TMNT Creator Shares Secret To Making Comics Your Life
Recently in San Diego for Comic-Con 2017, Kevin Eastman, the co-creator of one of the most creative comic franchises, stopped by the CBS News 8 studio to inspire comic lovers to turn their passion into a career!
Kevin Eastman and his collaborator Peter Laird were thinking one day: “What ironic animal would we make Bruce Lee into if he were a comic character?” Naturally, considering Lee’s mega strength and lightning-like agility, a turtle was the perfect match. Next thing they knew, Eastman had a sketch of a turtle in fighting stance brandishing nunchucks Michelangelo was born!
Eastman and Laird self published a little more than 3,000 copies of the 40-page Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in May of 1984. By September, 1985, it received 3 additional printings.
The first TMNT animated came in 1987 and ran for 10 years, the gang’s first action figures rolled out in 1988, and the franchise’s first live-action movie came in 1990, which to this day, is the second highest grossing independent film of all time. 30 years later, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still going strong, with a animated series on Nickelodeon, and a second one set to debut on the network in 2018.
With all that said, you trust a guy like Eastman when he gives advice on how to make a living in the comic book industry.
One piece of advice from the sensei: don’t be afraid to be different. Eastman said that the idea of TMNT was so different that it helped draw comic readers’ attention. He shared some more tips with the News 8 Morning Extra crew.

Power Rangers Trade In Zords For Cars In Slick New "Cosmic Drift" Teaser
If you've ever wanted to see the Power Rangers trade in their Zords for souped-up cars, then you've come to the right place!
The talented team at Baller Status created a new short film for Formula Drift called "Cosmic Drift", and the first teaser for it looks pretty amazing. The Power Rangers find themselves in decked out rides with Ranger-appropriate paint jobs as they drift through the streets.
Just seeing those cars race around the track wouldn't be enough though, so the team went a step further and pitted the Rangers against two monster creations that look straight out of Finster's playbook, with the Ranger vehicles having to dodge incoming fire as they race to save the captured civilians. Even Zordon makes an appearance, utilizing footage from his Mighty Morphin days.
The full film debuted at the Formula Drift event at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday 5th August 2017 in Monroe, Washington, and check out the full teaser above!
