘n’ roll and girl group — but was also astoundingly astute when it came to art and literature.”

In 2017, Paley collaborated with Victoria Meyer, an environmental scientist at Southern California’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, on a set of songs inspired by the ’60s French pop style known as yĆ©-yĆ©. Last year, he took part in a 50th-anniversary tribute to the influential “Nuggets” garage-rock compilation at Glendale’s Alex Theatre.

Paley’s survivors include his wife, Heather Crist Paley; their sons, Jackson and Charlie; his sisters Sarah, Brewster and Debby; and his brother.

As a producer, Paley didn’t have “a signature thing that I do,” he told The Los Angeles Times in 1990. “I just want the thing to sound good, whatever it takes. The main thing I can say about any project is to have a vision of what the ultimate product is going to be in your head. That end carries over into everything, even to questions like, ‘Should they order lunch now?’”

Paley is survived by his wife Heather Crist Paley, whom he married in 2010, and Jackson and Charlie – their twin sons who were born in 2012. He also leaves three sisters, Sarah, Brewster and Debby and brother Jonathan Paley.

Paramount Reportedly Cancels 'Ren & Stimpy' Reboot

Could Ren & Stimpy be about to make a comeback?

Ren & Stimpy

Bringing back animated series to the modern era has been a hot ticket item recently, with series such as RugratsAnimaniacsTiny Toon AdventuresPowerpuff Girls, and many others often brought back almost decades following their debuts. Now, it seems as though Nickelodeon's surreal duo, Ren & Stimpy, are set to receive their own animated reboot as a big update has found its way online as the original show celebrates its 34th anniversary. First premiering as one of the original Nicktoons, the series would oftentimes be as dark as it was hilarious.

The Ren & Stimpy Show first arrived on Nickelodeon on August 11, 1991, garnering five seasons and over fifty episodes to follow along with the crude protagonists. Following the series original end, the canine and feline were rebooted thanks to 2003's Ren And Stimpy: Adult Cartoon Party. This iteration offered a far more mature take on Stimpy and Ren, but failed to catch an audience that would see it live past its initial season on Spike TV.

Comedy Central announced that it had commissioned a reimagening of Nickelodeon's The Ren & Stimpy Show in August 2020, as part of the network tapping into IP across Paramount (then called ViacomCBS) to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South ParkThe Ren & Stimpy Show will join the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie, starring Tracee Ellis Ross.

"We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio," Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, shared in a statement back in 2020 when the news was first announced. "Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation, including South ParkBeavis and Butt-Head, and Clone High, as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations."

Original The Ren & Stimpy Show voice actor Billy West is returning for the English dub of the series.

It will not, however, involve John Kricfalusi, with the show's creator having no creative input into nor receiving any financial remuneration from the new series. Due to a leak of an episode, it has been revealed that Kricfalusi won't be mentioned in the credits.

The leak has revealed, however, that Vanessa Coffey, who helped create Nickelodeon's first three Nicktoons series - Rugrats, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and Doug - is back as an executive producer.

However, Bob Camp (who was initially planned to participate but left the project due to creative differences), is not involved.

Ren & Stimpy's return

The return of Ren and Stimpy has been a bit complicated, with hardly any news of the series being revealed since the reboot's initial announcement.

Then, last year, Comedy Central had planned to debut the series across its international feeds in July, ahead of a wider global rollout, including on Comedy Central USA, launching with the episode segments "Renhattan / Table for Human / Clear Toilet". However, the show was pulled from the schedules just before its planned launch.

Since then, nothing much has been said about the series, until now.

Paramount+, the streaming home for most of Paramount's shows and movies, has added a show page for the reboot, where it's titled Ren and Stimpy Show (2021), indicating that the show was originally meant to premiere in 2021.

Update (1/16/26): Animation veteran Bob Camp, who worked on the original series, has revealed that Comedy Central's Ren & Stimpy reboot has been canceled. Camp has also reportedly been told that a Garfield series in the works has also been canceled at Nickelodeon.

Paramount+'s show page for the Ren & Stimpy reboot doesn't currently feature any episodes, but does offer a synopsis of the series: "Oh Joy! This slapstick buddy comedy centers on a skinny, temperamental chihuahua Ren and his trusting feline sidekick, Stimpy. Together, this twisted twosome find themselves in crazy absurd adventures."

Whilst the addition of a Ren & Stimpy Show (2021) page doesn't necessarily confirm that the reboot is premiering soon, it is a sign that the show may be gearing up for a launch quite soon, whether its on linear TV (Comedy Central) or streaming (Paramount Plus).

‘Ren & Stimpy’ Artist and SpümcĆø Co-founder Jim Smith Passes Away, Age 70

Storyboard and Layout artist, character designer and musician Jim Smith (born James Carl Jobb) sadly passed away on Friday, May 2, of a heart attack at age 70. The animation veteran was perhaps best known for co-founding indie studio SpümcĆø with working partner John Kricfalusi, Bob Camp and Lynne Naylor and co-developing the influential Nickelodeon series The Ren & Stimpy Show in 1991. Smith also co-created Spumco’s follow-up show The Ripping Friends with Kricfalusi (2001-2002).

Spümcø co-founder and 'Ren & Stimpy' co-creator Jim Smith has died, age 70
Spümcø co-founder and 'Ren & Stimpy' co-creator Jim Smith has died, age 70

The Lubbock, Texas-born Smith began his career as a layout and storyboard artist in the early 1980s, working on shows such as The Real Ghostbusters, The Get-Along Gang, Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures and Beany and Cecil. He was also an animator on the famous 1986 Rolling Stone music video Harlem Shuffle, directed by Ralph Bakshi and Kricfalusi and layout artist on Bjork’s 1995 music video, I Miss You, also directed by Kricfalusi.

He worked as a storyboard artist on Bakshi’s feature Cool World (1990), Warner Bros.’ Tiny Toon Adventures (1991) and Batman: The Animated Series (1992). He was also a character designer and storyboard artist on Nickelodeon’s The Ren & Stimpy Show in the 1990s. In the 2000s, his storyboard credits include Oh Yeah! Cartoons, Ice AgeThe Oblongs, Poochini, Ren and Stimpy Rocks, Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon, Samurai Jack, The X’s, Tom and Jerry Tales, The Mighty B!, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, and Scooby-Doo: Legend of the Phantasaur.

Smith continued to work as a storyboard artist for Warner Bros. Animation’s The Looney Tunes Show and background artist on Cartoon Network’s acclaimed Over the Garden Wall miniseries.

Smith was also an accomplished musician: He played the guitar on the Ren & Stimpy theme song, alongside Scott Huml and Chris Reccardi.

In a 2007 interview, Smith said, “At first, my inspiration was Jack Kirby, a Marvel Comics artist. But as far as animation, it was always Chuck Jones and Tex Avery. I didn’t really start gettin’ into Clampett ’til I met John… when I came to California. There was never any good prints of Clampett cartoons on TV in Texas. They always just played Chuck Jones and Friz Freling cartoons. But when I met John he showed me all these really cool cartoons. He’d freeze frame them. They were great. I got heavily into Clampett after that. I was always into Disney before….Another real real big influence on me was Frank Frazetta. He was an oil painter who painted a lot of paperback covers in the sixties. He was kind of famous for painting Conan. I think he’s the greatest painter that ever lived. I discovered him at a time when I didn’t really want to be an artist… when I was heavily into my music. But I kept on getting those paperbacks of his and gradually came back around. And I decided to draw for a living!”

His friends and colleagues shared heartfelt remembrances of Smith on social media. Writer Richard Purcel (@dickp2000) who worked with Smith on several projects wrote: “Oh man, we’ve lost another one of my artistic heroes, Jim Smith. I met Jim working my first animation gig on Tiny Toon Adventures where he had already commanded respect as one of the best in the business. He studied classic film composition, taught life drawing. He was a mentor, patient, and humble. His skills were undeniable. Rest in Peace, Jim. You made the world a much better place.”

Spumco co-founder and Ren & Stimpy co-creator Bob Camp wrote:  “Happy Trails to Jim Smith, cartoonist and musician who has gone on to the big cartoon studio in the sky. He was one of the four original Spumco big-shots who co-created The Ren and Stimpy Show and the best draftsman of all of us.”
