Nickelodeon to Take Part in VIEW Conference 2020

In celebration of its 21st anniversary, Italy’s premiere digital media even VIEW Conference brings together no less than 160 world-class filmmakers, producers, studio executives, animators, artists, game developers, musicians, journalists and educators during a lively week delivering 125 online and onsite talks, workshops, masterclasses and panels.

This impressive lineup will be presented October 18 to 23 in Torino, Italy, with all sessions being made available online. Furthermore, for this year only, all content – both the regular program and the special Business Innovation Summit – will be absolutely free.

“There has been so much bad news in 2020,” says Conference Director Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez, “so I’m thrilled to be able to share some great news for a change. Everyone could use some extra light and joy in their lives, so we have made the unprecedented decision to make this year’s conference completely free!” Supporting the free access, every session will be available online, allowing anyone to attend anywhere in the world. “This is a fantastic chance to grow the VIEW community, and to welcome into our family participants who are unable to travel to Torino or buy a full access pass.”

Keynoting the conference is Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar and former president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios. A true computer graphics visionary, Catmull pioneered such fundamentals as texture mapping, bicubic patches and spatial anti-aliasing. He is author of the book Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration, described as “the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar.”

Also headlining are two bona fide legends from the world of visual effects: nine-time Academy Award winner Dennis Muren, creative director at Industrial Light & Magic; and Phil Tippett, director, producer, visual effects supervisor, founder of Tippett Studio and winner of two Oscars. Muren achieved breakthrough work at the dawn of the digital revolution on films such as The Abyss and Jurassic Park. Tippett and ILM originated the revolutionary Go-Motion technique, which combined stop-motion animation with motion control technology. Through their long careers, both have continued to steer the art and science of visual effects to ever greater heights.

Additionally, Paul Debevec, senior engineer at GoogleVR, will deliver a keynote to launch the VIEW 2020 Business Innovation Summit. This carefully curated series of presentations and workshops takes place within the main conference, and provides insight not only into the creative process behind the latest movies, games and experiences, but also the synergy between that creativity and the industries it serves.

“Our keynotes bring such an extraordinary depth of talent and experience to the conference,” Dr. Gutierrez says. “Yet they are only the start. This year, I’m especially proud of the diversity of topics and speakers. For example, 43 of our speakers are women, including studio heads, animated film directors, producers, visual effects artists and game developers. We have a number of highly topical talks and panels addressing the challenges of production during the COVID-19 pandemic, plus others looking at the latest production tools and techniques – including a panel on virtual production with Westworld’s Jay Worth, Sam Nicholson of Stargate Studios and Habib Zargarpour from Unity. We have panels on storytelling, lighting, women in virtual production … the list goes on!”

The VIEW 2020 lineup includes more than 30 studio heads and chief creative officers. Mireille Soria, president of Paramount Animation, joins Disney’s Osnat Shurer, producer of Raya and the Last Dragon and Moana, and Maureen Fan, co-founder and CEO of Baobab Studios, for a panel on Women in the Animation Industry.

A panel on diversity and inclusion in animation moderate by Animation Magazine’s editor Ramin Zahed features Ramsey Naito, president of Nickelodeon Animation, who will also host a special Nickelodeon session showcasing the work of Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) and Niki Lopez (Santiago of the Seas). Meanwhile, Rob Bredow, head of ILM, contemplates nothing less than the future of entertainment itself.

The Conference also brings together 30 directors of animated feature films, short films, and animated television series including Kris Pearn (The Willoughbys), Sergio Pablos (Klaus), Kyle Balda (Minions), Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Walt Dohrn (Trolls World Tour), Joel Crawford (The Croods), Conrad Vernon (The Addams Family), Eric Darnell (Madagascar) and Jeff Rowe (Nickelodeon’s upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

In a special panel, directors Jorge R. Gutierrez (The Book of Life, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, Coco), Tony Bancroft (Animal Crackers) and Cartoon Saloon co-founder Tomm Moore (co-director of Wolfwalkers with Ross Stewart) will debate the future of cinema.

Disney-Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Soul gets the all-star VIEW Conference treatment in a special presentation in which animation supervisor Bobby Podesta, lead lighting technical director Max Bickley and technical director Markus Kranzler discuss their artistic and technical approaches to creating the world of “The Great Before,” where souls acquire their personalities before coming to Earth.

Digging deeper into the packed program reveals world-class professionals at every turn. Representing visual effects are ILM’s Roger Guyett (Star Wars), Hal Hickel (The Mandalorian), Stefen Fangmeier (Game of Thrones), Weta Digital’s Anders Langlands (Mulan), Jay Worth (Westworld) and Framestore creative director Tim Webber (Gravity). Sharing their expertise on AR/VR/XR and real-time media are Unity’s Ron Martin and Sébastien Deguy, vice president of 3D and Immersive at Adobe, while from Baobab Studios, head of content Kane Lee and CTO Larry Cutler will discuss the making of their latest VR project, Baba Yaga. Conference attendees won’t want to miss legendary Cornell professor Dr. Donald Greenberg in conversation with Eloi Champagne, technical director for VR at the National Film Board of Canada. Also on hand to share their insights are creative consultant Rafi Nizam and Pixar’s Dylan Sisson.

Game developers and artists are equally well represented in a huge range of workshops, masterclasses and sessions. Topics include the art of storytelling with Nordeus’ Nikola Damjanov – who also joins concept artist Sébastien Hue and Respawn art director Todd Sue for a panel on game art – art direction with Guerilla Games’ Jan-Bart Van Beek, and creating a game studio with Nordeus co-founder Milan Jovovic. Naughty Dog art directors John Sweeney and Erick Pangilinan lift the lid on this year’s hit action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II.

Widening the scope yet further, Pixar co-founder Dr. Alvy Ray Smith will preview his groundbreaking book, The Biography of the Pixel, scheduled for publication Spring 2021, while Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes will showcase her work from The Washington Post.

Just before the conference launches, audiences can enjoy a special preVIEW workshop with Tony Bancroft, in which the Annie Award-winning animator and Animal Crackers co-director teaches the craft of Animating Comedy Characters.

The impact of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has challenged the entire world. Like so many businesses around the globe, the digital media and entertainment industries have risen to these challenges, committing to daring and innovative solutions while maintaining focus and optimism. VIEW Conference is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of so many extraordinary people in this turbulent year.

“Earlier this year, I wondered how we could create a conference in 2020 with the same value as previous years,” says Dr. Gutierrez. “But when we reached out to our international VIEW family the response was fantastic, and I’m immensely proud to say we have gone beyond anything I could have imagined. VIEW 2020 will be interactive, innovative, inspiring – and free for everyone to enjoy. I couldn’t be more excited!”

Learn more about the event and register now at www.viewconference.it.

Cooper Barnes Talks 'Henry Danger', 'Danger Force', Stunts and Growing Older

The guys at ComicBookMovie.com recently had the chance to chat with actor and voice actor Cooper Barnes in support of the motion comic sci-fi podcast Ride Share, and they learned all about his time playing Captain Man in Henry Danger and Danger Force!

The Henry Danger franchise has been highly successful on Nickelodeon for the past decade, spinning out into The Adventures of Kid Danger and Danger Force, and there was even talk of a Henry Danger movie bring in the works.

CBM recently spoke with Cooper Barnes in support of his latest project, Ride Share, an audio/video hybrid podcast that utilizes a motion comic animation style inspired by the BET Black Panther series. Since Cooper has played Captain Man in Henry Danger for the past seven years, they were sure to pick his brain about the show.

CBM learned a lot about the stuntwork that goes into the roles and the difference in the ease of voice acting. To hear CBM's chat with actor and voice actor Cooper Barnes click the podcast player below.

Literary Joe: How is Danger Force related to Henry Danger?

Cooper Barnes: It's a sequel continuing the adventures of the characters from Henry Danger.

Literary Joe: Can you talk to me about your history with the character you play and how that's advanced?

Cooper Barnes: I've played Captain Man on Henry Danger and now on Danger Force for the last seven years in December. Playing the guy has become easier and easier and also harder and harder. Mentally it's easier to play him. But, physically, it's harder to play him because he's an indestructible man who is in excellent shape, and I'm not indestructible.

I'm a mere mortal, and working out every day for seven years is hard. Everyone loves to give it up to Chris Hemsworth (Ghostbusters: Answer the Call), who shoots one movie every year. Not that the guy doesn't stay in shape, but I've got to do it three days a week, every day. It's exhausting, and a little old after a while, especially during the coronavirus pandemic with the gyms closed. I'm having to get creative and do curls with milk jugs or whatever the hell is around the house.

That aspect is more demanding, and I'm leaning on my stuntman more than I used to. I used to do most of my stunts. Now I do 50% or less of my stunts. But the guy is indestructible! He gets hit in the head with shovels and stuff. You can't do that for too long before you need to tap out and be like, "Hey, can we get Duffy to do this? Duff you want to get hit in the head with a shovel and stuff?" and stuntmen are always like, "yeah, hell yeah, hit me with the shovel I'm down."

Literary Joe: Do you work with a team or just one stuntman?

Cooper Barnes: I've had several stuntmen over the years. I've had Eric Linden, Mark R. Miscione, Nick Benseman, and now Duffy McManus, who has been my stuntman for about a year and a half, maybe almost two years now. He's great; they've all been fantastic. Stuntmen and women are made of something else. They have bones made of steel, and they have an impeccable spirit and can't be hurt. It's crazy. Obviously, they can be hurt, but it's amazing how resilient and tough they are and fearless.

I have a whole lot of respect for that entire community. Our stunt coordinator Vince Deadrick Jr. was nominated for an Emmy this year for Henry Danger and lost to Shameless somehow? We have an action-adventure show. I've never seen Shameless, but I don't think there are lots of stunts. Unless the stunts involve William H. Macy getting drunk and falling, that seems to be that show. I don't know I've never seen it. I shouldn't pass judgment since I've never seen it.

But for seven years, Vince Deadrick has been smashing people through skylights and walls, setting people on fire and all sorts of awesome stuff. But not to poo-poo it, the fact that he got nominated was well-deserved and awesome. And he's great. It's been an honor working with that team.

Now, mentally, it's been easier to play the character because he's getting older, and he has watched a group of kids that he pseudo-raised, move on, and grow up and leave the nest. That's been incredibly emotional, not only for him but also for me. It's hard to watch the little kids that you have had a big part in raising.

Not to discount what their parents are doing, but when they spend 12 hours out of their day with me, I am their parent figure for better or worse. I've become very close to them and would like to think that I had some impact on their lives, and now they're gone. It's sad to see that. But, that's life, the kids grow up.

I have a child of my own now, which I didn't have at the beginning so that emotional element of knowing that these kids grow up and how fast they grow up makes me bond with these new kids and with my child so much more. My kid, she's four, but she's going to be five pretty soon and then she'll be ten and then she'll go to school, and she'll leave us. I hope she becomes an actor for selfish reasons, so she'll stay in LA, who knows?

Literary Joe: Having done this for seven years, is this the most extended role you've ever committed to?

Cooper Barnes: Yeah, hands down. Everything else I've ever done has been one or two things here or there, one-off projects, one-off characters. This was my golden ticket, and I'm very fortunate for it. He's a great character, and I love playing him. He's fun. He's cathartic because there are many facets to his personality that are ridiculous and out there. I'm able to stay reasonably calm in my own life even though the world's a crazy place.

Every episode, he's losing his mind about something he's a very emotional man. It's easy for me to put the real emotions I'm feeling on screen. Whether its bittersweet feelings come with watching kids grow up before your eyes or the anger and rage associated with the nutso world around us, it's easy to funnel that through this emotionally unstable character.

Literary Joe: Before I wrap up, is there anything you would like to mention or plug?

Cooper Barnes: We've got new episodes of Danger Force that are coming out soon. We're about three episodes into the latest batch of our order. So new episodes coming your way in the next month. Ride Share is available to listen to now as well as Last Best Hope. You can go to @lastbesthope on Instagram and find out where you can listen to those. Several episodes of that are available.

Literary Joe: Also, what is the animated series called? What show is that?

Cooper Barnes: It's in the same family. It's called The Adventures of Kid Danger. It's a spinoff, but not really. It's not really what nerds refer to as canon or what I would refer to as canon. I don't know at what point in the story it takes place, but they were fun. For whatever reason, the ratings were excellent, but the executive producer and the network had a falling out of sorts. So for whatever reason, they didn't continue it.

I don't know where that's airing, but it's airing around the world somewhere. Cause they keep paying me for it. I would love to have a future in voice-over. So if anyone's listening to this and likes the sound of my voice, I'm tired of lifting weights, and I want to do this.

Literary Joe: Are there any specific fandoms that you'd like to steer into as far as anything in animation, comic characters, or videogame wise that you'd like to be a part of?

Cooper Barnes: I don't know anything about video games. I understand that they need voice-over actors, though, and that's always cool. I'm not at all tired of playing Captain Man. I enjoy playing Captain Man, but it's a lot of work, and it's worth it. My old man said, "nothing worth having comes easy," and I'd stand by that. But, I would love to pick up a voice-over gig occasionally. Any genre would be great.
