Paramount Appoints Jeremy Kramer as President of Paramount Players

Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group President Emma Watts has hired former 20th Century Studios executive Jeremy Kramer as president of Paramount Players, Variety reports.

The news follows reports earlier this month that Kramer was circling the post. Paramount Players was created as a genre label by Brian Robbins, the founder and former CEO of AwesomenessTV. Robbins left the studio to run Nickelodeon in 2018.

The hiring of Kramer, who will report to Watts, was announced Tuesday, October 20. He will oversee the films made under the Paramount Players label, which has the task of creating genre films from “unique, contemporary” voices and properties. Ashley Brucks, who previously served as executive vice president of production for Paramount Pictures, will be moving to Paramount Players as senior executive vice president of production.

“Jeremy has a proven track record of nurturing talent, both established and new, supporting their vision and helping them execute at the highest level — from Let’s Be Cops to Kingsman to Deadpool,” Watts said. “There’s isn’t a movie that he’s worked on that he hasn’t made better. The challenges of ensuring that Paramount Players grows and addresses the demands of our various audiences are formidable and we know that Jeremy is up to this task and we welcome him to our team.”

Kramer began his career as an independent producer producing Noah Baumbach’s directorial debut Kicking and Screaming in 1995. His career started at MPCA and Orion, then in 1998 he became senior vice president of production at Miramax Films. In 2004 joined DreamWorks, where he worked closely with Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld’s Red Hour Films.

Kramer returned to producing as a partner at Red Hour. In 2010, Watts brought Kramer back into the studio world as an executive vice president of production at 20th Century Fox. During his career, Kramer has overseen more than 50 films including She’s All That, Blades of Glory, Disturbia, Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, both Deadpool movies and most recently, the latest installment of the Kingsman franchise.

Kramer also spearheaded Fox’s first projects produced for streaming services, including the Lil Rel Howery and John Cena comedy Vacation Friends for Hulu, as well as Home Alone for Disney Plus.

“My years working with Emma and Jim [Gianopulos, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures] at Fox were some of the most enjoyable and rewarding days I’ve had in the film business, and I am fortunate and excited to make movies with them again,” says Kramer. “We’re excited to build a slate of commercial movies that will empower new voices and experienced filmmakers to deliver the original movies that audiences crave.”

Bruck developed and oversaw A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II. She also oversaw the remake of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary and Alex Aja’s Crawl. She was the studio executive who founded, championed and oversaw the micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity franchise. Currently, she is supervising for Paramount the latest chapter in the Scream series, as well as The Lost City of D, starring Sandra Bullock, and the big screen musical adaptation of Mean Girls.

Launched in 2017, Paramount Players has a mandate to develop and produce features in conjunction with ViacomCBS-owned brands such as Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and BET. Films from the Paramount Players label so far include Dora and the Lost City of Gold, based on Nickelodeon's beloved animated preschool series Dora the Explorer, Playing With Fire starring John Cena, What Men Want, Body Cam. A live-action/CGI-hybrid Rugrats movie was also in the works, but has since been shelved. The label was also slated to revive and produce a theatrical version of Nickelodeon's fan-favorite horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?, however, Nickelodeon later decided that the revival would work better as a TV miniseries, which was renewed for a second season earlier this year.

Paramount Pictures Looking to Revive Paramount Players Label

Paramount Pictures is getting ready to rev up Paramount Players, the division of the movie studio that was formed around Brian Robbins in 2017 to generate niche, genre and cutting edge films. It hasn’t had a president, or much output, since the former CEO of AwesomenessTV left to run Nickelodeon in 2018.

Emma Watts is looking to revive the label and is down to a few candidates to run it. Deadline hears that Jeremy Kramer, an exec who worked with Watts at Fox and who is now at Disney, is atop the leader board. No comment from Paramount, which is also looking to fill the production president post and word is another exec who worked with Watts at Fox, Mike Ireland, is rumored as a contender for that job.

Motion picture group president Emma Watts Paramount in June after a long run at Fox. Watts had soured on the direction that Fox was taking after it was purchased by The Walt Disney Company and was convinced to make the leap by Paramount chairman Jim Gianopulos, the former Fox studios chief. Other Fox veterans to follow Gianopulos to Paramount include distribution head Chris Aronson and global communications head Chris Petrikin.

Watts is also looking to hire a new president at Paramount and has been talking to candidates, Variety is reporting. Mike Ireland, a senior VP of production at Fox and another former colleague of Watts, is a contender for the job. It’s a little unclear how that job would ultimately manifest and the position could be a co-president role.

Before joining Fox in 2010, Kramer was a partner with Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld at Red Hour Films. He also worked with Noah Baumbach and was an executive at Miramax.

Chess pieces are still being moved around at Paramount after Elizabeth Raposo to exit Paramount's president of production post last month.

Check out an exclusive sneak peek of Playing With Fire, starring John Cena (Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader), Keegan-Michael Key, and John Leguizamo, in theaters November 8th. Rated PG.

The film stars Cena as a firefighter leading an elite team called the Smoke Jumpers, who rescue a trio of siblings from a cabin fire. The members of the team have to take care of the three kids until their parents can be found, leading to all sorts of shenanigans at the remote firehouse.

John Leguizamo and Keegan-Michael Key co-star in the film as two of the firefighters, and Deadpool's Brianna Hildebrand plays Brynn, the oldest of the three siblings. Judy Greer, Christian Convery, and Finley Rose Slater also star. Andy Fickman directed Playing With Fire, with a script from Dan Ewen and Matt Lieberman.

Playing With Fire comes from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players and Nickelodeon Movies. As expected based on Nickelodeon's involvement, it's a family comedy for viewers of all ages.

As Wildfires Burn, Paramount Preempts ‘Playing With Fire’ PR Disaster With Charitable Outreach

Wildfire season is a risky time to debut a comedy about kids who get separated from their parents during a wildfire.

With 10 wildfires currently burning throughout California, residents have become all too familiar with the concept of containment — a measurement that refers to the perimeter firefighters create around a blaze to prevent its spread. Marketing materials for Paramount’s November 8 firehouse comedy “Playing With Fire” starring John Cena uses the tagline “0% Contained.” Not exactly the association you want for a Nickelodeon-produced family movie.

However, Paramount appears acutely aware of the optics. With a plan for charitable donations and other outreach to real-life firefighters, the studio has gotten ahead of any critical commentary on the matter, most of which has long been planned, a representative said.

Cena plays a straight-laced fire superintendent who heads an elite team of smokejumpers who parachute into blazes. Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo, and Tyler Mane are part of the team who rescue three children (Brianna Hildebrand, Christian Convery, and Finley Rose Slater) in the path of a wildfire. They unwittingly become babysitters to the siblings when they’re unable to locate the children’s parents and find that kids, much like fires, are wild and unpredictable.

While the trailer for “Playing With Fire” suggests that the core of the movie is firefighters-meet-children-hijinks that happen in the safety of the firehouse, its release date is firmly ensconced in California’s fire season.

Cena took to Twitter Monday as the Getty Fire burned homes and prompted mandatory evacuations on the Westside of Los Angeles, announcing that he would donate $500,000 to a first-responder charity: All Paramount needed to do is choose one.

“Paramount is bringing you the movie ‘Playing with Fire and today I asked myself, ‘What can I do?,'” he said. “I have come up with an answer: I want Paramount to do me one favor — pick a charity. Pick a charity that aids our first responders as soon as possible and on behalf of ‘Playing with Fire’ and out of respect to the people I truly believe are heroes, my response will be to immediately donate half-a-million-dollars to that cause.”

Paramount responded about 30 minutes later, suggesting the California Fire Foundation, which offers emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and their communities, as well as the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, the city department’s nonprofit arm.

A Paramount representative said the studio has screened the movie for first responders and their families across the country, is giving away Halloween candy at firehouses in field markets, and will release a featurette next week to celebrate the work of smokejumpers.

With the family comedy Playing With Fire opening in movie theaters this weekend, we recently sent Collider’s “kid reporter” (otherwise known as my niece) to talk with John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianna Hildebrand and director Andy Fickman in New York City. 'Dora and the Lost City of Gold' Swings Onto Home Entertainment

After delighting kids of all ages with her small screen adventures, Dora the Explorer finally leapt out of animation and into the live-action world with Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players and Nickelodeon Movies' 2019 feature film Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Starring Nickelodeon alum Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School, Dora & Friends: Into the City, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Transformers: The Last Knight) as the titular hero, the all-star cast also included Michael Pena and Eva Longoria as Dora’s explorer parents. And if the voices of Boots the monkey and Swiper the fox sound familiar, that’s because they’re Danny Trejo and Benicio del Toro! And in addition to delighting fans of the long-running TV franchise, the film was also a hit with critics.

If you missed Dora’s summer movie expedition or just want to relive the adventure, you can now check it out from the comfort of your own home (way less vines to worry about). Here’s what you need to know!

Dora and the Lost City of Gold drops digitally on Tuesday, November 5. If you can’t wait for the Blu-ray release, you can buy it digitally right now at full price on your preferred digital video store, including iTunes, Amazon Prime Video (includes 4K UHD edition), FandangoNow, Google Play, Vudu, and more. If you can wait, though, you’ll be able to get a digital copy of the film along with the Blu-ray copy.


Don’t want to buy Dora and the Lost City of Gold and have it forever? You can always rent it for a fraction of the price. You’ll be able to rent the film digitally from Tuesday, November 19.

The Dora and the Lost City of Gold Blu-ray will be released on Tuesday, November 19. You’ll be able to purchase the film in two different ways: there’s the Blu-ray release (which also comes with a DVD and digital code) and the DVD release.

If you prefer DVDs to Blu-rays, you’ll be able to get a DVD copy of Dora and the Lost City of Gold on November 19. Also note that a DVD copy will also be available in the Blu-ray release (which also comes with a Blu-ray and digital copy of the film).

The Dora and the Lost City of Gold Blu-ray and digital releases all come with the same set of fun-filled bonus features. The special material includes a hilarious blooper reel, deleted and extended scenes, and featurettes about Dora, a look at Isabela Moner’s transformation into Dora, the film’s adventurous stunts, the animated sequence, and a tour of Dora’s jungle house. The DVD, however, won’t come with any special features.
