Nickelodeon UK, United Utilities And Southern Water's Water Efficiency Initiative, Gabi The Rapping Camel, Hailed A Success

The official website of the British national daily newspaper 'The Guardian' is reporting the very exciting Nickelodeon UK News in the following sustainability case study into sustainable businesses that Nickelodeon UK, United Utilities And Southern Water's award-winning "Gabi The Rapping Camel" water efficiency initiative, has been hailed a success, with the water saving campaign helping to save the UK 540 million litres of water a year since it started in 2012!

GabiH2O is a London-based eco-brand which campaigns to promote water efficiency to children across the UK, which includes Gabi the Rapping Water-Saving Camel, who appears in GabiH2O's water-saving initiative interstitials on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland, NickToons UK & Eire, and a dedicated campaign website on Nick UK's official website, Nick.co.uk:

Gabi, a water-conserving camel, was at the centre of a national campaign that has captured the imagination of children and saved the UK 540m litres of water a year.

The character came to life in educational spots on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons TV, rapping to promote water use.

A bespoke website featured videos, downloads, games and goodies for kids while an educational campaign in partnership with Eco Schools, Southern Water and United Utilities reached a million children in 29,000 schools.

The approach was developed by GabiH2O in association with the UK's leading authority on water efficiency, Waterwise, and Nickelodeon UK, along with major sponsors from the water industry.

Waterwise also lent support to the development of GabiH2O's range of water-saving devices – including a shower head that delivers an optimum flow of 7.6 litres per minute as opposed to the more common 12, 15 or even 25 litres.

Gabi the camel is the UK's first animated character dedicated to educating children about environmental stewardship.

The challenge for GabiH2O's founder, Avi Djanogly, was how to bring about lifestyle change on a mass scale. It was decided that spurring behaviour change among children would not only form better life-long habits, it would create "pester power" and encourage parents to get involved too.

A series of 30 and 60-second educational advertorials featured Gabi encouraging things like switching off taps while brushing one's teeth, taking a five-minute shower instead of a bath or using leftover water to water plants.

Online competitions offered prizes including a singing toothbrush, activity books and trump cards; and schools – through the children's newspaper First News – were able to stage a Save Water competition backed by posters and a lesson plan.

Waterwise provided advice on the development of schools materials and the company's commercial water and energy saving kits. The latter were made available via a major online retailer, enabling customers in an average family home to save up to £238 a year on utility bills and reduce CO2 emissions.

GabiH2O reached 5.5 million TV viewers a month during the campaign, distributed more than 50,000 trump cards, received 315,000 online page views and more than 38,000 game plays and downloads.

The campaign on TV and in schools saved a further 175 million litres, proving the power of creative animation in sustainability education.

Introduced in May 2012, the "we oughta save water" campaign aired as the UK faced its worst drought in 36 years and at a time when every UK citizen uses, on average, 150 litres of water a day.

Pupils At A Shoreham School Win Southern Water's Recent Water Efficiency Competition With The Help Of GabiH2O

The British regional newspaper the West Sussex Gazette is reporting the news in the following article that a class at a Shoreham school recently won a trip to Drusillas Park, Animal Zoo and Adventure Park in Alfriston after beating 45 schools in Southern Water's water efficiency competition!

Schools taking part in the contest were provided with a lesson plan and posters to form an interactive session in the classroom, fulfilling part of the National Curriculum in a fun way. The plan was produced with the help of GabiH2O, a London-based eco-brand which campaigns to promote water efficiency to children across the UK, which includes Gabi the Rapping Water-Saving Camel, who appears in GabiH2O's water-saving initiative interstitials on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland and a dedicated campaign website on Nick UK's official website, Nick.co.uk:
Wise owls win a trip to zoo

WISE owls from a Shoreham school won a trip to the zoo after beating 45 schools in a water efficiency competition.

Children from the owls class at Buckingham Park Primary School beat schools from Sussex and Kent in the Southern Water competition.

The goal was to learn about the importance of saving water and the children were taught simple habits, such as switching off the tap when brushing their teeth.

They also had to set up an investigation to demonstrate the water cycle and prove their understanding of evaporation, condensation and conservation.

Teacher Verity White said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the programme, especially setting up the investigation, which involved using Clingfilm, a kettle, weights, a bowl, a mug and a rubber band.”

Geoff Loader, Southern Water’s director of communications, went along to the Buckingham Road school last Monday to present the children with their prize of an outing to Drusillas Park in Alfriston.

“This is a great success for the children in Owls Class,” he said.

“They have worked hard to beat more than 1,300 other children to win this competition. I hope they enjoy their day out at the zoo.”

Nickelodeon UK, United Utilities And Southern Water's Water Efficiency Initiative, Gabi The Rapping Camel, Wins Award At The UK Green Apple Environment Awards 2012!

From Rochdale Online:
Water-efficient camel soaks up two awards for united utilities

A rapping water-efficient camel has helped water company United Utilities scoop two top awards.

Gabi H20 - a character devised by TV Network Nickelodeon, with backing from United Utilities and Southern Water - is the UK's first on-air animated character dedicated to educating children about water efficiency.

Since May, an estimated 5.5 million children and 1.6 million parents have tuned into Nickelodeon, where the Gabi message has been played three times a day.

Now the campaign has picked up a UK Water Efficiency Award for Campaigns and Education and, this week (Mon Nov 12), became a Gold Winner in the Retail Utility Category at the UK Green Apple Environment Awards, which took place at the House of Commons.

United Utilities Demand Strategy Analyst Maxine Stiller said helping people be more water efficient was good for the environment and people's bills.

"We're always looking for new ways to get the message across. We've been giving away free water-saving packs and gadgets like save-a-flush devices and shower regulators for a long time, but GabiH2O has helped us reach a whole new audience. Children instinctively want to protect the environment and learn really fast. We hope we can harness pester power working for the common good. It's great to be recognised for the work we're doing," she said.

Kiaran Saunders, Vice President, Commercial Director, Nickelodeon UK, says "We are immensely proud of what we have achieved working with Gabi. GabiH2O has harnessed the medium of mass media reach to create the first unified nationwide outreach campaign dedicated to saving water, reaching millions. By partnering with Nickelodeon Gabi has ensured a nationwide audience is being exposed to water saving messages.”

The campaign went live on 14 May, running 3-5 times per day on Nickelodeon channels. The average viewing figures are 5.5 million per month, of which roughly half are kids 4-15, and 1.6 million are parents. The accompanying website has had over 174,700 visits and more than 211,300 page views, suggesting a high level of engagement with Gabi and his message.

From Utility Week:
Water companies celebrated for successful efficiency projects

Five water companies were recognised for water efficiency projects last night, along with such diverse parties as an animated camel on Nickelodeon and a youth hostel in Scotland.

Waterwise and the Environment Agency, hosting the UK Water Efficiency Awards, said UK businesses could save more than £3.5 billion a year with water efficiency measures.

[...]

Jacob Tompkins, Waterwise's managing director, said: "We've been impressed by the calibre of all the entries this year; it's been truly inspiring to see all the great work on water efficiency that's being done all across the UK."

The organisation behind rapping cartoon camel GabiH2O won plaudits for education, while others showed water saving in agriculture, businesses and public bodies.

Lord Chris Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency, said: "The recent drought has brought the need for water efficiency into sharp focus. We want to see all businesses reducing their water usage and using this to deliver environmental and financial benefits.

"What can be achieved is highlighted by this year's winners - all of whom should be praised for not only saving water but also putting themselves a step ahead of their competitors, saving money and preparing for the future."
Also, from Energy Live News:
Cartoon camel and Swindon are water efficiency winners

What do a cartoon camel, the town of Swindon and a plant nursery have in common? They're all winners when it comes to water efficiency.

That's according to the Environment Agency and Waterwise, which are urging businesses to use water efficiency to boost their profits on the day it announces the results of its UK Water Efficiency Awards 2012.

Winners included a plant nursery in Southamption which is saving itself at least £20,000 a year as it is no longer reliant on mains water to irrigate its plants. It brought in a seven million litre reservoir, rainwater capture and a clean water storage and pumping system.

The town of Swindon also bagged an award for its project to cut water use by one million litres a day by 2014. It is on course to achieve the ambitious goal after already slashing overall use by more than 560,000 litres a day.

GabiH2O, the rapping cartoon camel was another of the winning projects, as the UK’s first on-air animated character dedicated to educating children about water efficiency, created in partnership between Nickelodeon UK and United Utilities and Southern Water.

Lord Chris Smith, Chairman of the Environment Agency said: “We want to see all businesses reducing their water usage and using this to deliver environmental and financial benefits. What can be achieved is highlighted by this year’s winners – all of whom should be praised for not only saving water but also putting themselves a step ahead of their competitors, saving money and preparing for the future.”

Rapping camel wins water saving award

The UK Water Efficiency Awards ceremony has just been held at the House of Lords where 23 deserving projects were recognised for their efforts to help save water.

The awards, created by Waterwise and the Environment Agency, coincided with the Environment Agency’s Greener Business initiative which recognises the green businesses which are helping to drive green growth, despite tough economic times.

The awards took place in The Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the House of Lords with the 23 recipients ranging from the creative to the practical, demonstrating the variety of ways in which organisations are cutting water consumption.

The Environment Agency’s Chairman’s Award went to ‘Save Water Swindon’. The collaborative project, involving Thames Water, WWF and Waterwise, is on course to achieve its ambitious goal of reducing water consumption in Swindon by one million litres a day by 2014! The town has already reduced overall use by more than 560,000 litres a day.

A rapping camel also won an award. Gabi the Camel, an animated animal on Nickelodeon UK, raps to the kids about the need to save water.

The chairman of the Environment Agency, Lord Chris Smith, said: “The recent drought has brought the need for water efficiency into sharp focus.

"What can be achieved is highlighted by this year’s winners – all of whom should be praised for not only saving water but also putting themselves a step ahead of their competitors, saving money and preparing for the future.”

Jacob Tompkins, Waterwise’s managing director, said: “We’ve been impressed by the calibre of all the entries this year; it’s been truly inspiring to see all the great work on water efficiency that’s being done all across the UK.”

It’s nice that they both said that. But here at BigGreenSmile, we’d have liked it just that little bit more if they’d rapped. Maybe next year.

UK 2012 Water Efficiency Award Winners Announced

The Environment Agency and Waterwise urged businesses to reduce their water usage, saying UK businesses could save more than £3.5 billion a year by using water efficiency measures.

The Environment Agency and Waterwise announced the 2012 winners of their Water Efficiency Awards. They were chosen for demonstrating creative but practical ways for reducing water consumption.

The winner in the farming and horticulture sector is Lowaters Nursery in Southampton, which built a reservoir of 7 million liters' capacity and uses rainwater capture and a clean water storage and pumping system to avoid relying on the public water system. The nursery has saved at least £20,000 a year, according to the two organizations.

Save Water Swindon won the Environment Agency's Chairman's Award. Started in 2010, the project is a partnership of Thames Water, Waterwise, and the World Wildlife Fund to reduce water use in Swindon, which is in a region the Environment Agency has classified as "seriously water stressed" (meaning all available water sources already are in use and wildlife is under increasing pressure). The town gets its water from two rivers, the Kennet and the Thames. Save Water Swindon aims to reduce water consumption in the town by 1 million liters per day by 2014 and is on course to achieve that goal, having cut overall use by more than 560,000 liter per day.

Winning in the Campaigns & Education Category was a project featuring Gabi the camel, described as the UK's first on-air animated character dedicated to educating children about water efficiency. GabiH2O, in partnership with Nickelodeon UK and sponsored by United Utilities and Southern Water, features a rapping camel educating children on the need to save water.

A runner-up in the Built Environment category is Tap into Savings, a water and energy saving program in Essex that is saving more than 80,000 liters per day. More than 3,000 homes have been fitted with water-saving devices such as shower flow regulators and dual-flush mechanisms, saving about 15 percent per household.

"The recent drought has brought the need for water efficiency into sharp focus," said Lord Chris Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency. "We want to see all businesses reducing their water usage and using this to deliver environmental and financial benefits. What can be achieved is highlighted by this year's winners -– all of whom should be praised for not only saving water, but also putting themselves a step ahead of their competitors, saving money, and preparing for the future."

Nickelodeon UK Partners With Eco-brand GabiH2O To Develop UK's First Animated Content For TV Teaching Children To Be Smarter About Water

Below is a Nickelodeon UK and Ireland press release from the official GabiH2O website, GabihH2O.com, which announces the Nickelodeon UK news that the number one British children's entertainment brand, Nickelodeon UK, has partnered with the Eco-brand GabiH2O to develop the UK's first animated content for television which aims to teach British children to be smarter about water:
Eco-brand GabiH2O partners with Nickelodeon UK to develop UK's first animated content for TV teaching children to be smarter about water

Hosepipe bans across parts of England, flash flooding, water shortages, wildlife at risk. But whose fault is it? Can't be ours, surely? The blame bandwagon: it's always someone else's fault. Whether it's the water companies, the government, lack of investment, short-term gain over long-term planning – it's always someone else who is to blame.

However the simple facts are that we all take water for granted. The current drought and announcement of hosepipe bans has just brought this home to us all. The UK now has a serious problem. Unbelievably, even with the recent heavy rain, London, per capita, has less water than the Sudan, Edinburgh has the same rainfall as Istanbul and Manchester gets only half the rainfall of Sydney. Each of us, on average, uses about 150 litres of water per day. We are used to treating water as a commodity that is infinite. Yet the truth is, unless we start to use our water more wisely, we face the prospect of continuing, long-term water shortages and hosepipe bans. Innovative eco-brand, GabiH2O, believe it's time that we started to look at how we can all cut demand by reducing water wastage, and takes a uniquely innovative and fun approach to influencing the lifestyle changes needed to encourage reductions in water consumption. GabiH2O, believe that we need to change our attitudes to water. Instead of playing the blame game, we need to take personal responsibility.

With this in mind, GabiH2O today announces a partnership with Nickelodeon UK involving the development and airing of the UK's first on-air animated character to teach children to be smarter about water. With parts of the UK facing the worst drought in 36 years and hosepipe bans already in place, the timing could not be more appropriate.

GabiH2O founder, Avi Djanogly believes that this begins with educating children, hence GabiH2O's original use of cartoon characters, centred around the main character, a Nubian camel called Gabi, to convey the key messages on water usage. Gabi and his gang of thirteen characters offer children tips on how to be smarter about water usage e.g. switching taps off when brushing their teeth, taking a five-minute shower or using leftover water to water plants.

Gabi the camel comes to life as a 3D animated character which launches today on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons in 60 and 30-second educational advertorials, featuring Gabi interacting in a live action spot with real kids and providing top tips on water conservation, against an original rap. Supporting the on-air activity will be an interactive and appealing experience on a bespoke microsite, http://www.nick.co.uk/gabih20 (which goes live on 11th May) to drive home the message that saving water is vital. A brand new Gabi game will provide a fun way for kids to learn top tips to prevent water wastage. The Gabi microsite will also include Gabi's top ten water saving tips, video clips, fun downloads and lots of Gabi goodies for kids to win, including an activity book, Gabibag, singing toothbrush and Gabi trump cards. A clip of the GabiH2O advertorial on Nickelodeon can be viewed on the microsite from Monday 14th May.

Minister, Richard Benyon, said: "I'm really impressed by the engagement with children, and the use of water as a medium for learning. It's an incredibly powerful tool. I want to make sure that across government we are supporting this kind of initiative."

Avi Djanogly comments, "Teaching children not to take water for granted but to value what comes out of the tap is undoubtedly the key to a sustainable future and smarter use of water. We need to reach out to and engage with as many kids as possible, to get our message across. So how do we do this? The answer is that we explain the problem to kids on their level and we educate them about the problem. Once they understand, children are the best educators. Parents listen to their children. That's why we believe in 'Edutainment', which is a great way to convey these messages to children in a fun and vibrant way and vicariously to reach their parents. By capturing their imaginations, we can change behaviour willingly and gradually, so we are very excited to be producing this ground-breaking educational advertorial with Nickelodeon."

But GabiH2O is not just an awareness building brand. Their experts have also developed a whole range of water-saving devices – in particular, their new Slimline showerhead. "We wanted style combined with performance" says Avi Djanogly, founder of GabiH2O, "yet our showerhead also saves water! It is designed to deliver an optimum 7.6 litres every minute, as opposed to water wasters that deliver 12, 15 or even 25 litres."

Every aspect of the Slimline showerhead has been created to enhance the water-saving experience. It has been designed to provide good shower performance and, ultimately, to save water and energy. Harnessing the energy in air and water, it creates high velocity water inside the head of the showerhead itself, forcing air to mix with water. Thus, less water is used but the flow is not diminished and you can still enjoy a fantastic shower experience.

To engage children's interest further in the water-saving experience, GabiH2O have also developed a childrens' water saving kit based around the cartoon character, Gabi the Camel (who better to teach the art of water saving?).

Avi Djanogly comments: “With the help of Waterwise, the leading authority in the UK on water efficiency focused on decreasing water consumption, we put together a kids' water saving kit. This includes: a 'stop the gush when you brush' singing toothbrush; a folding watering can with five water saving tips and trump cards highlighting water wasters and savers, including energy tips. These are just some of the highlights in the kit, as well as the GabiH2O app, which is also great fun for kids. I believe that it's time to make water saving fun and we want to get the message across that 'everyone oughta save water'!”

Small changes in the way we use water can impact and benefit the world, our world. GabiH2O’s research shows that if we just cut our average use of water from 150 litres of water a day to 130 litres that will benefit the environment hugely. And it doesn't have to be a huge sacrifice. If we just turn off the water when we brush our teeth, take a five minute shower or fill the dishwasher and washing machine to capacity, we will make major savings in water, energy and money.

Jacob Tompkins, MD of Waterwise, said: “The GabiH2O Slimline showerhead can reduce shower water use by about 30 litres per shower, saving the average household up to 60 litres per day. If a million households replaced their current showerhead with a GabiH2O showerhead, this would save 60 million litres per day. 60 million litres per day is enough to supply the population of Ashford, Tunbridge Wells, Bognor and Guildford with water”.

Nickelodeon VP, Commercial Director, Kiaran Saunders adds, “Working with GabiH2O has provided Nickelodeon with an opportunity to show what we can do when charged with creating custom content for a partner. The result is engaging animated content and online activities that are truly entertaining while conveying an important environmental message.”

“This is the essential part of the package to us,” said Geoff Loader, Southern Water’s Director of Communications.

“It complements the resource material we already make available to schools but with the backing of a major children’s TV network, it should open doors to take vital water efficiency messages to a wider audience in a fun way.

“We plan to keep the messaging fresh by running a number of competitions with prizes such as a trip to Nickelodeon Land theme park in Blackpool, adopting a camel at Marwell Wildlife Park or keeper experiences and mini camel safaris at the Oasis Camel Sanctuary in Suffolk.

“Gabi the camel is the UK’s first animated TV character promoting water efficiency and we’re delighted to be in partnership with GabiH2O and Nickelodeon.”

It’s a partnership which has already impressed Water Minister Richard Benyon who said: “I want to make sure that across government we are supporting this kind of initiative.
