Nick Latin America Announces Partnership with Nickelodeon Animation Studios to Bring Lollipop Theater Network's 'Be Creative' Initiative to Four Hospitals in Mexico

Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) today (July 6) announced a partnership with Nickelodeon Animation Studios to bring Lollipop Theater Network's "Be Creative" ("Ser Creativa") initiative to four hospitals in Mexico.

Lollipop Theater Network is a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to bringing movies and entertainment to children who remain hospitalized due to chronic or life-threatening illnesses and along with them, Nickelodeon Latin America, in collaboration with Nickelodeon Animation Studios have made a great alliance in Mexico to improve the well-being of patients in a creative way.

"Ser Creativa" will feature Daniela Rodríguez De La Peña, a Mexican artist who serves as a storyboard artist on Nickelodeon's Rugrats reboot. For this special occasion, Daniela will give a drawing class over Zoom to all the children in the paediatric hospitals of Legaria, Tacubaya, Hospital Juárez de México and the Instituto Nacional Pediatría to teach them that the strength and drive for life can never be watered down. As they draw, the children will be able to talk with the artist, ask her all kinds of questions, resolve their concerns and even share drawings of their favourite Nickelodeon characters.

"We are at a time as a company where we have the moral responsibility to be able to help civil society with voluntary actions that reflect our corporate values," said Laura Pérez, Senior Vice President (SVP) of LATAM content distribution and General Director of ViacomCBS Networks Americas for Mexico and North Latin America, adding "we are excited to carry out these types of alliances because for ViacomCBS, we believe it is important to be able to generate a positive impact on those who need it most."

To carry out this project, Nickelodeon Latin America, Nickelodeon Animation Studio and Lollipop Theater Network will work together with two other non-profit organisations in Mexico to join forces to benefit those who need it most. “Hypatia” (Difusión de asuntos internacionales Hypatia AC) will help with the coordination of the participating paediatric hospitals while “Leer Contigo” will be lending the digital devices to the children for this activity while their team will coordinate and accompany the children in the hospitals.

Daniela Rodríguez De La Peña is a Mexican artist currently working as a Storyboard Artist on Nickelodeon's Rugrats reboot. At the age of 11, she left her home in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico to continue her education in the United States. The sudden cultural change and language barrier sparked her love for drawing, which led her down an educational path in animation. In 2017, she graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a double major in Animation and Illustration and a minor in Computer Science. A year later, she began her career at Nickelodeon as a Storyboard Revisionist at Middle School Moguls and has been a part of the Nickelodeon family ever since!

In her spare time, she enjoys working on her own projects by finding inspiration in her everyday adventures and interests. Her love of action and comedy often leads her to endless hours of Japanese anime and Star Wars, which also deeply influence her storytelling style.

Nickelodeon Unveils 'Middlemost Post' Intro and Theme Song

Special delivery! Nickelodeon today shared a first look at the opening titles and theme song for Middlemost Post, ahead of the show's premiere on Friday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT)!

Composed by Matt and Tish Mahaffey, the theme song sets up the premise of the series which stars Angus, a former boat captain, and his partner, a former rain cloud named Parker J. Cloud. The duo, joined by their pet walrus, are tasked with delivering packages for the residents of Mount Middlemost as the owner and employee of the titular Middlemost Post.

The Middlemost Post theme song will be included on Nickelodeon's upcoming Mega Music Fest Album, set to be released on July 16. The 10-track album will be available on all major streaming platforms. The album will include tunes from other shows, including The Loud House, Tyler Perry's Young Dylan, The Casagrandes, Side Hustle and more.

Marking Nickelodeon’s first original animated series in five years, Middlemost Post hails from SpongeBob SquarePants’ alum John Trabbic III and follows a former rain cloud, a brawny mailman and their magical pet walrus as they deliver packages to the unusual inhabitants of Mount Middlemost.

In the debut episode, “First Delivery,” while delivering a letter to a house that never gets mail, the gang goes through warfare to get to its front door. Next in “Chore or Less,” in an attempt to be more like Angus, Parker does the chores and realizes that they’re actually boring.

The Middlemost Post voice cast includes Becky Robinson (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts) as Parker J. Cloud, an exuberant, relentlessly kind, overly eager, and most of all, pliable cloud who’s desire is to spread cheer; John DiMaggio (Futurama) as Angus Roy Shackelton, Parker’s boss and proprietor of the Middlemost Post; Kiren (Raising Hope) as Lily, Parker’s best friend and master inventor;  Colton Dunn (Superstore) as Mayor Peeve, the petty Mayor of the city of Somewhere locked in a petty, one-sided feud with Angus; and Johnny Pemberton (In the Loop) as Ryan, Mayor Peeve’s loyal assistant.

Middlemost Post is created and co-executive produced by John Trabbic III. Dave Johnson serves as co-executive producer and story editor for Middlemost Post, with production overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series, Animation, Nickelodeon.

Middlemost Post will debut alongside The Patrick Star Show, the second spinoff of the number-one animated series SpongeBob SquarePants.

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, each series will continue to rollout new episodes Friday nights on Nickelodeon and debut internationally in the fall.

Nickelodeon, now in its 42nd year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The brand includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, digital, location based experiences, publishing and feature films. 'Avatar: Last Airbender' Co-Creator Says That There's So Much He'd Fix About the Series

Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko also weighed in on "The Great Divide" episode and provided a few updates on Avatar Studios.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed TV series out there, especially in animation — but its creators can still find a few things to nitpick.

Avatar plunged viewers into a fantastical world where the four elements are represented by differing nations. In telling the story of Aang, the titular Avatar who has the ability to wield all the elements, the series offered complex characters, fascinating world-building, and plenty of heart. As a result, Avatar is widely regarded as one of the best kids' shows of all time.

Just to underscore how beloved Avatar has become over the years, it has led to the creation of its own franchise. Along with Michael Dante DiMartino, Konietzko created the sequel series The Legend of Korra in 2012 and wrote several comics set after both shows. Currently, the pair are working with Nickelodeon's new Avatar Studios to create even more content for the world of Avatar, starting with an animated movie. All of this is on top of the live-action series Netflix is still in the midst of developing, though Konietzko and DiMartino departed that project last year.

In Tuesday's (June 29) episode of the Avatar recap podcast Braving the Elements, co-host Dante Basco (who voiced Zuko on ATLA) talked to the show's creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, about the belief many fans have that they created the "perfect show."

"That blows me away — there's so much that I would fix," Konietzko responded.

"There's a bunch of stuff that I just think, 'Ugh, I wish that scene was animated better; I don't like the way this character's looking in this episode,'" he added, before conceding that "you can only fix so much."

As writers, executive producers, and directors of the series, which aired 2005 to 2008 on Nickelodeon, it makes sense that the pair would be critical of their work. But they did what they could, working with an animation studio overseas, providing meticulous notes, and doing retakes on any animation errors or new creative directions.

"Sure, it would be nice if it all was super slick and looked its utter best, but it still delivers this really powerful, complete package to people that goes straight to their hearts," Konietzko contended.

The duo also gave their honest thoughts on episodes some fans were unhappy with and viewed as "filler." They defended one such episode, Book 1's "The King of Omashu" as being "super crucial" as an introduction to the recurring character Bumi. However, they're with viewers about another controversial episode, "The Great Divide," which featured Aang and his friends trying to usher two feuding clans safely across a treacherous canyon.

"The most famous one is 'The Great Divide' one, which I'll give them, I'll say that's pretty 'filler-y,'" DiMartino admitted.

"That's terrible," Konietzko also said. When Basco suggested that they could've improved the installment by changing the ending, he responded, "Nah, I don't think that would have saved it."

"You've got this big gap; it's a big empty hole, yet it is filler," Konietzko quipped, adding, "Yeah, I was not happy with it." But he did note that he enjoyed the canyon crawler creatures in the episode. "Even the episodes that I wasn't as stoked on, there were always moments that I really liked."

Luckily there are plenty of fans who believe Avatar is excellent just as it is, so Konietzko shouldn't take these things too hard.

The duo also discussed Avatar Studios, their venture with Nickelodeon to create content based around the Avatarverse. While they didn't reveal any huge updates, DiMartino did promise they were "working hard" to create the franchise, noting that "it's going to take a while before new stuff starts percolating out there."

"Mike and I have mapped out a very ambitious, multi-tiered" plan to explore "this big, rich, largely untapped history and future in the Avatar world," Konietzko explained.

"Each of these projects [has] its own feeling, its own tone and look, so it will all feel true to the Avatar world, but they will all be very different expressions of it so it will really deepen it and expand it," he added later in the podcast.

"We're coming in now and we have unprecedented support from Nickelodeon, so it is the franchise, the shows and animated stuff, but also other stuff beyond, in publishing, and in podcasts like you're doing and all that stuff," said DiMartino. "We have all the ideas and ideally we're going to get to, over the years, explore all of them and get to make them, but it'll take some time."

"If we make all this stuff, you guys will just be podcasting for about the next 20 years or so," DiMartino teased.

To that, I say: Flamey-O!

Konietzko and DiMartino having a new perspective on their work on Avatar bodes well for the projects to come. Now that the two are more aware of what they wish they could do differently, they can apply those lessons to the future shows and movies. Much of those future plans for the Avatar universe remain unclear, but fans can rest assured both men have a lot planned. At the same time, there are others who might say Avatar is perfect as it is and doesn't need any more content. It's interesting how people can have different perspectives, isn't it?

How Jack De Sena Inspired 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Creators to Change Sokka's Personality

Jack De Sena, the voice actor of Sokka, personally inspired the creators to change Sokka's personality to more match De Sena's goofy humor.

The creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender recently divulged that the character of Sokka changed quite a bit while the series was in early production. The hit Nickelodeon anime-inspired animated series originally ran from 2005–2008 and was created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. The character of Sokka was voiced by Jack De Sena (All That, 100 Things to Do Before High School)

Avatar was buoyed back into the mainstream after it was added to Netflix’s catalog in 2020 with soaring viewership. This rekindled popularity came along with new fans and a strengthened appreciation for the supporting characters of the series, one fan-favorite being Sokka. Sokka, Katara’s older brother and an original core member of Team Avatar, provided the much-needed comic relief to a series that sought to introduce serious topics such as imperialism, genocide, and totalitarianism to young kids. Sokka sported this unique blend of humor that was both bitingly sarcastic and hilariously goofy, which went well his technical genius and sense of responsibility as the eldest sibling, forming an uber-lovable character. This sense of humor, which more than made up for what Sokka felt he was lacking in the absence of bending abilities, made him a ladies-man in the series and one of the most beloved characters to fans.

On Avatar: Braving the Elements, Nickelodeon’s official Avatar: The Last Airbender podcast, Konietzko and DiMartino discussed the early stages of creating the hit series, which included a much different Sokka. While re-living the origins of Avatar with podcast hosts Janet Varney and Dante Basco—the voice actors for Korra in sequel series Legend of Korra and Avatar’s Zuko respectively—Konietzko explained how influential the other parties in the process were. One of the main influences for the final form of the characters were, of course, their voice actors—this was particularly true in the case of De Sena’s Sokka. Read Konietzko’s full quote below:

“We had thought of a slightly different personality for Sokka. He was gonna be a lot more like dry wit, you know, a lot more just kinda wry humor. But Jack…I think whacky is an appropriate word for Jack, we love Jack. You know when he auditioned we were like not only is this the person but…we tried to just set up everything so that we have our vision, we have our sort of like goal posts, but with the writers that come in and the storyboard artists and the designers and the animators and the music—you want to set it up so that everyone can inject that passion and love and idiosyncrasies and all that in there.”

It is truly hard to imagine the series with a less over-the-top, goofy Sokka, who never fails to cheer up the Gaang (and the audience) when they’ve experienced something soul-crushing. However, his sarcastic wit and lovable charm is one of the reasons why his story being the only one left with so many unanswered questions in Korra. However, Konietzko and DiMartino, who have recently created Avatar Studios at Nickelodeon, specifically dedicated to expanding the Avatar universe, can right this wrong somewhere in the multi-tiered plan they have for future Avatar projects.

While not much is known about the aforementioned Avatar projects, it is certain that the audience is there and ready to dive even deeper into the Bending World. Even though Sokka was not given, in some fans’ eyes, the closure the character deserved, anything is possible in the future of the Avatar universe. One thing that can be said with certainty, however, is Konietzko and DiMartino are dedicated to carrying out the story of the Avatar world the way they envisioned it, and not the way other studios have wanted to change it to better suit their aims. From letting the voice actors, animators, and more guide the series, to walking off of projects where they feel the story being bended against their will, Konietzko and DiMartino have proved that much.

As part of the agreement, Nordic Entertainment Group is also a partner, premiering Taylor’s Island as an exclusive Viaplay Original on their Viaplay streaming service in the Nordic and Baltic markets.

Official Queensland Government via Screen Queensland:

Fremantle Australia’s New Teen Mystery Series on the Gold Coast

Three of the writers of Taylor’s Island L-R: Alix Beane, Hannah Samuel and Marisa Nathar

3 March 2021

The Queensland Government via Screen Queensland today announced that Fremantle Australia’s brand-new teen series, Taylor’s Island (working title), will film exclusively on the Gold Coast from July this year.

Taylor’s Island (working title) follows the adventures of 14-year-old Taylor and her tight-knit group of friends as they explore the mysteries of their island home.

It features a diverse female cast anchored by Australian leads and is produced for Viacom, to broadcast on Network 10 in Australia and Nickelodeon internationally.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the production would contribute around $9 million to the local economy and support around 165 jobs which is important for our economic recovery.

“Through Screen Queensland, my government is proud to support the screen industry in Queensland because it creates local jobs,” the Premier said.

“We’ve also emerged as one of the safest places to film because of the hard work of all Queenslanders in managing the global pandemic.

“Queensland is the place to be backed up by our enviable reputation for creating high-quality children’s screen content with local production companies Ludo Studio (Bluey, The Strange Chores), Like A Photon Creative (Combat Wombat, The Wishmas Tree) and The Steve Jaggi Company (Dive Club, Swimming For Gold) garnering global recognition for our screen industry.”

Screen Queensland Chief Creative Officer Jo Dillon said Taylor’s Island is another example of exciting new Australian-made children’s content driven by strong female characters.

“It’s great to see a series about a diverse group of teenagers, led by a girl, driven by curiosity and a strong sense of adventure, and we’re proud that it’s being made on the Gold Coast.

“The lead roles will all be played by young Australian actors—an enormous step in their budding careers,” Ms Dillon said.

Chris Oliver-Taylor, Fremantle’s CEO Asia Pacific, who will Executive Produce the Series, said, “Taylor and her friends are fearless, curious and brave, driven by an insatiable thirst for solving mysteries and discovering the truth.

“Fremantle, with our producer Tim Powell, and co-producer Jonah Klein, is proud to be working on a show that is both diverse and communicates positive messages to young viewers.

“We are delighted to be working with the ViacomCBS team on this wonderful series and are thrilled to be back in Queensland,” Mr Oliver-Taylor said.

Writers include Sam Carroll (The Bureau of Magical Things), Alix Beane (Mustangs FC), David Hannam (Nowhere Boys), Marisa Nathar (Mustangs FC), Natesha Somasundaram (The Unlisted), Trent Roberts (Secret Bridesmaids’ Business) and Hannah Samuel (The PM’s Daughter).

From C21 Media:

Nickelodeon, 10 land on Taylor’s Island

ViacomCBS-owned Nickelodeon International and Australia’s Network 10 have collaborated for the first time to order a live-action children’s series about a teenager whose uncle disappears.

Fremantle Australia will produce Taylor’s Island (working title, 20×22’), which will start shooting on Queensland’s Gold Coast in July, supported by Screen Australia and Screen Queensland.

Created by Matt Cooke, Vince Lund and Michael Ford, the comedy follows 14-year-old Taylor Young as she and her friends explore the mysterious island after her uncle vanishes.

The production will contribute about A$9m (US$7m) to the local economy and support 165 jobs, according to Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

“We’ve emerged as one of the safest places to film because of the hard work of all Queenslanders in managing the global pandemic,” she said, citing shows such as Ludo Studio’s Bluey, Like A Photon Creative’s Combat Wombat and The Wishmas Tree and The Steve Jaggi Company’s Dive Club and Swimming For Gold.

Nordic Entertainment Group, which is also a partner, will offer the series as a Viaplay Original on its Viaplay streaming service in the Nordic and Baltic markets.

Jules Borkent, executive VP, kids and family at ViacomCBS Networks International, said: “This new partnership marks our first non-preschool Australian scripted live-action production for Nickelodeon channels around the world. As we continue to diversify our kids content pipeline, this is an exciting time for us to team up with ViacomCBS’s Network 10 to bring new content to kids everywhere.”

The project stemmed from talks between Borkent and Fremantle Asia Pacific CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor, who told C21: “Viacom had this great idea, created by Matt Cooke, Vince Lund and Michael Ford, and wanted to partner with someone to work the idea up into an Australian series for global release.

“So the Fremantle team, working with Rachel Davis [the executive in charge of production for Nickelodeon International in Australia], have been creating the world of Taylor’s Island from the inspiration brought to us from Matt, Vince and Michael.”

Tim Powell will produce alongside coproducer Jonah Klein. Led by script producer and writer Stephen Vagg, the writing team comprises Sam Carroll (The Bureau of Magical Things), Alix Beane (Mustangs FC), David Hannam (Nowhere Boys), Marisa Nathar (Mustangs FC), Natesha Somasundaram (The Unlisted), Trent Roberts (Secret Bridesmaids’ Business) and Hannah Samuel (The PM’s Daughter).

The diverse female cast and directors are yet to be announced.

ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand chief content officer and exec VP Beverley McGarvey said: “This new original live-action series further cements our commitment to premium children’s content.”

The news follows Nickelodeon International’s recent production partnerships in markets such as China with Deer Squad, a coproduction with iQiyi; in Israel with Spyders, Nickelodeon International’s first original coproduction with Ananey Studios; and in India with The Twisted Timeline of Sammy & Raj, its first collaboration with Viacom18.
