Pensacola, FL: 5-2-1-0 Northwest Florida Day of Play Returns to Community Maritime Park on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Pensacola, FL - Parents and children looking to find new ways to spice up their outdoor play will have to look no further than Community Maritime Park this weekend!

The fifth annual the 5-2-1-0 Northwest Florida Day of Play returns to the space just outside Blue Wahoos Stadium for outdoor fun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

The free event will be hosted in conjunction with the city of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department and the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County, which sponsors 5-2-1-0 Escambia.

“We are trying to get kids and their parents outside to play,” said Tanya Vaden, marketing coordinator for the Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department. “Get up, get active and turn the TVs, tablets and phones off. Just get out and play.”

The 5-2-1-0 Escambia initiative looks to encourage healthy lifestyle by promoting four habits which can reduce an individual’s risk for chronic diseases.

Participants take part in events at a previous 5210 Northwest Florida Day of Play. This year's event is scheduled for Sept. 29.

The guidelines recommend five or more fruits or vegetables per day, two hours or fewer of screen time, one hour of active exercise, and zero sugary drinks.

The “Day of Play” event will bring more than 40 wellness business and organizations to the Community Maritime Park festivities to help individuals gain knowledge and learn activities on the subject.

“We are promoting the guidelines of the 5-2-1-0 program,” Vaden said. “… Their program is basically recommendations to kids for a healthy lifestyle.

“They work within our school systems and community centers to promote this program to children to get them to recognize healthy eating habits and then healthy exercising and activity habits.”

There will be the usual prize giveaways and demonstrations and interactive games featuring sports like tennis and golf.

More challenging, however, may be the mobile “Ninja Warrior” style obstacle course which competitors can race through against the clock.

According to Vaden, the Pensacola event got its start by latching onto a national television movement which received good support from schools and other education groups.

“We started out by coinciding with the Nickelodeon 'Worldwide Day of Play,' but we’ve evolved. We’ve made it our own unique event to Pensacola,” Vaden said.

“Bringing the health department in as a major partner has really made all the difference in the contacts and community agencies we’ve been able to work together with to pull that off.”

Vaden said the event has continued to grow in recent years and is so popular that with rain, which hit during the event two years ago, the crowds keep coming.

The event will even have options for those who are about to have a child. The Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition will be on hand to help expectant parents, leaving no excuse to stay inside this Saturday.

“Really from age 0 or not even born yet to as old as you want to be to come out and play,” Vaden said.

Worldwide Day of Play is Nickelodeon's summer-long play campaign, a slime-filled cross-country tour that celebrates all the ways kids love to play.

On the ground, Nickelodeon will celebrate with over 4,000 events hosted by local and national partners including: Afterschool Alliance; Boys & Girls Clubs of America; Girl Scouts of the USA; Kiwanis International’s Builders Club and K-Kids; Laureus Sport for Good; National Fitness Foundation; NFL PLAY 60; Playworks; Police Athletic League; Special Olympics International; The Aspen Institute’s Project Play; The Association of Children’s Museums; US Play Coalition and USA BMX. Additionally, the network will launch two new grant programs in partnership with Laureus Sport for Good and National Fitness Foundation in honor of Worldwide Day of Play’s 15th anniversary.

Nickelodeon will commemorate Worldwide Day of Play on-air on Saturday, September 29 with interstitials featuring cast members from Nick’s hit series I Am Frankie. The interstitials, which highlight the importance of physical play in kids’ lives and encourage them to get outside and get active, will air across all Nickelodeon platforms.

In addition to hosting nationwide grassroots events with its partners, the network will also mark Worldwide Day of Play with the launch of two new grant programs in partnership with Laureus Sport for Good, funding underserved communities’ afterschool programs, and National Fitness Foundation along with DonorsChoose, which will fund in-school activities. Both grant programs aim to bring fitness and play to kids across the country.

In May, Nick kicked off its summer-long play campaign, a slime-filled cross-country tour which visited: Phoenix, Ariz.; St. Louis, Mo.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Houston, TX and Oakland, Calif.; for Worldwide Day of Play events in partnership with the Children’s Museum of Phoenix; The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum; the Pittsburgh Steelers; Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Harris County Precinct One; and the After-School All-Stars, the Oakland Athletics and the Oakland A’s Community Fund.

The tour culminates in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on Sept. 15, with Nick teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City’s Walk for the Kids. The fun-filled event will feature appearances by stars from Nickelodeon’s hit series I Am Frankie, Alex Hook, and Carson Rowland; Nick-themed games and activities; a slime booth; costumed characters; a Nick Radio dance party and more. The network will be joined by longstanding partners including: Canine Companions for Independence; Jr. NBA; KidTribe; MLB “PLAY BALL;” New York Red Bulls; NFL PLAY 60; Peppa Pig and George; Playworks; The Muddy Puddles Project; Tough Mudder’s “Mini Mudder” and USA BMX; and new partner Nike.

Nickelodeon is expanding Worldwide Day of Play’s reach through a new partnership with Mini Mudder, Tough Mudder’s one-mile Mud Run designed for adventure-seeking kids and consists of eight to ten fun and challenging team-focused obstacles. In celebration of Worldwide Day of Play, Mini Mudder will add a brand-new Nickelodeon-themed “Slime” obstacle to its courses, providing kids with the opportunity to be physically active while also having fun.

Nike is a proud partner of Nickelodeon’s 15th annual Worldwide Day of Play.

Nickelodeon International’s Together For Good and African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) have teamed up to launch their first collaboration: the Together for Good Wildlife Special, an educational mini-series created to inspire kids to raise awareness about endangered wildlife and empower them to become change-makers.

In the Together For Good Wildlife Special, Nickelodeon star Breanna Yde (School of Rock) will guide young viewers on a journey through Uganda as she discovers key conservation and environmental challenges, and hears from heroes who work daily to protect at-risk wildlife including lions, giraffes, rhinoceroses, elephants and chimpanzees. The mini-series and supplementing digital vignettes will tell the stories of real life heroes: guides, park rangers, detection dogs and their handlers – and show kids everywhere how they too can help from home with additional resources at http://wildlife.nickelodeon.tv.

The special expands beyond linear with web and social activations where young viewers can learn more about and support at-risk wildlife. Kids can also participate in the #AWFRoarChallenge on social media, which encourages kids to take videos of themselves roaring in a funny effort to scare a friend. As the official campaign hashtag, #AWFRoarChallenge will also collate fun animal facts, ways to fundraise, and additional information about the plights of lions, giraffes, rhinoceroses, elephants and chimpanzees, while showing kids that using their voice can spread the word and help save these animals from extinction.

The Together For Good Wildlife Special is airing across Nickelodeon’s international network of channels that span 170+ territories. To learn more about it and how you can get involved and to watch videos from the mini-series, visit http://wildlife.nickelodeon.tv and https://nick.awf.org.
