'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin' R-Rated Live-Action Movie in Development

Tyler Burton Smith, who co-wrote the upcoming action movie Boy Kills World, is penning the script for this high-body count tale.

TMNT: The Last Ronin

After the success of last year’s animated hit film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Paramount Pictures is keeping turtle power going by putting a new feature project into development.

This one, however, will go beyond the realm of the all-ages material the long-standing property is known for and instead return to the grittier tone that defined Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's original comic book run for Mirage Studios,

Paramount is developing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, adapting a popular storyline seen in the recent IDW comics, as a live-action feature with the intent of making it for an R-rating.

Tyler Burton Smith, who co-wrote the upcoming R-rated action movie Boy Kills World and who wrote the 2019 iteration of Chucky horror franchise Child’s Play, is penning the script.

Walter Hamada is producing through his 18hz production company as part of his multiyear deal with the studio. Hamada is the former head of DC Films who rose through the ranks at New Line, where he oversaw the Warner Bros. division’s horror movies, including The Conjuring and It franchises. His 18hz banner is focused on making features in the horror genre. Hamada's credits also include Matt Reeves' dark and moody neo-noir The Batman and the R-rated Joker for DC.

A New York Times best seller, The Last Ronin was conceived as "the final story" of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Co-written by Tom Waltz (IDW's TMNT) with pencils and inks by artists Esau & Isaac Escorza (Heavy Metal) and Ben Bishop (The Far Side of the Moon), the climactic Turtle tale pit the lone warrior against the grandson of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello's old archnemesis: the Shredder.

Set in a totalitarian future New York City, the comic miniseries told of how the Turtles and master Splinter are killed off one by one, by the grandson of the villainous Shredder and synthetic ninjas. One Turtle manages to survive, barely, and vows to exact bloody vengeance. One trick of the book was that it wasn’t clear, for a while at least, which one of the Turtles lived, as the survivor had the weapons of all four Turtles — Leo's katana, Raph's sai, Donny's bō staff, and Mikey's nunchucks — and is haunted by hallucinations of his dead brothers. The dramatic first issue sees the Ronin attempt seppuku before continuing his vengeful crusade against the last Oroku.

The mini-series launched the "Ronin-Verse" and a prequel, titled Last Ronin — The Lost Years, which spanned the devastating series of events leading up to the Last Ronin's final battle.

The Last Ronin is about as terrifying as a Turtles tale can get.

Co-creator Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz wrote the comic based on an older story by Eastman and co-creator Peter Laird. Artists included Esau and Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop and Eastman.

IDW, the publisher that holds the license for the Ninja Turtles comics, put out the books between 2020 and 2022. The comics were an unexpected massive hit, with the collected trade paperback being the second-highest-selling graphic novel of 2023, per Circana BookScan.

The comic book company recently released the sequel TMNT: The Last Ronin II — Re-Evolution, with the debut issue touted as being one of the biggest comics of the year, with more than 140,000 copies ordered.

Ninja Turtles debuted as a black-and-white indie comic in 1984, parodying comics like Chris Claremont’s X-Men comics and Frank Miller’s ninja-focused work. A toy deal turned the comic into a generational touchstone in the late 1980s, abetted by a bright and cheerful animated series, followed by a hit live-action movie wherein the Turtles were played by actors in suits.

Over the years, more animated series came at audiences like twirling nunchucks while Paramount, which landed the rights to the property via Viacom in 2009, put out two live-action movie produced by Michael Bay that starred Megan Fox and Will Arnett in the mid-2010s, whilst Nickelodeon produced two animated series, the CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2012 and the 2D-animated Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2018.

Mutant Mayhem, produced by Seth Rogen’s Point Grey, brought back a respectable sheen to the property by giving it a cool outsider point a view. Critics and audiences liked what the saw, with the animated movie grossing over $118.6 at the domestic box office. A sequel is now in the works, currently slated to be released in theaters on Friday, October 9, 2026, as well as a Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, an animated series that will serve as a bridge between Mutant Mayhem and its upcoming sequel, set to be released on Paramount+ this summer.

In addition to the movie, THQ Nordic is currently working on a TMNT: The Last Ronin video game based on the beloved IDW TMNT graphic novel series of the same name. The title is currently in development in partnership with Black Forest Games and Nickelodeon, and will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game's release date has yet to be announced.

IDW is also relaunching a mainline Ninja Turtles comic series timed to the title’s 40th anniversary.

The Turtles delivered in $1 billion in retail sales for Paramount.

No release date was announced for Last Ronin.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies through seven movies have grossed $1.3 billion.

Smith is repped by WME and Grandview.

The cast includes Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton).

The Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies release, based on the beloved series created by Stephen Hillenburg, is being directed by Derek Drymon. Pam Brady and Lisa Stewart and producing. Paramount chief Brian Robbins called it “the biggest SpongeBob ever.”

‘Smurfs’ Movie Cast Unveiled: Nick Offerman, James Corden, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Kurt Russell, John Goodman, and More

Paramount‘s new animated Smurfs movie announced its voice cast at CinemaCon on Thursday, April 11.

The Smurfs
The Smurfs / Paramount

During the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday (April 11), Paramount chief Brian Robbins announced that an all-star cast has been set for the film including Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña with Kurt Russell and John Goodman. Or, as Robbins put it, “Pretty much the rest of the Screen Actors Guild.” He also praised Rihanna as “the most legendary Smurfette ever.”

The news comes one year after Rihanna turned up to surprise CinemaCon 2023 attendees on the Colosseum stage inside Caesars Palace to announce that she had signed on to tackle the project as a triple threat by providing the voice of Smurfette, producing alongside Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith, and contributing original music.

Based on the characters of Belgian comics writer and artist Peyo, the movie is described as a comedic, musical adventure “that sets out to answer one of life’s biggest questions:  What is a Smurf?”

Chris Miller, the Oscar-nominated director of 2011’s Puss in Boots, is helming the project, with South Park's Pam Brady wring the script. Matt Landon is co-director.

Ryan Harris, Rihanna, Laurence “Jay” Brown and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith are producers. Rihanna is penning original songs.

The movie hits theaters on February 14, 2025.

In addition to the movie, Nickelodeon has picked up a third season of the hit The Smurfs animated series.

Dave Bautista and Eric Nam to Headline Voice Cast for New ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Animated Movie at Paramount, Nickelodeon

Dave Bautista and Eric Nam are set to headline the voice cast for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movie in development at Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Studios. The film’s working title is Aang: The Last Airbender. The news was announced during Paramount’s slate presentation at CinemaCon.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Nam will voice Aang, and Bautista will voice a villain character.

Joining Bautista and Nam in the voice cast are Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten and Roman Zaragoza.

Plot details for the film remain under wraps, however, it is known that the movie will follow Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko as young adults, following. The movie will be set between the events of the finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra.

The new Avatar animated film is set for release on October 10, 2025 from Paramount.

The studios announced in June 2022 that three standalone Avatar animated films were in development through their Avatar Studios label. The 2025 film was the first to get a release date. Lauren Montgomery, who worked on the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, is directing the project, with original series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko executive producing alongside Eric Coleman. William Mata, a veteran storyboard artist who worked on DC League of Super Pets, is co-directing. Producers on the film include Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger.

“Fans of the beloved Avatar have been asking and we’ve answered the call,” Paramount chief Brian Robbins said of the film, the first of three animated films in the series.

Eric Nam is a popular K-pop idol, and has been a part of projects such as The Loud House, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, and created a number of projects for his musical career in South Korea.

When it comes to Dave Bautista, his acting resume is almost too long to count in one article, but most recently, he has had roles in Dune 2, Knives Out: The Glass Onion, and Studio Ghibli's The Boy And The Heron. While Bautista's role has yet to be revealed, it's sure to be a challenging one for Aang and his friends since the benders came a long way in the original animated series.

Airing for three seasons between 2005 and 2008, Avatar: The Last Airbender followed Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), a young boy reawakening in a war-torn world of elemental magic to undertake a dangerous mystic quest—thereby fulfilling his destiny as the Avatar, and bringing peace to the world. Nickelodeon followed up that hugely popular series with sequel The Legend of Korra, which aired for four seasons between 2012 and 2014. In the years since, the multimedia franchise has continued to expand with a 2010 live-action feature starring Dev Patel, which M. Night Shyamalan directed, as well as assorted best-selling comics, books, video games and home media releases. A live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series recently debuted at Netflix, which has been renewed for seasons two and three.

The original animated “Avatar” series ran from 2005 to 2008 on Nickelodeon, with “The Legend of Korra” continuing its story from 2012 to 2014. The shows follow the adventures of the mystical Avatar, a person who can master all four elements of nature: air, water, earth and fire. The original series starred Avatar Aang, who must learn to master the elements to defeat the evil Fire Nation with his friends Katara, Sokka and Toph. Netflix released a live-action version of the show earlier this year.

Avatar Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Toph Set to Land In Fortnite

Three new Avatar: The Last Airbender outfits are available in Fortnite.

Fornite x Avatar: The Last Airbender
Fortnite

Fortnite's latest collaboration has arrived in the Item Shop, with content from Avatar: The Last Airbender now available for purchase. After teasing Katara's outfit, the handful of additions were revealed in a video posted to the Fortnite official X account showcasing water bender Katara, earth bender Toph, and fire bender Zuko. The newest trio of characters joins titular character from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, whose outfit has been available since April 2 with the Chapter 5 Season 2 Battle Pass content along with the Waterbending mythic. The Fornite x Avatar: The Last Airbender collaboration lasts through May 3.

Fortnite x Avatar: Elements - Gameplay Trailer

The three new additions align with the Avatar: Elements event that begins Friday, April 12, at 9 a.m. EST, where players can also still expect to see the Last Airbender himself in the store as the battle royale continues to introduce separate mini-Battle Passes for the noteworthy collaborations, a trend that will apparently continue for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Similar to the TMNT "Cowabunga" event, an Avatar: Elements pass will be part of the collaboration, with high profile leaker @ShiinaBR on X sharing information about the pass:

  • Instantly unlock "Aang" after purchase
  • Price: 1,000 V-Bucks
  • Free & Paid Reward Tracks
  • Skins have normal & LEGO variants
  • The event ends on May 3
  • "Appa" Glider available towards event end

The Avatar: Elements pass will feature the usual free and paid options with different cosmetic rewards offered for both. Players can expect to pay 1,000 V-Bucks for the paid track, noting that Aang will be unlocked after purchasing the Premium Elements Pass.

How To Get The Outfits

The Katara skin is included in the Katara and Zuko & Katara bundles. The former costs 2,000 V-Bucks and includes:

  • Katara skin
  • Katara's Waterskin back bling
  • Southern Water Tribe Club pickaxe

As with Katara, Zuko can be obtained in the Item Shop in the Zuko and Zuko & Katara bundles. The solo bundle pack also costs 2,000 V-Bucks and includes:

  • Zuko skin
  • Zuko's Broadswords pickaxe
  • Zuko's Scabbard Back Bling

The Zuko & Katara bundle is definitely the best value if you're after all of the above items, because all six will be obtained for 3,200 V-Bucks, saving players 20% for the same content. Meanwhile, Toph will only included in the Toph Beifong Pack, another 2,000 V-Buck bundle which includes:

  • Toph Beifong skin
  • War Hammers pickaxe
  • Earth Rumble Belt back bling

There isn't a bundle that includes all three skins, so players will have to spend 5,200 V-Bucks overall in order to secure Katara, Zuko, and Toph. An Air Flurry emote is also available in the Item Shop for 500 V-Bucks.

There’s a loading screen showing all of them in action, and there is also a video showing off the new bending mythics coming to the game as well, all of which look awesome. Here’s what that looks like in action. The wind wheel is really something in particular.
