Halo TV Series Includes 'SpongeBob' Easter Egg

SpongeBob SquarePants is given a small shout-out in the latest episode of Paramount Plus' Halo TV series as a fun bit of franchise synergy.

The new Halo TV series gave a small nod to SpongeBob SquarePants in its second episode.
With three episodes now out in the wild, audiences have been keenly analyzing Paramount Plus' new Halo series for any Easter eggs hidden in the show thus far. The show has already given a nod to Mass Effect, another popular sci-fi gaming series, by squeezing in a subtle reference to the original trilogy's player character, Commander Shepard. Another Easter egg has been found, highlighting a bit of corporate and platform synergy by giving a wink and a nod to animation's most popular sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants.

The Halo TV series, as with the games, follows Master Chief as he and humanity are amid an intergalactic war with a destructive and mysterious alien coalition known as The Covenant. While several major characters and elements from the games are adapted to the show, including Dr. Halsey and Cortana, the series takes place in what is referred to as the "Silver Timeline" and exists separate from the more familiar timeline seen in the games. The show has been met with mixed to positive reviews thus far and was already renewed for a second season before its March 2022 series premiere.

As mentioned above, the newest Easter egg eagle-eyed viewers found in the show was in the series' second episode, "Unbound." Hiddentvdetails shared the Easter egg on TikTok, which can be seen when Master Chief and Kwan meet the crazed hermit and former Covenant prisoner Reth. The little detail hidden on Reth's table is a small model shaped distinctly like Squidward's Easter Island Head home in Bikini Bottom.

The Easter egg is a fun nod to Nickelodeon's favorite animated, aquatic sponge and makes sense given its presence on Paramount Plus since it launched. SpongeBob SquarePants has been front-and-center in plenty of marketing for the streaming service to entice parents whose kids enjoy the misadventures of the titular sponge and his friends.

It is also possible this won't be the last easter egg to SpongeBob and his colorful cast of underwater friends seen in the Halo TV series. SpongeBob SquarePants has been on the air since 1999, running for well over 20 years with roughly 270 episodes, three feature films and two spin-offs - with even more on the way - in that time. With all this history to pull from, Halo's writers and production team have a proverbial gold mine of Easter eggs they could dot the show with for the rest of its first season and all over season two. Whether they actually drop in more SpongeBob SquarePants Easter eggs, though, remains to be seen.

Halo is currently available to stream on Paramount Plus with new episodes releasing every Thursday.
