Network 10 And Paramount+ Announce New Local Comedy Series Ghosts Australia.

September 16, 2024

The First Local Iteration Of Critically Acclaimed British Sitcom Ghosts. Coming To Network 10 And Paramount+ In 2025.

Network 10 And Paramount+ Announce New Local Comedy Series 'Ghosts Australia'

Paramount Australia with BBC Studios Productions Australia, today announced that a new local adaptation of the beloved and critically acclaimed British sitcom Ghosts, will be landing down under with Ghosts Australia coming to Network 10 and Paramount+ in 2025.

This distinctive and highly spirited eight-part family comedy series will be set in a haunted country house full of hilarious new ghosts who are as chaotic, unpredictable and messy as Australian history itself.

New lovebirds Kate and Sean are about to jump into the hellscape that is the inner-city rental market, until Kate inherits a huge mansion in the country. Moving in together for the first time the young couple are attempting domestic bliss, but unbeknown to them, the house is haunted by a collection of needy spirits who carked it in Ramshead Manor over the past 200 years.

Optimistic go-getter Kate wants to revamp the manor into a boutique hotel, but loveable city boy Sean isn’t so sure, he isn’t built for country living. When a near-death experience gives Kate the power to see the ghosts, all their lives (and afterlives) will change forever.

As Kate and Sean navigate the milestones of a new relationship, building a business and dealing with the emotional needs of six neurotic ghosts, will their relationship survive or end up as dead as their new housemates?

Daniel Monaghan, SVP Content and Programming, Paramount Australia said: “Ghosts has been a smash hit in the UK and U.S. and has also attracted a very loyal fanbase here in Australia. With a stellar cast yet to be announced, we can’t wait to bring to life our very own series with an Aussie twist.”

Kylie Washington, General Manager and Creative Director, BBC Studios Productions Australia said: “Ghosts is one of those brilliant comedies which lends itself perfectly to localisation around the world, and we have our own, unique, Australian characters that reflect our very own history and culture. Our eclectic group of ghosts provides endless entertainment in this share-house comedy series that we hope Australian viewers will fall in love with.”

Ghosts Australia is a BBC Studios Productions Australia production for Network 10 and Paramount+. Based on the original series Ghosts, produced by Monumental Television in association with Them There for BBC One. Distributed by BBC Studios.

A German version of Ghosts was recently announced adding to the international success of the format which first aired on the BBC in the UK. The fifth and final series of the original UK version was the most-watched comedy in 2023, with the finale watched by over 6 million people in seven days.

The U.S. version is in production with its fourth season for CBS, which is produced by CBS Studios in association with Lionsgate Television and BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions and distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Channel 5 Axes Aussie Soap 'Neighbours' [Update: Australian Soap Cancelled]

Australian soap opera Neighbours has been a fixture in UK TV schedules for decades

Update (3/3) - Neighbours has been axed for good after Fremantle Media failed to find a new home for the Australian soap. Neighbours will end this summer after four decades on our screens.

Neighbours has been axed by its UK broadcaster Channel 5 - prompting moves to find a new production partner for the soap.

The beloved Australian soap opera, which follows the lives of residents on the fictional Ramsay Street, began airing in 1985 and has been pivotal in the careers of many A-list stars.

The likes of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce, Liam Hemsworth, and Margot Robbie all had big career starts on Ramsay Street.

Neighbours - which is the longest-running drama series on Australian television - is still reported to bring in 1.5 million viewers in the UK each day it airs. It had begun airing in the UK in 1986 on BBC One before moving to Channel 5 in 2008. The soap also aired briefly on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland in 2016.

Despite the soap’s continued popularity with UK viewers, UK broadcaster and soap production partner Channel 5 will no longer be airing or contributing to the soap from the summer onwards.

The news comes following a report that the soap was facing being axed by the broadcaster, which is understood to have been the primary financial backer for Neighbours.

A Channel 5 spokesperson confirmed to RadioTimes.com: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

“It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

“We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years. We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”

Despite the soap being axed by Channel 5, its Australian broadcaster Network 10 is optimistic that production company Fremantle will find a new production partner to help the show continue.

A Network 10 spokesperson said in a statement: “As outlined in the email to Neighbours cast and crew, it is our intention to continue our association with Neighbours if another broadcast partner comes forward.

“Network 10 has an ongoing commitment to the show, the cast and crew and is hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner.

“We will provide further updates as they become available.”

Network 10 and Channel 5 are both owned by ViacomCBS.

RadioTimes.com has reached out to production company Fremantle for further comment on this story.

Fans of the soap have already begun using #SaveNeighbours on social media in a bid to encourage support for the soap's survival.

Neighbours usually airs on Channel 5 on weekdays at 1.45pm. A repeat of the episode also airs later in the day at 5.30pm.

ViacomCBS Launches New FTA Network 10 Shake in Australia

Update (16/9) - 10 Shake launches at 6.00am on Sunday, 27 September 2020!

Official ViacomCBS Australia & New Zealand media release:

New channel will shake it up

Network 10 unveils 10 Shake. Transmitting soon.

Talk about having friends with benefits. When Network 10 hooked up with ViacomCBS, everyone knew it would shake things up. But, shake up a whole new channel? One could have only imagined.

Introducing 10 Shake.

Joining 10, 10 Bold and 10 Peach, 10 Shake will shake its way onto our television screens later this year.

The new channel will include a mix of shows for people aged 0-40 – think toddlers to teenagers, millennials to mamas, dreamers to dads.

It will be the only free-to-air channel on which Australians will have access to a shakin’ slate of the most popular kids’ programs including Bubble Guppies, Henry Danger and READY SET DANCE.

10 Shake will also have some of the most talked about, most tweeted about and most meme-able shows in the world – Catfish: The TV Show, The Charlotte Show and The Late Late Show With James Corden – that will leave anyone totally shook!

The breakdown is simple: daytime is for the kids and prime time is for the big kids, or um adults, those who like their television shaken not stirred.

And, because kids are yet to learn what an appropriate wake up time is, kids programming on 10 Shake will have kids shaking their tail feathers from 6am to 6pm daily.

Parents, are you reading this? Twelve hours of wonderful kids’ entertainment courtesy of Ryder and his team of seven crime-fighting pups.

Heck, it’ll even throw in a Spanish teacher in the form of a super cute Latina heroine and her red boot wearing monkey. De nada!

10 Shake will also boast a beloved absorbent, yellow and porous protagonist who lives in Bikini Bottom – SpongeBob SquarePants. It will also welcome a girl called Carly and her two best friends who made a web show that became an online sensation, iCarly. Plus, many more famous kid-friendly faces.

Then comes 6pm. It’s nighty night for the little ones and time for the big kids to come out and play. It’s an evening line-up nobody will be able to shake loose.

From guilty pleasures galore like Ex On The Beach and Lip Sync Battle, to a late night after party hosted by the one guy everyone would love to carpool with on The Late Late Show With James Corden, 10 Shake is set to stir up prime time.

If a party is needed, then the channel has got the one celebrity who knows how to find one in the middle of the South African jungle.

Australia couldn’t get enough of this Geordie lass on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and now Charlotte Crosby will be bringing not one but two of her shows to 10 Shake: Just Tattoo Of Us and The Charlotte Show.

And if that’s not enough, 10 Shake will be shakin’ with the latest movies including The Matrix franchises, The Hunger Games (1 and 2), The Lego Movie and Office Christmas Party.

Network 10 Head of Programming, Daniel Monaghan, said: “We are thrilled to be adding 10 Shake to our family of channels. It is a fantastic proposition for Australian viewers and includes a great array of content from ViacomCBS, a lot of which has never aired on free to air television before.

“10 Shake daytime will boast over 84 hours a week of the biggest kids’ TV shows on the planet including SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol and Henry Danger. It will provide a wonderful world of entertainment just for kids.

“10 Shake prime time will be the destination for mischievous big kids who love escapism television with plenty of bite, comedy and fun. With shows like The Charlotte Show, Catfish: The TV Show and Lip Sync Battle forming part of the schedule, it will be self-indulgent TV at its best.”

Network 10 and ViacomCBS chief sales officer Rod Prosser said: “By unlocking ViacomCBS’ huge library of iconic content and brands on 10 Shake, we are creating a fresh environment packed with familiarity.

“This is great news for brands and advertisers with endless opportunities to create something unique across this channel, and our broader playground of brands, as part of the launch.

“More than 70% of Australians* have not had access to many of these iconic shows which are firmly targeted at under 50s and we’re really pumped to be bringing them to free-to-air.”

The announcement of content on 10 Shake follows Network 10’s biggest first half commercial shares since 2011.

Rod continued: “The pendulum is certainly swinging in favour of 10 as brands and advertisers are making the switch. The addition of 10 Shake to our linear channels will only boost our share, particularly in the younger demographics, as we charge toward Q4 and 2021.”

As Chief Operating and Commercial Officer and co-lead with McGarvey, Villani will be responsible for all the combined company’s commercial activities and operations in both markets.

Most recently, Villani was Queensland’s Head of Restructuring and Brisbane’s Head of Office at advisory and investment firm KordaMentha. He brings to the role a wealth of experience specialising in organisational transformation, business stabilisation and sustainable growth.

McGarvey, who was promoted to the new role of Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President in March this year, led the integration and transformation of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand. Kyriacou commented: “Network 10 has performed very well this year. It is the only commercial network growing its audience and it has also recorded its highest commercial shares in key demographics since 2011. The integration and transformation of Network 10 and ViacomCBS under the leadership of Beverley has been successfully completed. We have launched a new channel, 10 Shake, 10 Play is experiencing its biggest ever digital audience and the MTV and Nickelodeon channels have also grown their share.

Kyriacou added: “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the KordaMentha team, led by Henriette Rothschild who has been interim Chief Transformation Officer. Henriette has been instrumental in ensuring the merged Network 10 and ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand businesses are well positioned for the future.”

McGarvey said: “I am thrilled Jarrod is joining our team and I look forward to working closely with him alongside the existing Executive Leadership Team and the international leadership team as we take ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand into 2021.

“Next year we will launch premium SVOD service Paramount + whilst growing our existing linear and subscription broadcast and digital assets. Jarrod has worked closely with the team throughout this year and on a project basis in the past and we are thrilled to have him join us on a permanent basis.”

Villani said: “I am delighted to be joining Beverley, Rod and the team at ViacomCBS and continuing the development of the business. The combination of ViacomCBS’ global content portfolio and Network 10’s broad reach and key demographic prominence provides a unique opportunity in our markets for our viewers and partners across multiple platforms.

“It’s a very exciting time for the network and the broader ViacomCBS business and I look forward to joining them in the new year.”

Villani will commence as Chief Operating and Commercial Officer, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand in early 2021.

Ten has been on a transformation path since CBS acquired the business in November 2017. Since then, it has ended a sales partnership with Foxtel Media, putting Prosser in the position to build an entirely new sales team to oversee.

It has been speculated for some time that Network 10 could launch a Nickelodeon free-to-air (FTA) multichannel as part of its channel line-up in Australia. (Nickelodeon and Network 10 are part of the ViacomCBS family). That hasn’t happened yet, but Network 10 is moving into kids programming on 10Peach and 10Play with content from the Nickelodeon vaults.

Dora, Boots and Backpack kicked off the new schedule today (Monday 6th April 2020) with Dora The Explorer followed by Blaze and The Monster Machines. Also on offer for younger viewers are PAW Patrol, followed by Aussie series Scope, Totally Wild and Crocamole.

ViacomCBS Chief Content Officer & Executive Vice President (EVP) Australia & New Zealand Beverley McGarvey told Mediaweek: “Through 10 Peach, we are unlocking ViacomCBS’ vast library of kids’ content and bringing beloved shows into our free-to-air and advertiser video on-demand environments, making it accessible to more families across the country. It’s another fantastic step as we continue to realise synergies across ViacomCBS-owned platforms in Australia.”

ViacomCBS and Network 10 chief sales officer Rod Prosser added: “The introduction of some of the world’s most popular kids titles into our ecosystem comes as we are merging the Network 10 and ViacomCBS brand sales teams, and amplifies our reach across the under 50s.
