Viacom Reports Results for June 2015 Quarter; Adjusted Earnings Per Share up 4% to a Record $1.47

Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, has today, Thursday 6th August 2015, reported financial results for the quarter ended Tuesday 30th June 2015, including a 4% increase in adjusted diluted earnings per share to $1.47, a record high for the June quarter.

Sumner M. Redstone, Executive Chairman of Viacom, said, "Viacom is meeting the challenges of a rapidly-changing media landscape by creating exciting, unique content that connects with audiences on all platforms. Our management team is positioning Viacom for success, and I am confident that we have the strategies in place to thrive."

Philippe Dauman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viacom, said, "Viacom continues to drive change in our business, creating unprecedented levels of original content, forging innovative marketing and distribution partnerships, and prioritizing international growth through organic expansion and strategic investments. Our Media Networks are quickly bringing innovative data-based advertising products to market, broadening our sales capabilities and developing new solutions for marketing partners that capture the full scope and depth of our powerful multiplatform brands. We introduced several popular new series in the third quarter, including Lip Sync Battle and Scream and expanded agreements with important distribution partners. Paramount also set the stage for the return of one of the studio's most successful franchises, Mission: Impossible, and is anticipating the broadcast premiere of the first Paramount Television production, Minority Report, next month.

"Underpinning this, we are operating more efficiently than ever, accelerating content development and delivering programming more quickly to audiences on all screens. We maintain a strong balance sheet, giving us significant financial flexibility and we remain committed to resuming Viacom's share repurchase program in October."

Quarterly revenues declined 11% to $3.06 billion due to lower theatrical revenues in Filmed Entertainment, which scheduled no wide theatrical releases in the quarter. Viacom Media Networks revenues increased $6 million to $2.60 billion, primarily due to higher affiliate fees. Absent an unfavorable 2% impact of foreign exchange, Media Networks revenues increased 2%. Worldwide and domestic affiliate revenues rose 2%, driven by rate increases. Excluding the impact from the timing of product available under certain distribution agreements, domestic affiliate revenues grew in the mid-single digits. Domestic advertising revenues decreased 9%, due to a decline in traditional ratings. Worldwide advertising revenues decreased 2%, which reflects a 58% gain in international advertising revenues driven principally by Channel 5.

Filmed Entertainment revenues decreased by 44% to $479 million, largely due to a decline in theatrical revenues of 92% related to the timing of the summer season theatrical slate. In the prior year, Transformers: Age of Extinction was released in the third quarter, while this year's summer tentpoles, Terminator: Genisys and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, were widely released in the fourth quarter. Worldwide home entertainment revenues decreased 30%, to $199 million in the quarter, and ancillary revenues declined 43%, primarily driven by the benefit in the prior year of the sale of certain distribution rights.

Quarterly adjusted operating income was steady at $1.08 billion. Media Networks adjusted operating income declined 1% to $1.11 billion. Absent a 1% adverse impact of foreign exchange, Media Networks adjusted operating income was flat. Filmed Entertainment adjusted operating income declined $7 million to $48 million.

Quarterly adjusted net earnings attributable to Viacom declined 4% to $591 million. Adjusted diluted earnings per share for the quarter increased 4% to $1.47.

At June 30, 2015, total debt outstanding was $13.08 billion, compared with $12.70 billion at September 30, 2014. The Company's cash balances were $421 million at June 30, 2015, a decrease from $1.0 billion at September 30, 2014.

NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson To Guest Star In New "Bubble Guppies" Episode "The New Doghouse!", Premiering 6/4 On Nickelodeon USA

USA Today is reporting the exciting news that Six-time NASCAR champion and winner of the SpongeBob 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup, Jimmie Johnson, will be a guest star in a upcoming brand-new episode of Nickelodeon's hit CG-animated preschool series, "Bubble Guppies"!

In the all-new episode, entitled "The New Doghouse!" (#401), Johnson plays a home improvement television show host enlisted to help rebuild Bubble Puppy's wrecked Dog house. Animated as a lobster and clad in work attire suggestive of his racing sponsor, Lowe's, Johnson deploys "Extreme Dog House: Neighborhood Edition" to make everything right in Bubbletucky!

Johnson's guest appearance on Nick's popular preschool series will premiere on Nickelodeon USA on Thursday 4th June 2015 at 11:00am (ET/PT).

Before lending his voice and persona to a character in "Bubble Guppies", there wasn't so much as a class play on Jimmie Johnson's theatrical credits. Not a Christmas pageant. Not a part as a pine tree in the elementary school Arbor Day festival. There have been a few bit parts on television as himself. And there was some media training 20 years ago as he was preparing for the concurrent life of Sprint Cup driver and sponsor pitchman, learning "how to talk your way out of some hot political question if you needed to." But that's easy. Kid's television, not easy.

Johnson got through it just fine, however. Enjoyed, it, actually. The final verdict will be rendered at 11 a.m. Thursday, however, when 5-year-old daughter Genevieve tunes in for her favorite television show as Johnson makes his voice-over debut on Nick Jr.'s "Bubble Guppies".

Jimmie Johnson says the idea of doing voice work on a cartoon was borne when he was trying to think of something cool he could do for eldest daughter, Genevieve. (Photo: Nickelodeon)

"What's so funny is trying to explain to Genevieve that daddy is going to be on Bubble Guppies," Johnson told USA TODAY Sports. "She's convinced that they're real. So how is daddy on the cartoon? And why is daddy a lobster? Very interesting conversation."

The idea for Johnson's appearance began as he pondered aloud while flying to Los Angeles earlier this year what special thing he could do for his oldest daughter. When "Bubble Guppies" was mentioned, Johnson's media relations assistant emailed a Nickelodeon representative and had received a reply expressing interest within a half hour.

Johnson was ensconced in a Charlotte, N.C., sound studio this spring to perform, with a story board of the characters for inspiration and a two-way connection to the New York-based writers for feedback.

"We were bummed we wouldn't get the instant gratification then and now we're eagerly awaiting the show," Johnson said. "It is not my normal tone and pitch and the way I talk. They had a certain character they needed me to play. Fortunately, it wasn't really a live audience. I couldn't see anyone. I could only imagine trying to act this out on camera. Though this just being audio, it made it easier on me."

Johnson recorded parts for about an hour. The show runs 20 minutes. He does not anticipate an Emmy nomination.

"I don't think the lobster is going to pull that off. But it was a cool experience," he laughed. "We all watch different cartoons and animation and you hear the stories. I think I enjoyed it a lot more than I do shooting a quick commercial. We covered a lot of territory. To do a 30-second TV commercial can easily take two days if you let the group handle it how they want. We did all of that in an hour. From an efficiency standpoint, it was more my wheel house."

Johnson completed his Nickelodeon and aquatic immersion in May by winning the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Though Johnson may inadvertently raise his daughter's expectations for what daddy can pull off — "Frozen 2", anyone? — he eagerly anticipates this premier screening.

"We record it because Genevieve loves it so I know we will have it in our lineup, but it would be fun to sit down and have a proper viewing of it," he said.

Sarah Landy, Vice President, Production and Development, Nickelodeon Preschool, called Johnson "a complete natural."

"He was great," she told USA TODAY Sports. "He was such a pro and such a good sport about it. We were so happy to have him on the show. He did a fantastic job."

Race car drivers have been fairly frequent cameo artists in television and cinema, but generally as themselves, like Johnson's 2006 appearance in an episode of "Las Vegas". Numerous drivers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Schumacher and Richard Petty — who voiced the prominent Strip "The King" Weathers, a character based on his career — appeared in the 2006 animation film "Cars". Actors Wanda Sykes and Jeffrey Tambor have voiced characters previously on "Bubble Guppies". As is the case with most guest appearances, an already-planned character was tailored to fit the performer. In this case, it was blue and white work attire and a racing-style hat with suitable slits for Johnson's lobster antennae.

"I had to just go somewhere I hadn't before and come up with a voice, and screaming," Johnson said. "Granted, it's a kid cartoon, but it was definitely out of my comfort zone and a fun experience."

As part of their article, The Straits Times has also unveiled a exclusive interview with Chris Gifford, co-creator of "Dora the Explorer" and "Dora and Friends", who talks about how the character 'Dora the Explorer' was very nearly a bunny rabbit who went on adventures with his Mother, overcoming preschool obstacles along the way, and how 'Dorothy Gale', the famed female adventurer from "The Wizard of Oz", inspired his mega hit Nickelodeon preschool television series, "Dora the Explorer".

To celebrate the upcoming premiere of "Dora and Friends: Into the City!", Nick Jr. USA's official websites "Dora and Friends: Into the City!" webpage has unveiled exclusive printable "Dora and Friends" eBooks, which introduces each character from Nick's brand-new animated preschool show, which you can print out here on NickJr.com!

Nick Jr. UK and Ireland will start to premiere and show Nickelodeon Preschool Animations "Dora and Friends", a brand new animated spin-off series from Nickelodeon's massively popular preschool series "Dora the Explorer", in 2015, as part of "2015 on Nick Jr. UK"!

From The Straits Times via AsiaOne:
Dora The Explorer grows up

Creator and Executive Producer of the popular children's television series, Dora the Explorer, Chris Gifford.

Do not be surprised to see a slightly older and more mature-looking Dora Marquez on Nickelodeon this August.

A pre-teen version of Dora from the hit preschool series Dora The Explorer is set to appear in the spin-off Dora And Friends: Into The City, on the American cable television network later this year in the United States.

Viewers here can catch Dora And Friends when it premieres on Nickelodeon Asia next year, says Mr Chris Gifford, 55, the co-creator and executive producer of the Dora franchise.

While the popular children's animated series Dora The Explorer has the seven- year-old Latina heroine embarking on adventures and quests with her best friend Boots the Monkey, the new series places her as a 10-year-old living in the city, alongside her new human peers Alana, Emma, Naiya, Kate and Pablo.

"We wanted to try putting Dora in a city environment with friends her own age, as opposed to just animals," says Mr Gifford.

He is confident viewers will take to a more grown-up Dora. The upcoming series will showcase the tween using the latest gadgets with her friends.

The producer is here to attend the premiere of Dora The Explorer Live! Dora's Pirate Adventure (above), a two-act interactive song and dance show, which opens at Resorts World Sentosa today.

In the show, Dora and her animal friends such as Boots, Isa the Iguana and Tico the Squirrel embark on a journey to Treasure Island in pursuit of Pirate Piggies who have stolen her treasure chest.

This is the second stage adaptation of Dora The Explorer, the first being Dora The Explorer Live! Search For The City Of Lost Toys. The musical, which came here in 2012, has sold more than two million tickets in the United Kingdom, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

Dora, who speaks English and Spanish, has been embraced in more than 150 countries and territories since the original TV series premiered in 2002. It is now distributed in over 20 countries in Asia.

Now in its eighth season, it has received 15 Daytime Emmy nominations and many industry awards.

Known for its interactive and educational format, every episode of Dora The Explorer features Dora inviting her young viewers to help her solve problems and overcome obstacles she faces along her journey.

While the English-Spanish version of Dora The Explorer is shown in the United States and Singapore, it has been translated into more than 30 other languages worldwide.

Mr Gifford says the most important thing about Dora is her bilingualism. Not only does he aim to inspire children to develop an interest in learning a second language, but he also hopes to promote greater empathy and understanding of other nationalities too.

"Dora's Latina roots are a big part of her identity and so much about Dora is about building bridges betwen different cultures," he says.

Mr Gifford has been at Nickelodeon for 25 years. He entered the entertainment industry in 1980 as an actor on award-winning children's show The Great Space Coaster, before joining Nickelodeon in 1989 as a unit manager. He is also the creator and executive producer of the companion hit series Go, Diego, Go!, about Dora's cousin Diego.

He reveals that the character of Dora could well have turned out to be a rabbit instead.

"It all started out with a simple idea about a little bunny going on an adventure with his mummy and overcoming preschool obstacles along the way," says the producer, who is married with two children and lives in New Jersey. This premise, coupled with inspiration from The Wizard of Oz's famed female adventurer Dorothy Gale, eventually gave rise to Dora The Explorer.

While his main medium is television, he says the live productions of Dora are unique in that he can see instantly the young audiences' reactions.

He adds: "It's always great seeing how much the kids love Dora and how happy they are to have helped her in her quests at the end of the show."

Sneak Peek At First Episode Of Nickelodeon's Brand-New Animated Preschool Literacy Series "Wallykazam!"

To celebrate and promote Nick USA starting to premiere and show the networks brand-new animated preschool literacy series "Wallykazam!" on Monday 3rd February 2014 at 1:00pm (ET/PT), Nick USA's publicity office has unveiled a all-new online streaming video clip which gives a super sneak peek at the first episode of the new preschool TV show, "Naptime for Borgelorp", which you can watch below here on NickALive!:

nick wallykazam naptime clip 1 640x480 1600 m30W from Jessica Wilson on Vimeo.

In the video clip, whilst Wally and his pet dragon Norville babysit Ogre Doug's hyper and unpredictable pet Borgelorp, Wally gets Borgelorp to chase after a magical floating sock to tire him out for a nap. However, Borgelorp catches the sock in a patch of purple flowers, which Ogre Doug said Borgelorp isn't allowed to eat. To draw Borgelorp's attention away from the purple flowers, Wally and Norville discuss what else Borgelorp might like to eat. The pair decide that sand might not taste nice, but a sandwich would be very tasty, so Wally conjures up a sandwich for Borgelorp to eat! Phew! That could have been really bad if he ate those purple flowers. It could have been a disaster!

In "Wallykazam!", Nickelodeon invites preschoolers to discover the magic of words. "Wallykazam!" follows the adventures of a troll named Wally and his pet dragon, Norville, who live in a forest with giants, goblins, ogres, sprites and other mythical creatures. Wally uses his magic stick to make words come to life on screen that start with a specific letter, sound or rhyme. Each episode features a new set of magic words that Wally uses to playfully transform the world around him.

"Wallykazam!" is Nickelodeon's first preschool series that embeds a literacy curriculum into a full-length story, introducing skills such as letter and sound identification, rhyming, vocabulary development and comprehension strategies. Celebrity guests featured in season one include Vanessa Bayer ("Saturday Night Live"), Weird Al Yankovic, John O'Hurley (J. Peterman in "Seinfeld"), Kate Micucci (Lucy in "The Big Bang Theory") and Alanna Ubach (Amy Hobbs in Nick at Nite's "See Dad Run", Manny Rivera / El Tigre in Nickelodeon's "El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera", and Boo, Cletus, Fresca and the voice of Miss. Daisy in Nickelodeon Movies Oscar-winning animated film "Rango"). Created by producer/writer Adam Peltzman (Emmy Award-winning "The Backyardigans" and "Bubble Guppies"), the series will air regularly weekdays at 1:00pm (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon USA.

In the series premiere episode, "Naptime for Borgelorp", Wally babysits Ogre Doug's hyper and unpredictable pet Borgelorp. Ogre Doug gives Wally two instructions: get Borgelorp to take a nap and, most importantly, make sure he doesn't eat any purple flowers. Wally uses magic words to help tire out the rambunctious creature and desperately tries to keep him away from purple flowers, but Bobgoblin has other plans. The words introduced in the episode start with the letter "S" and include somersault, soar, sandwich and symphony.

Nickelodeon's award-winning website for parents and preschoolers, www.nickjr.com, features the networks official "Wallykazam!" webpage with letter tracing activities, a word wheel craft, "Wallykazam!" board game, puzzles, coloring pages, and more. Parents can also visit NickJr.com's Creativity Center and "send a letter" to Wally for a chance to see their child's artwork on TV. Beginning Monday 3rd February 2014, the full series premiere episode will be available on the site and free for download on iTunes the week of Monday 27th January 2014.
