TMNT Dives Into the Turtle-Verse With New Crossover

Taking Turtle Power to a whole new level.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures #12!

Multiverses are all the rage these days, and it's high time the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles get in on that action. IGN has revealed a big Turtle-Verse crossover happening in the pages of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures.

Kicking off in TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures #12, this crossover happens when the classic 1987 animated Turtles again butt shells with the reality-warping villain Mister Ogg. As seen in the page below, the animated Turtles will be confronted with heroes from the various other animated and comic book TMNT projects.

As this image reveals, the 1987 Turtles will meet Leonardo from the classic Mirage comic book run, Donatello from the 2003 animated series, Michelangelo from the 2012 animated series, Raphael from Rise of the TMNT and Jennika from the current IDW comic universe. But as for how exactly this crossover transpires, and what it means for the Turtles going forward, we'll have to wait for the issue to release. Writer Erik Burnham and artist Sarah Myer are both teasing a big twist yet to be revealed.

Here's IDW's official description for TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures #12:

As promised, Mister Ogg is back! His last attempt to punish the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' wisecracking ways and meta mannerisms failed, but he's still got a few surprises up his sleeve. He's devised a set of challenges, and if the Turtles win, he'll never bring up their fourth wall-breaking again. If they lose, though, the consequences will be dire-they'll be wiped from existence! Let the games begin with part 1 of the Ogglympics!

"IDW and Nickelodeon have always been very supportive of every weird idea our Saturday Morning crew has thrown out, getting enthusiastic and offering suggestions to make things the most fun they can be, and this was no different," Burnham told IGN. "The powers that be put some rules in place, gave some great notes, and then let us go play... and it was a blast. Sarah and Luis Antonio Delgado crushed the pages, as they are known to do. But the big twist of it all is -- well, I guess you'll have to read to find out!"

"Fans can look forward to new settings (keep your eyes peeled for a couple of Easter eggs) and a mashup of turtles and their respective art styles never seen together before in the same story!" says Myer. "We had a blast paying tribute to the various Turtle iterations and hope you'll enjoy seeing how they interact in this mysterious interdimensional adventure -- as Erik said, with a twist!"

The preorder deadline for TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures #12 is on March 18. The issue will be released on April 24.

Sokka Actor Responds to Character Change Backlash in Netflix’s Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

The live-action version of Sokka in Avatar: The Last Airbender is still the character "we know and love" according to actor Ian Ousley – amid fan backlash to the perceived changes from the beloved Nickelodeon animated series in the upcoming Netflix series.

Katara and Sokka in Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

"The animated show really is the heart and soul of what our live-action show is. We were not trying to take out anything," Ousley told GamesRadar+.

"Obviously we took out that element, but he still has that attitude. Not a sexist attitude, but it’s morphed into more of – in Sokka and Katara’s relationship – ‘I’m the leader and you’re the follower’ situation. Stuff like that."

Ousley continues, "He’s still the Sokka we know and love from the cartoon. I don’t even think fans would notice some of those things, honestly, [when] watching our show… He definitely still has his arcs and his lessons in the show."

The controversy surrounding Sokka all originates from an interview Ousley gave to Entertainment Weekly.

In it, he suggested certain elements of the Water Tribe member’s attitude towards women would be toned down for the live-action adaptation. In the original series, his brash pig-headedness (spoiler) eventually melts away after encountering the female Kyoshi warriors.

"There's more weight with realism in every way," Ousley said at the time.

Kiawentiio, who plays Katara, added, "I feel like we also took out the element of how sexist [Sokka] was. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original show that were iffy."

Ousley replied: "Yeah, totally. There are things that were redirected just because it might play a little differently [in live action]."

Avatar: The Last Airbender is streaming on Netflix from February 22.
