How JoJo Siwa Went From an Influencer to a Consumer Products Powerhouse | Viacom | Nickelodeon

Via the Viacom Newsroom:

How JoJo Siwa Went From an Influencer to a Consumer Products Powerhouse

From big bows to a big business—with the help of Nickelodeon—in five years.

JoJo Siwa launched an empire with an oversized hair bow.

Since signing an exclusive licensing deal with Nickelodeon in 2016, the teen talent who rose to fame after a turn on Lifetime’s Dance Moms has sold 35 million bows worldwide. That’s two bows for each of her 16 million social media followers. Her army of Siwanators—what her fans call themselves—eagerly buy up her sequined high-top sneakers at Payless, sparkly bomber jackets at Target, and any new JoJo-branded item that hits the shelves until they’re depleted.

Her consumer products touch nearly every imaginable corner of retail. There are toys, electronics, arts and crafts, apparel, accessories, and home goods. This fall, she will expand into cosmetics (perfume) and beverages.

Yes, JoJo Siwa is an entertainer. She’s also a cottage industry.

"We figured out how to take an influencer and turn her into a brand." - Pam Kaufman, President, Viacom/Nickelodeon Global Consumer Products

“JoJo Siwa’s rise to consumer product success is remarkable, and it’s only the beginning of what we expect to see from influencers and Gen Z talent,” says Amanda Cioletti, content director for the trade magazine License Global. “It’s influencers who have the power to break through the clutter right now, and JoJo is the perfect combo of talent and influence that’s hitting at the ideal moment in time to help bridge audiences to this new way of marketing.”

Her live appearances drive sales of her branded products. Last summer, bow sales increased by 40% in Chicago after she performed at SlimeFest and 60% in the Anaheim area after VidCon.

Licensing deals with young celebrities aren’t new; Disney made an industry of Miley Cyrus and the gang of Musketeers that are among today’s (and yesterday’s) biggest pop stars. What is new is the immediacy and directness in which today’s celebrities communicate with fans. Social channels have broken the barriers between Hollywood and fans, enabling them to promote their products and publish links to purchasing sites. It’s an industry trend that’s changing the nature of celebrity. Now more than ever, celebrities are social influencers and social influencers are celebrities. And instead of using their cache to sell magazines or movies, they’re leveraging their influence to sell directly to their fans.

Last month Walmart launched a Ryan’s World toy collection, a partnership between the retailer and the seven-year-old who reviews toys on his YouTube channel. Hearts by Tiana is another influencer-started merchandise brand. Grown-up models include Reese Witherspoon’s lifestyle brand Draper James, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop and Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics

JoJo Siwa dominates the tween girls’ market.

“We figured out how to take an influencer and turn her into a brand,” says Pam Kaufman, president of Viacom/Nickelodeon global consumer products.

While YouTube enabled Siwa to build a fan base, Nickelodeon leveraged it to build a consumer products empire.

Social Stars are Retail Stars

Tweens have been exposed to social media since they were in diapers. Influencers feel more like friends than untouchable celebrities. That’s particularly true for Siwa, who eagerly shows followers her redesigned bedroom, incorporates family members into posts, and offers behind-the-scenes moments at her performances.

“It’s been a fascinating shift in dynamic from kids idolizing actors to social stars,” says Sunny Lauridsen, vice president of licensing and business development at the toy manufacturer Just Play. “For kids, they let them into their lives so they feel more authentic.”

Siwa is a convincing saleswoman, but it helps that she’s got a willing audience. More than 34 percent of kids ages six to 17 consider social media stars to be among their top role models—more so than musicians (33%), athletes (27%), and actors (22%), according to research from Mintel. Combine that with statistics from the Viacom-commissioned study, Kidfluence, that 77 percent of parents say their kids ask to buy products advertised on TV and 73 percent of parents say they have purchased the requested product, and that makes tweens a very powerful retail cohort.

“Nobody cared enough to market to previous generations of kids,” says Kit Yarrow, a consumer psychologist and author of several books including Gen BuY: How Tweens, Teens and Twenty-Somethings are Revolutionizing Retail. “There’s a shrinking hierarchical distance between parents and kids. Tweens today have more power than any other generation of tweens. What kids do and how they look reflects more powerfully on today’s parents than previous generations of parents since it’s all broadcast on social media. It’s a big shift. And marketers are recognizing that parents give their kids a lot more power.”

Nickelodeon's JoJo Siwa celebrates 14th birthday at Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas

“What kids do and how they look reflects more powerfully on today’s parents than previous generations of parents.” - Kit Yarrow, Consumer psychologist

Owning the Look

For Siwa, her authenticity and the kids’ rising purchasing power translates to sales. The JoJo action figure doll hit the number one spot in sales at Walmart for several weeks this summer, beating out Barbie and My Little Pony. At first, Lauridsen and her team were confounded by a spike in sales of the doll at Walmart since no marketing promotions were planned. After viewing Siwa’s YouTube channel they realized she mentioned the doll in a video post, causing the spike.

Payless started selling JoJo Siwa shoes in March and they’ve sold out each month since then. Once a particular shoe sells out, they are replaced with completely new merchandise. Payless decided to alert customers via social channels when a new shipment will arrive for the first time with JoJo merchandise. “We don’t do that for any other category,” says Keshia Wilson, vice president of merchandising at Payless.

Before Siwa started selling at Payless, Nickelodeon IP represented about 25 percent of their total kid’s character business in sales volume. Since adding Siwa, Nickelodeon has grown to 50 percent of the character business at Payless. Wilson attributes the strong sales to the sneakers’ appeal across ages groups.

“JoJo has an ownable look and style and girls want to replicate that,” says Lauridsen. “She’s the new aspirational icon that girls want to be just like. They want her bows, clothes, and dolls. They’re living out their fantasy of, ‘I can be like her.’”

That was evidenced at the Sugar Factory in New York recently when she announced her first multi-city, concert tour and EP release. The kids—and moms—who attended the announcement wore oversized bows, items from her Target line and side ponytails.

From Vlogger to Retail Sensation

Siwa can relate. She recalls being five years old and watching Autumn Miller, a social influencer whose social feed focuses on her life as a dancer. “I wanted nothing but to be her,” Siwa says during a phone interview. A few years later, she started posting her own videos on YouTube using her Nintendo DS. That lasted a month.

Then came her role on Dance Moms. Her big personality made her stand out among a group of big personalities. She started posting again and became more regimented about it after meeting with Colleen Ballinger, the YouTube sensation-turned-actress who starred in the Netflix series Haters Back Off. Ballinger told her that the key to success is posting frequently.

“The biggest thing with YouTube is persistence,” says Siwa, 15. “As long as you upload on a specific schedule and have consistency between channels that’s when it takes it to another level.”

"We knew there was white space in the tween market. [Siwa] had a built-in audience but we amplified it." - Pam Kaufman, President, Viacom/Nickelodeon global consumer products

Siwa, who says she’s wanted to be on TV since she was a little girl, became known for her wholesome personality, anti-bullying message, and, of course, oversized hair bows. She got a manager and together with her mom, they pitched the idea to merchandise bows to the accessories store Claire’s. “The bows had wild success,” says Siwa. “They sold out in the first day. It was crazy how fast they went.”

That’s when Nickelodeon called. “We knew there was white space in the tween market,” says Nickelodeon’s Kaufman. “She had a built-in audience but we amplified it.”

Once she signed on with Nickelodeon, she started performing at events like the Kids Choice Awards, SlimeFest and she starred in a docu-special about her life, JoJo Siwa: My World. She keeps her followers in the loop on her Nickelodeon activity by posting from the “orange carpet” (Nickelodeon’s version of the red carpet) at events [such as Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and SlimeFest].

She and her dog recently got their own show: The animated series The JoJo and BowBow Show Show started September 22 and airs on Nickelodeon’s YouTube channel on Saturdays. She released a music video for her song, “Only Getting Better,” in September and the D.R.E.A.M tour begins in Phoenix on May 17. It all culminates in her 16th birthday celebration in the spring of 2019.

“We are not letting up with JoJo,” says Kaufman. “This is the peak year. We want to make sure we’re leaving no stone unturned.”

Authenticity in Action

Through it all, Siwa says the key to keeping fans engaged is her authenticity. Last summer Target launched JoJo’s Closet, a line of clothes inspired by Siwa’s favorite performance ensembles. Target didn’t advertise the line and it wasn’t featured in their weekly circular, but it agreed to a YouTube video of her discussing the clothes from a Target in L.A. Siwa nixed the original video because it felt too produced and reshot it in her signature style.

“The fans can tell when an adult writes it or when I write it,” she says. “They can see through that. I want my fans to know about the product but I don’t want them to feel like I’m overselling.”

And for the record, the collection sold out. “A normal collection typically stays on the floor for six to eight weeks,” says Leah Kellenberger, Viacom’s vice president of retail development for Target. “Many styles sold out in the first couple weeks. It completely exceeded expectations.” The next iteration of JoJo’s Closet hits stores in January.

"I want my fans to know about the product but I don’t want them to feel like I’m overselling." - Jojo Siwa

Don’t let the Siwa’s affinity for unicorns and sparkles fool you; She’s a shrewd businesswoman. She recognizes that her instinct for knowing what kids respond to is where she has the most impact on her business. So while she approves everything that’s marketed under her name, she knows that being the face of the brand is where she’s needed.

“Creating the fanbase is my job,” she says. When Nickelodeon comes to her with new partnerships, “I ask, ‘How are we going to promote this? How are we going to get the word out?’ That’s where my creative expertise comes in.”

So where does Siwa go from here? Siwa admits that’s the question she’s asked the most. “I think there’s always somewhere to go and a future. Yea, we’ve made JoJo bedding, now let’s make a JoJo bed. Now we’ve done a collaboration with a drink lets do a collaboration with…” Here, she pauses, before continuing. “Oops, I dug myself into a hole. I can’t say the competitor.”

You get her point: This is uncharted territory, but she has a plan.

Nickelodeon's 'Pinky Malinky' To Premiere Exclusively On Netflix Later This Year [Updated]

Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, today announced that Nickelodeon's upcoming animated series Pinky Malinky will premiere later this year exclusively on the subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) service Netflix, as part of Viacom's initiate to identify intellectual property within it vaults that could be an ideal fit for a digital or linear programmer outside of Viacom!

Update (7/7): It is being reported that Netflix Brazil (Brasil) will debut Pinky Malinky on Friday 17th August 2018. It is currently unknown whether the series will also premiere on additional Netflix services, such as on Netflix USA and Netflix UK, on the same day.

Update: Under the deal with Netflix, which hasn’t previously been announced, Nickelodeon will make two seasons—59 episodes—of Pinky Malinky, a cartoon mockumentary about a positive teenage hotdog living among humans. Netflix will stream it globally, while Viacom will have the licensing rights for consumer products, such as toys and dolls. Viacom and Netflix declined to comment on financial terms or length of the deal.

Pinky Malinky is a brand-new fly-on-the-wall reality show that follows the everyday life of Pinky, an infectiously positive hot dog living in a human world. With his best friends Babs and JJ by his side, Pinky reaches for the stars in the small town of Sackenhack. Through his good spirits and sausage sensibilities, Pinky proves that a "wiener" is only one small letter away from being a "WINNER!"

Using the tropes of a mockumentary and reality show format, Pinky and his friends will talk directly to the camera and the audience to share their absurd and silly take on real life. At times, all children feel like they don't fit in and Pinky's undeniably unique point of view as a literal wiener amongst humans will allow kids to laugh at his familiar struggles and enjoy his unusual perspective on the challenges of being a school-aged kid. By always reaching for the stars, Pinky pushes himself further than anyone could imagine. Pinky and his friends' humorous experiences will also be shared across social media and Nickelodeon's digital platforms.

Co-created and co-executive produced by Chris Garbutt and Rikke Asbjoern (The Amazing World of Gumball) and executive produced by Scott Kreamer (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness), the trio are a part of the Artist Collective, an internal diverse group of experienced creators who mentor and support up-and-coming talent while also collaborating to cultivate, challenge and inspire Nickelodeon's development pipeline.

Pinky Malinky will star Lucas Grabeel (Glenn Martin DDS, I Kissed A Vampire) as Pinky Malinky, Diamond White (The Haunted Hathaways) as Babs Buttman, and Nathan Kress (iCarly) as JJ Jameson.

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif., the original animated series will join Nickelodeon's growing roster of content driven by creators discovered all over the world. A second season has been greenlit and is currently in development.

Pinky Malinky wouldn't be the first time Nickelodeon and Netflix have partnered. In 2016, Netflix partnered with Nutz Productions to produce a American remake of Nickelodeon Israel's hit drama series The Greenhouse, which debuted on the streaming platform in 2017 titled Greenhouse Academy.

Below is Viacom's original blog post announcing the news that Pinky Malinky will be debuting on Netflix, via Viacom's corporate blog:

Viacom Activates Powerful Studio Model Growth Driver As MTV, Nick Move Into Third-Party Production

Pinky Malinky is an upbeat teenager who has a lot in common with his peers: he posts rabidly on social media, he hangs out nonstop with his two best pals, and he constantly must navigate the social pressures of school and life. But there’s one very important thing that will make Pinky unique among Nickelodeon characters (besides the fact that he’s a talking hotdog): when his show debuts later this year, fans will find him exclusively on Netflix.

But Pinky won’t likely be alone for long – across Viacom’s ecosystem, brands are digging into their vaults to identify intellectual property that could be an ideal fit for a digital or linear programmer outside of Viacom. MTV, under the banner of MTV Studios, is for the first time cracking open its rich, 35-year archive to offer its iconic, youth-centric content – Real World, Daria, Aeon Flux, the Emmy Award-winning Made, just to start – in new or reimagined form on non-Viacom platforms. In addition to strategically tapping the 200 titles in its massive library, MTV Studios will churn out new ones, including, to start, The Valley (working title), about a group of friends growing up in the U.S.-Mexico border town of Nogales, and MTV’s Straight Up Ghosted, in which victims of this mobile-age abandonment will confront their disappearing former intimates.

MTV Studios Animation from Viacom on Vimeo.

Similar efforts will follow at other Viacom networks.

This studio model – under which Viacom will license and produce new episodes of fully owned content for third parties – will present an enormous growth opportunity, as the company’s brands increasingly feed the insatiable global demand for premium content.

Viacom is uniquely positioned to do this. The company’s voluminous original content libraries house an enormous number of beloved properties that speak deeply to their fans. Its archives stretch back decades – and, in the case of Paramount Pictures, more than a century. Its properties resonate deeply with high-value audiences: kids (Nickelodeon), African-Americans (BET), youth (MTV), the LGBTQ community (Logo), and more. Viacom’s global footprint means that those audiences stretch across cultures and borders. As the first port-of-call for creatives pitching shows tailor-made for these audiences, Viacom’s brands are keenly aware of what is in the market. Its production expertise is second to none.

And even as these sorts of deals multiply, Viacom will retain all consumer products rights for all properties, fueling the company’s increasingly robust consumer products operation.

The possibilities for third-party licensing and production are practically limitless. Pinky Malinky – which will feature Nick branding at the show open and embodies Nickelodeon’s patented spirit of fun and surprising stories and characters – is just the first of up to a dozen properties that the brand is positioning for reboots or co-productions this year alone.

“Proliferating distribution platforms create incremental demand for VIAB’s [Viacom’s] content because high-quality branded content is one of the most valuable forms of differentiation for competing distribution platforms,” Needham declared in a bullish March analysis of the company’s stock. “VIAB’s film and television libraries represent differentiated, globally scalable, long-lived content.”

Take, for example, Jack Ryan, the Tom Clancy action hero who fought his way through five Paramount Pictures films, starting with 1990’s The Hunt for Red October. The quintuplet of movies grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and still carries strong brand recognition and a built-in fanbase. But while there is no obvious basecamp for Ryan within Viacom’s current brand archipelago, his bulletproof vest is a perfect fit for Amazon Video, which will debut the 10-part Jack Ryan series in August.

This branching out into third-party content production has been subtly underway for some time, both in the United States and abroad. Paramount Television, the production arm of Paramount Pictures that is producing Jack Ryan, has quietly built a $400 million-per-year business from scratch by producing premium content like Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and USA Network’s Shooter.

In May, Viacom International Studios (VIS) united the extensive production capabilities of wholly Viacom-owned Argentinian broadcaster Telefe and majority-owned Brazilian comedy brand Porta dos Fundos with Viacom’s Miami-based production operations, creating a multi-lingual machine that will develop, produce and distribute original content around the world. A matrix of SVOD, pay TV and free-to-air distribution deals will place VIS-produced long-form series (Borges on Netflix in Latin America), cinematic adaptations (Telefe’s Animal on Fox Networks’ platforms in Latin America), telenovelas (Vikki RPM on Caracol Televisión in Colombia), and co-productions (Club 57 on Rainbow Group in Italy and Nickelodeon elsewhere) in diverse markets and maximize the potential of formerly regional or local properties.

These licensing deals will therefore sprinkle tastes of Nickelodeon and MTV and Telefe and other Viacom properties throughout the global content ecosystem, while segmenting the full brand experience for consumers who subscribe to a Viacom linear or digital distributor. Even so, this nascent third-party production is already acting as a powerful growth driver as Viacom diversifies outside of its core television business under President and CEO Bob Bakish.

“Building on the success of Paramount Television and Telefe’s quickly growing production business, we’re going to much more aggressively tap into the huge demand for content and unlock more of our IP and production and creative capabilities to drive incremental revenues from third-party platforms,” Bakish said on Viacom’s second-quarter 2018 earnings call in April. “This isn’t just an idea. … there is a lot of interest from SVOD partners in licensing library properties from MTV and Nickelodeon IP for brand-new interpretations. At the same time, we’re also developing new IP for the sector and have already closed deals for brand-new original Nick IP and animation with third parties and we see more in the pipeline.”

Viacom Acquires VidCon

It’s official: Viacom has announced the acquisition VidCon, host of the world’s biggest conference dedicated to YouTube and online video.

Credit: Ed Crisostomo/The Orange County Register via AP

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. It was first reported on Monday that Viacom was near a deal to acquire the confab, which began in 2010. UTA, which represents VidCon, brokered the deal with Viacom. UTA will continue to rep VidCon, overseeing sponsorship sales globally and helping to expand the conference internationally.

The move is part of Viacom’s efforts to expand beyond its TV legacy into next-generation entertainment platforms, as well as to expand the media conglomerate’s live-events business. The acquisition also raises the prospect of VidCon coverage and related programming being carried on Viacom’s cable nets, which include Nickelodeon and MTV. In recent years, Nickelodeon has had a sizeable presence sizable presence on the show floor at VidCon events.

VidCon was founded by YouTube’s popular Vlogbrothers, John and Hank Green. Each year, VidCon attracts thousands of attendees to the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California for four days of events, all aimed at creators, fans, and executives within the online video world. Eight years after it was founded by Vlogbrothers co-hosts Hank and John Green, VidCon is the preeminent event of its kind, at least within its own industry; In 2017, VidCon’s flagship event in Anaheim attracted more than 30,000 attendees, 80 sponsors, and 45 exhibitors.

“VidCon has become the foremost gathering place for the passionate online video community, and the access to talent, experts and education that VidCon provides for attendees is unparalleled,” said Jason Jordan, Viacom’s Executive Vice President (EVP) of multiplatform strategy and operations, said in announcing the pact.

The explosion of online video content internationally has prompted organizers to introduce editions in Amsterdam and Australia. VidCon Europe will take place March 22-24 in Amsterdam and VidCom Australia will take place Sept. 1-2 in Melbourne. With the acquisition, Viacom sees an opportunity to expand the conference franchise footprint to new international and domestic markets.

Under the deal, VidCon will remain a standalone subsidiary operating independently, according to Viacom. VidCon will continue to be led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jim Louderback and remain in its current offices in Montana. Co-founder Hank Green will continue be involved and work closely with the team.

“I’m so happy that we found such a strong, successful, and progressive company to give our team the stability and resources needed to make bold moves at home and grow what we’re doing internationally,” Hank Green said in a statement, adding that Viacom “has decades of expertise creating incredible live events for fans.”

Over the past year, Viacom has been ratcheting up its focus on social media and internet video — an attempt to reach Gen Z and millennial audiences, demos that have been at the core of its TV properties.

VidCon will continue to be based in Green’s home state of Montana. Jim Louderback, who ascended to the company’s CEO position last year, will retain his role after the deal is finalized. UTA, which has been helping VidCon from a strategic and sponsorship sales standpoint since 2012, will also maintain its role post the acquisition.

The financial terms of Viacom’s acquisition have not been shared publicly at this time.

Viacom's latest acquisition will allow the business to gain access to digital-native influencers and their passionate fans. The conglomerate previously expanded into online video hiring veteran exec Kelly Day - previously chief business officer for Awesomeness — to run a newly formed digital studio dedicated to short-form content. “We’re huge fans of the VidCon team, and we share the same enthusiasm for the power of connecting talented creators with their incredible fan communities,” said Day in a statement. “This team has built an unprecedented live experience that brings together the global online video community in celebration of the people and platforms shaping the future of content, and we’re excited to join forces as we look to expand our slate of original digital programming and partnerships.”

Last month Viacom acquired Whosay, an influencer marketing firm incubated by CAA that specializes in targeting young audiences online with branded content.

Viacom Acquires VidCon, Boosting Live Event and Digital Businesses

In a move that will accelerate its participation and investment in next-generation platforms and expand its focus on live events, Viacom has acquired VidCon, host of the world’s largest multi-day conference for the global online community.

VidCon – which will remain a stand-alone entity and retain its senior leadership team – will be able to considerably expand its global reach with the start-up spirit that has allowed it to flourish.

“VidCon has become the foremost gathering place for the passionate online video community, and the access to talent, experts and education that VidCon provides for attendees is unparalleled,” said Jason Jordan, Viacom executive vice president of Multiplatform Strategy and Operations. “We’re excited to partner with the team to help achieve their vision and expand VidCon’s reach around the world while maintaining the grassroots energy and authenticity that makes the experience so unique and special to so many.”

Moving Viacom to the center of the online video landscape

The announcement follows Viacom’s November launch of Viacom Digital Studios under President Kelly Day and last month’s acquisition of influence marketing firm WHOSAY, underscoring the company’s push onto the next-generation digital platforms at the center of our fans’ lives.

Even as VidCon expands the reach of its eponymous events, the company’s capabilities will both complement and bolster Viacom’s ongoing digital efforts.

“We’re huge fans of the VidCon team, and we share the same enthusiasm for the power of connecting talented creators with their incredible fan communities,” said Day. “This team has built an unprecedented live experience that brings together the global online video community in celebration of the people and platforms shaping the future of content, and we’re excited to join forces as we look to expand our slate of original digital programming and partnerships.”

Boosting Viacom’s growing live event portfolio

Last year, Viacom launched Comedy Central’s inaugural ClusterFest, which attracted 40,000 fans and rave reviews. The BET Experience brought in 165,000 fans. Paramount Network’s Bellator MMA visited New York’s Madison Square Garden for the first time.

This was all part of Viacom CEO Bob Bakish’s long-term strategy to considerably increase the number, reach and impact of live events in the company’s portfolio. VidCon fits perfectly within those plans.

With more than 30,000 attendees and 80-plus sponsors (including, for many years, Viacom), at its flagship Anaheim event, VidCon has become the largest multi-day conference of its kind and cemented itself as the premier event for the worldwide online video community. And while VidCon has already carried this momentum into events in Amsterdam and Melbourne, Viacom’s global network of platforms and properties give it the resources to supercharge that reach both internationally and within the United States.

“I couldn’t imagine a better partner to help VidCon continue its mission of democratizing the creative economy around the world,” said Jim Louderback, CEO of VidCon. “Viacom’s expansive reach across all of our key constituents will give us the opportunity to expand our global footprint more rapidly. We’re also looking forward to their expertise in pioneering and executing live fan-first events – from the Video Music Awards and BET Experience to Comedy Central’s ClusterFest – as we continue to make VidCon a life-changing experience for those that create and love online video.”

VidCon will remain a standalone subsidiary and voice for democratizing the creative economy

From its offices in Missoula, Montana, Louderback and co-founder Hank Green lead a 20-person team that has established an important meeting place, safe space, and community-driven destination for online video creators and their fans. They have long partnered closely with United Talent Agency, who has pushed global sponsorship sales to maximize the organization’s visibility and impact.

None of this will change (though Louderback will report to Viacom’s Day and Jordan) – Viacom will simply provide more resources and a bigger microphone to allow VidCon to continue nurturing the online video community and ecosystem.

“I’m so happy that we found such a strong, successful, and progressive company to give our team the stability and resources needed to make bold moves at home and grow what we’re doing internationally,” said Green. “Viacom has decades of expertise creating incredible live events for fans, and we are building something truly unique by blending that with our team’s deep care and passion for the community and culture of online video. I’m so excited to be part of this team and to continue our work connecting people, providing amazing experiences and helping creators create.”

Viacom Acquires WHOSAY, A Specialist In Social-Media Influence Marketing

Viacom has acquired Whosay, a specialist in social-media influence marketing, seeing the move as a way to expand the media company’s advertising versatility.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Viacom has worked closely with Whosay for more than two years, executing more than 50 campaigns featuring the likes of Lil Yachty, LeToya Luckett, and Kegan Allen. Sean Moran, Viacom’s head of sales, said that by buying Whosay the entertainment conglomerate can more deeply integrate its social expertise across the sales and marketing organization and augment the work of the Viacom Velocity branded-content group.

“We’re excited about a deeper integration with Whosay and the strength of our combined capabilities,” said Sean Moran, Viacom’s head of marketing and partner solutions. “This partnership will add to our linear, digital and mobile arsenal by bringing us further into the world of social media and shopper marketing. Together, we will offer brand partners unparalleled creative solutions that maximize the power of storytelling, influencer reach, omnichannel distribution and advanced advertising tools to create quality campaigns that drive results.

“From a social standpoint, while we’ve had some excellent work there, it’s really been focused around our tentpoles like the MTV VMAs,” added Moran. “One of the reasons we’re so excited about Whosay is, this instantly puts us into a 52-week capability to deliver social solutions [to advertising clients] with curated scale.”

Using its proprietary Match platform, Whosay pairs brands and influencers, then creates a campaign and spreads it to a targeted audience across social, digital, mobile, linear, out of home and other channels. “Experience” marketing is another arena of interest, as Viacom continues to invest in live events such as the BET Soul Train Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards.

Viacom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Bakish has estimated revenue from non-traditional sources — a bucket that includes everything from advanced advertising to virtual MVPD bundles — at $350 million in 2017 and predicts it could reach $1B by 2020.

Whosay was founded in 2010 by CEO Steve Ellis and CAA, originally as a media company based on an invitation-only social network for celebrities. Today, New York-based Whosay functions as a creative-marketing agency that develops and produces branded content with talent ranging from “micro-influencers” to big-name celebs.

Whosay had raised about $30 million in funding from investors including Comcast Ventures, CAA, Greylock Partners, Amazon.com, High Peaks Ventures, and China’s Tencent. Its range of services include campaign strategy, influencer talent vetting and casting, content production, distribution and performance guarantees. The company also offers in-store and point-of-sale activations for clients.

All told, Whosay has run more than 400 campaigns that have generated over 5 billion impressions and 900 million-plus user engagements, according to the company. It distributes content across multiple platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter.

Recent Whosay campaigns have featured Vanessa Williams for Aveeno; Darren Criss for AT&T; Tia Mowry (Sister, Sister, Instant Mom) for Oreo; Alec Baldwin for Chevrolet; Brynn Rumfallo (“Dance Moms”) for Pantene; Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) for Hellmann’s; Christian Navarro (13 Reasons Why) for McDonald’s; and former NFL players DeMarcus Ware and Emmitt Mmith for Dr Pepper and Kingsford.

Whosay’s Ellis said his company doesn’t operate a “network” of influencers. Instead, it creates custom content from scratch — from concept through to enlisting talent and distributing the finished product. “Our mission has been trying to improve the marketing experience on a mobile phone,” he said.

With Whosay, Viacom will be able to create campaigns built around Viacom intellectual property, Moran said, including show talent as well as characters like SpongeBob SquarePants. Whosay will also complement Viacom’s existing advertising assets, including Velocity, an integrated marketing and creative unit, and help Viacom’s new digital studios unit under president Kelly Day — who came on board last fall from AwesomenessTV — in monetizing short-form content, he said.

As part of Viacom, Whosay will remain in its current offices in New York and L.A. operating as an independent organization collaborating with Viacom’s Marketing & Partner Solutions group. Whosay has 72 employees, who will remain with the company under Viacom’s ownership.

Ellis, before starting Whosay, was founder and CEO of Pump Audio, a digital music-rights company acquired in 2007 by Getty Images.

WIN A Trip To Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana With Toys"R"Us New "Play Chaser" AR App

Toys“R”Us are clearly all about bringing their stores to life and making them a place for kids to play. In fact, it’s in their DNA and new mission to set play free…aka making sure kids (and adults) make time for unstructured play. Toys“R”Us also know their customers want more than just a place to shop. They want something different, like experiences and toys out of the box.

One cool, techy way the toy retailer is making it happen now is…AR! That’s augmented reality for those not in the know. Specifically, Play Chaser, Toys“R”Us's new, FREE-to-PLAY AR app for smartphones and tablets that virtually brings Toys“R”Us stores to life!

How does it work? Developed in partnership with PlayFusion, Play Chaser uses PlayFusion’s proprietary computer vision technology to activate different AR games and play experiences on your smart device. To unlock the experiences, simply download the app (in the Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon Appstore) and scan the many different Play Chaser signs featured on Toys“R”Us shelves.

The play experiences are fun and interactive – from a virtual basketball hoop that kids can shoot at solo or alongside friends in-store, to a baby nursery where they can select a unique, digital You & Me doll, take it home and care for it (think: changing diapers, feeding and bath time!). There’s even a virtual Geoffrey the Giraffe to welcome customers to the store, explain the app and send kids on their quest for in-store play. Another cool feature? Some games have leaderboards that show where players rank amongst each other in their local store and nationally.

Check out the video below to see the app in action before playing in-store! To download the video, Play Chaser logo and screenshots, click here.

Happy parent alert! The app is completely FREE! Not only to download, but little ones won’t be able to make “accidental” in-app purchases and won’t be subject to pesky advertisements. The in-app currency is stars (like those on Geoffrey) and kids can earn and spend them by completing different quests or games – all without using your hard-earned dollars.

When is this live, you ask? Starting today, Toys“R”Us are testing Play Chaser in 23 stores in the U.S. (keep scrolling for the list)! Don’t worry, it’s rolling out to all Toys“R”Us stores nationwide on Saturday, October 21, including Toys“R”Us' Times Square holiday shop.*

Play Chaser is available to download now, but to celebrate the apps' nationwide launch, customers who download the app between Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 28 will eligible to enter Toys“R”Us's official Play Chaser Sweepstakes. No this isn’t just for a few winners – 2,000 entrants will receive a $25 Toys“R”Us gift card, with one winning a grand prize trip for four to the Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana! #forrealwinning

You can check out the stores Toys“R”Us are testing Play Chaser in now (list below), but don’t forget to start playing at all stores nationwide starting Saturday, October 21!

*Excludes TRU Express & Outlet locations

While the AR experience was being developed months before the company filed for Chapter 11 protection to deal with $5 billion in long-term debt, efforts to make the retailer's roughly 1,600 stores more interactive will be key to the company's turnaround, Toys“R”Us CEO Dave Brandon told USA Today, adding "It's going to transform the experience of coming into a Toys R Us bricks and mortar store and turn it into something that’s quite different and a lot more fun. [...] We believe that’s going to drive a lot more traffic into our stores which will ultimately put us in a position where we can be more successful at growing our sales and our company."

Next Up? Playrooms

In addition to their brand-new AR app, Toys R Us plans to open playrooms at 42 stores where children can try out games and gadgets, and toy demonstrators will be on standby.

Brandon says that he doesn't believe that “any one of these programs that we're both testing and rolling out is a silver bullet . . . that’s going to dramatically change trends."

But he added, "bringing our stores to life and creating engaging experiences for our customers is a business strategy . . . That strategy was in place before we filed to restructure the company, and it will be one that will continue with increasing amounts of investment as we move forward."
