Viacom Files Lawsuit Against MGA Entertainment Over Financing Of Nickelodeon's "Lalaloopsy" Series

Viacom has filed a lawsuit against MGA Entertainment over financing of the "Lalaloopsy" animated preschool series, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

In a lawsuit filed on Monday 14th December 2015, Viacom says that it has lived up to its end of the partnership by contributing US$5.2 million for a TV series based on MGA Entertainment's line of Lalaloopsy dolls, but that MGA has failed to deliver US$3.5 million on its end.

The complaint was filed in California federal court and claims MGA, best known for the Bratz doll line, has breached it's contract with Viacom.

Viacom, which often partners with toy companies, says it arrived at a co-finance agreement with MGA in 2012. Afterwards, Viacom launched the animated "Lalaloopsy" television series on Nickelodeon and broadcast 52 episodes on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels worldwide.

The terms of the deal had MGA paying US$9 million in three installments — $2 million in year one, $3 million in year two and $4 million in year three. Viacom says it is missing most of the final year's payment.

Late last month, MGA made a $500,000 minimum guarantee payment. "However, MGA has failed to pay the remaining US$3.5 million to Viacom that is due under the Co-Finance Agreement," adds the complaint.

Represented by attorney Richard Kendall, Viacom is now seeking damages. MGA hasn't yet responded.

The half-hour Peter Rabbit special will premiere at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), followed by the series launch of Lalaloopsy at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT). Peter Rabbit airs regularly weekdays at 12 p.m. (ET/PT) and Lalaloopsy will air regularly weekdays at 1:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Peter Rabbit is a fresh re-imagining of the popular Beatrix Potter children’s books based on Peter Rabbit, which have sold over 250 million copies worldwide and been translated into 35 languages. The series features educational goals that encourage preschoolers to learn problem-solving and interpersonal skills, self-efficacy, resilience, positive re-framing and fostering an interest in and respect for nature. In the Peter Rabbit special, “The Tale of the Start of Spring,” Jemima’s new egg goes missing and only Peter Rabbit is able to put together the clues in order to find the culprit. But can he find the egg before it hatches, or has he finally met his match in the devious newcomer, Samuel Whiskers?

Lalaloopsy is an animated series based on the award-winning, best-selling Lalaloopsy line that celebrates diversity, friendship and teamwork. The series stars the Lalaloopsy rag dolls — Crumbs Sugar Cookie, Mittens Fluff ‘n Stuff, Bea Spells-a-Lot, Rosy Bumps ‘N’ Bruises, Jewel Sparkles, Peanut Big Top, Spot Splatter Splash, and Dot Starlight – who magically came to life when their last stitch was sewn. Each character has their own personality based on the fabrics that were used to make them and a special pet. In the series premiere, “Batter Up!,” Berry Jars ‘n’ Jam tries to break the Lalaloopsy Land record for tallest stack of pancakes built in one day. She initially tries to do it by herself but, soon overwhelmed by the enormity of the task, turns to her Lalaloopsy friends who are happy to help.

At NickJr.com, Nickelodeon’s award-winning website, kids and parents can watch a sneak peek of the Peter Rabbit special and print out Peter Rabbit spring-themed activities including a coloring page and crafts. Beginning in April, preschoolers will be able to play the new online game “Peter Rabbit’s Downhill Dash.” Parents and kids can visit the new Lalaloopsy show page to meet the Lalaloopsy characters and watch exclusive webisodes. Plus, they can print out Lalaloopsy activities including a coloring pack, mazes, and puppets.
