Student Interviews Team GB Paralympians For New Nickelodeon UK Series Celebrating SpongeBob's 25th Anniversary

Kieran Logendra, a Second Year Drama scholar, has had an exciting few weeks. As well as a busy school schedule, Kieran works professionally as an actor and presenter. Recently, he has been working with kids’ channel Nickelodeon UK on an exciting series ahead of The Paralympic Games of Paris 2024 this summer.

Kieran Logendra

Kieran explained to his school paper, “I’ve worked with Nickelodeon a few times before, and spent a week last summer filming as a co-host for Nick’s Guide To…  The latest bit of filming I’ve done is for the SpongeBob’s 25th Anniversary project with the GB Paralympics team.

“I’m one of a few hosts who interview Paralympians and have a go at some para-sports. Most of these shoots have involved travelling to the GB teams’ training sites, filming an introduction with a co-host, interviewing the Paralympian and having some time with them, where they teach us the sport and techniques.

“I can’t reveal any of the athletes’ names until the programmes come out, but my favourite interview was with a para-swimmer. She was really fun and gave me some tips on how to improve my swimming. The whole day was shot in the pool, so it was really interesting to see how the film crew filmed underwater and above us with a crane!

“I’ve loved getting the chance to meet these determined Paralympians, whose journeys are so inspiring to me. For example, when I met a Paralympian archer – she told me about how everyone told her she couldn’t do archery because of her disability (she was born with a short left arm). Even though lots of people told her she couldn’t, she created a different way of holding the bow and became the first person with that disability to try archery. She is also really keen on encouraging other people with disabilities to try archery.”

Kieran Logendra

It sounds like an incredible experience, and we wondered if there were any downsides to the job? Kieran admits, “The only challenging bit of the filming was the early starts and long journeys to get to the shooting locations, which were all over the country, but the experiences were definitely worth it!”

We’re looking forward to seeing Kieran in action when his interviews come out on Nickelodeon ahead of The Paralympic Games of Paris 2024 which run from 28 August until 8 September.

Kieran says, “Watch out for the colourful surprise at the end the archery shoot!”

Nickelodeon's Nick News Tackles Mounting Mental Health Crisis Among Kids in Candid Roundtable Discussion

Additional segments include a lesson about the economy from U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen and a look at what it takes to prep for Olympic gold with the U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., February 23, 2022 – Nickelodeon’s award-winning Nick News shone a spotlight on the crucial topic of kids and mental health in a brand-new episode that debuted Wednesday, February 16 on Nickelodeon. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy joined a group of middle schoolers for an open roundtable discussion where the kids shared personal stories of how they manage their mental wellness and get advice from the nation’s top doctor on how to cope with anxiety and stress.

Hosted by CBS News Correspondent Vladimir Duthiers, this half-hour installment of Nick News also included kid journalist Rory Hu, reporting from Washington, D.C., offering viewers an insider’s look at the U.S. Mint, and a wide-ranging interview with U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, covering everything from the current state of the U.S. Economy to the new American Women Quarters Program, which celebrates the accomplishments and contributions made by women to the development and history of our country. This year’s inaugural collection features the likenesses of Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren and Anna May Wong.

“The last two years have been challenging, but most especially for kids across the country who have had to contend with a pandemic, economic uncertainty, a fraught political landscape and so much more”, said Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, Vice President of News Programming, Nickelodeon and Executive Producer of Nick News. “In this episode of Nick News, we do what we’re aiming to do, give kids a platform to voice their thoughts and feelings, and because knowledge is not only power but empowering, we bring in the experts U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen to inform and connect our audience to vital resources.”

Additionally, CBS News’ Jamie Yuccas took viewers into the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team training facility outside Minneapolis, Minnesota to showcase the grit and determination this team of remarkable athletes will tap into as they defend their 2018 Olympic gold medal win at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Nick News closed with a personal message of solidarity from 2022 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Raven Saunders, letting kids know that if they struggle with anxiety, stress or any mental health issues they are not alone, and she knows firsthand that help and resources are out there for those in need.

Following the premiere on Nickelodeon, this new episode of Nick News is available on Nick.com, Nick App and Nick On Demand beginning Thursday, February 17.

Nickelodeon’s Nick News has won 10 Emmys, a Peabody, a Columbia DuPont, and the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for Journalistic Excellence, the first and only time it was given to a children’s program. The show originally aired for 25 years, ending with the retirement of creator and original host Linda Ellerbee in 2016. Created with a core ethos of respecting its kid audience, the show explained world events in a direct way, and always ensured kids were given a platform to voice their opinions and a safe place to question the world. Nick News made its return in June 2020 with a special hour-long presentation Kids, Race and Unity: A Nick News Special, hosted by global superstar Alicia Keys. Nick News is executive produced by Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, Vice President of News Programming, Nickelodeon and Executive Producer of Nick News.

One Olympic Athlete Is Channelling Aang with an 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Haircut

The Olympics have begun in Tokyo, and that means the world's best athletes are competing to win a medal in their sport. For some, this journey is all about strict training, but there are plenty who inject a bit of fun into their goal. And thanks to Dutch athlete Kiran Badloe, it seems Aang has been brought into the Tokyo Olympics.

Photo: Sailing Energy.

The windsurfer hit up Instagram in light of the Summer Games getting underway, and it was there he paid tribute to Aang. Badloe says he hopes to ride the winds as masterfully as Aang does in Avatar: The Last Airbender, so there is only one thing he could do. Obviously, Badloe had to cut and dye his hair to mimic Aang's airbender tattoo.

"This haircut is a tribute to the one and only true wind master. The avatar, the last air bender known to be alive. I hope the spirit of this great warrior gives me the power to sail well this week and use the wind in my favor. One day I dream of become a master of the wind myself, a true air bender," Badloe wrote.

Over on Instagram, one of the co-creators of Avatar wished Badloe the best of the luck. Bryan Konietzko told the windsurfer to be the leaf, so we hope the Dutch athlete makes good on that advice!

Of course, Aang and the whole gang will be cheering this windsurfer on from afar. The group is busy these days thanks to a recent revival of the franchise. Not long ago, it was announced Nickelodeon has developed a studio specifically for Avatar content, and a animated movie is the first project on the table. And if Badloe is lucky, maybe he can make a special cameo in the upcoming flick!

What do you think of this athlete's Avatar haircut? Do you think Badloe could challenge Aang with their moves? Share your thoughts with me in the comments section below or hit me up on Twitter @DailyNickNews!

From Reuters:

Sailing-'Last Airbender' Badloe in control for final RS:X gold

ENOSHIMA, Japan, July 30 (Reuters) - A haircut that pays homage to a cartoon character has won Kiran Badloe almost as many fans as his windsurfing in Tokyo, and on Saturday the Dutchman is set to make history by winning the last Olympic gold medal in the RS:X class.

The 26-year-old has swept all before him in a windsurfing category that will be replaced at the 2024 Games in Paris by the IQ Foil, all with a blue arrow inspired by Aang, a character in TV cartoon series "Avatar: The Last Airbender", shaved into his otherwise blonde head.

"It's about a kid that controls the wind, and he needs to control all different kinds of elements of nature in order to do something great, and I'm doing the same here," Badloe told Reuters ahead of the medal race.

"I need to be in tune with the wind and in tune with the water and everything around, and hopefully that leads me to something great."

Badloe goes into Saturday's 10-man medal race with a 19-point lead over Thomas Goyard of France in second. That means Badloe could finish last and still win gold, with only a disqualification capable of stopping him.

The Dutchman said it was his ability to adapt that made him stand out from the rest at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour.

"I think I'm just all-round. In all of the conditions we had I was able to be up there. In the lighter stuff in the beginning, in the shifty offshore stuff we had, and then in the onshore stable breeze we had the last couple of days," he said.

"I was always close enough to the front to keep solid numbers, so I think the fact that I was all-round during the whole week is what put me in this position."

The gold medal will be the third in a row for the Netherlands, with Dorian van Rijsselberghe winning in 2012 and 2016 before losing out to Badloe in the qualification process for Tokyo.

"This is the highlight of my career so far," Badloe said. "I've won the last three world championships, but it's always something special about an Olympics, they happen once every four years."

Asked if his aerodynamic haircut had helped him in Tokyo, where he won five of the 10 opening races to leave him in a virtually unassailable gold medal position, Badloe smiled broadly.

"I have been able to piece something together in these Olympics races, so I think it worked in my favour," he said.

Mexico's Synchronized Swimmers Paid Tribute to 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' with Their Embellished Olympic Leotards

Mexico's Synchronized Swimmers Paid Tribute to ATLA With Their Embellished Olympic Leotards

Olympic gymnasts aren't the only ones with a dazzling sense of style. On Aug. 2, day 10 of the Olympic Games, Mexican synchronized swimming duo Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jiménez García pulled out all the stops with their embellished leotards, which included a subtle but heartfelt nod to Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Image Source: Getty / Al Bello

The black and white sheer outfits, designed by Mexican brand Gilling Activewear, each featured the koi fish Tui and La, known respectively as the moon spirit and fish spirit in the Nickelodeon show. In the season one finale of the cartoon, it's revealed that Tui and La, like the ancient Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, maintain balance on earth with their "eternal dance of push and pull." Just like the koi fish, the duo demonstrated an elegant harmony with their mesmerising underwater routine, making their outfits fun and fitting for the competition.

The back of Diosdado and Jiménez García's outfits show the four elements — water, earth, fire, and air — stylized as they are in the TV show and covered in rhinestones. Short of actually making water float around the room, fans are convinced this may be proof that they're both secretly waterbenders. So, yeah, I think Aang and the "gaang" would be highly impressed. See if you can spot the Avatar: The Last Airbender refrences from all angles ahead.

Diosdado and García aren't the only Olympians to channel Avatar: The Last Airbender at the Tokyo Olympics - Dutch athlete Kiran Badloe sported a haircut inspired by Avatar Aang. Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena also wore SpongeBob and Patrick socks!

EJ Obiena Takes SpongeBob and Patrick to New Heights at the Tokyo Olympics

EJ Obiena recently had the honor of making it to the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Men’s Pole Vault finals, however, there's another reason Filipino pole vaulter has been turning heads during the Olympic games - he competed wearing an odd pair of SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star socks!

Art by James Patrick Cruz; Photo from Reuters/Aleksandra Szmigiel and Varsitarian

Competing at the pinnacle of any sports competition comes with a baggage of pressure, so EJ wore a mismatched pair of socks on August 3 to give him comfort. “I take myself a little bit too seriously because this is a competition, this is something that seems like something very serious,” said Obiena in the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association press conference, a day after the competition.

“At the end of the day, it’s a sport, it’s a game. I should enjoy it, I should not take it too seriously, that’s why I put on those socks as a reminder to not think about it too much. Enjoy, have fun,” Obiena added.

Given a chance, he would have wanted to wear socks inspired by anime My Hero Academia or Naruto, but regulations didn’t allow him to buy one.

Despite this, the two beloved Nickelodeon characters were well welcomed by Filipino viewers.

“It’s the socks that sold it for me tho,” a Twitter user said with a Philippine flag emoji.

“Great run EJ! Now, can I have your socks,” another Twitter user wrote.

“SpongeBob socks ratioed the whole Olympics,” tweeted another fan.

“Let’s take a moment to appreciate EJ Obiena’s socks. Deserved their own gold medal tbh #Olympics,” an online user said in a post.

Even House Rep. Sarah Elago (Kabataan party-list) noticed the funky socks worn by the Olympian and cheered, “Go, go, go EJ Obiena! Ang cute ng socks po.”

Another social media user congratulated Obiena for his performance and noticed that Obiena’s socks may have been a reference in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, where SpongeBob and Patrick compete in the Deep Fry Pole Vault in the Fry Cook Games.

If you’re also looking for the same pair of socks worn by the pole vaulter, Lifestyle brand H&M Philippines confirmed that it is from its collection in collaboration with SpongeBob.

SpongeBob and Patrick aren't the only Nick characters honored at the Tokyo Olympics - Dutch athlete Kiran Badloe sported a haircut inspired by Avatar Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender!

Obiena unfortunately failed to bring home a medal after falling short to hurdle the 5.80 meters.
