Mike DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko Reveal How Aang and Appa Survived Being In a Iceberg For 100 Years In 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

How did Aang and Appa survive those 100 years in the iceberg? Were they frozen in some kind of suspended animation? Well, Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Mike DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko have revealed how they survived!

It turns out that Aang and Appa aren't actually frozen in the iceberg! Their survival, in fact, came from a powerful burst of Raava's spirit energy that protected the Avatar and his companion within the iceberg for 100 years without aging them a day. When Katara breaks the iceberg, the Raava energy escapes, shooting into the sky and creating that huge beam of light the that Prince Zuko sees.

You might also notice that Aang and Appa don't thaw out in the scene, they just land at the bottom of the iceberg completely dry and back to their normal eating, sleeping and aging selves.
