Nickelodeon’s Newest Showrunner Is A Treasure Trove Of Ideas | Capitán Calavera

With a newly greenlit original animated series underway, Niki Lopez talks about her journey from intern to showrunner at the kidcaster.

Having spent a mere eight years at Nickelodeon — working her way up from an intern to a production assistant to a color stylist — Niki Lopez is now taking the helm on her first original animated series The Swashbuckling Adventures of Capitán Calavera (working title) for the kids' network.

Announced at Nickelodeon’s Upfront 2018 Presentation in March, the 20-episode CG-animated action-adventure preschool series will follow the treasure-hunting adventures of Robi Montes, a 8-year-old brave and kind-hearted pirate, as he embarks on daring rescues, searches for treasures and keeps the high seas safe from villains like the nefarious pirate Bonnie Bones in a fanciful Caribbean world. Lopez, the showrunner, created the series alongside Leslie Valdes and Valerie Walsh Valdes (Dora the Explorer), both of whom are serving as executive producers. The interactive series will be infused with a Spanish-language and culture curriculum.

“For me, animation has always been my North Star,” Lopez told Kidscreen's Mike Drach. “Ever since I was little, I always needed to find a pad of paper, and I didn’t know it at the time, but I was storyboarding, creating these characters and their backstories—I wanted to create a world.”

Growing up in Puerto Rico, Lopez, who was recently named as one of Variety's 2018 10 Animators to Watch, felt she had to head to the United States if she wanted to make it in animation. She got on board with Nickelodeon after being accepted to its 2010 summer internship program where she was able to work on Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness as a production intern. After completing the three-month internship, she was hired on as a full-time production assistant.

“I thought, I’ve got my foot in the door, now let me show them what I’ve got so they don’t feel like they can let go of me,” says Lopez.

During her time on Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness — and later on as a color stylist for Fairly OddParents and Harvey Beaks — Lopez worked to build relationships and acquaint herself with every aspect of the production pipeline. Her imagination brimming with original show ideas, Lopez began pitching to Nick’s preschool development team. Her first few ideas were turned down, but with feedback she worked to develop a series that included a strong curriculum and play pattern—both crucial aspects of what Nick was seeking.

While Lopez was able to create something that fit the kidcaster’s style and needs, Calavera also represents aspects of her personal history (including the show’s Spanish-language curriculum).

“Coming from a Latina background, representation is of the utmost importance to me, as well as pushing forth ideas of empathy and inclusivity,” she says. “The thing I remember fondly about my childhood back home was going on trips to the rainforest and imagining this wondrous, fantastical world and thinking of treasure hunts or mythical characters. I love the idea of planting these wonderful little nuggets and germinating them into something epic for kids.”

The Spanish-language lessons embedded in the series were also a no-brainer for Lopez’s co-creators Leslie Valdes and Valerie Walsh Valdes, having co-created Dora the Explorer. Now while Lopez is working out of Nickelodeon’s Burbank studio, the other two frequently call her from New York where they’re working with the writing team to discuss aspects of the story. The whole thing has been a dream come true for Lopez.

“They’re like my fairy godparents,” says Lopez. “They’ll help me with any tasks I might have on my side, and they definitely provide their own bounty of wonderful expertise. They’ve helped expand this world into something greater than I would have originally imagined.”

Visually, the series is also getting a boost from art director Jang Chol Lee (Big Hero 6, Wreck-It Ralph) and though it’s still early days, Lopez is happy with how it’s turning out. “The world feels so lush and vivid, like you almost want to live there,” she says.

Having climbed up the kidcaster ladder, Lopez wants to help others follow in her footsteps. There’s no treasure map leading to showrunner success, but she emphasizes the importance of taking the time to understand your audience and never being defeated by rejection.

“I know for certain that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for all those other failed pitches. They allowed me to improve and see those areas where I was lacking,” says Lopez. “I would say that if anybody has an idea they want to pitch, do as much research as possible, that’s part of the adventure.”

Nickelodeon Netherlands And Jantje Beton To Hold Buitenspeeldag 2018 On Wednesday 13th June 2018 [Updated]

Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) has announced the exciting news that they have partnered with Jantje Beton, an organisation dedicated to providing youth services, to hold the 11th edition of Buitenspeeldag, Nickelodeon Nederland's localised version of Nickelodeon's "Worldwide Day of Play", on Wednesday 13th June 2018!

For Buitenspeeldag 2018, Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton are inviting everyone to help make the Netherlands one big playground, and to organise and register activities on Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton's giant map, so that thousands of children across the Netherlands can go outside and play, whether in a garden, in a park or at a playground!

On Wednesday 13th June 2018, games will be anything but boring or unsafe. Throughout the Netherlands, streets will be closed and places will be transformed into giant playgrounds so that children can enjoy a day of fun and games with friends!

Nickelodeon will commemorate its 11th annual Buitenspeeldag celebration when the network will once again suspend programming across Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. between 13.00 and 17.00 in order to encourage kids to go outside and get active.

Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton are calling on municipalities, parents and caregivers, playgrounds, schools, youth clubs, youth organisations and associations to help turn the Netherlands into one of the biggest playgrounds on the planet by organising tons of fun activities for kids! Activities can then be submitted to be placed on Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton's Buitenspeeldag 2018 map at www.jantjebeton.nl/buitenspeeldag! At the time post publishing, more than 1150 schools, companies, neighbourhood associations, parents, municipalities and children have reported an activity, allowing a record number of more than 115,000 children to be able to play outside.

On the day, Nickelodeon presenter Nienke van Dijk will host a special Buitenspeeldag event in Amsterdam, where kids can play football and have their photos taken with their favourite characters from PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Buitenspeeldag 2018 aims to get kids to go outside and play. Studies have found that 1 in 5 children doesn't play outside, or plays outside only one day a week, which is quite alarming. That is why Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton are organising Buitenspeeldag 2018, to help kids experience how massively fun it is to explore the world outside.

Outside is also the place kids can charge up their energy or wear themselves out. Outside play is not only fun, but is also essential for physical, mental and social development. Playing is important for kids, however, it is something that isn't taught enough in the current, performance-oriented society.

Whether it's an activity for a street, a school or a whole neighbourhood. Every activity is welcome! Visit www.jantjebeton.nl/buitenspeeldag for more information about Buitenspeeldag 2018, to sign up and add your activity to the Buitenspeeldag 2018 map, tips on how to organise (including how to get permits to close roads) and promote your activity, promotional material, and fun activity ideas! From obstacle courses and old Dutch games, to the best clothes to wear whilst playing in the water, under the sun or in the rain. On Buitenspeeldag 2018, everything is possible!

The news follows Nickelodeon Belgium (België; Flanders) hosting the Belgium edition of Buitenspeeldag 2018 on Wednesday 18th April 2018. Nickelodeon will be partnering with the Flemish Government again next year to host Buitenspeeldag 2019 on Wednesday 24th April 2018, and are looking for people to organise and register activities!
