The co-creators of Blue's Clues have revealed that there were once plans to give a beloved character their own spin-off!
Angela Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson, the co-creators of Blue's Clues, have revealed that they once planned to give a much-loved character from Nickelodeon's beloved preschool series their own spin-off!
Speaking to original Blue's Clues host Steve Burns on his Alive podcast, Santomero and Johnson shared that Blue's BFF, Magenta, nearly had her own spin-off! Unfortunately, Nickelodeon ultimately wasn't interested in making a Magenta spin-off and passed on the idea.
However, the decision to pass on the Magenta spin-off allowed the co-creators to pivot to working on the puppet-based spin-off, Blue's Room, which, Santomero explains in the podcast, came about as kids wanted to hug and speak to Blue.
The original Blue’s Clues series launched in Sept. 8, 1996 and ran for six groundbreaking seasons. Created by Traci Paige Johnson, Todd Kessler, and Angela C. Santomero, Blue’s Clues drew acclaim and high ratings for its unique interactivity that helped change the way kids watch television and has remained one of the most popular preschool shows of all time. The landmark series also raised the bar in preschool television by exploring advanced subject matter such as sign language, geography, physics, emotions, and anatomy. The series spawned the live-action spin-off series, Blue's Room, and in 2019, was rebooted as Blue's Clues & You!.

Behind the Blue Curtain: A Peek Into the Making of Blue's Clues and Its Legacy | Alive with Steve Burns
Angela Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson, the creative forces behind Blue’s Clues, join Steve to go deep behind the scenes to share never before heard stories.
Why did they cast Steve.
How the show almost didn’t make it to air.
The Magenta spinoff you never heard about.
They also discuss why pauses mattered more than punchlines, how Mr. Rogers directly shaped the show’s DNA, and the risk of telling preschoolers, “You can do anything that you want to do.” It’s a deep dive into how it all happened and why the show's impact still resonates decades later.
There are a thousand podcasts you can listen to. This one listens back.
Alive with Steve Burns continues the conversation you began all those years ago. Back then it was letters and numbers and graham crackers. Now it’s death, sex, taxes, and all the big, messy questions of being alive. Why does money stress us out? Is the American dream dead? What’s the future of truth?
Each week, a new guest drops by Steve’s window for a genuine and respectful dialogue between two people just trying to figure it out, together.
Funny, tender, and just a little weird, this show invites you to sit down and think with Steve once again and wonder… what it really means to be Alive.
