Takara Tomy and Studio Trigger Pay Homage to 40 Years of 'Transformers' With New Anime Film

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic Transformers franchise, and to celebrate the milestone, the official Takara Tomy YouTube channel has unveiled a full-length Transformers 40th Anniversary Special, an anime movie animated by Studio Trigger!

Transformers 40th Anniversary Special by Studio Trigger

The 2D-animated short-film is an impressive homage to the 40 years of history of the franchise from G1 to the present, including Transformers: EarthSpark, and is animated by using classic cell animation style.

For decades now, Transformers has been more than meets the eye. The franchise saw its unlikely start spark after Takara Tomy, a popular toy brand from Japan, teamed up with Hasbro in America. The cross-cultural deal brought the Transformers to life, and it did not take long for its lore to blow up. From TV shows to blockbuster movies, Transformers has done plenty during its 40-year run. And today, the IP is testing its limits with a special anime created by Studio Trigger.

The Malto family from 'Transformers: EarthSpark'.

Studio Trigger has worked in several famous anime series like Kill la Kill, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, SSSS.Gridman, and SSSS.Dynazenon, among other projects.

The director, storyboard artist, producer and animation director is Amemiya Satoshi, director of the film Gridman Universe. The video uses the song “Mayday” by popular Japanese band BUMP OF CHICKEN, released in 2007.

The IP already has ties to anime given its origins with Takara Tomy and designer Shoji Kawamori, who created the hit mech anime Macross, and his love of technology led him to design a set of toys with Takara Tomy. These toys, known as Diaclone, became the basis for Transformers with help from Hasbro. So as you can see, Transformers has a solid history with Japanese creators.

The movie arrives just as Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are about to release Transformers One, the franchise's next big project. The animated movie, which stars Chris Hemsworth, is slated to premiere in theaters on September 20. The film will take fans back in time as Transformers One focuses on the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Once allies, the two mechs are now mortal foes, and Transformers has long teased their early days on Cybertron. Soon, fans will get the chance to see that history play out, and reviews for Transformers One are nothing but positive at this time.

The anime, as you can see below, is nothing short of a love letter to Transformers. The short features all of our favorite Autobots as heroes like Optimus Prime take to the screen. Studio Trigger did not hold back with its animation here, and we have director Akira Amemiya to thank for the visual feast.

I'm sure you'll have fun catching all the cameos, characters and Easter Eggs featured on the video, including the colorful Bump Of Chicken x Transformers Optimus Prime revealed some days ago. Watch the video now below!

'One Piece' Makes Surprise Cameo in 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' - Watch

One Piece is the latest anime to sneak into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.

One Piece x Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

One Piece has spent the past few decades laying out its seafaring tale, and at this point, fans are more than invested. From its secret treasure to the fate of the Grand Line, everything is at stake in Eiichiro Oda's manga. His fans have been following Monkey D. Luffy for ages, and that includes fictional ones as well! Not long ago, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ushered the anime into its world, and the crossover is pretty much perfect.

As you can see below, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series dropped a line about One Piece in an episode. The clip finds Leatherhead (voiced by Rose Byrne) and Wingnut (voiced by Natasia Demetriou) working together to disarm a bomb, and it is safe to say things are going poorly. Despite their best tries, the two only manage to speed up the bomb's countdown, and it forces one of them to recount their top regrets in life.

"This is how it ends," Wingnut admits. "There's so much I didn't do. I'll never finish One Piece!"

Of course, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lets the friends live, but the panic experienced here is hardcore relatable. One Piece has been going on for nearly 30 years at this point. For fans who have followed the Shonen Jump title since day one, well – they have aged quite a bit. It has become a joke amongst fans that some will pass away before One Piece is finished, leaving them to speculate about the series in the afterlife. However, it should be stressed that Oda does have the manga's endgame in mind.

Not only has Oda informed a select few about his ending for One Piece, but the manga has kickstarted its final saga. The series still has a number of arcs left to lay out, but every so slowly, the Straw Hat crew is nearing its last run. So if you want to catch up on One Piece, you can find it on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app.

As for TMNT, fans can stream Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season one right now on Paramount+. The 2D-animated series tales place in between last year's blockbuster movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and its upcoming sequel, currently slated for release on October 9, 2026.

The Heroes in a Half Shell will also be teaming up with Naruto in an upcoming comic book series.

What do you think about this One Piece cameo?

From JBox:

GX (2004-2008), Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s (2008-2011), Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal (2011-2014), Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V (2014-2017, disponível legendado na Netflix), Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains (2017-2019, disponível na Crunchyroll) e Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens (2020-2022) e Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!

É hora do duelo!

Pluto TV Spain Adds 'Detective Conan' Channel

Nick News Brief: Pluto TV Spain (España) has added a channel dedicated to the hit anime series Detective Conan. The channel launched on July 1, and broadcasts episodes of Detective Conan, based on hit manga series, 24/7.

How 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Creator Dave Filoni Helped Inspire 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have revealed that Dave Filoni help inspire the show in a big way.

Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have revealed that Star Wars: The Clone Wars creator Dave Filoni was partially responsible for the creation of the show! Filoni worked as a director on the first season of Avatar before moving on to other projects, having met Konietzko and DiMartino while working in animation in the late 1990s. However, it seems that Filoni’s impact on the world of Avatar goes back even farther than his work on the original show.

It’s no secret that Avatar is heavily inspired by Japanese anime, particularly the films of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki. The show’s animation style and many of its narrative elements pull directly from anime, and Avatar and The Legend of Korra both employed Korean animation studios during their production. According to Konietzko and DiMartino, however, that anime influence might not have been as strong if not for Filoni.

Speaking recently on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, the creators discussed their early days working in animation in Los Angeles and the process by which they created Avatar. Konietzko explained that he was a huge fan of anime growing up, but that he fell off it as a young adult due to some series’ more violent and misogynistic tendencies. Filoni helped him get back into anime, however, helping lead to the creation of Avatar. Read Konietzko’s full quote below.

“My own relationship with anime was like, there was stuff that really blew me away when I was younger, and then in college I just saw a bunch of stuff that I saw that was just really misogynistic and like, gratuitously violent, for no reason, and especially when those two were paired I was like, ‘I have no interest in this stuff. None.’ I’d just go watch an early ‘90s Jet Li kung fu movie instead or something. But it was working on [Invader] Zim, and Dave Filoni introducing us, kind of reintroducing me to Miyazaki stuff. I had seen stuff as a kid, didn’t know who made it, and then Filoni turned us onto that, and then it was like seeing Cowboy Bebop and FLCL and just going, ‘oh.’ And I’m someone who’s always looking at the top of the mountain, how can I get up there, you know? And that mountain being not success, it’s being a creative, you know this thing, how do we get up there, and I’m looking up there, and Cowboy Bebop and FLCL are way up the mountain, and I’m like, we’re down here.”

Princess Mononoke

It’s likely that, working in animation in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Konietzko and DiMartino would have eventually come across Miyazaki’s work even without Filoni’s help, but it’s fun to learn some more about how Avatar came to be. All three have gone on to do incredible things in the field of modern animation, with Filoni’s Clone Wars now regarded as some of the best Star Wars media ever made. It’s a shame that Filoni left Airbender after just one season, but his contributions at Lucasfilm certainly make up for what he could have continued to make at Nickelodeon.

Konietzko and DiMartino’s new Avatar Studios are currently working on a number of different projects set in the Avatar universe, which the creators have said will all embrace different visual and narrative styles. That could mean even more of the duo’s shared love of classic anime will enter into Avatar in the future, fleshing out the world of the franchise in new and stylish ways. Without the intervention of Filoni, however, it sounds like Avatar: The Last Airbender may not have been quite the same.

Viral Video Recreates One Piece's Epic Luffy Fight with SpongeBob Twist

When it comes to One Piece, fans have a solid list in mind when it comes to their favorite fights. Luffy has had quite a few fights in his time, but not all of his skirmish rank the same. You can imagine that his bigger battles have more fans backing them, and one such fan decided to take Luffy's epic battle with Doflamingo to the next level.

Or rather, take it under the sea. After all, one animator decided to take the One Piece battle and combine it with Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants. This means everyone's favorite cartoon sponge was able to live the life of a Straw Hat, and the video proves the hero thrives under pressure.

You can check out the video here which 动画成君 posted to Bilibili, a popular social media site amongst Chinese and Taiwanese netizens. It was there they brought SpongeBob to life in One Piece, and the Krusty Krabs employee was scouted to play Luffy.

The hilarious scene is a near one-to-one recreation of the battle that actually took place in One Piece. Squidward stands in for Doflamingo, and he looks absolutely hilarious in a pink feathered coat. As for SpongeBob, he takes his place as captain seriously, and he embraces Luffy's Gear transformations. And while the video's premise is absolutely absurd, the animation is not. There is no doubt the animator spent time on this piece, and you can check out their full Bilibili profile here.

Obviously, this kind of crossover happens once in a lifetime, but this isn't the first time SpongeBob has dipped his toes into the world of anime. A very famous webseries has posted anime-influenced openings for the Nickelodeon cartoon, and its first full episode trending globally with anime lovers earlier this year. In fact, this isn't even SpongeBob's first crossover with One Piece!

What do you make of this wild crossover? Does SpongeBob do Luffy justice, or should they have made Patrick play the captain? Share your thoughts with me in the comments section below!
