Netflix's Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series Enters Scoring Stage

Fans of Nickelodeon's beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series are in for a treat as Netflix's highly anticipated live-action adaptation draws closer to completion. The latest update reveals exciting developments in the production process, building anticipation among fans worldwide.

Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) in Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series

Following the earlier sneak peek into the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender during Netflix's TUDUM event in Brazil, the streamer has once again delighted fans with a fresh update on the progress of the live-action series. While the specific release date remains under wraps, the eagerly awaited series is scheduled to make its debut in 2024.

The most recent update from the Avatar universe reveals that the series' musical score is currently undergoing recording. This significant milestone indicates that the live-action rendition of Avatar: The Last Airbender is entering one of its final stages of post-production. As the finishing touches are applied, viewers can anticipate more concrete details about the release date to be unveiled.

The original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series aired on Nickelodeon across three seasons from February 2005 to July 2008, capturing the hearts of audiences and amassing a dedicated fan base. The show's immense success led to the expansion of the Avatar franchise, including ongoing comics, prequel novels, an animated sequel series, and even a live-action film adaptation. Now, Netflix is poised to carry forward the legacy of the franchise with its highly anticipated live-action remake series.

The news of the musical score being recorded for the live-action adaptation bodes well for fans eagerly awaiting its arrival. The first season is set to comprise eight episodes, each approximately an hour long. The series is expected to kick off with events inspired by "Book One: Water" from the original animated series. While staying true to the essence of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation aims to recreate the captivating narrative in a visually stunning new form.

During Netflix's TUDUM event in June, the curtain was lifted on the images and trailer for the live-action series. Fans were introduced to the talented cast members who will bring the cherished characters to life, including Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), and Sokka (Ian Ousley). The initial glimpse depicted their journey to the Northern Water Tribe as Aang embarks on the path to master water bending. Pursuing them are Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and his uncle, General Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee).

Netflix also unveiled updated emblems representing the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads, etched into diverse terrains and encompassed by elemental swirls. These emblems serve as symbols of the distinct cultures and elemental bending abilities of each nation, enriching the visual experience for fans.

While the extent of the adaptation remains somewhat mysterious, the casting of Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue suggests that the live-action series is poised to encompass all of "Book One." This implies that characters like Suki of the Kyoshi Warriors and Avatar Roku are also likely to make appearances. With the musical score now in the recording phase, further updates about the release of Avatar: The Last Airbender and its anticipated release date are anticipated to emerge soon, further fueling the excitement of fans worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates soon!

Paramount+ To Add 'TMNT' (1987) Seasons 1 & 2 on Sept. 19

Paramount+ will be adding the first two seasons of the original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series on Tuesday, September 19, our friends over at What's on Paramount+ are reporting!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987 - seasons 1 and 2 covers

The two seasons encompasses the first 18 episodes of the iconic series, from "Turtle Tracks" to "Return of the Technodrome".

The news follows Nickelodeon announcing that it acquired the global rights to the animated Fred Wolf TMNT series during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2023.

By August 1, the first season hit YouTube and Nick.com, began dominating the Totally Turtles Pluto TV channel with episodes as deep as season 7, and Nicktoons has hit plenty of episodes as well. Then on August 14, the first two seasons were relisted on iTunes and other digital purchase websites with Nickelodeon branding.

The 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series joins the 2003 4Kids-produced TMNT series as well as the Nickelodeon-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2018) on the service. The 4Kids-produced series was the only one to arrive Paramount+ in whole rather than in seasonal batches.

Considered one of the most popular kids’ franchises, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a classic, global property created in 1984 by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. It first debuted as a successful comic book series and then became a hit animated TV show, a live-action television series and later spawned numerous blockbuster theatrical releases. The property is a global consumer products powerhouse, winning in every category that has hit shelves to date—with toys, apparel, video games, DVDs and more—and generating billions of dollars at retail.

Billy West Confirms 'Ren & Stimpy' Reboot Is Still In Development

It's been a while since we last heard any update about Comedy Central's upcoming The Ren & Stimpy Show reboot, however, Billy West, who is set to reprise his iconic roles of Ren Hoeck and Stimpson J. Cat for the new series, has confirmed that the reboot is still in development.

The Ren & Stimpy Show

Replying to a fan on Twitter/X asking whether Ren & Stimpy were coming back, West revealed "Yes they are! Sit tight and wait for announcements…".

The Ren & Stimpy Show premiered on August 11, 1991 as one of the original Nicktoons, alongside Rugrats and Doug. The cult Emmy-nominated animated series followed Ren, foul-tempered Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat. It aired for nearly 100 episodes over five seasons on Nickelodeon, ending in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV.

The show's creator, John Kricfalusi, would go on to try and replicate the success of Ren & Stimpy without the restraint of a kid’s network, churning out Ren & Stimpy’s Adult Cartoon Party in 2003, but it turned out the censorship battles made the show what it was.

In August 2020, Comedy Central announced that it had commissioned a reimagening of Nickelodeon's  The Ren & Stimpy Show, 25 years after the Nicktoons' original run, as part of the network tapping into IP across Paramount Global to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South Park. The Ren & Stimpy Show will join a Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie.

It will not, however, involve the show's original creator John K., with Kricfalusi having no creative input into nor receiving any financial remuneration from the new series.
