PHILADELPHIA--Oct. 27, 2023--First Lady of the United States Jill Biden joined Nickelodeon and ATTN: today to unveil Well Versed, a brand-new animated musical short-form series that aims to help teach kids about democracy and the U.S. Bill of Rights in fun and imaginative ways through original pop songs. With a curriculum guided by iCivics, the nation’s premiere non-profit civic education provider for students, parents and teachers, the series of 12 music videos will launch across Nickelodeon platforms, Paramount+ and Noggin, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 1. During the event, former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush also echoed her support in a video address.
The news was announced today at a National Civics Day event in Philadelphia, Penn., hosted by Nickelodeon and ATTN:, a leading purpose-driven social storytelling company, with participation from: Dr. Biden; a video message from Mrs. Bush; and remarks from Shari Redstone, Chair of Paramount; Brian Robbins, President and Chief Executive Officer of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon; and Matthew Segal, the co-founder of ATTN:.
In the First Lady’s video introduction of the series, she said: “All of us – people just like you, your friends, and your family – have an important role to play in our democracy. Your role right now, as you continue to grow up and go to school, is to learn. Learn everything you can about the things you love, the things that make you curious, but also take time to learn your rights as a citizen. One way to do this is through a topic called civics, and sometimes civics can be a little complicated to explain. That's why this new series called Well Versed uses music, imagination, creativity, and most of all, fun, to help explain a lot of important ideas about citizenship and participation. Democracy only works when all of us get involved and stay involved. So get ready to jump in, raise your hand, and let your voice be heard. I'm proud of you, and President Biden and I are counting on you.”
As part of her video message, Mrs. Bush said, “At the George W. Bush Institute, we’re committed to strengthening our democracy. We believe that we need to inspire public trust, promote service, encourage civility, tolerance, and compassion among Americans. But it’s especially important that we teach our children how to be engaged citizens… And that’s why I’m grateful that the Bush Institute is supporting a new effort: Well Versed… The animated videos debuting here today will help young Americans understand how our government works and the importance of our democratic liberties… But remember, you don’t have to be a President or a First Lady to contribute to our democracy. Each of us has the duty to be informed, engaged citizens, so today I ask you to join us in this important work. The future of our country depends on it.”
Ms. Redstone said, “We are thrilled to launch Well Versed to teach our children about how the government works and the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen. Our goal is for these videos to be played in classrooms and homes across the nation in order to help address the enormous gaps in civic literacy today. We are very grateful for the support of First Lady Jill Biden and former First Lady Laura Bush, which underscores the vital importance of civics education in safeguarding our democracy for the future.”
Said Robbins: “Nickelodeon since its inception has helped give kids a voice about the prosocial issues they care about the most, from the environment and community cleanups, to Kids Pick the President and now Well Versed, which combines a civics-themed curriculum with our brand’s cool factor to inspire a new generation of active and involved citizens. We are honored and proud to partner with our friends and colleagues at ATTN: and iCivics to create and launch this short-form series across the entire Nickelodeon ecosystem of linear and digital platforms, Paramount+ and Noggin to help make the biggest, and most positive impact possible.”
“Civic engagement is embedded in the DNA of ATTN:,” Segal said. “That’s why we’re proud to launch Well Versed in partnership with Nickelodeon and iCivics. The series not only brings civics education to life with incredible animation and catchy lyrics, it also includes great music that kids will listen to on repeat. We’re hopeful that our series invites audiences to celebrate their differences and participate in their democracy.”
“As the country’s leading civic education nonprofit, we know how important it is to reach students when they are young,” said Louise Dubรฉ, CEO of iCivics. “Civic education, like math and reading, needs to start early, with content that is age appropriate and relevant. The Well Versed series is a very exciting, new, and fun way to introduce fundamental concepts about American democracy. We are thrilled to partner with Nickelodeon and ATTN: in lending our educational expertise to these fantastic videos."
Told from a kid point of view, Well Versed centers on an animated group of diverse friends who introduce and musically explain a range of civics topics and concepts. With topics spanning the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, to government structure and laws, the 12 music videos feature eight sing-along videos designed for kids 6-11 and four specially created for preschoolers 2-5.
The voice cast for Well Versed features: Tickwanya Jones (LOL Surprise: The Movie) as Jade, a funny 14-year-old who is passionate about community engagement; Mykal-Michelle Harris (Raven's Home, Disney Junior’s Ariel) as Ava, Jade’s optimistic seven-year-old sister; Michael Johnston (Teen Wolf) as Max, Jade’s easy-going pal who is often uninformed about civics; Jamila Velazquez (West Side Story, Empire) as Carla, a popular and studious 12-year-old; and Jacob Pham (A Christmas Story at Ahmanson Theatre, Sesame Street) as Johnny, Ava’s high energy and chatty friend who is curious about everything.

In one of the clips from Well Versed, "Branches of Government," posted ahead of the series’ debut, the characters belt out a tune teaching viewers about the three branches of government, with a chorus that lauds checks and balances.
“Keep tyranny from our country, split up the powers — one, two, three!” the animated characters sing.
“When we understand civics — how our government works and how to hold it accountable — we are able to make each other and our country the best it can be,” Biden, an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, said in remarks at the kick-off event, which was timed to coincide with National Civics Day.
The push for a new generation of civics entertainment comes while United States citizens are flailing when it comes to understanding the basic functions of government.
Biden, a longtime educator and native of the Philadelphia region, was in full teacher mode at the Independence Visitors Center as she spoke to a class of fifth graders from the General George A. McCall School about the importance of democracy and the ideals the Founding Fathers forged at nearby Independence Hall following the American Revolution.

“At the Constitutional Convention, our founders created a government that was a little revolutionary at the time — a democracy, where power was given to the people, not to kings, and not to queens,” Biden said.
“That’s still how our government works, and it’s one of the things that makes our government so special,” the first lady continued. “When we understand civics — how our government works, and how to hold it accountable — we’re able to make each other and our country the best it can be.”
A prerecorded message from former first lady Laura Bush offered support for the show from the Bushes’ institute, while U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D., Pa.) sat in the front row.
In a special screening of Well Versed before Biden’s remarks — timed for Friday’s National Civics Day — the Center City schoolchildren bobbed their heads while the show’s civics heroes, with spunky purple and pink hair, rap-rhymed constitutional amendments and battled with an evil king threatening the democratic will of the people.
“For too long we’ve seen content around civics look more like something from 30 years ago than something kids want to watch made in 2023,” said Segal, of ATTN.
Among other concerning figures offered by Segal: Only seven U.S. states have a middle school civics requirement. Last year, he said, eighth-grade civics scores declined for the first time in more than two decades.

Well Versed’s lessons were created in partnership with iCivics, a national nonprofit founded by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor that develops free nonpartisan online games and resources designed to help young Americans learn about civic life. As many as 145,000 educators and 9 million students use iCivics material each year, according to the company.
“Our style at Nick is never to talk down to kids,” said Robbins. “We always want to talk to them, have a conversation, listen to them. That tradition continues with Well Versed.”
The screening was a welcome escape from the McCall classroom at Seventh and Panama Streets. The outing, however, didn’t come without a little homework.
Following the screening, the first lady quizzed a brave trio of students; questions included naming the branches of government, as well as the big, white building in Washington where her husband, Joe, spends much of his time.
The launch of "Well Versed" ended with a slimy surprise. Jessica Griffin / The Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Photographer
Despite the troubling statistics Segal offered earlier, the students aced the first lady’s test. Their social studies teacher, Audrey Russell, watched proudly from the audience.
“Thank you to our first lady, Mrs. Biden, for her support of civics education,” Russell said. “Well Versed will be a fantastic tool for educators.”
And in typical Nickelodeon fashion, the fun ended with a slimy surprise.
To the joyous screams of their classmates, the trio of pupils was doused with green slime that oozed down from buckets held above their heads.
The first lady took a big step back to avoid any collateral sludge.
“I can’t even look,” Biden said with a laugh.
When it comes to civics class, gone are the days of Schoolhouse Rock!’s “I’m Just a Bill.”

In honor of National Civics Day, the First Lady of the United States and Nickelodeon will announce a new short-form television series to teach kids about civics.
In celebration of National Civics Day, Jill Biden will visit Philadelphia on Friday, October 27 and join Nickelodeon and media company ATTN: to announce a new animated kids show that will have viewers singing about civics.
The Oct. 27 holiday marks the day the Federalist Papers were published in 1787.
Biden is a longtime educator who became the first first lady to work full-time outside the White House and teaches at Northern Virginia Community College. Her relationship with Nickelodeon goes back to 2022, when she paid tribute to military families through a video message broadcast on the network’s Kids’ Choice Awards, with an introduction by iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove, who co-hosted that year's ceremony alongside NFL superstar Rob Gronkowski.
The new short-form series being announced Friday, called Well Versed, will teach kids about democracy and the U.S. Bill of Rights through original pop songs. The series features 12 music videos that will be available across Nickelodeon platforms, Paramount+, and Noggin, starting Wednesday, October 26.
The lessons were created in partnership with iCivics, a national nonprofit founded by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor that develops free nonpartisan online games and resources designed to help young Americans learn about civic life. As many as 145,000 educators and 9 million students use iCivics material each year, according to the company.
Well Versed music videos cover topics like rules and disagreements for kids ages 2-5, and the Bill of Rights and branches of government for children ages 6-11. The videos and learning guides are available for free on the iCivics website.
Along with the first lady, Shari Redstone, chair of Paramount Global, Matthew Sega, co-CEO of ATTN:, and Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, will make remarks at the announcement Friday.
And Biden isn’t the only first lady embracing the new show. Former first lady Laura Bush will deliver remarks through a video message.
Biden, who was born across the Delaware River in Hammonton, N.J., and grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Willow Grove, often touts her Philly connections.
She will be integral to President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, and with November 2024 barely over a year away, is expected to make many more visits to the critical swing state of Pennsylvania.
Frequent visitors to the Philadelphia area for both political and family visits, the presidential couple attended their granddaughter Maisy’s graduation together in May at the University of Pennsylvania, which several of their grandchildren have attended.
The president has visited Philadelphia eight times this year. Most recently, he came this month to announce funding for hydrogen energy projects.
