The Lazy Dance: LazyTown's Lost Episode Explained

LazyTown, the Icelandic musical series, became a firm favorite with Nickelodeon viewers when it aired on Nickelodeon. Commissioned by Nickelodeon in 2003, the series, created by Magnús Scheving, premiered August 16, 2004, and featured now-iconic characters as Sportacus, Stephanie and Robbie Rotten. The original series ran for two seasons between 2004 and October 2007, before being renewed by Cartoon Network for two new seasons for Cartoonito, airing between March 2013 and October 2014.

Although it’s been off-the-air for quite a long time, it remains a notable part of pop culture, spawning memes and beyond.

However, one thing that LazyTown fans are talking about lately is the lost episode of the series. The Lost Media Archive mentions that there is a lost episode of LazyTown which cannot be watched because it was never actually finished.

Titled "The Lazy Dance", it’s considered the first instalment of the show that was ever produced. However, work on it was never completed due to technical issues.

As a result, it never premiered on television.

Many of you will be familiar with alleged “lost episodes” that are, in fact, creepypastas, and don't actually exist; perhaps the most famous is the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Red Mist".

Nevertheless, this isn’t the case with "The Lazy Dance", as there has been evidence leaked, such as the images above and below, that the episode was at least partly made.

According to Lost Media Archive, the episode is set on Stephanie’s half-birthday and to celebrate she expresses her wish to host a dance party.

All of her friends gather for the event but Sportacus faces a dilemma because he doesn’t actually know how to dance. However, nobody believes him because they can’t imagine a superhero that can’t dance.

Robbie eavesdrops and uses Sportacus’ lack of dance skills to his advantage, posing as a dance instructor to offer him lessons.

Accepting, Robbie teaches him a bunch of terrible dance moves to embarrass him. When he unveils the moves Robbie taught him, the villain’s plans backfire because the others simply teach him their dance moves instead of ridiculing him.

Another little known fact about the episode is that Jake T. Austin is credited as the voice of Stingy in the pilot episode, before the role went to Jodi Eichelberger. Jake T. Austin went on to voice Diego in Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer and it's spin-off Go, Diego, Go!, followed by starring in Nickelodeon Movies' Hotel for Dogs and Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place.

During an old interview with Girl.com, creator Magnús Scheving was asked why he called the show LazyTown:

“We asked a lot of kids…. when you are talking about names, you can’t name it Active Town or Smiley Town because kids would never watch it, but they were interested in what LazyTown was doing? Are they lazy?”

He added: “In my mind, the residents of LazyTown are like the underdogs…. so we cheer for them… you can do it! Go. Go Get Up LazyTown!”

Stefán Karl Stefánsson, Actor Who Portrayed 'Robbie Rotten' on 'LazyTown', Passes Away

Stefan Karl Stefansson has sadly passed away.

The actor, best known as Robbie Rotten on LazyTown, died on Tuesday following a longtime cancer battle, the actor's rep confirmed to E! News. The Iceland native was 43 years old.

"My beloved, Stefan Karl Stefansson, 43, has passed away after battling aggressive bile duct cancer for two years," the star's wife, Steinunn, said in a statement.

In lieu of a funeral, the actor's "remains will be scattered in secrecy in a distant ocean," Steinunn explained. "Stefan's family wants to express their gratitude for the support and warmth received in recent years, and to express their deepest sympathy to the many friends and fans of Stefan Karl."

The puppeteer and actor rose to fame on the popular preschool television series LazyTown, which debuted in the early 2000, as the villain, Robbie Rotten, starring alongside Julianna Mauriello, who played Stephanie. Stefansson's last episode on the show was its finale in 2014. He later gained Internet fame as a meme, "We Are Number One".



"In celebration of Stefan Karl and his contribution to the world of humor and joy of heartfelt expression that unites us all, The Stefan Karl Academy & Center for the Performing Arts will launch in 2019 in Switzerland, hosted by HIAG Immobilien," the late star's friend and manager, Cheryl Edison, told E! News in a statement. "In fulfillment of Stefan Karl's wishes, The Academy will be dedicated to training young people in the history and skills of expression across all genres, while the Theater will offer audiences an opportunity to become part of Stefan's legacy through enjoyment."

In late 2016, a GoFundMe campaign was launched for the actor after it was revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Stefansson shared a hopeful update with fans in February 2017.

"Thank you everyone. It brings me to tears with the amount of support, well wishes and love you have provided, I am very grateful," he wrote at the time. "Chemotherapy has been successful. I have my last drug treatment next week followed by radiation three weeks after."

However, by May 2017, his wife revealed to fans that his cancer had metastasized. "From the bottom of my heart I thank you for the support you provide me," the actor wrote to Instagram followers in June 2017. "You give me hope and you all move me."

The actor shared his last Instagram post on June 25, an inspirational message that read: 'At the end of every storm there is a rainbow of hope'.

In a statement in March, Stefansson said, "It's not until they tell you you're going to die soon that you realize how short life is. Time is the most valuable thing in life because it never comes back. And whether you spend it in the arms of a loved one or alone in a prison-cell, life is what you make of it. Dream big."

Stefán Karl Stefánsson told fans to 'dream big' as he took to Twitter to announce his devastation as the disease returned, telling his followers that it's inoperable.

He's best known for playing the villainous Robbie Rotten in the iconic children's show.

He wrote in an emotional statement: "It’s not until they tell you you’re going to die soon that you realize how short life is. Time is the most valuable thing in life because it never comes back. And whether you spend it in the arms of a loved one or alone in a prison-cell, life is what you make of it. Dream big."

A fan quickly asked: "Wait.....It's BACK!?"

And Stefán, 42, responded: "Unfortunately it's back and this time they can't operate on it."

The married star, who has three children, later added: "Yesterday, no one could tell what would happen today, only that today might come. Life is like that every minute, we are waiting for it, will it come or will it not, but why? We should always life now because now has come, life is here and only now, so go get it!"

He was inundated with support from his devastated fans.

"Stay strong," one told him.

While another said: "All my love goes out to you and your family. Make the time you got left count"

Stefán was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2016 and later had surgery on his liver. In 2016, after learning of his diagnosis, fans helped raise over $80,000 to help the actor in his fight against pancreatic cancer, with help from memes, including "We Are Number One."

He's been open about his battle with the disease, regularly sharing pictures of himself in hospital.

His wife, actress Steinunn Ólina Þorsteinsdóttir also posted a statement about her husband's diagnosis.

She said: "Even though I knew for a long time that this day would come, it's a difficult turning point.

"There is no cure for this. Now he will have to undergo chemotherapy to try to prolong his life and we hope that this will go as well is possibly can, to improve how he feels and to prolong his life."

She added: "His illness has had an impact on the whole family, naturally.

"Some days we feel very low, some days we are happy and are happy about all that we have accomplished together and lived together.

"Nobody can take that away from us, however this goes. Not even death itself."

Following Stefán breaking the tragic news, Julianna Rose Mauriello, who played Stephanie on LazyTown, posted a touching and emotional tribute to her former co-star on her official Instagram page:

That is what many fans of actor Stefan Karl, AKA "Robbie Rotten" from the hit children's show LazyTown have to say after raising over $80,000 to help the actor in his fight against pancreatic cancer.

LazyTown is an Icelandic educational musical comedy series that encourages kids to eat healthily and exercise. The programme features a cast and crew from Iceland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was created by Magnús Scheving, a gymnastics champion and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LazyTown Entertainment, who also has a lead role as "Sportacus" in the show. The show aired on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels around the world, among other stations globally.

There are many popular memes and YouTube videos that have been inspired by the show, but one song, in particular, has risen to recent popularity: "We Are Number One."



The song, starring Robbie Rotten, was remixed and remade several times by various content creators, each netting large amounts of views, some in the millions.



However, the fun turned to serious business once the internet learned of their favorite villain's plight. Stefan had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and he needed time to fight through chemotherapy, rest and heal.

Stefan and friends, in an effort to raise awareness and funds, took to GoFundMe and set a goal of $80,000. Since then, the internet has taken over in the best of ways.



Popularity grew, and as more support poured in, Stefan and friends found themselves in a whirlwind of "meme magic." A whirlwind that they came to embrace.



A Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), an official video posted to the official LazyTown YouTube page, and the sharing of new videos and content by the LazyTown social media team showed a solidarity behind Stefan and his fight.

Eventually, Stefan and friends hosted a Facebook LIVE event, singing the song that had brought joy to so many.



"On December 11th we hosted a live event with a reunion of the cast members of Lazy Town performing the song We Are Number One.

More then 50.000 people watched the event in a live streaming on Facebook. "This is going down in history".

This event was hosted by Stefan Karl Stefansson the actor who played Robbie Rotten in the kids TV show Lazy Town and Lazy Town composer Mani Svavarsson.

This event was organized to honor all the meme artists and fans out there who have made the song WE ARE NUMBER ONE legendary, also as a big thank you to all the supporters who have donated to Stefan Karl in his cancer battle through his https://www.gofundme.com/2tm9tqk page set up by his friends."

Not long after the LIVE event, the goal of $80,000 was reached!

On the GoFundMe page set up by friends of Stefan, the following story was posted:

"As Robbie Rotten on LazyTown, has given laughter to children around the world. He created a foundation to help stop bullying. He is a tireless advocate for special needs children.

And now Stefan Karl needs our help.

Stefan has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The operation he has had will prevent him from working for up to a year.

We want him to use that year to rest and recuperate so that he can once again return to what he does best - making kids smile all over planet Earth.

We are raising funds to help Stefan and his family survive the coming year. Not only will they need assistance with medical bills, but it's important that Stefan be allowed to heal his body and spirit without the additional burden of financial need.

We appreciate any amount of gift you are able to extend to Stefan and his family. As he moves from this difficult time toward a full recovery, we ask for your generosity, your prayers and good wishes.

As Robbie Rotten would ask, "Why are those people making all that noise!?"
