SpongeBob SquarePants' Patrick Star Was Originally Going To Be a Totally Different Starfish

Patrick Star, the lovably dim-witted starfish of SpongeBob SquarePants fame, was originally going to be a much different character than the one fans meet in Stephen Hillenburg's Nickelodeon classic.

Patrick Star has been known to become volatile on a number of occasions: When he couldn't see his forehead, when his Valentine's Day present was late, and that time someone ordering lunch referred to him as a "Krusty Krab." But, on the whole, SpongeBob SquarePants’ best friend is a lovable and loyal oaf whose dim-wittedness can be perfectly summed up by the fact that he literally lives under a rock.

Now, imagine a version of SpongeBob SquarePants where Patrick (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke) was mean and bitter all the time.

SpongeBob SquarePants' Patrick Star was originally developed as a bully

Believe it or not, the iconic character was "really mad about being pink" early on in the show's development, according to Tracey Miller-Zarneke's SpongeBob SquarePants: The Art of an Undersea World.

His displeasure over being associated with a traditionally feminine color meant the starfish came off as "a macho bully, because he had this chip on his figurative shoulder about his appearance."

Thankfully, the creators did not go in that direction and Patrick became the delightful doofus known for his love of eating Krabby Patties at three in the morning, TV comedies where someone gets hit in the head with a coconut (or two), and the field devoted to the study of "Wumbo" (a.k.a. Wumbology).

"We often play him to be beyond dumb—psychedelically dumb," explained longtime SpongeBob writer Kaz (first name only). "We take a given situation and carry it to its illogical conclusion."

His naive stupidity interplays beautifully with SpongeBob's naive optimism and Squidward's jaded cynicism. Giving him an irascible persona would have felt redundant with Squidward Tentpoles living next door. Sorry, I meant Squidward Tortellini.

Of course, Patrick is no stranger to bullies, having befriended the butt-kicking flounder named Flats during their college years (a piece of information revealed in the aptly-named episode "The Bully"). What's more, Patrick showed a proficiency for kicking butts (specifically his own) in "No Weenies Allowed," when he and SpongeBob staged a fake fight so the latter could gain entry to the Salty Spittoon.

"I've been playing characters of 'questionable' intelligence, I guess, most of my life—and this was another one!" Fagerbakke remarked in a 2024 interview with BuzzFeed. "Being able to do it this long, I've been able to find so many different shades of the character, and obviously, that's been delightful. One doesn't want to just do the same beats over and over. That certainly has not been the case with Patrick."

'Zoey 101' Set to Leave Netflix In June 2026

For anyone who grew up on early 2000s Nickelodeon, this is one of those streaming updates that hits a little harder than expected. Zoey 101 is officially set to leave Netflix this June, and that means fans are running out of time to revisit one of Nickelodeon's most iconic teen sitcoms of its era.

Zoey 101

The departure is part of Netflix’s ongoing rotation of licensed titles, where shows and movies come and go as streaming rights expire. While that’s nothing new for subscribers, it still stings when a nostalgic favorite departs, especially one as culturally embedded in 2000s pop TV history as Zoey 101.

So, what is the exact Netflix departure date? Sadly, fans will have to bid farewell to Zoey 101 on the platform on Sunday, June 21, 2026. That's when the first two seasons will leave Netflix, and the streaming giant recently confirmed this bad news in a new press release. What this means is that the last day to watch the teen series on the platform is Saturday, June 20. That's something to keep in mind!

Although Zoey 101 consists of four seasons, Netflix never actually carried the complete series in its entirety. The first two seasons were added to the platform back in June 2022, and fans were hoping that the last two installments would eventually make their way to the platform as well. However, that never happened, leaving viewers with only a partial look at the series’ full run at Pacific Coast Academy (PCA).

With Zoey 101 seasons 1 and 2 leaving Netflix this June, it's strongly doubtful that the streamer is about to license the remaining seasons at this point. That said, fans will have to continue to look elsewhere if they want to experience the full story of Zoey 101 from start to finish. Of course, the best option is to watch it on Paramount+. That's where all four seasons of Zoey 101, along with the recent revival movie, Zoey 102, are currently streaming. The series is also available to stream for free, including as a boxset, on Pluto TV.

There's also the option to purchase individual episodes or entire seasons through digital platforms. But ultimately, it's up to you!

Originally created by Dan Schneider, Zoey 101 premiered in 2005 and quickly became one of Nickelodeon's most popular live-action series. It followed Zoey Brooks (Jamie Lynn Spears) as she attends Pacific Coast Academy (PCA), a fictional boarding school in Southern California.

Unlike most teen sitcoms of its time, Zoey 101 stood out for its unique setting. The show was set on a picturesque coastal campus that made it feel almost like a teenage fantasy. This iconic setting also helped make PCA feel like a place viewers genuinely wished they could attend!

Even years after its original run ended in 2008, Zoey 101 has maintained a strong nostalgic following. A big part of that comes from its relatable coming-of-age themes. For four seasons, viewers watched Zoey and her friends juggle everything from crushes and jealousy to personal growth and shifting friendships. You know, the kind of experiences that remain universal for viewers watching it today.

The show also introduced a memorable ensemble cast of characters that fans still talk about, like Zoey, Chase, Dustin, Michael, Quinn, Logan, Nicole, etc. Besides Spears, the Zoey 101 cast included Paul Butcher, Sean Flynn, Kristin Herrera, Christopher Massey, Alexa Nikolas, Erin Sanders, Matthew Underwood, Victoria Justice, Austin Butler, and others.

In August 2023, Paramount+ debuted the Original movie Zoey 102, in which the Pacific Coast Academy alumni return to Malibu for an over-the-top wedding that turns into a high school reunion for the books.

It's going to be a sad day when Zoey 101 finally departs Netflix. However, at least we know it'll still be available to stream elsewhere!

Keke Palmer Reveals Whether She'd Ever Do a 'True Jackson, VP' Revival

Palmer played the titular character on Nickelodeon's True Jackson, VP from 2008 to 2011

Keke Palmer is opening up about whether she'd like to revisit one of her earliest roles: True Jackson.

Palmer, 32, played the titular character on Nickelodeon's True Jackson, VP from 2008 to 2011. In the show, Palmer played a savvy teenager hired to serve as the vice president of Youth Apparel at a fictional fashion company called "Mad Style."

The actor spoke to Parade for a recent interview that touched on another Disney Channel star, Miley Cyrus, who recently revisited her own childhood character in the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special.

Cast of 'True Jackson, VP'

Asked if Palmer would like to revisit True, the actor responded, "Oh yeah. I'm one of those people that started acting as a kid that really still loves my kid work. Not everything I can revisit because maybe there's not a story there—but in terms of looking back, I have no shame."

Elsewhere in the interview, Palmer speculated on what the character would be up to in 2026, saying True is now "probably the head of Mad Style."

"She is curating spaces, and she's being just the boss like she really became," Palmer added. "She understands what she gave up in her years of being focused as a career woman and building this legacy for herself, so she's now dealing with having to go back and understand the spaces in which she was not cultivating—whether that's love or friendships or just things that started to run when you're out there chasing your dream and being ambitious. She's going to revisit that part of herself that she kept deferring."

Palmer currently stars in the film, I Love Boosters, which she said in another recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter reminded her of her turn as True.

But there was one big difference — that the villain in I Love Boosters, played by Demi Moore, is worlds different than the character of Max Madigan (the CEO of Mad Style, played by Greg Proops) in True Jackson.

“The whole [Moore's character] Christie Smith, she was not a nice Max Madigan OK, she was not!” Palmer told THR.

Iconic MTV Show Returns to Paramount+ With Restored Original Episodes

JACKASS RETURNS TO PARAMOUNT+

Stream Restored Original Episodes From Seasons 1-3 Now

Skull on Crutches

May 21, 2026 - Jackass is back in all its chaotic glory. Seasons 1-3 return to Paramount+ today in restored original versions - bringing fans closer than ever to the episodes as they first aired, or were originally intended to air, by Johnny Knoxville and the original creative team. Start streaming today at ParamountPlus.com.

  • At the request of the Jackass creators, Seasons 1-3 were temporarily removed from Paramount+ at the end of 2025 so the production team could revisit and restore key creative elements that had been altered over time. The refreshed episodes now reflect the original vision from when the groundbreaking franchise first launched 25 years ago.
  • "In the time since the release of Jackass 26 years ago, the television episodes had been re-edited, re-sequenced, and re-scored to the point they were unrecognizable. I found this out the hard way last year when attempting to watch them. Eeek! But kudos to Paramount for giving us the $$ to restore the shows to how they initially aired in the first place. We can't wait until you see all the terrible things we did to each other way back then and in the manner we intended!" - Johnny Knoxville
  • Fans can now stream the definitive versions of Seasons 1-3 only on Paramount+, restored with the chaos, stunts, pranks and irreverent spirit that helped redefine a generation of comedy. Restored original episodes are currently available to U.S. Paramount+ subscribers, with additional regions rolling out in the coming weeks.
  • The relaunch arrives just ahead of the upcoming Paramount Pictures theatrical release Jackass: Best and Last, hitting theaters June 26. Consider this your warm-up.
  • Led by Johnny Knoxville and a fearless crew of collaborators, Jackass became a cultural phenomenon through its outrageous stunts, DIY spirit and unapologetic absurdity - leaving a lasting mark on comedy, reality television and pop culture.
