Billboard on Broadway Podcast: The Pop Phenomenon 'SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical'
When it comes to presenting musicals both new and old on Broadway, it can sometimes feel as if every trick in the book has been tried. But now there's the new SpongeBob SquarePants musical, which, even by today's turn-traditional-theater-on-its-head standards, is free-thinking: the majority of the score has been written by stars from the world of pop music, including David Bowie, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, Panic! at the Disco, Lady Antebellum, and the Flaming Lips -- to name just a few. Even more surprising: that score has turned out not only coherent, but one of the most zanily enjoyable on Broadway right now, and SpongeBob is heading into June 10's Tony Awards tied with Mean Girls for the most nominations, with 12. In fact, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical is the most nominated Broadway show during the 2017-2018 theater season!
On this week's Billboard on Broadway podcast, director Tina Landau (who also came up with the show's concept); musical supervisor, arranger, orchestrator and co-composer Tom Kitt; and star Ethan Slater (who plays SpongeBob) chat about how this unorthodox musical made it to the stage.
Landau, a veteran theater director, was at first not at all sold on the idea of the show when Nickelodeon first approached her years ago. "I said an immediate no," she recalls. "You hear SpongeBob Musical and you go, 'What? How? Why?' I had the image of big theme park, arena show characters with big foam heads in my imagination. I knew that was something I wasn't interested in."
She changed her mind after learning that the cartoon's creator only wanted to do the show on Broadway "if it [had] an indie spirit" and there was "a reason to do it as a theater piece." Says Landau: "When I heard that -- and I was given permission to imagine exactly the kind of show I would get into seeing, which was somewhere between an art installation and a rock concert and a party and a great story all wrapped up in one, I thought yes, this is a property that allows for that and in fact invites it." She started developing ideas, and says the resultant show is "exactly an expression of who I really am."
It was Landau's idea to put together a score written by a variety of artists, reflecting the mashup nature of the cartoon's music, and Kitt's skills as a composer, arranger and orchestrator were essential in not only translating the contributing artists' ideas to the stage, but also in creating an overall coherent sound for SpongeBob. "It was my job just to figure out how this was going to be a theatrical score," Kitt explains. "As composers in musical theater, we're always trying to expand our own vocabulary and come up with different sensibilities and tonalities for a moment. And what Tina and Kyle [Jarrow, the show's book writer] did so brilliantly was they found exactly where the show wants to sing...that informed the writing, and I was able to take those moments and figure out how I was going to serve them theatrically."
In their freewheeling chat with host Rebecca Milzoff, Landau, Kitt and Slater delve into the development of the SpongeBob stage universe, how Slater created his character, and what it was like to work with a team of pop stars on the score.

Jace Norman & Cooper Barnes Bring 'Henry Danger' To Comic-Con Revolution 2018
Jace Norman and his Henry Danger co-star Cooper Barnes snap a photo together inside the famous DeLorean from Back to the Future last weekend.
The Henry Danger stars attended the Comic-Con Revolution convention in Ontario, California, where they met fans and talked on a panel about their show. This was the first time Henry Danger has been at a convention.
Jace and Cooper were also joined by Tommy Walker, who plays villain Drex on the show.
“The folks at #ComicConRevolution are a class act. A great time. Thank you. Amazing! And what a GREAT group of fans we met! Internet Sensations Max and Harvey to Perform at Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST 2018 UK
Internet sensations Max and Harvey have completed the resident act line up for this year’s SLIMEFEST in partnership with VisitBlackpool from 20th - 22nd October at The Arena, Blackpool Pleasure Beach!
Max and Harvey said “We are so excited to be performers at SLIMEFEST 2018!! We can't wait to see our fans and hang out with the other artists. We're ready to see everyone get slimed!"
Max and Harvey’s refreshingly fun and authentic sound has connected with fans across the globe – earning them over 17M views on their YouTube channel. The 15-year-old Berkshire based twin brothers got their start two years ago, posting covers and original songs on their social media platforms. Now with over 5M followers on Musically and over 800k followers on Instagram, the boys, who are signed to RMI recordings, are focusing on their original music. The boys were nominated for “Social Star” at the 2018 iHeart Radio Awards, completed a UK headlining tour, as well as releasing a book and documentary, so they show no signs of slowing down.
Councillor Gillian Campbell, the Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council said: “We cannot wait to welcome Max and Harvey to this year’s SLIMEFEST and we know everyone attending this year’s shows are going to be so excited to see them. More fabulous acts will be revealed shortly.”
Last year’s slime-filled music shows were a huge success with parents and kids alike. JoJo Siwa and Diversity are both returning to the SLIMEFEST stage this October as well as hosts Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely. Further headlining and supporting acts to be announced in the coming months.

Max and Harvey’s refreshingly fun and authentic sound has connected with fans across the globe – earning them over 17M views on their YouTube channel. The 15-year-old Berkshire based twin brothers got their start two years ago, posting covers and original songs on their social media platforms. Now with over 5M followers on Musically and over 800k followers on Instagram, the boys, who are signed to RMI recordings, are focusing on their original music. The boys were nominated for “Social Star” at the 2018 iHeart Radio Awards, completed a UK headlining tour, as well as releasing a book and documentary, so they show no signs of slowing down.
Councillor Gillian Campbell, the Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council said: “We cannot wait to welcome Max and Harvey to this year’s SLIMEFEST and we know everyone attending this year’s shows are going to be so excited to see them. More fabulous acts will be revealed shortly.”

Henry Hart's animated exploits as Kid Danger will unfold in Nickelodeon’s newest series, The Adventures of Kid Danger, which made its debut on Nickelodeon France on Saturday 19th May 2018! The 10-episode series follows the heroic Kid Danger and Captain Man as they embark on brave new adventures—battling bizarre criminals and super villains with their sharp wit and amazing crime-fighting skills. Locally titled Les aventures de Kid Danger, new episodes of The Adventures of Kid Danger will continue to air regularly weekdays at 18:10 on Nickelodeon France.
To celebrate the debut of Les aventures de Kid Danger, Nickelodeon also treated viewers to the brand-new Henry Danger episode “Animés par l'aventure” on Saturday 19th May 2018. In the episode, when Henry and Ray get a copy of the new Kid Danger and Captain Man cartoon and see that there’s trouble, they must hurry to fix the cartoon before the big premiere party. Olympian Shaun White guest stars as himself.
The half-hour animated series, based on characters from TV’s number one kids’ series Henry Danger, will reveal brand-new areas of the superheroes’ headquarters for the first time, including the Man Cave tube system, which propels the crime fighters into adventure; and the Man Hanger, filled with crime-fighting vehicles and gadgets used on missions.
For the US-English dub of The Adventures of Kid Danger, the original Henry Danger live-action cast continue their roles, now as voice talent, on the brand-new animated series: Jace Norman as “Henry Hart/Kid Danger;” Cooper Barnes as “Ray/Captain Man;” Michael D. Cohen as “Schwoz;” Riele Downs as “Charlotte;” Sean Ryan Fox as “Jasper;” Ella Anderson as “Piper Hart;” and Jeffrey Nicholas Brown as “Mr. Hart.”
In the series premiere, "Le monstre du pop-corn,"; when Ray and Henry’s cloning experiment to create two identical pieces of popcorn accidentally creates the Popcorn Monster, it’s up to Captain Man and Kid Danger to take it down. Next in "Game of Drones", Ray says he doesn’t want to enter the Swellview Drone Dash because Dr. Minyak always wins, so Schwoz hatches a plan to shrink Kid Danger and have him pilot his own drone.
The Adventures of Kid Danger first found life as a Nickelodeon short-form “motion comic” digital series, which debuted July 2015 in the USA. New episodes of live-action Henry Danger will continue to premiere on Nickelodeon throughout 2018.

Launched Saturday 19th May 2018, the #MaiGettareLaSpugna summer capsule collection features t-shirts and sweatshirts featuring designs that combine SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon's most beloved property, with the logo and team colours of Juventus, the most beloved football team in Italy, who have just won their seventh championship title.

For Nickelodeon’s cross-country play campaign, the net is partnering with non-profit organizations and foundations for fun-filled events that will feature Nick-themed games including a Super Slime obstacle course and Nick bowling, a slime booth, costume characters and more.
Tour stops include:
- May 24, Phoenix, Ariz. – Nickelodeon will team up with the Children’s Museum of Phoenix for an end-of-school celebration.
- June 21, St. Louis, Mo. – The net will partner with The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum for an event celebrating the first day of summer.
- August 19, Pittsburgh, Pa. – Nick will head to Heinz Field for the Pittsburgh Steelers Family Fest.
- September 8, Oakland, Calif. – The net will venture to California for an event in partnership with After-School All-Stars, the Oakland Athletics and the Oakland A’s Community Fund.
- September 15, Brooklyn, N.Y. – Nickelodeon is once again teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City’s Race for the Kids for a slime-filled and fitness-packed celebration.
On Sept. 29, Nickelodeon will commemorate its 15th annual Worldwide Day of Play celebration when the network will once again suspend programming across Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons, TeenNick and NickMusic, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (ET/PT), in order to encourage kids to go outside and get active. Worldwide Day of Play is part of Nickelodeon’s global ongoing health and wellness efforts and continues the network’s legacy of promoting positive messages to its viewers. To date, Nickelodeon has held WWDoP events in Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland, Germany, Italy, Russia and more.
