Nickelodeon Shutters Nick App and Nick Jr. App

Paramount Global has announced that it'll be shutting down the Nick App, Nickelodeon's dedicated streaming app.

Nick App

The news follows Paramount announcing yesterday (Dec. 6) that they'll also be discontinuing the Comedy Central, MTV and Paramount Network apps.

While the Nick App remains live now, an in-app message alerting to the app's closedown reads: "We're saying goodbye to the Nick App. Don't worry - you can watch Nickelodeon anytime through your TV provider or on http://Nick.com. You can also find many Nick movies, shows and more on Paramount+."

Update (2/1) - Paramount officially closed down many of its apps, including the Nick App and Nick Jr. App, on January 31. The Nick App now features the message: "Barnacles, There's Nothing Here... We've said goodbye to the Nick App. Don't worry - you can watch Nickelodeon anytime through your TV provider or on Nick.com. You can also find many Nick movies, shows and more on Paramount+."

Meanwhile, the Comedy Central App now loads the following message: "The Comedy Central App Is No Longer Available". The message adds: "It's not you, it's us. But you can still watch Comedy Central through your TV provider or on CC.com. You can also find many seasons on Paramount+."

The company shut the apps down because of low adoption and usage, with most viewers still checking out the programming through cable or video on demand, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Nick Jr. App closedown

Launched in February 2013, the free Nick App was a branded experience that allowed kids to interact with Nick in unprecedented ways, offering kids instant and on-demand access to more than 1,000 pieces of Nickelodeon-themed content. It included short-form videos of original skits, sketch and comedic bits; behind-the-scenes clips and photos from Nick stars and animated characters; as well as kid polls and newly created games, and allowed kids and families to watch full episodes through their pay-TV subscription.

International variants of the app were also launched under the name Nick Play (Nickelodeon Play), however, these have also been shut down.

'Cloudscape' Developer Once Made An Unreleased Mobile Game for Nickelodeon

Video game designer Christopher Gottron, the owner and developer at Konitama LLC, has revealed that he once made a mobile game for Nickelodeon, which unfortunately was never released!

In a recent interview with Game Rant to talk about Konitama's debut game Cloudscape and its Kickstarter campaign, Gottron talked about his storied career at studios like Nickelodeon and DreamWorks, and opened up about his experiences and what he learnt along the way:

"I worked as a Digital Animator on a wide range of shows, such as SpongeBob, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Penguins of Madagascar, Fairly Odd Parents, T.U.F.F. Puppy, and more. I made the car in the T.U.F.F. Puppy opening sequence [pictured blow]! At Nickelodeon I refined my skills as an animator both in 3D and 2D, along with 3D modeling, rigging, lighting, compositing, and special effects.

"I eventually ended up over at DreamWorks Animation Television where I worked on a lot of the Netflix shows. I worked on Voltron, She-Ra, King [Julien], Kipo and the Wonderbeasts, and funnily enough, another version of Kung Fu Panda. I had pretty much the same role at DreamWorks as I did at Nickelodeon, so it was more animation and compositing there.

"I learned a ton of different software programs for animation and effects work, and had to wear many hats. Oddly enough, I ended up scripting quite a few plug-ins and tools for software to use internally at the studio, so I managed to get a bit of coding in at my job as well.

"My experience at these studios helped me strengthen my overall skills as an artist, take on a lot of interesting challenges, and learn how to hit critical deadlines."

Later in the interview, Gottron talked about when he developed an unreleased Nickelodeon mobile game for the Nick App:

"Around my fourth year with Nickelodeon, our small animation department started trying out different things to see how we could be of further use to the studio. Since I really wanted to make video games, I suggested we try to make some type of game.

"I ended up working as a solo developer (with some art and sound assets provided to me), and I prototyped a handful of games. We finally settled on a sort of arcade-style game where you would fling brains at zombies. I spent a few weeks putting that together and coming up with the design and overall gameplay.

"The end result was a pretty fun little arcade game, and people around the office ended up playing it a lot and attempting to beat each other's high scores. The game was designed for the Nick mobile app, but unfortunately I don't think it ever actually made it on the platform. It was a great learning experience nonetheless."

You can read Gottron's interview with Game Rant in full at gamerant.com.

Cloudscape is currently in development for PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox.

Nickelodeon Shutters Nick Play App in the U.K.

Nickelodeon has discontinued the Nickelodeon Play app in the U.K.

Launched in the U.K. in November 2013 (originally titled the Nick App), the award-winning free Nickelodeon-branded app was aimed towards 6-12 year-olds and offered users short-form videos clips, games, and surprise elements via the Do Not Touch button from the network’s popular live action and animated series, with new content added regularly. Virgin Media customers could also unlock full episodes. The app, available to download for iOS and Android devices via the App Store and Google Play store, was later renamed Nick Play and integrated into the Viacom Play Plex suite of apps.

Users of the Nick Play app will still be able to find all the Nickelodeon content they love to watch and play on Nickelodeon UK's official YouTube channel, as well as full episodes on nick.co.uk and nicktoons.co.uk.

The Nick Play app has been removed from the Apple App Store search engine, however, the app continues to load as normal.

It also looks like Nick Jr. Play, Nick Play's sister app for preschoolers, has also shutdown, with the app no longer appearing in the Apple App Store search engine. Full episodes have moved online to nickjr.co.uk.

The news follows ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) closing the Nick Play app in certain regions, including in the Netherlands, Latin America and Brazil, and Australia and New Zealand, with content either moving online or to VOD partners. It's currently unclear whether the future of U.S. version of the service, the Nick App, will remain operational.

Nickelodeon Starts to Discontinue Nickelodeon Play App Internationally

Nickelodeon Benelux (BLX) has announced that Nickelodeon will be discontinuing the Nickelodeon Play app in the Netherlands (Nederland) in the New Year.

Launched in the Netherlands in November 2016 as part of the Viacom Play Plex, the award-winning free Nickelodeon-branded app is aimed towards 6-12 year-olds and offers videos clips, full episodes, games, and surprise elements from the network’s popular live action and animated series, with new content is added regularly.

Users of the Nick Play app will still be able to find all the Nickelodeon content they love to watch and play on Nickelodeon Nederland's official fully-responsive website, nickelodeon.nl, designed to work across all devices, with Nickelodeon providing instructions on how to make a bookmark to the website on their mobile devices.

The news follows Nickelodeon refreshing its Dutch website in April 2020, adopting the 'bare-bones' design of its U.S. counterpart, nick.com, however, keeping elements such as full-length episodes of popular shows.

Interestingly, Nickelodeon USA re-added full-length episodes after a two-year absence on December 17, 2020. It's currently unknown whether Nickelodeon will be closing the Nick Play app (or Nick App in the U.S.) in other countries and territories the app is currently available, including in the U.K., Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Latin America and Brazil, Poland, and Central & Eastern Europe, most of which have adopted nick.com's website design.

Update (23/12) - It looks like Nickelodeon is closing the Nick Play app in several markets, including in Latin America and Brazil (along with MTV Play and Comedy Central Play) and in Australia and New Zealand. For the latter, all shows will be moving on to Foxtel (Australia) and Sky (New Zealand). Nick Latin America and Nick Brazil recently relaunched their websites using Nick USA's website framework, whilst Nick Australia's website used the previous 'grid' style. Meanwhile, in the UK, the Nick Play app seems to have been removed from the Apple App Store. It's still available on Google Play.

Update (18/1/21) - Nickelodeon today (Sunday 17th January 2021) discontinued the Nickelodeon Play app in Brazil.

Update (21/1/21) - Nickelodeon has discontinued the Nickelodeon Play app in the U.K., with content moving online and to the channel's official YouTube channel. For more information, click here.

Official Nickelodeon Benelux announcement:

  • Klaar is kees!

Nickelodeon Launches 'The Astronauts' Show Pages on Nick.com and the Nick App

Ahead of Nickelodeon airing an out-of-this-world first look at the network's brand new live-action series The Astronauts during Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together, airing Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) across Nick, Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr., Nickelodeon today unveiled their official The Astronauts show website on nick.com and show page on the Nick App, giving us a first look at the show's cast and official logo!

Nickelodeon is setting off into new territory with the greenlight of The Astronauts, a brand-new, live-action series following a group of kids who embark on the adventure of a lifetime when they are mistakenly launched into space. Marking Nickelodeon’s first production with Imagine Kids+Family, The Astronauts (10 episodes) was produced in Vancouver, Canada, with a premiere slated for this summer.

The Astronauts stands as one of the most ambitious and cinematic stories Nickelodeon has ever told, and we are so proud to partner with Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, and Stephanie Sperber at their Kids+Family division, on this new series,” said Brian Robbins, President, Kids & Family Entertainment, ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks. “Through Imagine’s ability to create fully relatable characters and put them into big, cinematic adventures, The Astronauts is well positioned to hit home with both kids and parents who want to experience this kind of great storytelling together.”

“Nickelodeon has been the gold standard in kids’ entertainment for a long time, and that’s because they have a natural sense of how to develop talent and nurture ideas to make the best shows possible,” said Ron Howard. “After talking to Brian Robbins about how Imagine’s legacy in space could be brought to Nickelodeon, it was obvious that they wanted to take big creative swings with us on this series and that’s incredibly exciting.”

In The Astronauts, the spaceship Odyssey II is set to launch to investigate a mysterious asteroid passing by Earth. A group of kids who gathered to watch the lift-off sneak onto the empty ship with their parent’s security clearance before the event, and accidentally initiate the launch sequence. Blasting off into space with no proper training, a malfunctioning onboard AI system, and their parents watching from Earth, the kids embark on a journey of survival using only their smarts and friendship as tools.

The group traveling together through space are: Samantha “Samy” Sawyer-Wei, played by Miya Cech (Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Always Be My Maybe); Elliott Combs, played by Bryce Gheisar (Wonder, A Dog’s Purpose); Martin Taylor, played by Keith L. Williams (Good Boys, The Last Man on Earth); Doria Taylor, played by Kayden Grace Swan (A Black Lady Sketch Show); and Will Rivers, played by Ben Daon (Child’s Play). Matilda, the ship’s onboard AI system is voiced by Paige Howard (The Employer, Adventureland).

The Astronauts is executive produced by Imagine Entertainment Chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and Imagine Kids+Family President Stephanie Sperber. Executive producer Daniel Knauf (Carnivàle, The Blacklist) also serves as writer and showrunner. The series is directed by DGA Award nominee Dean Israelite (Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Power Rangers movie, Project Almanac) who also serves as an executive producer, Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, The Orville), and Marcus Stokes (Criminal Minds, The Flash, 911). Will Davis serves as creative executive for Imagine Kids+Family.

Production of The Astronauts for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Scripted Content for Nickelodeon. Brian Banks serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

Imagine has a rich history telling stories rooted in space adventure, including the multiple Academy Award-winning film Apollo 13 (celebrating its 25th anniversary this year), the hybrid docuseries Mars for NatGeo, and the Emmy Award-winning series From The Earth To The Moon for HBO. Imagine Kids+Family (IKF), run by President Stephanie Sperber, was launched in 2019 to develop high-quality content for kids and families with an eye toward building global franchises. Since its launch, IKF has invested in and is developing The Tiny Chef; has partnered with James Patterson’s kid imprint Jimmy Books to develop several beloved children’s books for film and television; has secured the rights to the Kalamata’s Kitchen franchise; and has partnered with the preeminent picture magazine LIFE, to develop kids content, just to name few.

The Astronauts underscores a key element of Nickelodeon's content strategy, to create co-viewing opportunities for today's kids and parents who increasingly use TV time as family time and are looking for entertainment options holding appeal for everyone. Nick's new content slate is informed by insights into today's kids, who: are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

Nickelodeon greenlit The Astronauts to series in June 2019.

Viewers can catch a super sneak peek of The Astronauts during Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together, airing Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) across Nick, Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr.

(ET/PT), with two wild weeks of celebrity sneak peek episodes featuring Nickelodeon stars and their biggest super fans. Hosted by Daniella Monet (Victorious), and shot against the tropical landscape of Hawaii, teams go head-to-head competing in all-new adrenaline-pumping challenges. The Nick stars play for charity and help their super fans vie for the ultimate prize—a paradise vacation.

The stakes have risen as each show includes contestants sliding down an all-new 45 foot volcano-themed water slide, and zipping across the hotel lagoon on a brand-new 700 foot zip-line. Some of the newly created and funny challenges include: Volca-Nose--teams climb up of a 50-foot slimy slide to plug five oozing nostrils of a baby volcano; Sandwich Islands--teams race against time by running across water mats with oversized ingredients to create giant sandwiches and deliver them to hangry guests; and Crazy Bat Shoot--teams use giant sling shots to fling rubber bats at their teammates across the lagoon.

Nickelodeon stars include: Jack Griffo, Kira Kosarin, Addison Riecke, Audrey Whitby and Diego Velazquez from The Thundermans; Breanna Yde, Jade Pettyjohn, Aidan Miner, Lance Lim and Ricardo Hurtado from School of Rock; Benjamin Flores Jr., Thomas Kuc, Cree Cicchino and Madisyn Shipman from Game Shakers; and Lizzy Greene, Kyla-Drew Simmons and Casey Simpson from Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn.

Paradise Run ranked #1 in its time slot with kids 6-11 across all TV through the season one and two run.

Paradise Run is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment’s Scott A. Stone, producer of Nickelodeon’s Emmy®-nominated BrainSurge, and a creator of the classic Nick gameshow Legends of the Hidden Temple. Marcus Fox also serves as executive producer.

Nickelodeon stars Casey Simpson (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) and Breanna Yde (Nickelodeon’s School of Rock) join Russell Roberts (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and newcomers AJ Rivera and Klarke Pipkin in the fantastical adventure about a group of friends whose overnight stay in their town’s new high-tech library, where the books literally come alive, turns into a daring, dangerous adventure of escape. The book, originally published in 2013 by Random House Children’s Books, boasts a 109-week run on the New York Times Best-Seller list.

Twelve will enter, but only one will win the night! World-renowned gamemaker Luigi Lemoncello (Russell Roberts) has built his latest creation--a extraordinary new state-of-the-art library filled with whimsical and eccentric rooms, where hardcover books fly kids to shelves in the sky, and massive doors open into fantastical worlds. Kyle Keeley (Casey Simpson), Lemoncello’s biggest fan, is chosen to be one of the first to experience the fun, along with his best friend Akimi (Breanna Yde), a bookworm named Sierra (Klarke Pipkin), a goofball named Andrew Peckleman (A.J. Luis Rivera Jr.), his rival Charles Chiltington (Ty Nicolas Consiglio), and others. The kids must use their wits to complete riddles and collect clues that lead them out of this unique playground of imagination. When excitement turns to jeopardy, this world of wonder begins to spiral out of control as literary characters run amok and chaos ensues. It’s up to the kids to make everything right again or else they won’t be the only ones escaping.

Nick USA's brand-new official Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library website currently features information about Nickelodeon's all-new film and a super sneak-peek from the movie! In the fantastic first-look, titled "First Puzzle": It's the first puzzle for the kids to solve! Do you think they will solve it in time to escape?

Nickelodeon’s original TV movies are a key part of the network’s content mix, creating vehicles for Nickelodeon’s stars to be seen in new and different roles and stories. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library joins Nickelodeon’s original TV movie slate, which includes three upcoming original TV movies--Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie and Tiny Christmas, both set to premiere this fall and Blurt starring Henry Danger’s Jace Norman and internet sensation JoJo Siwa, scheduled to air early 2018.

Join in on the adventure by using #MrLemoncellosLibrary and following @Nickelodeon on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter for movie updates and sneak peeks.

Chris Grabenstein’s novels with Random House Children’s Books have more than one million copies in print and hundreds of weeks combined on the New York Times bestseller list. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library has spent over 100 weeks on the bestseller list, received nominations for 42 state award lists, and is published in 19 countries and in 19 languages throughout the world. Grabenstein's additional middle-grade novels include Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics, The Island of Dr. Libris, Welcome to Wonderland: Home Sweet Motel, Welcome to Wonderland: Beach Party Surf Monkey, and the forthcoming third Lemoncello Book, Lemoncello’s Great Library Race, which will be published on Oct. 10.

Jim Head, Scott McAboy and Michael Sammaciccia serve as executive producers. Amy Sydorick serves as producer. The TV movie is written by Brian Jarvis & Jim Freeman and Alex Reid, and was directed by Scott McAboy (Splitting Adam).
